Why the decision to transfer?
"I had dreams and aspirations of one day playing in the NFL. It's just a numbers game. There's nothing wrong with UCLA, I don't have any beef with the program. It's not like I'm mad at anyone. It's a business decision, man. Some of my family isn't happy with it. Some of them don't want me to leave, but right now I have to do what's best for me."

Do you feel you got a fair shot at UCLA?
"Some people I didn't get a fair shot, some people say I did. I can't really sit here up and say that I didn't get a fair shot. Things didn't work out the way I wanted them to. It's nothing against the coaches. Right now, they have to go where it feels right. Unfortunately, I got the short end of the stick."

Bruins Nation Kevin Love: "Such a nice guy"

Finals week means procrastination week for me, so I've decided to share with you all a picture I made sometime last  year. I suppose the timeliness of the picture may have lapsed. Oh well.

I made this picture for a friend (a Tennessee fan) who was bitterly complaining about the announcers fawning over Kevin Love during every UCLA game we watched. She ranted on and on about how sick she was of hearing about "what a nice guy Kevin love is" and how he was a "real classy guy."

Well, here is Kevin Love rescuing a rather large kitten from a burning building. How can you deny it? What a nice guy:

This is a great article that Dohn posted on his blog discussing CRN's empathy and compassion.

Bruins Nation Meeting Ed O'Bannon in LV

This past weekend I had a rather interesting experience meeting Ed O'Bannon, small forward of the 1995 UCLA basketball championship team.

I was with some other Bruins in Las Vegas this past weekend. We were volunteering for the Obama campaign and helping register new voters throughout Las Vegas. Our morning consisted of haranguing people outside of grocery stores, attempting to register new voters. The whole affair was okay, but it was way too hot to be in the sun for so long. The evening voter registration activity was a bit more fun.

In the evening, we were sent by the campaign to register new voters at the UNLV/UNR rivalry football game. It was a pretty positive experience mingling with the tailgating crowds, most people were really friendly and receptive.

But that all is besides the point. As I was walking around the UNLV stadium, a man with a bright red UNLV shirt noticed my UCLA hat and asked if my friends and I were bruins. He shook our hands and introduced himself as Ed O'Bannon.

I immediately geeked out over it--the two ladies I was with had no idea who he was. We, of course, asked him if he was registered to vote and he said he wasn't. He agreed to register, and I had the honor of helping him fill the form out.

We chatted for a little bit, got pictures, and took his voter registration form. I was so excited about the whole affair that I kept bragging to everyone who would listen for the rest of the weekend. It's not often I get to register Bruin legends to vote, but I wouldn't mind making it a habit.

And that is my Ed O'Bannon story.

Renardo Sidney...

Although his team (LA Dream) lost both of its pool play games, Sidney was by far the most physically dominating prospect this weekend. His frame is that of an NBA power forward -- with broad shoulders and long arms -- but he doesn't take advantage of it nearly enough. He can handle and pass the ball with equal aplomb, especially in transition. In addition, he has a solid stroke out to 22 feet. However, he settles for jump shots far too often and doesn't dominate the interior -- at either end -- as much as he should. Although he may envision himself as an NBA wing-type, he is simply becoming too big for that to happen. Sidney needs to continue to work on his face-up, 4-man skills and develop more skill and savvy in the post to reach his potential. At this level, he can get away with trying to be LeBron James, but at the next level and beyond he'll have to adjust to become more like Chris Webber.
