Camp Battles to Watch. Part Two, O-Line

Let's take up the up the Tackle spots.

Primary battle is going to be at Left Tackle. The most concerning in the eyes of most Saints fans, and probably of some concern to Drew also.

So we have the ever hurt Charles Brown

Someone the team drafted in 2010, 2nd round, pick 64. Hopes were high for the Southern Cal player. After being abused when thrown into the fire, in the Rams upset win of 2010, Brown also went out the game injured. In three years with the Saints, Charles has played in 21 games, and ended last season on IR. And that was at right Tackle, so at best I see Charles as backup for Strief. Can he both step up, and make the switch to LT, well I guess we'll find out.

Marcel Jones

was taken in the 7th round, pick 234, of the 2012 Draft. Marcel has never played in a Regular season game, much less postseason, and as with many of our Tackles last year was placed on IR.

Enter Terron Armstead

Terron comes to us with the 13th pick in round 3 of the 2013 draft. He played at Arkansas-Pine Bluff, the same hometown as our own HOFer Willie Roaf.

Over his career for Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Armstead has played in 37 games. He started all 12 games at left tackle in his senior season. Armstead really made a name for himself at the East-West Shrine Game, where he performed extremely well. His play was so promising that he was called to play in the Senior Bowl as an injury replacement for Dallas Thomas.

STRENGTHS
Armstead is a fantastic athlete for the position. He is light on his feet in pass protection, and nimble when on the move. Agile, moves well in space, shows the quickness to get to the second level and cut off linebackers. Has been asked to pull all the way across the line and has shown effectiveness in doing so. Bends and redirects well. Extends his arms to keep pass rushers at bay. Not overwhelmed by defensive twists and stunts. Does a good job of selling play fakes, draws, and screens.
WEAKNESSES
Needs to improve lower body strength. Can get bull rushed back. Faced sub-par competition. Needs to speed up hands, and be more consistent with his aiming point. Gets to the second level quickly, but will struggle to locate his target, gets lost in space. Will lunge at defenders with his head down in the run game.

BOTTOM LINE
Armstead has been a fast riser in the postseason process. He's got an intriguing athletic skill set. Despite facing sub-par competition in season, he's shown the ability to be a good pass protector, and contribute as a run blocker. He can likely stay outside, although some teams might see him as a guard. He could find himself as a Day 2 pick before all is said and done.

This is to me, our most intriguing player. Ready to start at RT, Armstead is probably our best hope for an eventual LT. I hope he can get a little seasoning before he is throw into the fire, this year, but I feel much better knowing he is on the roster.

Then we have Jason Smith

Jason was the 2nd pick of the 1st round, of the 2009 draft, taken by the Rams. His rookie season ended on IR from a bad concussion. He has largely underwhelmed, and was traded to the Jets for the 2012 season. They released him Feb. 19, 2013 and was signed to the Saints 4-13-13.

Smith has played both LT and Rt, so he has that going for him. He also played on poor offensive teams, and this may be his last chance to redeem himself. Should be a good option for depth, at both positions, if nothing else.

Next we have Bryce Harris

Bryce was signed by the Atlanta Falcons in 2012 as an UDFA and placed on the practice squad. Due to the afore mention troubles we had last year with the Tackle position, the Saints poached him from their squad. On November 25, 2012, he made his NFL Debut against the San Francisco 49ers, but was unable to finish the game due getting injured in the first quarter. He was placed on IR with a broken leg, 11-27-12.

and lastly Zach Strief

Zack was a 7th round pick, number 210, in 2006, and served as backup for Jon Stinchcomb for 5 years before becoming the RT starter in 2011. Zack had his own injury problems in 2012, and while probably still the starter this season, it may be time to start grooming his eventual replacement also.

So there you have it Saints Fans. This is the most important Camp Battles for the Offense, I see taking place this year.

Let's take up the up the Tackle spots.

Let's start with Offensive position battles...

We have some interesting ones here.

First we have the battle of the WRs.

My picture of the biggest camp battle will be between Nick Toon, Andy Tanner, and our most recent addition Kenny (rocks the dress) Stills.

