A debate about debating here at MHR

For all of its promise and power, the internet can be an ugly place. One of the lowest levels of content is often found in a site’s comment section. On many sites, this unregulated free-flow of ideas becomes a fight to the lowest common degenerative insult faster than you can say “your mom is a troll and you’re gay” (that’s high art insult on a site like Yahoo).

This site, which I’ve been a fan of and contributor to since the Shanahan years (lost my original handle due to a misunderstanding of SB policies), has constantly fared better than just about any other site I’ve been to. Even during the most contentious McDaniels or Tebow fights, I could usually find common ground with posters whom I disagreed with -- namely that we all love the Broncos and we don't have to agree on how we do that in order to enjoy this site together.

When it comes to debate, I'm a fan of thinking out of the box and those who think that way. I see tremendous value in looking at, listening to and sometimes changing my opinion to the other side of where I am at a given moment. One of the great constants in life is change; if I'm exactly who I was five years ago, in my mind, I've got a problem (or ten).

In my work (as a filmmaker) I often employ those who think differently in order to poke holes in our production plans. Whether or not I ultimately agree with them, I would rather face challenges in preproduction than during a shoot.

I find the following habits destructive in trying to further meaningful and thought-provoking debate:

A) Insisting one's way is absolutely correct (negating other opinions unilaterally and therefore negating the possibility to learn as opposed to simply dictate).

B) Refusing to take responsibility for one's side of a disagreement and the possibility that the other side may have a point, too -- that in fact both sides, particularly in a discussion that is subjective or speculative (which I would estimate at least 90 percent are here at MHR), may be "right' in their own way and that maybe, just maybe, by holding more than one opinion as absolute in a non-absolute situation one might garner greater understanding.

C) Defaulting to insults and snark in the midst of an otherwise reasonable debate.

One other note: I am a teacher and an academic. I completed my Masters Degree less than a year ago and have been teaching media and film for the last four years. I mention this as it affects my writing -- some see it as stuffy and elitist. I do not write with that intention. I write based on who and where I am at this stage in my life and in a manner I hope conveys the clearest meaning so discussion can continue forward and new insights can be gained. I am far from perfect. I make a great number of grammar, spelling and punctuation mistakes both here and in my professional writing, despite my best efforts. I try to discern meaning over style when reading others posts -- in other words, I'm not the grammar police. And I look forward to your thoughts on debating at MHR.

I’m angry. I’m disappointed. I’m heart-broken. And, at the same time, I’m completely grateful for the amazing season that this year’s Broncos gave us. Thank you, John Elway. Thank you, Pat Bowlen. Thank you, Peyton Manning. I know the jury is going to be out on PFM for a while in some fans eyes – I’ve heard the familiar calls already -- but not this one’s; I am totally enamored with you still. I don’t buy the post-season choke thing for a second. This was a team-loss riddled with plenty of blame for all. The coaching, the refs, the execution by individual players at crushing individual moments. It’s all there and you can parse it all you want. I don’t care. Call me totally blind. I don’t care. I’m a Broncos fan, through the thick and thin.

The depth and length of my fan-ship helps me believe that this is a movie I’ve seen before – and it turns out with back-to-back Superbowls totally redeeming the heartache. 1996 all over again, anyone? I’m on board. The hard part’s past. That chip on Peyton’s shoulder just got a little bigger. Think for one second he’s not going to come back better next year? Think anyone on this team is not going fire harder, stronger and better this off-season knowing what they missed out on by the slimmest of margins? Not that any of that anger, disappointment, time in the gym etc. guarantees a damned thing. They could all come back, do everything right and have the whole damned thing blow up on them next year. Could happen. But I don’t think so. I smell Lombardi Trophy in 2014 and 2015 for our beloved Broncos.

Again, feel free to call me whatever you want: ridiculous, stupid, naïve, ignorant, etc.. But make sure to add Denver Bronco fan to the end of that insult – because I have been for over 35 years now and I plan to be for the rest of my life. Yes, this moment sucks, but the overall ride has been fantastic and I am completely on board for more next fall.

Too Out Of the Box?

Maybe taking a cue from the much-hated (for many reasons) Patriots is not a bad one here: What about Julius Thomas or Virgil Green in the backfield as a temporary spot-player at running back? They've both been lauded for their athleticism. I realize this is a shift for both of them, but it seems with a guy who is as intelligent and loves creating mismatches as much as Peyton does, this would be a nice fit.

I'm guessing everyone here remembers all too well the way Aaron Hernandez torched the Broncos out of the backfield last year in the playoffs. Hernandez has been clocked at just slightly faster in the 40 than Green or Thomas and they are about the same body-wise (Thomas has a few inches of height on him).

The idea is along the lines of a hybrid "best athlete available" meets "next man up". It's not likely one that's suited for longterm use, but situationally, could prove very powerful. Additionally, since the Broncos are playing a team that struggles to score offensively (not saying the Chiefs = an easy win -- division foes are tough for everyone) -- but there may be a little more wiggle room here for creativity.

How quickly some forget. Things that are unacceptable and individual plays that make somehow add up to formerly acceptable to outstanding individuals players then becoming unworthy (despite a body of work and work that, within the framework of the whole, dictates something otherwise) are flying fast and furious this morning in Bronco country.

It's funny, to me, how quickly (over say...15 months) this fan base (by and some) have gone from we're the worst, to we're a team of destiny, to we've messed with destiny and will now suffer the consequences, to we're Super Bowl Champs, to if we don't watch it we're going to be one and done in the playoffs. [Insert infamous Jim Mora croak]

I tend to be a bit of a centrist -- which I know isn't everyone's cup of tea. I know a lot of people like to come here to (over) react, claiming that's what sports and being a fan are about. I disagree with that sentiment. Sports, like life, to me are about the long view. It's a whole season, not a single game. Just like team's a whole collection, not any single or sets of individuals.

What this team accomplished in sweeping the Chargers is fantastic. It is the first time they've done it in seven years -- it signifies a true changing of the guard. The immediate stated goal of this Broncos team is to win the AFC West. That happens one division rival game at a time. Despite the opportunities to make it easier to accomplish that yesterday, it didn't happen. What did happen was the Broncos did enough to put themselves in the driver's seat of a car that the Chargers are left hitch hiking to even get in (with the Raiders and Chiefs serving as proverbial road kill). Look around the league at other division rival games and see how often they are so much closer than you might expect, even with power houses like New England (last week against Buffalo -- so close to no-no), Baltimore (squeaking past the Ben-less Steelers?) and Houston (OT vs. the Jags?).

I'm not above criticizing the team -- there's plenty there to hit on and I have faith in the coaches and players to take accountability for those things and adjust for next week. That's the great thing about this team, perhaps more than any other since Elway was back behind Nalen: they get it. There are enough wizened vets and spring-footed youths, balanced with enough coaching intelligence and front-office brass to get the whole of what's going on here. This is special. Does that mean they still won't suffer an utter collapse over the next six weeks? Or flame out in a first round embarrassment? No. Those are possibilities, to be sure. However, in the long view, taking the whole sum of what this team has to offer, I like their odds.

Greetings fellow A's fans! In honor of hope, springing and all that is eternal, I'm going to dedicate my radio show, Nobody Knows Hollywood, tomorrow (Tuesday, April 3rd) to the best (and worst) baseball movies.

Greetings fellow A's fans! In honor of hope, springing and all that is eternal, I'm going to dedicate my radio show, Nobody Knows Hollywood, tomorrow (Tuesday, April 3rd) to the best (and worst) baseball movies.

