ESPN - Rumors: Boldin or James to Kansas City now

(ESPN Insider membership needed - I don't have it) - but ESPN is now on the rumor bandwagon that has Boldin possibly coming to the Chiefs. Someone who has Insider access should summarize what's being said.

PFT - "The Kansas City Chiefs added unrestricted free agent tight end Tony Curtis, the team announced today.

With the Dallas Cowboys, Curtis caught 11 passes for 80 yards and three touchdowns and also played on special teams.

Terms were not released.

Curtis used to play in the since-defunct NFL Europa for the Cologne Centurions.

Also, center Rudy Niswanger signed his restricted free agent tender.

Niswanger was assigned a $1.545 million second-round tender."

Updated: Chiefs to draft Sanchez?

With all the talk/speculation that the Chiefs could trade down in the draft (picking up some draft slots in the 1st/2nd rounds), one option that I haven't seen tossed around it the Chiefs actually drafting Sanchez with the #3 pick - then making a trade.

If its true that there are 3-4 teams in the hunt for the second quarterback on the board (assuming Detroit takes a QB) then the Chiefs are going to be fielding calls with various teams looking to move up to draft Sanchez.

This whole post and strategy is based on the idea that Seattle wants a QB.

Seattle knows the Chiefs don't need a QB - and they know that Aaron Curry/Eugene Monroe/Whoever are at the top of our list. They also know that those players (that the Chiefs want) may not be available anymore if the Chiefs trade down to 7 or 8 spot (I'm basing this off the Raiders/Jags being the next teams that may even THINK about drafting a QB). With this in mind, Seattle may not worry about us finding a trade partner - and therefore will have no motivation to move down one spot.

However, if the Chiefs actually draft Sanchez, Seattle will be forced to draft our pick (Aaron Curry?) AND give up a pick (or two) - in order to trade for Sanchez. Again - this is all dependant on Seattle wanting Sanchez.

Hope my rationale wasn't too confusing. The essence is - assuming Seattle wants Sanchez badly, we could force them to give up a pick for him by taking him off the board - and we lose nothing b/c Seattle drafts our top choice for us.

Thoughts?

"A conversation with his agent earlier today clearly communicated and confirmed to us that Jay no longer has any desire to play for the Denver Broncos.

Update II: Chiefs to trade Cassel?

I know, I know...but hear me out.

(1) The Chiefs have NOT approached Cassel regarding a multi-year contract (according to Cassel's agent)

(2) ~~Brodie Croyle~~ Tyler Thigpen is arguably ready to be our starter

(3) Many have called Cassel a "system" QB who thrived only because of what he had in New England (if this is true, Pioli would be the first to understand/acknowledge it)

(4) The QB situation around the league has increased the value for proven QB's (see Broncos/Cutler situation)

(5) More and more questions are being raised about Stafford and Sanchez.

So - what if Pioli has set up the Chiefs to gain big-time through a blockbuster trade - essentially grabbing Cassel (for a second rounder) when the market was cold , hanging onto him until the market was hot, only to trade him to a likely suitor for a 1st and 2nd, or maybe a QB (Cutler?) and a second (throwing LJ in as compensation?).

I just get the feeling that Cassel might be part one of a ridiculous two part move by Pioli. The most important reason behind this is the lack of negotiation between the Chiefs and Cassel on a multi-year contract. Essentially - the Chiefs are on the hook for Cassel's ~$14 million salary. They could soften this by giving him a long term contract, thereby renegotiating the first year salary. The only argument against doing this is they feel he'll do poorly this season, thereby putting managment in a better bargaining position. You really think they're betting against themselves?

So - second poll of the day from me -

UPDATE II: First of all - I just realized, about 8 hours after I originally posted this, that I placed Croyle's name in the argument above instead of Thigpen. I don't know what the heck I was thinking - and now I realize why there were so many negative comments. Tyler Thigpen is who I meant - I can't explain how I even allowed Croyle into my mind. Second - I'm less of an idiot as time goes on....hahahahaha.

KC to trade first round pick?

Charlie Casserly on the NFL Network just stated the Chiefs are the most likely to trade down on draft day assuming Curry's on the board when KC's third pick comes up. He suggests Seattle (#4) may be the likely trade partner....and that KC could regain it's second round pick this way.

Based off conventional wisdom, that would mean that the Chiefs would pick up Eugene Monroe (OT) with the 4th pick and then have the 37th pick overall (we traded away the 34th pick overall for Cassel).

I think trading down one position in the first round to pick up a second rounder would be a phenomenal trade. It seems lop-sided, however, so I wouldn't be surprised to see something like Larry Johnson being thrown in as compensation (minimal value ot chiefs, fairly valuable to the Seahawks).

Regardless - if Aaron Curry is on the board with the 3rd pick, I'm starting to think more and more that other teams will be knocking on our door to trade up. He's widely considered to be the best player (overall) in the draft, so he garners a lot of attention.
