The Franchise: The Inside Story of How "Madden NFL" became a Video Game Dynasty

3

great ESPN article on the history of the Madden NFL video game. Also, an interesting Lamar Hunt connection: "Hawkins (creator of EA Sports and Madden NFL) created a "Strat-O-Matic" knockoff and attempted to start a business. His next-door neighbor in La Jolla, Calif., was former AFL president Milt Woodard, which gave Hawkins the opportunity to send a proposal to Kansas City Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt. Hunt wrote back. Beat it, kid." This is a must-read for Madden fans!

Ranking offensive linemen in the AFC West

Everybody respects Clady, but you can't put him at number one without at least putting an asterisk there. After all, he hit a sophomore slump and is still having nightmares about facing Tamba Hali. More laughable is putting my former hawkeye, and current Oakland Raider bust on the list ahead of Brian Waters and Ryan Lilja. I'll boldly say that Brian Waters, old, is better than Robert Gallery, ever! Still, Weigmann ahead of Waters is just unprofessional journalism. Almost makes me think he just pulled names out of hats.

Why the Chiefs will RUN away with the AFC West Title

"There is no room for negotiation at 4-12," defensive end Phillip Daniels told The Washington Post, making reference to the team's record in 2009. "I'm here, [London] Fletcher's here, everybody's here," Daniels added. "He's got to understand that. We need him to come here, be here and show these young guys that the veterans have bought in and that we want to win games." "Albert carries so much weight with him, there's a lot of young guys that look up to him," Williams told the Post. "But you got to be here. ... He's a grown man. With that comes responsibility. I think a lot of people say, 'Hey, you have a responsibility to this team.' There are a lot of other guys here that would like to be home. But obviously not, because there is a responsibility we have to this team." Daniels told the Post that although these minicamps have been voluntary, the Redskins' last-place finish last season dictates that attendance should be mandatory. "It says this is voluntary, but for us, what we went through last season after a 4-12 season, it's mandatory," Daniels said. "He should definitely be here. And it's a shame he's not." I took heat for this last week, but although the situation is different, I feel the exact same thing should be things said about Waters and Vrabel. Whether you believe that they do a good enough job getting it done at home, this still neglects to set an acting example to the team. the chiefs had the same record.

Which positions hold the most value in the 1st round?

+

the draft is over, but I found an interesting analysis of the value of taking different positions in round 1 and 2 to determine the best value for first round picks.

You know it is a good year to be a Raiders fan when….

1
  1. 5) Josh Mc Daniels moves up to draft Tim Tebow before your owner does
  2. 4) none of your coaches got punched
  3. 3) your team waits until the 4th round to draft the fastest receiver in the draft
  4. 2) a qb gets traded to your team, sending JaMarcus Russell to the bench.
  5. and finally, number 1) your team’s draft selections make you repeatedly ask one of two questions-- Did Al die? If not, who tied him up?

"Josh McDaniels is a man who frequently confuses activity with accomplishment, and the 2010 offseason has been no exception. After trading away the last of his offensive playmakers, McDaniels patched up self-created needs by trading down and around like a hyperactive hamster." -Doug Farrar, yahoosports isn't it fun when we can get a laugh at the expense of our divisional opponents? not a huge fan of yahoosports, but saw this.

"I love Sam Bradford, and I hope he’s great, but he probably made somewhere between $40 and $45 million the night before last," said Goodell, speaking to a group of select fans who won a random lottery to ask the commissioner questions. "He has not even hit the field yet and that’s a guaranteed contract. So if Sam Bradford can’t play, what good does that do any other NFL player? As much as I like these young rookies, and I do think they’re terrific, it’s crazy to give someone who hasn’t proven themselves on the NFL field $45 million. "I think over these three days, we will give $600 million in guaranteed money to these rookies that you’re hearing their names. $600 million. And if let’s just say half of them don’t make it and the money is equivalent to this, that’s $300 million out the door. It doesn’t go to veterans, it doesn’t go to owners. It goes to somebody who couldn’t play the game. That’s wasting money." I agree 100%. A rookie salary cap is necessary. without it, they're essentially telling rookies "you earned your money in college. come play for 10 years, or bust out and collect a fat paycheck." Hate to say it, but how many of us wouldn't be tempted to take the check and let ourselves bust out of the league? still getting paid.

teams begin scramble to sign undrafted players

+

Gil Brandt's ranking of the top undrafted players "I've gotta go, guys," he said at the end of the interview. "We're already busy making calls to these guys that haven't been drafted yet." "Teams that waited until after all 255 names were called before evaluating who's left on their draft boards are already behind the eight ball. There will be a mad scramble to sign these rookie free agents. They all are long shots, of course, just to make an NFL roster. But you never know when you will find the next Kurt Warner or Tony Romo."

Husker's Star Suh ticketed with negligent driving

for all of those who thought Pioli was looking to draft Suh, I'm guessing this is going to change some minds... on the other hand, it could drop his value to the point he becomes a steal. i don't know much about him, but i do remember a former chief defensive lineman with drinking problems who appears to have turned things around. what do you think, does this change pioli's mind (if he was, indeed, highly considering drafting Suh)?
