Pat Burrell appreciation
Wow. Pat is basically playing for free to be on his beloved Giants. He's my new favorite position player, and is an example of team loyalty, and pride. He's everything Uribe is not. He's a Giant, and I really hope he reaches every single incentive that is in his new contract. Thanks for being a Giant, Pat.
Mark Reynolds and the "dingerz gland"
So watching Reynolds hit that moon shot off of Tim the other night really got me thinking of how much I miss watching BLB hit those majestic dingerz, and how, since his departure they have pretty much not come that often from the Giants. I mean just look at our division, you've got Reynolds and Upton, Ethier and Kemp, Tulow and Stewart, Gonzalez and Eckst..., or maybe Blanks, and then good ol' Uribe and ....Torres? That Reynolds shot was freakin crushed and my malnurished dingerz gland is jonesing for some of that power in S.F.'s lineup again. Just one guy on the roster with 30+ HR power would be nice, just one. Feliz teased, Panda is not that guy, and he shouldn't be, but if allowed to develope properly maybe Johnny Bowker could at least flirt with 30 in the MLB. The guy has a dingerz gland but for whatever reasons other than bullshit streaks of Velez, Torres, and Nate, Bowker's power has been cast aside, to never develope; and that is all this lineup needs to win. Since Bonds' and baseball's "post steroids" era, you don't see shots like Reynolds hit the other night too often. Trying to think of players who can mash like that, with no stats, or avg. footage per HR to back me up, the first guy that popped in my head was free agent to be Jason Werth. Werth can hit the long ball with the best of em. I'm not saying "Get er done Sabes" or anything like that, because unless Dayton Moore or Ed Wade took Rowand and or Zito's contracts at face value, there's just no room on the payroll. I understand that and fully expect Werth in pinstripes come April 11'. But, my dingerz gland would love to see him in the Orange & Black.
Wellemeyer? Posey?
What's up with the Giants being in the lead to land Wellemeyer? And what's up with Posey playing the IF? MLBTR is reporting both as possibilities, anyone heard anything more about Posey shifting to the IF? 2B would be interesting. And shit, I'd rather see MadBum than Wellemeyer, but meh.
Adam Miller
"Miller, meanwhile, did not pitch last season as he underwent surgery on his right long finger for the third time." Anyone seen this case before?
Reds need to unload
MLBTR is repoting that the Reds may need to significantly cut payroll and that if a team were willing to take on a bad contract ($12.5M A. Harang) they may be willing to move Votto to open a spot for Alonso. Votto may be the best up and coming 1B and had some anxiety DL issues, what would it take to get it done? Sanchez + Ishi or Garko + Romo? Or would it take Madnum, which I'd be perfectly OK with for Votto.
It's on now..
Now that the Sabean/Bochey signings are really for real, it's a pretty safe bet that Freddy Sanchez and Juan Uribe will be back, leaving very little chance for offensive upgrades in the infield. Our only hope is in LF or RF, and it doesn't sound like Holliday's a realistic option for LF. So, barring any big trades, or payroll increases, here's my best shot at a Sabean roster for 2010: LF Velez/Torres 2B Freddy Sanchez RF Bobby Abreu 1B Pablo Sandoval 3B Juan Uribe CF Aaron Rowand C John Buck (or any cheap dueche) SS Edgar Renteria Bench: C- Eli Whiteside RF Nate Schierholtz CF Andres Torres 1B Travis Ishikawa utility guy Ryan Rohlinger (or Jamey Carroll) Joey Martinez 5th starter.
Would you..?
I'm not trying to suggest that Sabes and Bork are even contemplating this, but would you trade Dirty, Guzman, and FLew to KC for Alex Gordon? Seems like a pretty decent deal for both clubs, as all involved are under team control for a bit and still cheap. The Royals need OF, DH, and SP help. Seems like a lot to give up, but FLew and Guzman will never be used here anyway. It just seems like Dirty's gotta be the one to get traded this offseason, and there aren't too many good corner IF's that are young and under team control that I could see being moved. Not that KC's looking to move Gordon, but for the right package maybe?
Leadoff
What do you guys think about going after guys like Drew Stubbs, or Ryan Raburn for next year? Both can play anywhere in the OF, and both can hit leadoff, something the Giants really need (besides power). I really like Stubbs and the Reds seem to have a logjam in the OF. Just wondering.
Options
Hey, just wondering if where you can find what players have options remaining, and what players are out of them? I know FLew is out of options, but what about Franny? Are they gone next year?
Roster question
I was wondering if a non-roster spring training invitee makes the club, and signs a new contract, can they be sent down to the minors at some point or to they have to just be DFA'd?
Jesus Guzman
Does anyone know if the Jesus Guzman signing was ever announced/confirmed by the Giants? I was hoping this one was real, as this kid's got upside for cheap.
