2013 Draft - Raise Eyebrows, or Go with a Safe Pitcher?

In the run up to the 2012 draft, I was all over the place. Like most I assumed that Appel would be # 1 so I thought Twins would choose between Correa, Buxton, Gausman & Zunino. I was hoping the...

Mackey Rips Ryan's "No Scholarships" quote calls Twins "bizarre"

10

Maybe I am seeing things, but it seems Mackey has become more critical of the Twins since they announced they are leaving 1500. Mackey tears into Ryan by pointing out Slama's career and season stats and compares them to the endless Jeff Grey outings and says: "Of the 214 International League pitchers who threw at least 30 innings this season, Slama tallied more strikeouts per nine innings than all of them." Maybe the Twin's are right about Slama, I don't know. But in this case I agree with Mackey that it just seems strange he doesn't get a shot to prove he can't.

E- Town Playoffs: Berrios Dominant in Game 1

+

E-Town kicked off the Rookie Leauge playoffs against the Hated 2nd Seed Danville Braves. Danville's roster average age is 21 while E-town's is 20. On the way to a 4-0 victory, the Twins got a great offensive performance from Adam Walker who went 3-4 with a double and a HR. , Goodrum was 2-5 with an RBI and Buxton was 1-3 with a RBI. 18 Year Old Jose Berrios is the headliner. The kid who was getting high schoolers out in April was the opener starter and he delivered. Berrios pitched 6 innings of 1 hit baseball and finished with 7 Strike Outs. He then gave way to 21 year old Tyler Duffy who went two innings in stellar relief. JT Chargois finished out the 9th and held the shut out. Nice win for the Twins who hope to finish the series out at home tomorrow.

Some Guy From Fan Graphs Reviews a few Twins Prospects at E-Town

+

Mike Newman from Fan Graphs gives a nice snapshot of the atmosphere at E-town and reviews a few Twins Prospects. He talks nice things about Max Kepler and spotlights some lesser known players like Candido Pimentel, Jorge Polanco & DJ Hicks And in cliffhanger like fashion he promises future write ups on Buxton, Goodrum and Harrison

Sickels profiles Jose Berrios

2

John Sickels gives a nice write up on J.O. Berrios with a brief explanation of his pitching arsenal and the success the kid has had so far. He calls him potentially the best pitcher of the 2012 draft class. This is yet another success for whoever is in charge of the Twins Scouting Dept in Puerto Rico Rosario, Vargas and now Berrios are 3 potential young stars to emerge from the Island Mystery Puerto Rican scout - I salute you and hope you get a promotion

Red Wings are a Game Above .500 and 4.5 games out of 1st!

3

Good news as been hard to find this year, so I am sticking with this. Congrats to the new Manager of the Red Wings as the team with an ever changing rotation / roster has climbed to above .500. After a horrid start the jackals of the Rochester NY media piled on and the FO threw the Twins under the bus and forced a ridiculous schedule to accommodate the Yankees. But the team stuck to it and dealt with the adversity of losing pitchers, being saddled with rejects like Luke French and Maloney. They did not pack it in and instead found a grove and worked themselves out of the hole. They probably won't challenge for the playoffs, and its likely they will fall back as they play more games against better teams. Their division is tough with Affiliates of the Yankees, Phillies, Red Sox and Mets. But for now the Manager can take look at the standings and take pride in how he kept the team focused on winning and improving,

Matt Garrioch has Harsh words for the Twins 2012 draft

4

Using the words like: "Failure" "Did Not use Any Strategy" "left a million dollars on the table" He lambasts their draft but does not actually look at the players they took. Pretty Harsh, especially when I like the two Guys Buxton and Berrios. His full text below: "The Twins were left with the second largest total under their allotment but when adding in the 5% that a team could overspend, they left over a million dollars on the table. That number would be close to $900k without the Mazilli signing but 100k is not counted for the players taken after the 10th. Erich Knab and James Marvel would have been good targets to offer that extra money to. The Twins could have drafted and signed a million dollar talent and chose not to. This is a failure in my eyes. They were put in a position to make an impact and did not use any strategy. They took a pile of college arms in a weak year for college arms. I am disappointed. Sorry for the rant, it frustrates me listening to Twins management on the radio about their thoughts, then seeing a plan poorly administered.

Levi Michael

Don't look now, but Levi Michael is starting to hit a little bit. He had a horrible May, but during June he showed improvement and hopefully figured some things out.

Lost: First Baseman / Outfielder, Answers to the name "Chris"

2

He started the year at MN. Then played his ass off at AAA supposedly he got called up to MN a few weeks ago but I haven't seen him. Any momentum he had from his AAA dominance goes out the window as he rots on the bench. If anybody finds this guy please call Rochester NY. They miss him there.

Houston says they already Signed #1 pick

2

The article says its under slot too! This is great news. Hope this gets Terry Ryan to quickly sign Buxton and get him in EST just as quick. No need to wait until July 15th Terry, get it done! But if Correa signed for under slot, this means Ryan will expect Buxton to do the same, and he might not...so...it could be a longer time until we see him in a Twins uniform. Hope not.

Good First day, Annoying Second.

I like the 1st pick. Lots of upside and hopefully he can hit. Seems like most scouts think he will fill out, great defense and good makeup. All signs point to a good pick in a top 5 talent pool...

JJ Hardy Strikes Back

23

Hardy compares his experince with Baltimore vs the Twins. We learn its not just Gardy who preaches "go the other way" its ingrained in the whole organization. Money quote: "My first round of BP with the Twins, I was trying to (pull the ball), and Rod Carew and those guys call me over and say, `That’s not we want. We want line drives the other way,"’ Hardy said. "So that was my approach for the Twins." My concern is will the Twins try this with Willingham?

La Velle Says the Offseason is Over

15

If La Velle is right (and he is often wrong) the Twins only bullpen signing is Matt Capps and the only FA pitching acquisition is Marquis. So they did not address their poor pitching staff and bullpen, but they did get better from the right side of the plate, and did get better defensively. I am pretty disappointed as the FO sold 3 Million tickets last year and if they would have spent 8 - 10 million more they could have had some good bullpen arms and maybe stretched things to get a quality starting pitcher. That would've reduced the sting of losing Cuddy, Kubel and Nathan.

LEN III says goodbye to Cuddy - and Subtly digs at Mauer

15

A decent little blog post with some nuggets on Cuddy as a person behind the scenes. But of course LaVelle repeats his Mauer digs which I have heard him say on the radio about Joe not being a leader, always in the whirlpool instead of lifting weights, hiding in the clubhouse, etc etc etc. Its not just Souhan who seems to blame Joe for everything! Hopefully Mauer proves these folks wrong and gets back on the HOF track!
