Hi, my name is Brian. I’m 31, and a 3rd generation Giants fan who was raised in central NJ. Before moving back to the area in the fall of 2006, I spent the previous 7 years living in Texas and Oklahoma while in the Army. I started reading your blog that fall, and have been checking every day since. Living in the Midwest kept me from watching the Giants more than a handful of times each year, but allowed me to see a lot of other teams. I would get 5 games on Sunday afternoons – 3 early games and 2 late games. Add in Sunday and Monday nights, and I was watching 14 teams play every week. That’s a lot of football, and it gave me a slightly different perspective than many folks in Giants country who are limited to 2 Sunday games.

Right now, I'm in Iraq with the NJ National Guard. Luckily for me, I've been able to watch 9 of their 11 games on the Armed Forces Network. Unfortunately, there's an 8 hour time difference between the east coast and Baghdad, so the 1pm games come on at 9pm, the 4pm games at midnight, and Sunday / Monday night games are really Monday / Tuesday morning games at 430am. Needless to say, Mondays have been a bit of a drag. However, its well worth it when they win.

Big Blue View QBs Turning Corners

in my quest to get over the giants loss to the eagles, i've been pouring over the giants stats season-by-season since i started following them in '84.  i was looking at phil simms' career numbers (my first football hero), and noticed that he seemed to have turned a corner during the super bowl win over denver, much like eli seemed to have suddenly turned a corner during the season-ending loss to the pats last year.  because i didn't think anybody else would care, i decided to share with you guys.  here, i'll show the business portion of a spreadsheet:

Player Ages Years G Comp Att Comp% Yds YPA YPC TD TD% INT INT% Rating
Simms  30-32 84-86 48 820 1496 54.8% 11360 7.6 13.9 65 4.3% 60 4.0% 77.2
Simms  33-39 87-93 79 1250 2155 58.0% 15877 7.4 12.7 95 4.4% 54 2.5% 85.4
Manning 24-26 05-07 48 892 1608 55.5% 10342 6.4 11.6 71 4.4% 55 3.4% 75.6
Manning 27 08 21 383 630 60.8% 4346 6.9 11.3 31 4.9% 11 1.7% 90.6

specifically, look at the comp%, int%, and qb rating.  while i know about small sample sizes, and its only one year for eli, i still think it was pretty significant improvement in both cases.  i was only just starting to read the sports section of the ledger when simms made his improvements, so here's my question:  does anyone remember simms gettting credit / press for improving?
