I was just watching the press conference and I heard Josh McDaniels open up by saying, " First I want to give credit to the Chargers, coach Zorn". I don't really think this means that the Broncos were overlooking Washington, I mean the offense was running great until the Orton injury. I hope this only means one thing: McDaniels already has his mind on how to just totally destroy the Chargers. I hope Orton plays next week. The guy is a warrior and I really believe he will play. Gotta believe McD will have something special for the Chargers. We NEED this win. Let's destroy the Chargers!

Hey Broncos fans! Haven’t had a post in a long time but, I was bored and I really want to start posting again, so here are just a few things I’d like to say about the first half of the season.

Things that have really impressed me....

The play of Kyle Orton: Living in Chicago, I knew Orton was a good QB when he came to Denver in the trade during the offseason. I had a feeling Orton would be a decent QB in this system, but I had no idea he would be playing this well over the 1st half of the year. Gotta love the leadership he brings: WINNER. Sure he has had some struggles, but at least he won’t turn that ball over(forget PIT!)
Speaking of leadership, let’s talk about that right now. It seems the Broncos in years past have had a hard time finding a leader since Al Wilson went off on the strecher. Now the Broncos are filled with guys like Dawkins, Davis, Woodyard, Haggan, Royal, Graham. This has to be one of the biggest reason the Broncos are winning the West right now.
The Defense: Well, DUH, that’s a given! Overall, the defense is doing a great job on their end of the bargin. Switching to a new scheme in one year and play lights out like this? That has to give you confiedence for what the future brings. Especially when the Broncos improve the front 3.

But there are some things I am concerned with, and that is what this is mainly about...

Punting: Oh my gosh it seems like I will never be happy with the punting on this team. I am not a "Kern-backer" just a guy who wants a decent punter for once! Sure Kern out kicked the coverage a few times, and had some issues when kicking it inside the 20. But I don’t think Kern was worth dropping for a guy that will kick it 35 yards. Yes, Berger has done a decent job at kicking inside the 20, but when the Broncos were having problems moving the ball, a 35 yard punt ending up at midfield was not helping our case. PLEASE FIND A NEW PUNTER!
4-Man rushes: Over the past few games, its seems like the Broncos are only getting pressure when they blitz. Sure the got to Big Ben a few times, but other than that it seemed the Broncos struggled when only bringing 4. Hopefully that will change this week.
Punt/Kickoff Returns: Not gonna lie, but our return game is awful. Forget about San Diego everyone. The blocking isn’t where it needs to be. I see a new coach coming in next season if these struggles continue.
Interior line: For this whole season it seems that Ben Hamilton has been taken advantage of. He was a liabilty on the line, as much as I hate to say it. Hopefully with Hochstien coming in at LG, the line will be able to run and pass block better.
Running game: This is probably an issue with the offensive line, as I stated before, but it is a cause for concern. Buckhalter doesn’t seem the same since that ankle injury, and moreno looks like he is dancing too much in the backfield. I look for the run game to improve this week however .
Playcalling: This probably one of the biggest problems that has bothered me. I know the line hasn’t been blocking too well, but that doesn’t mean the offense should be so constricted. Orton has shown he can throw it downfield(NE comes to mind). I don’t see why the Broncos won’t stretch the field more. The offense is becoming a little predictable. Hope it changes this week.

Eventhough I have concerns, I am NOT giving up on this team. McDaniels is a great coach, and there is too much talent and desire on this team to let 2008 happen all over again. The Steelers and the Ravens were very tough opponents, but now it is time for us to rebound. A game with the Skins and a game with the Chargers. These 2 games will be big. And I couldn’t be more confident picking the Broncos! My prrdiction going into the year was 11-5. And now it looks like the Broncos will be right around that mark. the Broncos are on pace to win the West, and that's all i could ask for. So to everyone who is jumping ship: GO AHEAD! I'll stick with the team I love! That’s about all I got everyone. Have yourself a Fantastic Friday!

The Bears had really no intentions of negotiating an extension for Cutler during the season, but Jay's agent presented the right offer, and the Bears locked him up through 2013, and make him about $30 million richer.

NFL Re-Cutter

Hey Broncos fans,

I was laying around the house today, and an idea popped into my head. I should make a highlight reel of the game against the Bengals from Sunday. So I had heard about this thing NFL.com has called the NFL Re-Cutter. Now if any of yall aren't familiar with it, NFL Re-Cutter basically provides you with footage and helps you create your own personal highlight reel. So anyway, I go onto NFL.com, and click on re-cutter. But when I try to look for footage from this season, there isn't any. Not even the preseason. Is NFL.com done with this thing? I thought it was a pretty cool idea. Anyway, if anyone can tell me what is up with re-cutter, or has another site that is similar(because I'm not so good at video editing) that would be great. Thanks!