The show is focused on all things Hollywood, often with a Las Vegas angle (as I live in Sin City these days). As I'm a Bay Area native, though (and always looking for a way to get back), I love to keep my finger on the pulse of my fellow die-hards from the biggedy.

I'd love to hear from you. We're live from 4-5 pm on KUNV HD2 (webstreaming out of UNLV - If you're using iTunes, use this link. (written out here, just in case: http://streaming.kunv.org:8007) and the call-in number is 702-895-3915.

I know the Green and Gold have already earned their first split a week ahead of everyone else, but it's still fun to think: play ball is going to be shouted state-side very soon!!! Let's go Oak-land (the A's still play there, right?).

*EDIT:

As is written below, in response to a few who have questioned my reason for posting this or my being an A's fan, I've been here with Athletics Nation since 2005 (though there has been a handle change from the original, "Princemilo" - hence the sig). I've been an A's fan since 1980. Defending my fandom any further (at all, really) seems rather pointless. I responded quickly below because it angers me to be accused of spamming or not being a legitimate fan or member of this community. I don't often post here, but I regularly lurk, recommend and occasionally comment. Being a full-time teacher, G.A., Grad Student and father of two kids under the age of three has a way of taking up time and allowing for little space to "prove" one's fandom by posting -- if that, indeed, is the measure.

I posted this here because, as I wrote above, I genuinely thought it would be fun to talk with fellow A's fans about their favorite baseball movies. There is an assumption on my part, perhaps not entirely fair, that one's favorite doesn't have to do with the fact that you were in the film or not (in whatever capacity). I am a filmmaker, so perhaps this is my conceit. I also believe in the length of time being valuable to the evaluation of a works greatness. In baseball, perhaps more than any other sport, time is an X-factor. The game has no clock. The historical roots of the game are deep. This often shows up in the way movies that portray the sport -- there are longer, wider shots with more negative space and loneliness portrayed as individual battles take place within team struggles throughout.

Moneyball, as I've said many times on my show, did this brilliantly with the portrayal of Billy Beane. I dedicated an entire show to the film during the Oscar run-up. I don't feel it was best film last year ("Hugo" got that honor). And I feel it was a very weak crop of films, overall, for Best Picture. I left Moneyball off the original list because of the time factor - in other words, it being too new to consider against films that have stood the test of time. New films -- new anything -- have that feeling of excitement around them simply because they are new. If in ten years Moneyball is still in people's favorites, then it will have achieved that status. As it is, to me in my manner of thinking, it's a relatively new film that was very well done and one that I am proud to own.

This would be funny, but what about Drew Stanton as the backup for Manning? He wants out -- I don't know if the Jets will let him out or not. But if he does, does he fit here? Here's a scouting report on him out of Michigan State.

We all know the feeling of the shiny new thing: excitement, anticipation, hope. The old thing? Well, if it’s in good condition, it has a proven track record, it is reliable and it certainly gets the job done.

From purely a manager’s perspective, I absolutely understand and agree with EFX’s decision to go with what’s new over what’s old.

From purely a fan’s perspective who always likes cheering for the underdog, I have a bit of a hangover this morning.

Visualizing Tim Tebow in Jets green makes my stomach turn. He’s still up on my son’s wall, all six-foot-plus fathead of him, Tebowing. My son, Giuseppe, who is two and a half years old, points to him and smiles: “Tim Tebow - champion, daddy!” I taught him that. I've also taught him lots of bad jokes, just like my dad taught me. It's a dad thing. My son pulls my finger and I oblige. But it's tough when you've got a hangover.

Now mind you, he’s already gotten Peyton Manning’s name down. It’s a little harder to say, but when you ask him who the new quarter back of the Denver Broncos is, he’ll tell you.

I argued vociferously here over the last week-plus for the opportunity to have my cake and eat it, too. The idea of Manning and Tebow together just seems awesome to me. I readily admit I don’t have the play-design acumen to say this is exactly how it’s going to work, but in the mindset of what Bellichick does with several of his players up in New England and with a masterful IQ QB like Manning, it seemed entirely plausible. And as the market, apparently, wasn’t that great (fourth and sixth - minus our seventh + paying 2.5 mil...meh?), I still think keeping him would have been my choice.

However, those Tebow-first fans yelling that Elway never wanted Tebow seem to be correct. I didn’t want to believe that. I’m a Broncos-first guy. I wasn’t particularly thrilled with the Tebow pick, but I was intrigued. I backed Orton as long as possible, wanting Tebow to develop under a somewhat solid front office (since all he’d known was turmoil). But when he got his chance, man did he make last year fun. In fairness, some of that fun has to do with a longer hangover that sums up what it has felt like being a Broncos fan since the last playoff win in 2005.

The thing is, there’s a big difference between backing the known and the unknown. Beyond just the physical appearance, the crown jewel piece that is QB sits amongst many other parts. I think, as a manager, Elway just wanted to spend a lot less time worrying about that one piece. Prepping for every game last season with Tebow at the helm must have been exhausting for EFX. To have to make that offense up on the fly and game plan in whatever odd and out of the box manner they did might seem exciting to fans because you just never know when Tebow’s going to do something amazing (and he did several amazing things last year). But to EFX, at some point, you have to think -- what are we doing here?

And I think that’s the bottom line. Most managers don’t like to be in completely unknown territory. They like the familiar, the reliable and that which gets the job done -- that is, health-bearing, Peyton Manning. I wish Tebow the best and thank him for a very exciting season. He still may be great or he may be forever a sideshow -- there’s truly no knowing with him. Manning, on the other hand, is great and I believe will make the Broncos a better football team in 2012.

Hangovers pass -- and Manning passes even better. My bad sense of humor is coming back. Hey Giuseppe -- come pull daddy's finger. I feel better already.

I know what the sources and experts are saying -- that this is a done deal. Tim Tebow is on his way out. I'm not saying I doubt them. What I don't understand and haven't gotten a solid answer as to yet is why he must leave.

I know what the sources and experts are saying -- that this is a done deal. Tim Tebow is on his way out. I'm not saying I doubt them. What I don't understand and haven't gotten a solid answer as to yet is why he must leave.

Like or dislike Tim Tebow (and he does have the super power of polarity!), Tebow's physical ability and will to win is impressive. Personally, I went from a curious skeptic to a major believer who put a fathead of #15 Tebowing on my son's wall for Christmas with a tear in my eye. I've pointed to Tim Tebow as a champion for my son and used him as a role model in encouraging my son to do brave things like give up his sippy cup that he used to need to go to sleep. Tim Tebow doesn't have a sippy cup. Something in my son's eyes, looking at big #15 on the wall, registered.

Don't get me wrong, I'm very excited the Broncos signed Manning. I think he's a once in a generation player that teams almost never get this kind of opportunity with. I truly believe he's going to bring a greatness to this team we, as fans, haven't seen since Elway. But that doesn't mean I want to see Tebow gone. And I don't understand why it even makes sense at this point.

The Broncos have paid Tebow the bulk of what his contract guarantees, by my understanding. He doesn't have leverage, nor have I seen or heard anything that indicates he'd want to go (outside of the suggestion by some that he "really wants to be a starter" -- well, duh). He also seems to be smart enough to understand Peyton's not going to play forever and he could learn by watching (please -- do me a favor and keep the Sorgi/Painter references off here. I'm not talking about Manning mentoring -- I'm talking about Tim learning by observation).

Also, the possibility of using Tebow in a non-traditional role is fascinating (anyone remember Aaron Hernandez as a running back when the Broncos got crushed?). Tebow is that plus one because what he lacks in speed, he more than adds value with his ability to read/option and throw the ball. This is backed up by former Indy GM and man who drafted Manning, Bill Polian in this podcast. Just listen and tell me he doesn't make some sense -- the kind of sense that makes you all excited thinking about the two-headed monster of Tebow and Manning.