Was signed as an UDFA back in 2010 and has spent his time on an off the practice squad, playing musical chairs with Sean Can'tfield. I've always liked Tanner, and this is likely a do or die year for him.

Nick

was drafted in the 4th round in 2012. the 122nd pick spent last year on IR after suffering a foot injury. Yes it needed surgery, but we all know this is a favorite ploy of the organization, to keep players from being poached from the practice squad. Toon has the prototypical, build for todays WRs in the NFL. 6'4" and 218 lbs.

Also has a NFL pedigree.

Parents are Al and Jane Toon ... father starred as wide receiver (and in track, as well) at Wisconsin (1982-84), leaving UW as school's career receiving leader (131 catches, 2,103 yards, 19 TDs) ... father was inducted into UW Hall of Fame in 1995 ... Al Toon was No. 10 pick overall in 1985 NFL Draft and played eight years with N.Y. Jets .

Good route runner, good hands, can adjust to the ball...sounds like a dream receiver for Drew, 6', 194 lbs. Only dig on him is a perceived lack of physicality.In this video against West Virginia, Kenny does a decent job of blocking for the FB. It's a long video, but you'll see the play from about 2:20 to 2:30 on the vid. Might have gotten away with a holding call there.

So that's the WR battles I see of most interest in training camp. What's your take.

I've Drawn the Vikings in Canal Street Chronicles Mock Draft. I Have your First, 1st round pick. Just wanted to get the fan's opinions on teams needs and preferences at the 24th pick. Since WR has been addressed with the Jennings signing, I don't see that as the top need in the 1st round. I can see MLBer, CB, DT, or G, as area of needs.

Anyway, what are your thoughts, as well as the reasoning behind them. I need several options. We are doing at least Two rounds so feel free to share you thoughts on the second round pick also.

It's amazing Peterson, did so well last year. Not just the comeback from surgery, but I see major upgrade at G needed. Image what he could do with more holes to hit.

Hello everyone. I've drawn The Titans in our Canal Street Chronicles, Draft Mock. Just wanted to drop in and let the fans here a chance to voice their opinions. Needs I see, are pass rushers, and O-line help. Wow, a lot like us. I believe that y'all run the 4-3. Any plans to make the switch to 3-4. I'm thinking DE for the first pick. I know Guard is a need as well as TE. I would think that the team tries to address it's CB needs though FA.

Anyway, what are your thoughts, as well as the reasoning behind them. I need several options, because players like Werner, and Ziggy, may be gone already at 11. Fortunately the draft is pretty deep here. There are some good G and OT, candidates that will be there in the second. Since we are planning on doing at least two rounds, give me some input there too.

In the

1st. I'm tore up here...I still like Jonathan Jenkins, DT, Georgia, but 15th is probably to high for him. Still this is a position of need, and would take if we manage to trade down and get a 2nd round pick, or even a late 1st. Baring that I'll go with Ezekiel “Ziggy” Ansah (pronounced Ahn-saw), and I'd use him as an OLB, but he can play DE.

3rd. I'd go with either Tharold Simon*, CB or D.J. Swearinger, S.

I originally had Swearinger too late in my first mock, now I'm not sure he'll still be there when we get there in the 3rd.

4th.Jordan Mills, OT, Louisiana Tech .

No change here. That's who I had in my first mock.

5th. Lavar Edwards, DE Sticking with my gut here.

6th. Justice Cunningham, TE

Not the best receiving option here at the 6th round but a great blocker. Something we will probably need with either a Rookie Left OT, and even if we manage to somehow sign Bushrod, he could still use the help.

1.Damontre Moore*, DE/OLB, Texas A&M

Height: 6-4. Weight: 250.
Projected 40 Time: 4.70.
Projected Round (2013): Top-10 Pick.

2/1/13: The 20-year old junior was one of the most consistent pass-rushers in college football in 2012, amassing 12.5 sacks - one of the larger totals in the country. Perhaps even more impressive than that, Moore led his team with 85 tackles - four more than the next closest defender. He had 21 tackles for a loss, two passes broken up, a blocked kick and a forced fumble, too.

