Athlon's Top 25 Players of the BCS era
There are "only" two Longhorns on the list, but they were #6 Ricky Williams and #2 Vince Young. The author says VY was the greatest player he's ever seen on a college gridiron, which fuels the discussion of whether he or Tebow really deserves to be #1.
Corey Knebel named Freshman Pitcher of the Year by Collegiate Baseball
Also, Knebel and Weiss were both named to the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American team. Congratulations to the future stars.
WVU's Holgorsen reportedly kicked out of casino by police
From the Charleston Daily Mail:
Holgorsen's behavior allegedly reached a point that necessitated involvement from on-site security, sources said. Holgorsen was escorted out of the casino with the episode caught on surveillance. University representatives who were with Holgorsen were said to have then intervened. No arrest was made.
Police records indicate Metro 911 received a call from the casino at 3:13 a.m. that night. A "white male" was said to be "refusing to cooperate with the casino's management." Casino supervisors had the male detained at the time.
The Nitro Police Department was dispatched to the scene. The official records do not say what happened next, but it's believed Holgorsen was released under the supervision of those he was with.

Hix out with concussion; Kelley to start
UT senior left tackle Kyle Hix, who has 37 career starts, will miss Saturday's game against Oklahoma State with a concussion, the Longhorns announced Thursday night. That leaves the critical spot in the hands of redshirt freshman Paden Kelley.
Tim Brewster could be fired if Purdue beats Minny tomorrow
Minnesota would not confirm nor deny a report Friday that it will fire coach Tim Brewster if the team loses Saturday at Purdue.
Citing sources with knowledge of the situation, 1500espn.com reported Friday that the university drafted a press release and media plan Thursday to institute if the Gophers lose Saturday to fall to 1-6.
The 1500espn.com report said Brewster would have to decide whether he wants to remain as coach for the season's final five games.
Eh...anyone want him back as tight ends coach?
Big 12 approves round-robin football schedule
As most probably expected, the Big 12 will play a round-robin schedule, meaning nine conference games per year. Teams like Texas and OU at the Cotton Bowl (or KU-Mizzou at Arrowhead), who play big games at neutral sites, will play four home games, four away games, and the one neutral-site game.
Sergio Kindle hospitalized with head injury
From PFT: We've confirmed that Ravens linebacker Sergio Kindle has been hospitalized with a head injury suffered on Thursday night. A league source tells us that Kindle initially had some swelling inside his skull, but the situation has since improved significantly.
"Members of our medical staff, including Bill Tessendorf and Dr. Andy Tucker, have spoken with doctors in Texas. We understand Sergio is stable at this time and that he is being tested and observed," Ravens General Manager Ozzie Newsome said in a release posted on the team's website.

OT Mike Williams may miss season with blood clots
Veteran Washington Redskins offensive lineman Mike Williams, who overcame weight problems to become a valuable member of the unit in his first season with the team, is expected to miss the 2010 season because of blood clots near his heart, two people familiar with the situation said late Friday night.
Rick Gosselin's second 2010 mock draft
As I said when I posted his first 2010 mock draft, Rick Gosselin's final mock draft is almost always the most predictive of any of the pundits every year. Without re-posting everything I said, I'll just state again that Gosselin's final mock (will be released Thursday, I believe) is almost invariably the most accurate one on the planet. And again, he's not so much a talent-evaluator as a terrific ear-to-the-ground guy. More, including the actual mock, after the jump.

Rich Gosselin's first 2010 mock draft
Rich Gosselin's final mock draft is almost always the most predictive of any of the pundits every year. It's not that he's a particularly excellent appraiser of talent, but rather that he has a great knack for taking the pulse of probably the best college of insider sources across the entire league. He knows the right people in almost every war room, and he gets great info.
However, that final mock draft is usually quite different from his first and second ones. A quote about his mock draft approaches after the jump:

2009 top recruit Bryce Brown to transfer
Following the announcement that his brother, Arthur, had chosen to transfer from Miami to Kansas State, Bryce Brown left the Tennessee program on the first day of spring practice. My guess is that he'll end up at K-State as well, but there's no word on that yet.
OU girl: Alpha Chi hates me! [...] I just wanted it to snow!
Dirt burglar thought a fire extinguisher would make for nice snow in the middle of the night in her sorority. Fire alarms ensued. Worth a laugh, or maybe a chuckle. Or you could almost fall off the couch like wifey and I when we saw this. hat-tip to Tosh.0.