The only possible detraction I see is the over-the-top Tebow fans who feel Tebow has been mistreated to the point that he needs to be traded or that, somehow, he should start over Manning if he stayed. I think that problem is handled on the field. Imagine a game where Peyton does his thing - 22-30, 320 yards, 3 TD, 0 INT and Tebow is on the field for say five snaps, runs four times for 25 yards, 1 TD and throws once for another score. Why isn't that possible? If you have solid reasons, beyond "because it won't", "[others] say it won't" or "Tebow really wants to be a starter" please enlighten me.

Tim, again, by my outsider's viewpoint only, doesn't seem to be the problem here. The Broncos front office, to me, frankly doesn't seem to be the problem here either. If there's one thing I think they've shown it's a pretty good handle on market value. I don't see them dumping Tebow just because or out of spite or because they're scared. They're not any of those things and they're not stupid. Tim Tebow has value - plain and simple. It's sometimes hard to quantify, but it's real and only a fool would let that go for nothing.

Now if a market can be created between, for example, Jacksonville and Miami, driving up the price on Tebow -- then that's something EFX should entertain in the best interest of the team. Again, my preference is Tebow stays, plays in special packages and develops into the QB many of us here believe he can be. At the same time, I try to understand this team from a business standpoint too, realizing what a dramatic effect that side of things has on the field.

EFX has clearly done something important here and they deserve the respect of landing Manning ahead of a hungry field; whether or not you agree with the move, it was impressive and shows serious front office skill. How they handle this next phase, however, may be just as important. A misstep with the treatment of Tebow (a.k.a. dumping him for less than [perceived or otherwise] market value -- and have fun determining what that should be), could hurt EFX's credibility longterm -- not just with fans but other free agents. Play their hand right, however, and these Broncos could be set up not just for the short term, but a sweet longterm return.

I choose Option C - Manning & Tebow

When arguments run hot, like the Manning/Tebow debate, camps tend to polarize. The arguments become one or the other. For whatever reason, it’s in my DNA to be more of a centrist. I was the peacemaker in my family and I wish to offer that take here to my MHR brethren.

When arguments run hot, like the Manning/Tebow debate, camps tend to polarize. The arguments become one or the other. For whatever reason, it’s in my DNA to be more of a centrist. I was the peacemaker in my family and I wish to offer that take here to my MHR brethren.

Bena’s poll this morning (and all due respect to our board leader) demanded the split. There was no option C (or D, E, etc. for that matter). From a clarity standpoint and a desire to check the pulse of the nation, I get the desire to do so. The problem with it is I don’t think it accurately reflects a large contingencies true feelings. It also forces people to choose sides, then defend (and the polarization and name calling ad nauseum).

I offer this: sign Manning to a contract with contingencies (based on health), a fair amount of money up front (because that’s what the market will demand in order to get him here), and tell Tim, you’re going to get the schooling of a life time. Much of the argument against Manning has been his body. There’s a reasonable concern there and the Broncos must continue to do their due diligence (I say continue because I choose to believe they are doing so -- I don’t take EFX for fools). At the same time, the truly unique asset Manning has and the one Tebow can learn the most from is his mind -- the way Manning sees the defense, the field and the game. I’m not suggesting Tim try to become Manning. Rather, I’d like to see him take pieces of what Manning does and add it to his already impressive set of skills.

Manning and Tebow are both unique talents -- Manning is simply far more polished and proven. One of the arguments against the two of them coexisitng I’ve seen is about Manning’s previous backups (Sorgi and Painter are brought up). These are silly comparisons in my opinion because neither of these QB’s were being groomed to replace Manning -- they truly were clipboard holders. Manning’s future, in a best case scenario, is relatively short. Three years is likely it.

I’ve heard people say Manning is not a teacher. I don’t know if that is or isn’t the case and frankly don’t care. I don’t want him to teach Tebow, except by example. I want Tebow to soak in what he sees, sit in film sessions, ask questions, walk in the footsteps, etc.. Again -- this is not to make Tebow Manning, this is to stretch Tebow in that direction.

The other thing is the idea that Tebow is different and more dynamic type of athlete/football player/QB than either Sorgi or Painter -- there’s really no argument there. That brings up the tantalizing possibility of using them together in some fashion -- whether it’s Tebow alone in certain situations or a wild hybrid with the two of them in the backfield for special calls. This fits Tebow best because, truth be told, at this moment he is a specialist. He’s not a complete QB in the fashion that Manning is -- to say otherwise is foolish. But to suggest Tebow isn’t valuable (especially when properly aligned) is equally foolish. Former Indy GM Bill Polian (the man who drafted Manning) suggested exactly this tack this morning.

Like all great leaders, Manning has a way of getting the best out of those around him. Tebow has a way of exciting his teammates, for sure -- but he doesn’t get the best out of them because he can’t use their talents yet as his skill set doesn’t meet theirs. He is a force of nature. As impressive and exciting as it is to watch him bull his way through, it’s not a good way to a long career (as we saw in the New England game). Tebow took a lot of hits last year, even when he was dictating them -- eventually that adds up. The idea is to limit him as he learns.

To the end of Manning's health and the unknowns -- all the more reason to keep Tebow. I see this as a year-by-year experiment. We don't know what they can do together. The possibilities are very exciting. And as much as fans would like the solidarity of knowing things for sure, this is the NFL and careers/franchises are turned and lost in a single play/injury.

Finally, there’s the fan base. And let’s not fool ourselves, it matters. What if you can combine the passion of the Tebow fans, Manning fans and Broncos fans? Come on! That’s awesome! I realize the biggest buy-in would have to be from the die-hard Tebow fans who feel he is ready now and should be traded if Manning is brought in. But in watching Tebow I feel he is nothing if not a good foot soldier. He knows his role and will play his part with full determination. He is an awesome talent and an even better person. This may be a bit of bitter medicine to swallow, but I believe Tebow understands we must taste the sour to know the sweet.

To summarize: I choose option C.

By the time the game was over, I was over it. Yeah, the first, second and third quarters were tough...when I was still holding out a modicum of hope. But by the fourth, it was painfully obvious even to (me) the most myopic/hopeful of fans: The season was over.

As the camera focused on Tebow looking for people to congratulate after the game, I stood and clapped for this team. Every season for the past five, I've felt so sick, so awful, so nauseous heading into the off-season. But not this year. I'm taking the lemons and best of what this overachieving group did and making sweet lemonade. I'm inspired. I'll bust my tail and finish my Masters program then find a great job to make my family proud.

I still take this game too seriously, I'm sure. But when the takeaway is positive like this, I can justify it. When the result is something that gives me good stuff to point at for my kids, I'm good with it. And, being completely honest, for the fact that I'm over 30 years into this team, I'm just too far to turn back.

I've seen the ups and downs and know there is enough good on this team to build on. And, apparently, there is management and coaching in place (can you imagine!?) to develop some of this young (occasionally painfully) raw talent we've watched this year. There were so many plays last night where I just saw the field dripping with opportunity. For whatever reason, this years Broncos were not able to capitalize in those situations. But because of the solidarity of the team from top to bottom, I'm very confident they'll be better next year. What more can one hope for?

Congratulations on a solid season, MHR and Denver Broncos! Thank you for the memories. I'll see you at draft time when we start putting the pieces together for next year.