2. Bjoern Werner*, DE, Florida State

Height: 6-4. Weight: 255.
Projected 40 Time: 4.74.
Projected Round (2013): Top-10 Pick.

Werner amassed 42 tackles, 13 sacks, 18 tackles for a loss, seven passes batted and a forced fumble entering his bowl game this year.

3. Ezekiel Ansah, DE, BYU

Height: 6-5. Weight: 274. Arm: 34 5/8. Hand: 10.
Projected 40 Time: 4.69.
Projected Round (2013): Top-20 Pick.

Ansah can beat offensive tackles with speed or power. Once he develops more pass-rushing moves and the ability to use his hands in combination with his feet, he could be deadly. The senior totaled 62 tackles, 13 tackles for a loss, 4.5 sacks, nine passes broken up, a forced fumble and an interception in 2012. He has exploded on the scene after making a grand total of 10 tackles as a junior and sophomore.

4. Jarvis Jones*, OLB, Georgia

Height: 6-2. Weight: 242.
Projected 40 Time: 4.58.
Projected Round (2013): Top-20 Pick.

If you like Von Miller, then you'll like Jarvis Jones. They have similar styles of play as elite edge-rushers who also are strong pursuit run-defense linebackers. Jones had 85 tackles, 14.5 sacks, 24.5 tackles for a loss, seven forced fumbles, three passes broken up and one interception in 2012. He finished the year strong with two sacks against Nebraska and announced he will skip his final collegiate season to enter the 2013 NFL Draft.

This one is also Jeff l.b. approved

5. Barkevious Mingo*, DE/OLB, LSU

Height: 6-5. Weight: 240.
Projected 40 Time: 4.60.
Projected Round (2013): Top-20 Pick.

2/1/13: Mingo had a disappointing season which has proven that he should be a 3-4 outside linebacker in the NFL. The junior is very undersized and not strong enough to be a 4-3 end.

6. Dion Jordan, DE/OLB, Oregon

Height: 6-7. Weight: 243.
Projected 40 Time: 4.70.
Projected Round (2013): 1-2.

A popular Mock Pick by the @experts@

2/1/13: Jordan notched 44 tackles, 10.5 tackles for a loss, three forced fumbles and five sacks this season. His pass-rush opportunities were hurt because the Ducks often dropped him back into pass coverage. Jordan plays well in space and would definitely fit best as a 3-4 outside linebacker in the NFL.

7. Alex Okafor, DE, Texas

Height: 6-4. Weight: 261. Arm: 33 1/8. Hand: 9.
Projected 40 Time: 4.73.
Projected Round (2013): 1-2.

2/1/13: Okafor had a good senior season and was a consistent pass-rusher. His job got harder after Jackson Jeffcoat went out for the season with a torn pectoral, but Okafor remained productive. The senior totaled 54 tackles, 12.5 sacks, 16.5 tackles for a loss, four forced fumbles, a blocked kick and a pass batted in 2012.

8. Sam Montgomery*, DE/OLB, LSU

Height: 6-5. Weight: 260.
Projected 40 Time: 4.61.
Projected Round (2013): 1-2.

The redshirt junior was more disruptive than his totals indicate. He recorded 37 tackles, 13 tackles for a loss, and eight sacks in 2012. There is talk that he has a poor work ethic.

My concerns...his work ethic.

9. Corey Lemonier*, DE/OLB, Auburn

Height: 6-4. Weight: 246.
Projected 40 Time: 4.60.
Projected Round (2013): 2-3.

We can do just as good later in the draft.

10. Chase Thomas, OLB, Stanford

Height: 6-3. Weight: 245. Arm: 31 1/8. Hand: 9 1/2.
Projected 40 Time: 4.68.
Projected Round (2013): 2-3.

2/1/13: Thomas ended the year with 71 tackles, 14.5 tackles for a loss, one interception and 7.5 sacks for Stanford. His sack against USC came at a critical time to help seal the Cardinal's upset win. He played really well against Notre Dame even though the stat sheet didn't reflect it.

Good prospect for a 3rd round pick if he falls that far.

11. Tank Carradine, DE, Florida State

Height: 6-5. Weight: 265.
Projected 40 Time: 4.75.
Projected Round (2013): 2-3.