Longhorns at the Senior Bowl: measurements
The surprising news to me is that Houston comes in just a shade under 6'3", which definitely has to be good for his draft stock. Hell, that's definitely at least an inch taller than Glenn Dorsey was. I was concerned Houston would only be 6' even.
#33 Lamarr Houston DL Texas

3-4 draft prospect rankings
I'm not usually one who goes nuts for the smaller sites that look like they were made by some guy with a laptop in his mother's basement, but this one actually impressed me. I agree with the rankings on the NTs, except I might put Troup at #3. Kindle, Sapp, and Hardy should all be higher at OLB. But overall, it does a solid job of listing all the guys I'd consider relevant at the positions that are of particular interest to teams running the 3-4.
An Argument Against Colt McCoy
Colt McCoy’s stellar collegiate career has him high on the NFL Draft radar, regarded by some as a potential first-round pick. The dual-threat quarterback has four years of starting experience and results against good competition, and possesses the intangibles that will give him a chance to succeed. Faced with the daunting task of replacing Vince Young and defending a national championship as a freshman, the perennial Heisman candidate and 2009 Maxwell Award winner had a career completion percentage of 70.33, just shy of the all-time mark held by Hawaii’s Colt Brennan (70.39 percent). This study, however, analyzed each throws from four games this season (at Oklahoma State, vs. Kansas, at Texas A&M and vs. Nebraska) in an argument against McCoy’s draft status and future in the NFL, exposing his accuracy by an offense heavily aided by short passes. The Texas offense uses safe passes as a substitute for running plays and is notorious for short routes such as quick screens, slants, shovel passes and working underneath against defensive backs. Colt may have the ultimate gunslinger name, but with the following analysis it is easy to see that he will not live up to his name at the next level.
Each of McCoy’s throws in the four games were tracked on the basis of excluding yards after catch and recording completion percentage on throws behind the line of scrimmage versus 1-9, 10-19, 20-29, 30-39 and 40+ yards downfield. In this study, McCoy completed 66.67 percent of passes, slightly below the 70.6 percent on the 2009 season. During these games he threw for nine touchdowns and three interceptions, a ratio higher than the 2.25 TD/INT for the season and the 2.48 for his career.
Rolando McClain declares for 2010 draft
Alabama linebacker Rolando McClain, the centerpiece of the Crimson Tide's national championship defense, announced Monday that he was skipping his senior season to enter the NFL draft.
2010 BCS National Championship Game Program
Pretty neat guide, 204pgs. long. It runs through all the games for each team this season, plus all the usual stuff. What it does not list is the halftime performance, which I've been trying to find for a while. Normally the BCS does something brilliant, like pushing Lenny Kravitz to the back of the stage while Ashlee Simpson lip-syncs her way into the hearts of football fans, but I'd really just like to know.
Charles, DJ set records for KC
It's been rough being a Chiefs fan recently, but it was fantastic to watch a couple of star Longhorns team up to destroy Denver today.
Jamaal Charles: 25 rush for 259yds., 2TD
Derrick Johnson: 5 tackles, 2 interceptions for touchdowns, 2 passes defensed
This was just about the most amazing display by a couple of Longhorns in one game I've seen at the NFL level. Had Charles not been pulled a little over halfway through the fourth quarter, he might've had a shot at the NFL single-game rushing record of 295yds., set by none other than Adrian Peterson. As it is, he just shattered Larry Johnson's team record of 211yds., and Derrick Johnson became the first Chief to ever return two interceptions for touchdowns in the same game.
Congratulations to Jamaal Charles and Derrick Johnson!
ArrowheadPride.com (SBNation Chiefs site) story: Two Former Longhorns Propel Chiefs to Victory Over Broncos
Forbes: Texas is CFB's most valuable team
"By our reckoning, the Longhorns cleared $59 million in the season for University of Texas academics and athletics. We put the capitalized value of the Longhorns at $119 million, $11 million more than second-ranked University of Notre Dame, which topped our previous two rankings."
Darius White is rated by Scout.com as a five-star prospect and the nation's No. 1 wide receiver recruit. Sources indicated that White may have shortened his list of possible destinations to two schools — Oklahoma State and LSU.
Ryan Reynolds denied appeal for sixth year
Coach Bob Stoops confirmed Monday that senior middle linebacker Ryan Reynolds has lost his appeal to the NCAA for a hardship waiver that would have given him an extra year of eligibility because of injuries.
Instead, Reynolds, who overcame three major knee injuries while in college, will play his final game as a Sooner in the Sun Bowl.
Reynolds missed OU’s regular-season finale against Oklahoma State with a strained hamstring. Stoops, however, said Reynolds has been practicing and should be fine for the bowl game.

Texas' Mack Brown: Elite Football Coach or Lucky CEO of a Loaded Program?
Brown is old-school, charming, hands-off. His hellacious motivational rants are notably rare, and are directed, more often than not, at referees or other coaches rather than players.
But is he also just enormously lucky? Lucky in a way that excludes him from the more outstanding coaches of the game?
Is winning the only thing making Mack Brown a good coach? Or do the Longhorns win because he coaches?
Gerald McCoy to enter 2010 draft
If there was ever any question that DT is the strongest position in the draft this year, this announcement just ended it. McCoy's a beast, and would make a fine top-five pick.

ESPN: Georgia, FSU might hire away two top 'Bama defensive assts.
ESPN: We've already seen several assistants on the move in the SEC, some by their own choosing and others not.
The next could be Alabama assistant head coach/linebackers coach Sal Sunseri, who's being wooed by Jimbo Fisher at Florida State. They're supposed to talk this week.
Alabama may also have to fight off Georgia to keep defensive coordinator Kirby Smart. The Bulldogs are expected to make a lucrative run at Smart for their defensive coordinator job after Mark Richt overhauled his defensive staff last week, firing coordinator Willie Martinez, defensive ends coach Jon Fabris and co-coordinator/linebackers coach John Jancek.