I don’t think I’ve fully exposed myself to my feelings about the game yesterday. This became apparent to me as I read a well-written, but very simple recount of the events of the game and started crying.

There may not be crying in baseball but I’m unapologetic about my tears here.

I don’t think I’ve fully exposed myself to my feelings about the game yesterday. This became apparent to me as I read a well-written, but very simple recount of the events of the game and started crying.

There may not be crying in baseball but I’m unapologetic about my tears here.

Those tears have everything to do with believing in one’s self. They have everything to do with overcoming the longest of odds. This is such a huge part of my personal narrative. My favorite movie is “The Shawshank Redemption”. When Andy emerges from that sewer and raises his hands to the sky, with lightning, thunder and torrential rain trumpeting his accomplishment, faith and hope, I lose it every time. In another favorite, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” (stay with me), I lose it when Charlie finds the golden ticket and runs home to his family. And in “Star Wars”, when our heroes all just barely avoid being crushed in that damned trash compactor by the narrowest of margins...I scream in delight with them.

Like most of you, I’m presuming, I’ve seen many ups and downs in life. For reasons I’m not entirely sure of, I’ve almost always chosen to be an optimist. It’s just where I’m most comfortable. I’ve identified moments when I’ve become more cynical (in particular when I was first doing stand-up in L.A. -- and could even feel the great seductive power of audience approval - read: laughter - for my sharply emerging cynicism). In those moments, thankfully, I’ve been able to step back and consider who I want to be and how I want to see the world.

I want to believe. I want the best out of myself and the best for my friends, family and loved ones. This team has touched a deep nerve inside me. I haven’t felt this strongly since the first Super Bowl win. The second was great, mind you -- but Terry Bradshaw was right in his comments yesterday that this, right now, is the greatest moment. Regardless of what happens going forward, that game yesterday was one for a lifetime. It was something to build on, something to believe in, something to cherish.

Thank you, Denver Broncos. I am overwhelmingly grateful for having faith in and being a fan of you.

I salute you!

The Denver Broncos are AFC West Champs and are headed to the playoffs -- that is sweet. I don’t care how they got there -- they got there. Which teams get in to the playoffs is not decided in a single game, it is decided as the sum total of a team’s complete 16-game resume. And, by the skin of their horse teeth, our beloved Broncos did just enough to get in this year.

And guess what? Just enough is plenty in the NFL.

Momentum from week to week (or heading into the playoffs in this case) is, in my opinion, overrated. Each game (regular season or playoffs) holds its individual keys -- plays/moments that the game turns on. Injuries, breakdowns, elite plays -- they happen and throw their weight upon every game. Within each small battle is an opportunity to build toward the larger victory: the elusive and all-important “W”. It is, as Legend Lombardi said, the only thing.

I remember all too well what each of the last five seasons have felt like at the end -- that sick, pit-in-the-stomach, “how the hell am I going to swallow this bitter pill?’ feeling. From coach firings (twice), to massive roster turnovers and finger-pointing, it just felt like a nightmarish carousel the Broncos couldn’t get off.

But now, it simply doesn’t matter what happens in the playoffs; the fact is that these Broncos have earned their spot -- and if you doubt they earned it, you are inconveniently dismissing the most impressive and unlikely six game win streak of this NFL season (by any team). That run of six won the Broncos the ability to drop their last three and still get in.

The other reason it doesn’t matter is this team is already a success. I predicted an 8-8 record at the start of the season (not that that factoid matters in the grand scheme). What matters about it is that I felt the target was A) in range and B) would demonstrate significant growth -- the latter being something we’ve all been pining for years. They did it -- as a team and establishing an identity along the way.

Make no mistake, this team is limited and far from pretty. At the same time, this group has some great things to grow on. They are light years ahead of teams from the last few years heading into next -- better coaching, solid front office and a decent (not overwhelming) amount of young talent. Despite Tebow’s struggles in the last few games, I’m more convinced than ever that he’s going to flourish in the off-season and come back ready to take this team to the next level (whatever that may be). He looks like a rookie out there -- which, in game terms, he is. However, he has become more patient in the pocket (often painfully so, but you can see him working). His feet are much better. He is trying to make reads, but not always getting much help from the receivers and play calls. He is also missing things -- largely because right now he is playing not to lose. His confidence is clearly badly shaken, but I believe that’s largely because he’s trying to take on too much too soon -- I think some people lose sight of this mid-season transition and how much everyone (coaches, players and front office) are learning on the fly. Tebow needs time and continuity -- he will have both this off-season for the first time as a Bronco.

There are plenty of draft picks and interesting free agents to be considered -- but most happily, that is for another day...because the Broncos are in the playoffs now!!!

It is vitally important to celebrate this accomplishment. Why? It is a milestone. It is a monkey off the back. It is validation that yes, this team does belong in the playoffs -- where anything can happen. There’s only one team that really bothers me in the AFC --the Ravens. Just something about that team seems to snakebite the Broncos year in and out. No matter as the games are played one at a time and next week will be the Steelers.

My parting shot is this: today is all any of us have. Today, the Broncos are AFC West Champions. Enjoy it. Do not apologize for it. Don’t even engage the argument with anyone else. Grab your fellow Bronco lovers and toast this year’s accomplishments.

Congratulations Denver Broncos!!!

Can writers across MHR please stop asking people to "jump" with them at the end of the their story opening? If you've written something worthwhile, you don't have to ask anyone to read more -- they will because your writing has compelled them.
I know this is a relatively small style issue but I find it annoying. Trust what you've written. If the people don't jump, improve your writing.

**Addendum**

To clarify: I understand the need for a jump as a function of the site. I am not (and never was) arguing against that. I am asking for (as Rodney A succinctly puts it below), an end to the "cheesy pickup line" version of trying to encourage readers to keep reading your story after the jump by pointing it out in your story. To me, it sticks out and either says the reader doesn't get it or you don't trust your writing. Full disclosure: My bias comes from my background and job as a filmmaker and journalism instructor where I am constantly editing out inefficiencies in the story and structure.

I write this with great joy and satisfaction in my heart -- my wife and I are employed, our two, beautiful little children are healthy and well-fed and the Broncos are winning (again).

I write this with great joy and satisfaction in my heart -- my wife and I are employed, our two, beautiful little children are healthy and well-fed and the Broncos are winning (again).

Yesterday, on the same day the Broncos won their fifth straight game, I completed my third straight half-marathon -- mind you these are once a year events, but I still consider the accomplishment very satisfying. Suffice to say I hated running for my entire life up until a few years ago. I’ve always enjoyed working out, but it had been at a more furious pace previously -- I loved playing basketball for hours, lifting heavy weights, working on fast-explosion, etc.. I turned 39 just before our first son was born. I knew it was time for some changes -- my previously productive small business was a casualty of the floundering economy, I was unemployed (read: bringing in no money) for about six months, and my wife was working part-time in order to prepare for the pregnancy (I was the one who encouraged her to do this, just before my business went in the tank). Also, at 39, I knew that I probably needed to give my body a different type of regular workout as the pounding of the hardwood was having an increased number of ill-effects.

Just a week before my son was born, I finally got hired to teach a film class at the Art Institute here in Las Vegas -- it was just one class, but it was something. And I was assured if things went well, I’d get more classes. I would start immediately, with training taking place on the day after we’d meet our son.

One week later, my son was born with a congenital diaphragmatic hernia. Basically, he had a tear in the diaphragm that separates the lower and upper chest cavity. His intestines had breached the upper left side of his chest, collapsing his lung and pushing his heart to the side. He was given a 50/50 chance to live. I went to training with my son in the NICU, barely hearing and certainly not understanding anything that was going on. Something about insurance, conduct policies and how to design a syllabus. I was scared to ask for time off as jobs were so hard to find.