Thoughts on the 1st Team(Two Games in)

Some might say the Broncos season is going to be the worst one in history, but me, I have been quite pleased by what I have seen out of the first team on both offense and defense. Lets get right into it!

The Offense: The offense has been pretty muchh what I expected heading into the preseason. Tonight, Kyle moved the ball with solid efficiency and great pace. He put great zip on the ball, and was extremely accurate with almost all of his throws. He had a great check at the line on the touchdown pass to Stokely, and threw the screen pass very effectively. Look for Orton to take Denver on drives the consist of many runs, screen passes, and quick throws. Time of possession is what is going to win the Broncos a lot games this year. That way, the defense can stay fresh. That fact alone will improve the defense

The runningbacks have also impressed me with their play in these first two games. Buckhalter seems to be a great guy to split carries with. Moreno had a few good runs before he got hurt. Can't wait to see what he does this season. Peyton Hillis is true Bronco! What doesn't this guy do?!?!

The widereceivers are going to cause defenses a lot of problems this year. Royal is showing he is in for a BIG year. Gaffney seems like he is going to be targeted a lot as well. He has done better than I had expected of him. McKinely seems to have developed a great chemistry with Simms. I see him being a great slot guy in a couple years.

Now lets take a look at the Defense!

The Defense: The defensive line has been the biggest surprise to me so far! That was the biggest question mard coming into the season, in my opinion. I don't remember how many sacks they have gotten in these first two games, but the d-line seems to have gotten a good amount of pressure. Chris Baker has potential to become a great NT. Kenny Peterson also seems like he can become a decent player in this system.

The linebackers are going to be the strong point of the defense. DJ and Andra are solid inside, and Doom has shown he is going to be a great rush LB. Andre Goodman had some poor technique tonight, and was out of positoin on both of the touchdown passes. Good thing this is preseason :)

Now for the most important topic I wanted to address.....

Coaching: I have been so impressed with Josh McDaniels and the rest of the Broncos staff. The thing the I love about what McD has been doing is evaluating, not winning . Now some of you might say, Well this, Josh McDaniels clearly does not know football! He is not even trying to show his players how to win! Well you, my friend, have no clue what preseason is all about. Preseason is a time to put certain players in certain situations and evaluate them. Who cares about the score, as long as you can get a better feel for what your team can and can't do. Take that interception by Orton tonight for instance. It was 4th and goal on the two, i believe. McD could have easily just had a running play, but he decided to experiment and put Orton in a unique situation. Instead, Orton was put in a shotgun set, and had to throw the ball. No one was really open on the play, so he tried to make a play. I wouldn't have chosen to throw it with my left hand, but at least he was trying to make something out of nothing. Why not? It's preseason! Now of course in the regular season, Hillis would have ran the in for a TD(IF they went for it), but McD is figuring out the limits of his team. How can you disagree with that?

Also, Mike Nolan has been doing great with the defense, IMO. He actually has a scheme and a system. Something Slowik lacked as a d-coordinator. Now that the Broncos have a WORTHY defensive coordinator, the Broncos defense will surprise a lot of teams this year.

Bottom line, it does not matter what the score is. Preseason is a time to see who can and can't do certain things. Winning does not matter, as funny as that might sound. If the offense can continue to move the ball down the field, and be in the top 10 in points, which is very possible, and the Broncos can be in the middle of the road in defense, look for the Broncos to make a nice playoff run. Probably resulting as AFC West champs baby. GO BRONCOS!!!!

4th and Long

Hey everyone, this fanpost isn't really related to the Denver Broncos, but it sure is related to football. I just finished up watching the season finale of 4th and Long on Spike TV, and it was great. I think it is a pretty cool idea having guys competing for a spot to go to training camp with the Dallas Cowboys, but it would be even cooler if it was for the Broncos. Now if you haven't seen the finale, stop reading right now because I don't want to spoil it for you. But here is my question to you guys if you watched: Was Jesse Holley the right choice? Personally, I was a big fan of Andrew Hawkins. He kind of reminds me a bit of Eddie Royal. Great character guy, who is small for his position, but just dominates anyone who steps in his path. He is also a great return man and and excellent gunner. It will be interesting to see where he goes, because this guy can play in the NFL. Another question I have is: If you were Brian Xanders, would you invite this guy to go to camp at Dove Valley? I would in a heart beat! He could battle with Lloyd, Jackson, and McKinely for a spot on the team. So yeah, that's my thoughts on 4th and Long. I can't wait for next season. It was a pretty entertaining show. Tell me what you think. Did the Cowboys make the right call?