Not feeling it.

12. Brandon Jenkins, DE/OLB, Florida State

Height: 6-3. Weight: 260.
Projected 40 Time: 4.67.
Projected Round (2013): 2-4.

2/1/13: Jenkins went out for the year with a broken foot in the first week of the season. He would have been better off taking a medical redshirt and returning for his senior season, but he has decided to enter the 2013 NFL Draft instead. Jenkins is more likely to have a big freefall than crack the first round. He had one sack and three tackles against Murray State before the injury.

13. Trevardo Williams, OLB, Connecticut

Height: 6-1. Weight: 235. Arm: 32. Hand: 9 1/4.
Projected 40 Time: 4.68.
Projected Round (2013): 2-4.

14. Jamie Collins, OLB, Southern Miss

Height: 6-3. Weight: 245. Arm: 33 3/8. Hand 9 7/8
Projected 40 Time: 4.70.
Projected Round (2013): 2-4.

Collins is an interesting prospect who could either be a 3-4 outside linebacker or as a 4-3 linebacker. An injury knocked him out of the Senior Bowl.

15. Travis Long, OLB, Washington State

Height: 6-3. Weight: 256.
Projected 40 Time: 4.79.
Projected Round (2013): 4-6.

16. Michael Buchanan, DE/OLB, Illinois

Height: 6-5. Weight: 252. Arm: 33 1/4. Hand: 9 7/8.
Projected 40 Time: 4.70.
Projected Round (2013): 3-5.

Doesn't do anything for me.

17. Stansly Maponga*, DE/OLB, TCU

Height: 6-2. Weight: 265.
Projected 40 Time: 4.75.
Projected Round (2013): 4-5.

2/1/13: Maponga totaled 26 tackles, four sacks and two forced fumbles this year. He had a disappointing season and needs to develop some pass-rushing moves. Maponga made a mistake entering the 2013 NFL Draft.

18. Wes Horton, DE, USC

Height: 6-5. Weight: 260.
Projected 40 Time: 4.73.
Projected Round (2013): 4-5.

2/1/13: Horton recorded 33 tackles, 6.5 tackles for a loss, two pass breakups and 5.5 sacks in 2012. He missed the opener versus Hawaii. Horton played better in the second half of the year, but wasn't the breakout pass-rushing force who many expected. He had a solid week at the East-West Shrine.

We should address this need before we go any further down the list.

He has exploded on the scene after making a grand total of 10 tackles as a junior and sophomore.

If you like Von Miller, then you'll like Jarvis Jones. They have similar styles of play as elite edge-rushers who also are strong pursuit run-defense linebackers. Jones had 85 tackles, 14.5 sacks, 24.5 tackles for a loss, seven forced fumbles, three passes broken up and one interception in 2012. He finished the year strong with two sacks against Nebraska and announced he will skip his final collegiate season to enter the 2013 NFL Draft.

Good prospect for a 3rd round pick if he falls that far.

Moore was moved to defensive end before this season, and he took to the position quickly. Moore has demonstrated ability as a pass-rushing terror, and his speed around the edge is a big mismatch against offensive tackles.

Moore size would probably make him a good option at OLB in the 3-4 also.

Three Block kicks...can you say special teams...maybe he'll drop far enough to consider. You never know.

Projected 40 Time: 4.45.
Projected Round (2013): Top 10.

1/31/13: Milliner's stock has been on the rise in January after a strong showing against the Fighting Irish to close out the season. Plus, he is clearly the top corner in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Milliner is fast and agile to be able to play on an island in man coverage. His shutdown ability is unique as he is fast enough to turn and run with receivers, but also has the size to defend big receivers. Milliner has great length and quarterbacks struggle to get passes by him.

Sounds like just what we need, unfortunately too many teams ahead of us will covet him also.

2. Johnthan Banks, CB, Mississippi State

Height: 6-2. Weight: 185.
Projected 40 Time: 4.44.
Projected Round (2013): 1.

Knee injury concerns here, but still projected as the #2. Like the height with this guy, but a little light IMHO.