My son survived his surgery. 17 days later, miraculously, we brought him home (they thought he’d be in there for a minimum of six weeks). Flash forward a few months -- our son is coming along, slowly, surely and with about five doctor/specialist appointments a week. He’s colicky, suffering from some awful eczema and needs a lot of physical therapy, but he’s alive and home. Work is coming along, too. I’ve been given a second class to teach. I know I need to take care of myself physically through this process, too, as if I don’t I won’t have what my family needs from me. The quickest workout to give me what I need (meaning the smallest impact on my family) I can think of is running. As there is a half-marathon a few months down the road, I decide, against all other rational thoughts in my head, that I’m going to train for that. I have found that training with a specific goal in mind leads me to much greater results.

I’ve never run more than a 10k in my life, and that was just once, in high school on a lark. My memory of that was just barely beating the people cleaning the cones off the course to the finish line. I wrote a blog of my training, dedicating the runs to my son, hopefully showing him that anything is possible, especially the things that scare us, if we show up, work hard and are patient enough for the growth process to take place.

I finished that race in just under two hours. A year later I finished about six minutes under that. Yesterday I decided to let go of worrying about time, instead focusing on the larger picture of health and the great number of blessings I have in my life.

This brings me back to the Broncos and the happy parallels I draw to them in my life.

* This is a team that is dedicated to its faith -- mind you, I am not a Christian, nor am I pitching for or against it here. I believe this is about belief, regardless of the path one takes to it. This team clearly believes, as do I.
The change I have had in my ability to enjoy something that previously scared me (running) reminds me of this team, too. They didn’t know what they had in Tebow. They had to break from traditional mindset/beliefs. They have done it slowly and carefully. They have worked hard and, clearly, bought in to who he is and what he can do.

*The pain in the process is to be expected. The loss to the Lions was awful for the Broncos, but they fought through it -- and look at them now! My son has had three more surgeries since his birth, including one very scary one last spring that had him in the hospital for another 16 day stint. But if you met him today, you’d only see a healthy, happy and very rambunctious little boy.

*The greatest good in glory is giving it away. There’s a tremendous pride that comes with accomplishing a goal -- especially one where a significant amount of work has gone in. What I hear in the quotes from the Broncos are deferences -- repeated propping up of others, yes, Tebow more than others (for many reasons). But even (perhaps, especially) Tebow is quick to defer to his teammates and “the team” as a whole. He gets it.

*When I came home last night, my wife and six month old daughter were asleep. They wanted to stay awake, but my wife has to leave for work very early. My son (now 2.5 years old) shuffled out to greet his very sore daddy. He wanted a refill on his milk -- no problem there. As he rubbed the sleep out of his eyes, I bent down (painfully) and placed the medal I received for completing the race around his neck. I told him he was a champion. I thanked him for giving me the inspiration to do more. I had a hard time taking that medal off of him when we went to bed. This morning he put it back on. He walked around the house saying “I’m a champion”. I couldn’t be more proud or thankful.

Go Broncos.

I have one simple request: patience. I write this as a real-time account of Tebow taking over in the second half of the San Diego game, Oct. 9, 2011. Tebow has already had a few of those “almost - Oh my God!” plays, which certainly are exciting, but have not produced yardage. He’s also had a couple of bad throws, missing receivers on relatively simple routes. He’s also having really frustrating timing issues getting the ball from Walton -- something very fixable and something I know they will work out, but it’s going to take time with Tebow as the number one guy. I know this much: it’s time for the controversy to end.

These types of mistakes are, frankly, what the Broncos should expect. If this is the movement that begins Tebow time, then let it be. Orton is benched. If there’s anything -- anything -- any other team will give the Broncos for him, it’s worth taking. If not, he needs to remain a incredibly high-priced back up. Tebow needs every chance he can to fail, succeed and anything else in between. He has handled the situation from the position of back up very well. I voted earlier in the this week in the poll that he needs a full season (plus the offseason). The commitment needs to be made. I still think that’s true.

The Broncos need to run (McGahee please stay healthy, you beautiful beast), keep punching people in the mouth (Mays is flat out laying the wood), pray Champ stays healthy (that 3rd down breakup on Jackson was awesome) and, as much as anything, hang in there.

I about peed my pants when Tebow ran it in from the 12. That’s what he can do (run...and make people pee their pants). Oh my goodness that’s what he can do. It’s beyond hope -- it’s terrifying. It almost scares me because it seems like so long since I’ve felt hope at this level. This is the kind of thing defenses have to hate and fear.

I’ll be frank -- I know I’ve been one of the people calling for patience with Orton. I don’t feel wrong about that. And I don’t feel those who’ve been calling for Tebow from the start are right. It’s been a messy progression caused by a lot of factors, some mishandled by the front office (the attempted Orton trade before the season glares now). But whatever has happened is in the past. It is Tebow time.

If the defense continues to be this defense -- one that makes big plays that result in turnovers -- it will be that much better. Watching Tebow on first down run another play for an 8 yard gain up the middle is just crazy -- like I can’t believe what I’m seeing. If McGahee keeps running between the tackles the way he does they need to let Tebow bootleg around the side. And now the screen to Moreno -- perfectly executed. Holy crap. Has Moreno ever looked better than he did on that TD? The miss on the two-point conversion to tie hurts, but watching Tebow go back to the sideline and remind everyone all the team needs is three -- it’s freaking me out.

Phillip Rivers is a witch. I hate him. This is as tough as the Broncos have been on him in years, but he still does what he does -- that 38 yard pickup on the blitz was a great throw. With 2:46 to go -- this is it. If the defense comes up big on the next two downs, there’s a shot. This play takes it to the break. Oh...don’t tell me this is a stupid defensive penalty...that’s a chicken crap call.

Down to two minutes. The defense must shine like never before. Now. 3rd and six. Clock is running. Do or die. Do. Do. Do...alright, they did. And the clock will go down to thirty seconds. Tebow will have next to nothing time-wise, though. If the Broncos can block this kick. Or if Novak can grab a choke... No such luck. The Broncos need 6 now.

24 seconds. Fair catch. 80 yards in 24 seconds. It’s unreasonable. Beyond that, probably. You can see Lloyd telling Tebow on the sidelines right now -- just give me a chance, Tim. We’ll see. Completely unreasonable. The buzz in the stands is weird. Somehow people believe. Even at home I can feel what they feel. Brandon Lloyd you are ridiculous! That’s a catch. 16 seconds. My two year old son just woke up from his nap and is sitting next to me. Hope lives. I want him to learn what magic is right now. Daniel Fells with the huge catch across the middle. Geez -- can you give the ball to the ref a little slower!? Spike the ball. One second left. One more chance. The Chargers take a time out. I’m explaining to my son what this is and why this is. He can’t possibly understand. But he sits with me anyway. Here we go.

Not to be. Not...to...be. I give my son a hug and a kiss and tell him, "As long as you do your best, that's all you can do". We go out in the back yard to play. And so this is it -- excitement -- unabashed, amazing excitement and yet, another loss. What could have been -- who knows? Too many "what ifs". More time? Might have helped. It also might have led to more mistakes. Coming in at the half is different than wen you're game-planned for...But It doesn’t matter now. The die is cast. Fox and Elway must stick with Tebow. It is his time.

Have patience Broncos and Broncos fans -- it’s going to be (more? less? who knows!) bumpy, but, yes, it is already more exciting.

