Bolts From The Blue FanPost: San Diego Chargers Options at Left Guard

With the retirement of pro bowler and fan favorite Kris Dielman, there is now a hole at the left guard position.

Who is up to fill his space on the o-line? Lets discuss after the jump.

"In 2010, the Seahawks moved down 20 spots in the second round and gave up a 2011 third-round pick in order to finagle quarterback Charlie Whitehurst from the Chargers.

Two years and $8 million later, Whitehurst is back in San Diego."

The lonely clipboard finally has its best friend back.

"sdutChargers Just talked to Chargers C Nick Hardwick. As expected, he's going 2 continue playing...Indications are that LG Kris Dielman will return too."

According to the Silver Fox.
Good to hear, Hardwick seems like a guy who would love to stay with the Bolts and doesn't need to brake the bank on his new contract, which is good news, but you never know.

Hopefully if Dielman returns he will be in good heath and be the same player he has always been. Lets just hope he doesn't make a decision he regrets later in life for the sake of him and his family.

Sad news, thoughts, prayers (however you please) to his family.

Tragic, awful news.

After the Jets game Dielman suffered a Gran Mal Seizure. Will miss at least two games. Some really scary stuff but reports are that he will be ok. Get well Diel!

"...Love Mathews. Comparing anyone to A Peterson isn't fair, but he is that kind of RB. Total package. Not sure exactly what to make of SD overall. In one way, they usually start very slow...and while they haven't looked great-they are 4-1! And Gates has yet to be much of a factor. But, Rivers hasn't looked like Rivers. I still think they are clearly the class of the AFC West-and I don't worry about Rivers."

It's good to finally see RM living up to his hype and getting some credit, he seems to only be growing into a better player each week.

According to profootball weekly the Bolts may franchise Jackson next year. If they do I really hope they sign him to a long turn, It could really get ugly in the Jackson camp, in my opinion.

"It was a direct slap in the face," said Spikes, who had a terrific debut in San Diego with a game-high 11 tackles. "You don't come in our house saying that hey I'm going to get over 200 yards and guarantee a W. That is a disrespect to us. We put in a lot of time in this game; respect every guy in this locker room as a player. I find it hard to believe and you are going to say all that and your success is predicated off the guys up front and with us knowing that. I know our guys up front -- those dogs hunt. … It was personal, absolutely personal."

Got to love having a guy like Spikes on D.

Captains: Rivers, Harwick ... Spike, Weddle ... Hester.
-Acee

No real surprises but good to know. Guessing Hester is the ST captain if anyone was confused.

Amazing story about OG finding out his half brother plays for the Niners. Worth the read.

"Sproles said the only thing he misses about Southern California is the weather, "and that’s it." He also said the Saints "work a little bit harder" in training camp than he remembers in San Diego."

This leaves a sour taste in my mouth. Thanks for throwing a team that loved you and wished you the best (also paid you like one of the top running backs last two years when you weren't) under the bus. Stay classy Sproles.

Definitely don't agree with everything (especially about the right side of the offensive line) but it's a good read with some nice insight. Worth the read.

Both the Chargers and Jets are pursuing pass rusher Antwan Barnes. Damn I hate those Jets...

Excellent breakdown of Garay and how much of an impact he had last year when he was on the field and an argument that he was underused.

Hey guys, I'm a Chargers fan but thought you could appreciate this.

Interesting interview of Chargers first round draft pick Corey Liuget, he talks about Training with star Bronco player Elvis Dumervil and second round pick Orlando Franklin.

He says Dumervil is like a big brother and is teaching him how to be a pro.

Who says we can't all get along?

The Chargers are at least thinking, or "monitoring," the possibility of going after wideout Steve Smith of the Panthers.

If he is willing to redo his contract and could be had for a third rounder or less I say go for it.

Great insight by Brian Billick and a pretty good breakdown by nfl network.

"Scheduled to speak at a conference in Phoenix, Philip Rivers’ flight plans were nixed. So he got in his car and made a 700-mile round trip to give a 20-minute talk."

Next time someone tells you what a jerk Rivers is, have them read this story.

According to Kevin Acee the San Diego Chargers have had long term contract talks with running back Mike Tolbert. Tolbert would still be a restricted free agent next year barring a change in the new CBA but locking up Tolbert now can be beneficial to both the team and Tolbert.

The Chargers brought back Brandon Lang and Darry Beckwith to the practice squad.

Good to see that Lang didn't get picked up by another team.

Bolts From The Blue 53 Man Roster Projection

QB: 2 Spots

-Philip Rivers

-Billy Volek

Note: I see Crompton landing on the practice squad.