Draft Day(s) Analysis

Here is my analysis of the Broncos draft. Enjoy!

Knowshon Moreno-RB: At first I was hoping we would take Brian Orakpo, but then I started to warm up to the pick. This fills a HUGE need at runningback. None of the guys McDaniels signed in the offseason are true starting runningbacks. Now we have the position stabilized for many years to come. This will take the pressure off the passing game, and also open up the passing game. Defenses will now have to respect the run, so Kyle Orton will not have to worry about the defense always thinking pass, like Cutler. Sometimes the best defense is a running game. If the Broncos were able to run the ball effectively the Broncos would have been in the playoffs. This will also improve the red-zone offense now that we have a guy that can pound through the defense. Oh, and I forgot to mention, he is a good reciever as well.

Grade: A+

Robert Ayers-DE: I like this pick a lot. Ayers is very athletic and has the ability to play DE, OLB, and maybe even some DT in 4-3 sets. He is probably the most veristile defensive lineman in the draft and I think that is why the Broncos chose him. They are running a 3-4/4-3 hybrid this year, so they are going to need plenty of versitility.

Grade: A

Alphonso Smith-CB: The pick fills a future need, and that is ok with me. The Broncos secondary is aging and they will soon need a replacement for Champ Bailey. The guy is a ballhawk and gets plenty of interceptions. He can also returns kicks and punts which is also a plus. This guy would be a first-rounder if he was just a little bit taller. I don't care about his height. He can play! Probably will be the Broncos' nickel guy this season. But, there was still Ron Brace available who was my top NT on my board.

Grade:B+

Darcel McBath-S: Just like the last pick, this pick fills a future need. Brian Dawkins is getting up there in age. This guy is the perfect player to learn from Brian Dawkins. He is a vocal leader who makes plays, just like Smith. I think he could develop into a great safety a few years down the road. I see him as the center field type safety. It was a little bit of a reach, but the Broncos were very high on him, so I am going to trust their decision.

Grade: B

Richard Quinn-TE: This is a great blocking tight-end with good hands. UNC did not use the tight-end in the passing game, so he did not have many catches at all. He showed he can catch at the combine, though. This pick will definitely help improve our awful red-zone offense from last year. Another big, strong, receiver and another strong blocker. This player will give us even more support on the offensive line, and another threat inside the 20. Love the pick, but it seems to be a a little too high.

Grade: B

David Bruton-S: Another safety added to the roster. This guy is kind of a project, but this guy has the potential to turn into a very good football player. Another ballhawk, just like Smith and McBath, and can also play the center field type role. McDaniels also mentioned he really liked Bruton because can can come in right away a be on all 4 special teams units as a gunner. Has good speed, but needs to improve in man coverage. He is also a team leader! Learning under Brian Dawkins should help this kid out a lot!

Grade:B+

Seth Olsen-OL: This pick is very interesting. He is a very versitile lineman. McDaniels stated in his press conference that he can, and will play gaurd, tackel, and center. We already have K-Lich, who plays G/C, but ther more versitility the better, in my opinion. Maybe this guy will be the future replacement for Hamilton.

Grade: A-

Kenny McKinley-WR: I see McKinley as a slot-type of player. His playing style kind of reminds me of Eddie Royal. He ran a 4.37 at the combine, so maybe he can develop into that deep threat the Broncos need. I wanted Johnny Knox, but the Bears picked him the pick before us. I'm sure the Broncos had Knox high on their board, and they thought McKinley would be the next best reciever for their system.

Grade: B

Tom Brandstater-QB: I love the pick! He is 6 feet and 5 inches, has a good arm, and seems to be pretty mobile. McDaniels also focused on that he thinks Brandstater is a very smart and bright player. He is accurate in the short to medium passes, but losses so accuracy on the deep ball. Kyle Orton had problems with that too his rookie year, but he seems to have improved it. This is the perfect guy for McDaniels to develop.

Grade: A+

Blake Schlueter-OL: I like this pick also. More versitility on the offensive line. Schlueter can play all three offensive line positions, and plays with a lot of passion. Good pick.

Grade: A-

Overall, I give the Broncos a grade of A- (well at least until we actually see them play). They didn't adress the front 7 very well, but McDaniels highly stressed that everything is running according to their master plan. Some of the picks might not be able to come in right away and make an impact, but I can see all of these players starting in the future. He is drafting players that make plays and I love that. I also like the fact that McDaniels is drafting players that just want to win and have great character. If McDaniels and company can make this defense decent this year, then I believe the Broncos will have a very successful season.