In the wake of the shooting outside of Candlestick Park last week and not long in the shadow of the near fatal beating of San Francisco Giants fan Brian Stow at Dodger Stadium, I've been thinking about fan violence in professional sports. Growing up in the Bay Area, I went to numerous sporting events at Candlestick Park and the Oakland Coliseum. They both had reputations for "being rough" (usually defined, at least in part, by a few fist fights in the cheap seats) but it seemed to be that if you stayed away from certain sections you would do no more than observe the fisticuffs. As far as what was reported, the violence ended there in the stadium (likely in the drunk tank).

Of the many sporting events I had been to in the Bay, the one thing I'd never been to was a Raider game. The obvious reason is number one (hate 'em), but number was the lingering pit in my stomach (is this okay?). I got over that in 2005 and went to see my beloved Broncs take on the Silver and Black in what was usually the friendly confines (thinking of A's games -- as they are my team in MLB) of the Coliseum. I wrote a post about that experience on the following site:

http://www.athleticsnation.com/2005/11/15/23326/834

As you see (if you took the time to check the thread) there are a lot of opinions about how I was treated. Generally, though, most Raider fans seemed to think what I did and how I handled myself was correct (or at least acceptable). It's hard to say, however, how close at any given time I was to being attacked. I can only say I wasn't (and I'm glad for it). I can also say my wife (who was with me) does not want me to ever go back to a Raider game and has forbid me from bringing our son.

I have also been to a number of games at Qualcomm to see the Broncos take on the Chargers and never had more than the passing insult (which I think one should reasonably expect in a visiting team's venue -- particularly when donning the opposing colors).

There's a lot to discuss here (I think), so I'll lay my personal beliefs out regarding the issue(s) of fan violence:

*I believe fans should be able to go to any stadium they want to wearing whatever team jersey they want to. I believe those same fans who exercise this right should recognize their position as guests and act accordingly. I also think guest fans should expect a certain amount of verbal abuse. There is a line that I would define as fighting words, challenges and excessive swearing. However, I do not believe the mere act of showing up at an opposing team's stadium (even a hated rival) in the opposing team's jersey is justification for violence upon said guest.

*I believe physical violence in response to anything involving a being a fan of and/or watching a sport is silly (I make the differentiation there because playing a sport brings up a different set of, imho, more defensible excuses for physical violence -- though even there, that's not nearly carte blanche -- just more defensible via "heat of the moment" of the actual participant).

*I am concerned about what I'm perceiving as the escalation of violence -- from (non-coma inducing) fist fights to shootings.

I look forward to the discussion and hearing about your thoughts on opposing fans in Mile High, being an opposing fan (yourself) in someone else's park and all the responsibilities and considerations those situations entail.

I’ve seen a lot of “threats” from fans here boycotting the Broncos if they (the fans) don’t get/see what they want. People have said they have already cancelled road trips, NFL television packages and even season tickets because they are upset (before a single preseason game has even been played!!!). All of that is fair and certainly within ones rights to do at any time and for any reason. What I’m curious about is how much it takes for fans to take such drastic actions.

This walks a thin line here -- between being an individual who simply feels he/she has better things to do with his/her time or being a whiny, myopic fan who wants it their way or no way. Let me be clear: I don’t want to ignite a debate between the ”legitimacy” or “realness” of one fan vs. another -- I don’t know how to qualify fanship off the top of my head (though I suppose that would make an interesting study -- perhaps another time). And, for the record, let me state that I don't believe criticism of ones team does not make you a lesser fan. We all express fandom differently. However, this particular phenomena, drawing a line in the sand to the point where a fan jumps off the bandwagon of his/her favorite team completely (or threatens to do so), is what I'm interested in.

What I would like to understand better is the answer to the title of this post: Under what conditions will you cheer for this Broncos team?

Only if the team is exciting? If so, what does it mean to be exciting? Do they have to average 25 points or more a game?

Only if Tebow starts?

Only if Orton doesn't play?

Bronco fans who date or remember back to the Super Bowl years (and, my, but they have travelled far and quickly so) remember a team that often dominated the first quarter then choked the other team away. Many of those games (particularly in the title defense year) almost seemed like non-events. The Broncos would score a TD on the first drive, get a three and out or turnover from the D, then suddenly be up 14-0 before the other team had a chance to enjoy their Gatorade. Great offense. Opportunistic and play-making D. Solid and occasionally spectacular special teams.

The fact of the matter is, those teams are gone. That identity is gone. Because of the enormous number of changes over 15 years since that time (personnel, front office, home field, etc.), something new must be in place.

Now the what if: are you still a fan if the identity of this team is completely different? What if they play very solid D, adequate but not flashy special teams and ball-control O. What if the team wins games by scores of 10-7 and 7-6? What if they finish 8-8 and show reasonable improvement over last year (that would be four more wins). Does the team have to win the way you want them to win in order for you to like the team? Are you more in love with the memory of Shanahan’s teams or the fact that they are the Denver Broncos regardless of who is at the helm?

Is it the wins, money? Or is it the way they wins? Or...?

 <fieldset class="poll-box">
 <legend>Poll</legend>

Have you decided (as of today) that you will not watch this Broncos team (assuming John Fox as coach and Kyle Orton as quarterback, as they seem to have the most divisiveness pointed at them)?

3) I will wait until the regular season to make my decision (please add what you're looking for in the comment section if you select this option)

6 votes

And we, Broncos Faithful, know the power of angry mob, having witnessed one here last year. I’m not suggesting the fans hold the reigns completely, but, we do hold some power -- particularly when banded together and angry. The Dolphins are now experiencing that.

I mention this to say, keep cool, fellow Bronco fans. It’s the impatient fools and the angry mobs that consistently overpay or simply miss out. The Orton/Tebow thing has not had a chance to play out yet. We haven’t even seen the first preseason game. Tebow is going to continue to be a big story every time he blows his nose because he’s Tim Tebow -- we, as fans, looks silly jumping at every story and criticism.

To the front office: Have EFX made mistakes? Sure. Are they the only front office to make mistakes. Surely not. The original Orton trade attempt blew up in their face. Okay. Guess what? It’s done. Time to move on. Have they made some solid moves since then? Certainly. And, perhaps, some of the most solid may show out to be the ones they didn’t make. Again, it needs time. They need time to be evaluated. Now is not the time to do that.

This is a new regime. Is Tebow going to suffer more because of it (and the lockout)? Probably. By some reports, it appears that way initially. Orton simply has a higher QB IQ at this point (based on NFL experience), therefore making him better suited to the immediate needs of the team (if, indeed, we are to assume they’re trying to win now. I, for one, do assume that. I think it’s ridiculous conspiracy to suggest they would tank the season before it even started for a shot at a promising but unknown talent the next year). Tebow has loads of awesome intangibles that I think we all look forward to seeing -- but he’s going to take time. He was and remains a project -- a very exciting one, but still a project.

Would Tebow be better served in his development by starting right now? Maybe. Maybe not. If he’s hurt by this development/waiting process, however, he’s already answered the question of whether or not he’d ever be ready. He was pissed (understandably) by the brass ring being nearly within his grasp and he sounds like he’s just going to use it being pulled from him to fire him up even more. To that end, I say: Good for you (and we Broncos fans), Tim!

Here’s one thing I do know: you (fans) don’t know for sure what’s best for Tebow’s development. And neither do I. And neither (with absolute certainty) does John Fox. But as Fox IS the Broncos head coach and has a longer and stronger NFL track record than anyone else I’m hearing from, I’m backing Fox. If you’re doubting John Fox now and making summary judgments about his coaching ability/decision-making before he’s even coached a single preseason game I say you’re being absolutely willfully patently ridiculous. I don’t care if you’re a coach (former or present). I don’t care if you’re a paid pundit / “expert”. John Fox is the coach of the Broncos with exactly ZERO games of record under his belt for the Broncos and a reasonable track record of NFL coachin experience behind him. And you’re going to say you KNOW better than him for sure? Methinks you’re full of it. He knows better than you do. He understands more than you do. He’s earned his position and his shot.