RB: 2 Spots

-Ryan Mathews

-Darren Sproles

Note: None of the three (Mcneal, Brinkley or Mason) have showed enough to make the team. With Tolberts, and Hesters to a lesser extent, versatility the Chargers could opt to only carrie two true running backs.

FB: 2 Spots

-Mike Tolbert

-Jacob Hester

WR: 5 Spots

-Malcom Floyd

-Legedu Naanee

-Buster Davis

-Seyi Ajirotutu

-Jeremy Williams

Note: Reed hasn't shown enough and I see the Chargers going with youth. If they opt to keep Reed I see Seyi making the team and Williams going to the practice squad.

TE: 3 spots

-Antonio Gates

-Kris Wilson

-Randy McMichael

OL: 7 Spots

-Brandon Dombrowski

-Kris Dielman

-Nick Hardwick

-Louis Vasquez

-Jeromey Clary

-Scott Mruczkowski

-Tyronne Green

Note: I could see the Chargers adding somebody else to the O-line.

CB: 5 Spots

-Quentin Jammer

-Antoine Cason

-Donald Strickland

-Nathan Vasher

-Traye Simmons

Noe: Wouldn't be shocked if Vasher or Simmons don''t make the team.

Safety: 5 Spots

-Eric Weddle

-Steve Gregory

-Darrell Stuckey

-Paul Oliver

-C.J. Spillman

Note: Spillmans hitting and special teams prowess and hitting help him make the team.

ILB: 5 Spots

-Stephen Cooper

-Kevin Burnett

-Brandon Siler

-James Holt

-Darry Beckwith

OLB: 6 Spots

-Shawne Merriman (ugh)

-Shaun Philips

Bolts From The Blue Defensive Line: Who will stay and who will go

The undisputed toughest battle this training camp has been between the defensive line. There are 10 men to fill 7 spots. What I will attempt to do is go through each player and give my opinion on who will or will not make the team. Let me know if you agree/disagree.

Lets get the locks out of the way:

-Luis Castillo. Like him or not he is the most consistent member of the D-Line and although he has had his fair share of injuries, he isn't going anywhere. Chances of making the team: All but guaranteed

-Cam Thomas. The Chargers aren't going to release a 5th round pick who has shown a ton of potential in just his first season, something major and/or unexpected would have to happen for him not to make the team. Chances of making the team: Almost 100%

Now I'll list the men who will most likely make the team:

-Antonio Garay. Has a ton of potential but has had a lot of injuries in his career, has looked like a beast so far and will most likely be the opening day starter at DT. Chances of making the team: Only will be cut if he gets severely injured

-Vaughn Martin. Still raw but the team believes he has all the tools and the work ethic to be special down the line. Chances of making the team: Will only get cut if the team loses faith in him

Players on the Bubble:

-Jacques Cesaire. Scrappy player who is better as a role player than as a starter but can play all over the line and is currently listed as a starter, although I along with others think Boone would be better suited opposite Castillo. Chances of making the team: Likely, but I wouldn't be shocked if the team choose to move on with younger players.

-Alfonso Boone. When he first joined the team he didn't look like anything special but as the season moved on he picked up the system and he showed why the Chargers picked him up. Led the D-Line in sacks last year and is an all around solid player. Chances of making the team: I would be surprised if he were to be cut, hes a good football player.

-Travis Johnson. Was a solid player last year but has never really lived up to his potential as a first round pick. Chances of making the team: about 50-50

-Ogemdi Nwagbuo. What a fun name to say. Nwagbuo isn't quite the space eater the Chargers covet but he plays with good pad level and has a nice pass rush for a DE/DT. Chances of making the team: about 50-50, it's either him or Johnson

Players with an uphill battle:

-Ryon Bingham. Missed last year but is a tough and versatile player. He's a good guy but I just think the numbers are against him. Really hope he can catch on somewhere else. Chances of making the team: Unlikely, only if there are some major injuries in front of him.

-Derrick Jones. Honestly I don't know that much about him, his best bet is to make the practice squad. Chances of making the team: Will make the practice Squad if he's lucky.

In the end I believe Bingham, Jones and Johnson will not make the team.

Bolts From The Blue Favorite/Least Favorite Current Charger?

Just wanted to hear who your favorite current Charger player is and your least likely, if you want.

I love Rivers but I'm going to choose somebody else just because that is too easy.

My favorite player:

Nick Hardwick. Yeah hes had injury concerns but I just love the way this guy approaches the game. Hes not the biggest center but he uses his college wrestling skills to dominate the man in front of him. Also, if you have ever heard him in an interview he seems like an extremely cool guy, just like a normal person who happens to play football. He seems like the type of guy I would love to go to a bar and have a beer with.

My least favorite:

I could really only think of one player I dont like, and I would rather not mention him.

Anyways, I know this is pretty pointless but I just figured it was something to help pass the time until pre-season.
