Ryan Reynolds denied appeal for sixth year

+

Coach Bob Stoops confirmed Monday that senior middle linebacker Ryan Reynolds has lost his appeal to the NCAA for a hardship waiver that would have given him an extra year of eligibility because of injuries. Instead, Reynolds, who overcame three major knee injuries while in college, will play his final game as a Sooner in the Sun Bowl. Reynolds missed OU’s regular-season finale against Oklahoma State with a strained hamstring. Stoops, however, said Reynolds has been practicing and should be fine for the bowl game.

Texas' Mack Brown: Elite Football Coach or Lucky CEO of a Loaded Program?

28

Brown is old-school, charming, hands-off. His hellacious motivational rants are notably rare, and are directed, more often than not, at referees or other coaches rather than players. But is he also just enormously lucky? Lucky in a way that excludes him from the more outstanding coaches of the game? Is winning the only thing making Mack Brown a good coach? Or do the Longhorns win because he coaches?

Gerald McCoy to enter 2010 draft

1

If there was ever any question that DT is the strongest position in the draft this year, this announcement just ended it. McCoy's a beast, and would make a fine top-five pick.

ESPN: Georgia, FSU might hire away two top 'Bama defensive assts.

1

ESPN: We've already seen several assistants on the move in the SEC, some by their own choosing and others not. The next could be Alabama assistant head coach/linebackers coach Sal Sunseri, who's being wooed by Jimbo Fisher at Florida State. They're supposed to talk this week. Alabama may also have to fight off Georgia to keep defensive coordinator Kirby Smart. The Bulldogs are expected to make a lucrative run at Smart for their defensive coordinator job after Mark Richt overhauled his defensive staff last week, firing coordinator Willie Martinez, defensive ends coach Jon Fabris and co-coordinator/linebackers coach John Jancek.

Florida star end Dunlap arrested for DUI

11

Not to cast stones or anything, but: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kameg said officers found Dunlap's car stopped at a green light. "They approached the car and found the suspect slumped over in the driver's seat," Kameg said. "He appeared to be asleep. The car's windows were cracked so they attempted to wake him up. They talked to him and he would only open his eyes for a few seconds and then fall back asleep." ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This could potentially cost him a lot of money and the team an impact defensive player for the conference championship and bowl games.

Hicks cancels USC visit

5

A snip from ESPN: Hicks, the No. 2 prospect in the ESPNU 150, has had to cancel his trip to USC. Hicks' mother was unable to arrange a flight to Southern California, so her son called his trip off. Hicks may reschedule the visit for the weekend of Dec. 5. He has previously made official visits to Ohio State and Texas. He also has an official visit set to Florida for the weekend of Dec. 12. It is not certain if he will make an official visit to Alabama. James will be heading to the University of Florida this weekend to make his first official visit. He also has official visits scheduled to Notre Dame the weekend of Dec. 5 and Ohio State the weekend of Dec. 12. He has not yet scheduled an official visit to Cincinnati. So he made it to an Ohio State game and a Texas game, but apparently has no plans to catch an Alabama or Florida game if he makes an official visit. If he keeps his Notre Dame plans, he'll miss USC's last game as well.

2010 Five-star RB verbals to Auburn

Nope, not Lache. Michael Dyer of Arkansas, #17 in the Rivals 100, verbals to Auburn. Talk amongst yourselves. I'll give you a topic: what's the impact of this on Lache's decision, and if he were to warm back up to UT like Cobbs did, would the coaches (or you, the fan) want him?

Lombardi Award Semis

6

Of course, no Sergio. And no Muckelroy either. I can understand those, because Sergio's numerous QB pressures and QB hits aren't as visible as his lack of actual sacks, and Muck's a middle linebacker, so he's less likely to get Lombardi attention than Butkus attention. The one that gets me is Sam Acho. If anyone on the Texas line deserved to be a semifinalist, I'd say it's Acho. Even just his stats should make him a no-brainer: 18 tackles (14 solo) 7 TFL for 42yds. lost 5.0 sacks 2 pass breakups 5 QB pressures 4, yes, FOUR fumble recoveries So...snub or not?

Memphis wants into the BCS conferences

10

It's probably not super-interesting to those focused just on UT football, but Memphis has hired former Big East commish Tranghese to help them get into a BCS conference. While it's doubtful they're going to get into the SEC or Big Ten, the two most likely conferences would seem to be the Big East by a very wide margin, and the Big 12 (very improbable). If the Big East were to expand, who would be likely additional members? I'm thinking Memphis makes sense, but there are other candidates if the conference wanted to get to twelve: Southern Miss East Carolina Troy UCF Memphis, plus any three of those four, would make for a solid alignment, although the Big East would still remain the weakest of the BCS conferences.

Delicate Demarco injured again

34

The walking candy cane suffers his 4535th injury since arriving on campus; this time, it's not serious. Oddly enough, tiny, temporary injuries are part of OU's plan to keep Murray healthy enough to play; the more time he misses for minor injuries, the less exposure Mr. Glass has to major ones.

Athlon: OU's WRs/TEs > UT's WRs/TEs

6

First of all, this isn't just about OU and UT. I definitely think KU's WR/TE set deserves mention above UT's at this point. But OU's? Athlon seems to think so in their listing of the nation's top five WR/TE corps for 2009: If there is one position where Oklahoma can afford to reload, it’s at receiver. Despite the departures of Manuel Johnson, Juaquin Iglesias and Quentin Chaney, the Sooners have the top receiving group in the Big 12.