And as those cries increase from Miami (as I would lay odds on them beginning from other markets, too -- this is a QB league right now and “the grass is always greener with the next QB”...don’t you see that irony right in front of you?!?), Orton’s value will only increase. The Broncos will almost certainly get offers on Orton before the trade deadline. Where the Broncos are at as a team at that point and how Orton is performing individually will have everything to do with the value of those offers.

In the meantime, how about we quell the angry mob amongst ourselves. Let’s allow this thing to play out -- at least through the bleedin’ preseason for a brand new regime that hasn’t even gotten it’s feet wet! -- before we start making hyperbolic statements that only serve to divide. Remember our role: we are fans. We know the surface, we do not know the underbelly or the innards.

We don’t have to sing kumbaya, but I know we can all say: Let’s go BRONCOS!

We don’t have to sing kumbaya, but I know we can all say: Let’s go BRONCOS!

...perhaps it’s time to do something more productive with your time than repeat that message here over and over (and over) again. Now before you go off in a tizzy with a “don’t tell me who is or isn’t a fan” or “I can do what I want! This is a free blogosphere” rant, let me explain myself:

This is a free blogosphere” rant, let me explain myself:

I’m jealous of you. You, my friend, are certain. You know for sure. This season is done. The Broncos are awful. They are officially 0-16 before the season has started. EFX are horribly over-matched. Orton, the QUARTERBACK CONTROVERSY and the ghost of McD have drug us into the pit of hell and this is where we are. Our goose is 1000x overcooked and any playoff consideration (let alone respectability) is so ridiculous Jim Mora wouldn’t even be able to croak a syllable, let alone chirp his famous retort to the famous question of his (then) Saints playoff-worthiness if asked about this year’s Broncos.

With such certainty, you have the freedom to spend time with friends and family, and simply enjoy life. You can take a walk. You can work out. You can take a beer-making class (I’ve had my eye on one of those for some time, myself)! Maybe you can come back here with your new found knowledge and share it with those of us fools who don’t yet get it -- we’ll almost certainly need the buzz.

And, when we certainly suck, we will almost certainly land Luck. Right? That, according to some in the certain crowd, is even the overt plan (thanks to Elway’s Stanford connection and all). It sounds pretty good. It’s only one more year. And you don’t need to waste another minute of it here because you already know how it ends!

So get out there and live life. Who’re the winners? Certainly not the Broncos (or the rest of us who keep hoping for something positive to happen). You’re the winners! Please do stop by at the end of the year and remind the rest of us who still don’t know exactly how you were right. Maybe it will teach us to listen next time.

I got a small, simple email that moved me deeply this morning. It was from my dad:

Bob,

I found myself with tears running down my face as I read the various comments. Very special.

Love,
Dad

His email was in response to the number of very kind comments left on the thread here at AN regarding our documentary, "Boys of Summer".

My dad has not very often been the type to wear his emotions on his sleeve. More often than not, growing up, I really had to guess at what was going through his head as his disposition defined stoicism. As the Parkinson's has progressed, he (and I) have noticed an increased sensitivity. Part of it might simply be age; part of it might be vulnerability, maybe even sadness for the time that has gone by (those of you who have seen the film know how we reflect on this early in the film). There are countless other possibilities, too, that could be parsed, I'm sure. The bottom line is, he is more sensitive -- but not usually prone to veritable outbursts like that email he sent this morning.

It means the world to me that he is touched. It means the world to me that our journey and experience has meant something to you, our brothers and sisters here at AN. Thank you, again, all for your continued kindness and support. I've known for a long time this movie meant more and was meant for more than just what my dad and I got out of it. You all continue to show that and we are very grateful for it.

“That place ain't loud anymore. It might be too comfortable.” – John Elway

Like many here, I watched the Tim Tebow mini-doc on ESPN the other afternoon with great anticipation – and I was not disappointed. I had the good fortune of catching it while I was on the treadmill and never did an hour go by so quickly. I was pumped, moved to tears and nodding my head throughout. Whether or not Tebow actually ends up being “the guy” or not, I love what he is putting forth. He is the right attitude.

@font-face {
 font-family: "Times New Roman";
}p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal { margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; font-size: 12pt; font-family: "Times New Roman"; }div.Section1 { page: Section1; }

And that brings me to “us” – the fans. It’s time for us to get in shape, too. I’ve been hearing about “true” home field advantages – some say Seattle has the best, others say KC or pick your dome. There’s also been a fair amount of buzz around here about bringing back the old Mile High Magic – specifically as it related to Elway, who is now, finally and officially back in the fold. He is back. Tebow is in place, saying and doing the right things (again, not saying he will or won’t be the guy, but he’s a great face for it at the very least in the meantime). Thinking about “The Drive”, “The Helicopter” and other iconic moments help bring it forth again and push what I’m after here now:

It is our turn, as a fan base, to do our part. It’s easy to be in critical mode – and I’m not saying it’s wrong or that it lacks certain value. But what are we, as fans, actually doing positively to be the best fans we can be? How are we helping the Broncos in a meaningful way (this assumes, of course that can be done at all – more on that later)?

I say it starts with getting in shape – literally. Get your butt to the gym, pound the pavement, do what you’ve got to do -- but get it going on. When you feel on top of your game physically you will be able to do everything in your life (including be a fan) better. Need inspiration? Watch some Tim Tebow and tell me you don't want to climb a freakin' mountain or split some wood.

Next up – get on board. Again, questioning is fair, criticism is fair and part of the equation. Another component, however, is the belief it’s possible for the Broncos to be a good team again and that the pieces are in place. Winning and losing are both contagious. I urge us all to use the influence we have to not allow the Broncos to rot in last season’s woes (or the last several, if you wish to look at that way).

Instead, let’s start anew with the very necessary element of hope. Elway is in the house. I believe adopting an “In John We Trust” attitude will do us all wonders. He’s made it clear through his words and actions (the transparency and activity he’s shown, among them) that he thinks the Broncos need us. Again – I’m not suggesting we go blindly, nor without reasonable questions when warranted, but enough so that we are building alongside Elway as this reformation happens (rather than cynically holding off until they prove it by winning).

This brings me back to a question that has gotten some play here: can fans make a difference? I say yes. So do many players. Don’t get me wrong – fans are not a substitute for what must happen on the field. But can fans be a source of inspiration – something that adds just the right bit at just the right moment to draw a flag from a frustrated opponent who can’t hear the signals to pumping up a Bronco enough to make that play by an inch instead of missing it by the same measure.

The bottom line is we have a relatively clean slate, with awesome pedigree and history. Further, nobody knows what the future holds – many, many questions that simply won’t get answered until next fall. Regardless of our (sometimes) contentious feelings about how the Broncos should proceed, I think we all agree on what we want: a championship Denver Broncos football team once again. We, the fans, are a part of that and can do something positively about it. Don’t believe me? Ask Elway.

Just last Friday, I posted a poll on MHR to get the feel from the users of this site on the status of McDaniels’ job. The question was straight-forward: “Do you think Coach McDaniels should be fired right now?” (the last part of the question is key – more on that later when the Irony Police enter).

