Westy to have surgery on ankle

Philadelphia Eagles running back Brian Westbrook will have surgery to clean up some bone spurs in his right ankle, according to his agent Todd France.

France had no timetable for Westbrook's return but characterized the procedure as minor. Another source, however, said the surgery could sideline Westbrook well into training camp. Eagles veterans report to training camp on July 29.

The All-Pro running back also had surgery on his left knee three months ago.

"We talked about it when he was at the doctor's office and went through the options and decided it was better to clean it up," France told ESPN. "The ankle has been bothering him since last year."

I have to admit, I am pretty pleased with the draft. I do not remember an Eagles draft where we got so many skill position players. Anyway, here are some highlights. I am out of time now, but I will try to get some more, and I am sure others will find some as well.

Eagles made offer to Pace?

Tackle Pace agrees with Bears

On the same day the Chicago Bears added a new quarterback, they got someone to protect him.

The Bears have agreed to a three-year deal, $15 million deal with free agent Orlando Pace, a source told ESPN.com's John Clayton. His first-year payout, according to the source, is $6.1 million.

ESPN's Michael Smith first reported the signing.

Moments after acquiring quarterback Jay Cutler from the Denver Broncos, the Bears reached an agreement to sign former Rams left tackle Pace.

Pace had an offer from the Philadelphia Eagles, but he decided to sign with the Bears on the day Cutler was acquired in a trade from the Broncos.

While he has battled injuries the past few seasons, he is 33. If he can stay healthy, I imagine he would be a serviceable to good tackle. Do you think it would be worth it had the Eagles got him for the same price the Bears paid?

Eagles Sign S Baker To One-Year Deal

The Philadelphia Eagles today announced they have signed safety Rashad Baker to a one-year contract.

A product of Woodrow Wilson High School in Camden, NJ, the 27-year-old Baker joins the Eagles after a two-year stint with the Oakland Raiders. In 2008, Baker recorded 24 tackles and a career-high three interceptions for the Raiders. He joined Oakland late in the 2007 season after playing eight games for the New England Patriots that year.

Of course, you could make the argument that while my cynicism is well meaning, my writing this post is actually just prepetuating the very issue that I am mocking in the first place.

Also, on another topic, 75 words long must a fanpost be. In leiu of a fanpost, I could have created a fanshot if I just had a quote, link, video or photo that I wanted to share with the community.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The New England Patriots must be pretty confident Tom Brady's injured knee will be fine next season.

After putting the franchise tag on Matt Cassel as insurance for their two-time Super Bowl MVP, the Patriots shipped Cassel and linebacker Mike Vrabel to Kansas City on Saturday. The Chiefs gave up shockingly little -- the 34th overall pick in the April draft for both players.

McNabb made it to the only Super Bowl of his 10-year career with T.O. in the 2004 season -- the QB also had his best year in terms of touchdown passes (31) and passer rating (104.7) -- but the drama that came with Owens resulted in his departure from the team and the Eagles' return to a receiver-by-committee approach.

It's not as if Philadelphia hasn't tried to find McNabb a Randy Moss or even a Wes Welker-type of receiver: Reggie Brown, Kevin Curtis and now DeSean Jackson all have been brought in to be breakthrough pass-catching threats. None has emerged, although Jackson isn't far off. The Eagles seem no worse for wear, though.