Just last Friday, I posted a poll on MHR to get the feel from the users of this site on the status of McDaniels’ job. The question was straight-forward: “Do you think Coach McDaniels should be fired right now?” (the last part of the question is key – more on that later when the Irony Police enter).

I closed the poll just before game time, Sunday, so as not to see the numbers swing one way or the other depending on the emotional content of the game. Of the 350+ who cast votes, 67% answered “no (McDaniels should not be fired)” with 23% saying "yes" and 9% marking "not sure". This was partially a test on my part, to see if MHR was, indeed, the outlier I perceived it to be as anywhere else I seemed to turn, the drumbeat for McDaniels head was increasing frenetically.

In full disclosure, had I personally answered the question I would have said “no” as well. I say that so that no one thinks I’m here to say “See!” in the aftermath of McDaniels firing or anything like it. I did not predict he would or should be fired. I actually didn’t want him to be fired. I simply asked a specific question. I do my best, generally, to assume nothing, knowing that I empirically “know” very little. I have opinions, like everyone else, but I realize they are mine and I do my best to not pass them off otherwise.

I put up a follow-up post (yesterday) just hours before McDaniels firing. I wanted to add context to what I had written and the results. I also noted that some people had misread and/or misunderstood what I wrote in regard to not asking for comments or debates on the question itself. From that, an apparently disgruntled poster told me my “pole” (sic) was flawed; he said next time I should make it “smarter and more realistic”, to incorporate his opinion which was not listed in the poll.

Enter the Irony Police: the “unrealistic” happens – McDaniels is fired a few hours later. I can’t speak to the intelligence (or lack) of the original post and poll, but I think they speak for themselves and I do proudly stand behind them.

I’m not here to blast this one poster. He is who he is and this is but an example made for a few specific points:

1) This is not the Denver Post, ESPN or other board/comment section and I believe those who are here are glad for it. Said another way, the ground rules and mods are here for a reason. There are loads of other places to rip people personally, curse up a storm and scream like a banshee in all caps if you don’t like the rules here.

2) No one’s opinion is fact. The manner in which you present your opinion matters. I don’t mean to say every opinion needs “in my opinion” next to it, but there are numerous other ways to qualify one’s comments (e.g.: “it seems to me…”, “from what I see…”, “in my experience…” – just to name a few).

3) Everyone’s opinion is valid and should be respected (even if disagreed with). One way to offer respect if you are just feeling too emotional is to simply ignore the comment that angered you.

4) Personal attacks and bullying are childish. We’re better than that.

It is a new day and a new era for all Broncos fans. I ask that we renew our efforts to grow this community at MHR positively with respect for all. For better or worse, McDaniels and all the drama that surrounded his tenure is gone (save for the residual effect…which leaves lots of opportunities). There’s been sharp polarization here for some time. But I do believe we all want the same things; we all bleed orange; we all want to feel great again about this team we’re so insanely passionate about and we just want some (final shout out to McDaniels) “MF’n” wins.

Happy Holidays and GO BRONCOS!!!

I opened the above poll on Friday, Dec. 4 at approximately noon and closed it just after kickoff on Sunday, Dec. 6. The reason I used this window was to try to avoid those still in reactionary mode from the previous weeks game and those reacting overly-emotionally to the days game.

One of the things I draw from the poll is that MHR is, indeed, a unique place, compared to the MSM outlets I've seen and heard that appear to be jumping all over the fire Coach McDaniels bandwagon. As of last week, at least, the fans here overwhelmingly want McDaniels to continue (at least for the time being).

I also want to make note of the way I wrote the question (which I did mention in the poll notes, but some seemed to brush by): I wasn't asking if McDaniels should be fired at season's end or, if he were fired, who should replace him. I wanted to take an immediate pulse and that was all. I'm not interested in anyone's prognosticating abilities or debates of what "might" happen -- frankly that's what the bulk of MSM journalism seems to have become and I don't care for it. As I earned my B.A. in what now seems to be an "old school" Journalism philosophy (esp. as I am currently working on a Master's in the subject, 20 years later), what I perceive to be the current wave of speculation over reporting feels disingenuous at best -- particularly when not clearly separated from what is said to be "news".

Before I get too sidetracked, I'll finish with this (for now): the poll confirms what I believed about MHR and I'm very, very glad it exists as the outlier it is; especially for all the reasons listed in Harv's fantastic fanpost (click here if you haven't read it). I'll be running another poll this Friday-Sunday -- this time with the comments shut off (if I can find the admin tab).

Go Broncos!

I'm of the belief that MHR is a unique place in the blogosphere; it seems (to me) the creators/moderators have set MHR up to be a place for Broncos fans who want to do more than trash the Broncos, et. al, relentlessly (though I realize there is space/time given for that, particularly in the heat of the moment and with a W-L record that no one here is happy with or used to seeing).

I'm not looking for comments, defenses or political speeches here on why McDaniels should or shouldn't be fired (there's plenty of that in other threads) -- just a straight up, yes, no (or, for you fence-sitters, "not sure") vote right now, based on the current information. Please note -- this is not asking do you think he will be fired (don't want people reading other peoples thoughts or guessing what may happen), rather, it's what you, personally, think should happen with the current information.

The reason I'm interested in this poll is it seems the MSM is running with the theme that the majority of the Broncos fanbase wants McDaniels fired. I think that's a huge supposition. If the poll question was, are you angry/disappointed/nauseated, etc. with the Broncos performance this season, you're going to get a resounding yes. But as for actual blame...well, let's see what MHR folk think.

I'm here to call for a little sanity in the midst of the in (-sanity). Anger, frustration, bitter disappointment and otherwise are all understandable, given the current state of the franchise. Like many have stated here, I've been a fan since 1977 when, as a seven-year old, I walked in to a friends' family's Orange Crush party, was instantly hooked and never looked back.

Anger, frustration, bitter disappointment and otherwise are all understandable, given the current state of the franchise. Like many have stated here, I've been a fan since 1977 when, as a seven-year old, I walked in to a friends' family's Orange Crush party, was instantly hooked and never looked back.

When the Broncos and Elway finally got over the hump, I have no problem admitting I cried. It was incredible. The only problem was it took what were regularly high expectations for the team and sent them into the stratosphere. That, I think, leads to at least some of the frustration the fanbase (myself included) feels today. We expect the Broncos to win. 8-8 is a bad year for us (with my sister as a Raiders fan, let me tell you, she knows bad seasons).

As a fan who, as of 2000, had never lived in Denver, regular information about the Broncos was one thing I always craved. When the Denver Post became available online, it was incredible! To get the "inside" scoop was amazing. Then started the boards, where I figured I would be able to monologue back and forth with other passionate Broncos fans -- only, as many of you have seen, that turned to crap with name-calling and negative diatribes.

Then came MHR -- an unabashed Bronco fansite. I loved even more when the mods came on and said this is our team, win or lose -- so cut it with the McDaniels nicknames (among other positive ground rules). Which is where I'm at now. I'm not happy with the latest allegations and certainly frustrated with the 3-7 record this year. But this is not the Denver Post. I'm asking the mods to please put a muzzle on or ban those who can't behave with a little more homerism. That's what I want from this site -- it's not supposed to be unbiased. It's supposed to be for fans -- and the type of fans I want around here are ultra-quick, reactionary, knee jerk "fire Mc(gradeschool taunt)" any time the wind blows. It's just taken what's good and unique out of this site. And for those who don't like it, there are plenty of other places to go and gripe. Where else is there for fans who want a little more patience and less of the other overtly available stuff?

Difficult as this may sound, please know I don't point this request personally toward anyone. I'm just sad to see a site that I enjoy be filled with this much negativity.
