As the Draft Spins...

Draft day draws closer and the teams are throwing out their last minute BS. Everyday we are hearing that teams are in a supposed new player or a certain player is climbing. I would say that the Chiefs are one of the teams that are keeping their cards close to their vest. Round and round, where it stops nobdody knows!

This week the Lions are begining negotiations with Stafford's agent Tom Condon to lock him up as number one overall. If that falls throught they have to pick up the phone and call their second option Jason Smith's agent(oh yeah that is Tom Condon as well). Either way this leaves the Rams at number two overall to decide what to do.

The Rams are supposedly interested in Curry now. The St. Louis Post Dispatch says that the Rams considering Curry at #2 on the headline. All the way at the bottom it also says they are interested in Sanchez, Monroe, and Jason Smith. This is an example of how it works. Is this spin for a cotingency play? If the Rams can't get Jason Smith, are they posturing to get out of that 2 spot? It is interesting, the things that are coming out and will contiue to come out.

The Chiefs follow with the third overall pick as we know. In an odd and twisted draft, we seem to be pretty quiet. There is a scenario that would leave Stafford on the board at #3. For all you trade down fans out there, this would be an ideal scenario. You have Stafford and Sanchez on the board at #3. This would actually bring some suitors up to our spot, with the rumors of Seattle's interest in a QB. As the rumors contiue to spin a new idea comes out with this. The hope for a team to get a QB of the future like the Jets, Redskins or as odd to me as it sounds Denver become more of a reality.

It is also out that Denver will be flying out for one last look at Sanchez five days before the draft. NFL.com is reporting that Denver is flying out for one last look at Sanchez. This is also good news to some who think of Denver as a trading partner. I for one can't see it because they are a division rival, but it isn't impossible and If all of the craziness above were to play out, it could very well happen.

In the end this is media foder and most if not all of the GMs have their board and stick with it. I don't see any of the spin changing GMs mind in who they like based on availability. The only people that get really excited when these headlines come out are the media and us fans. This is a fun time during the week leading up to the draft because we don't really know what KC is going to do. In Pioli we trust...at least for now.

Todd McShay and his analysis.

It is officially here. Draft week has started and the rumors are shifting into 5th or even 6th gear. Out of all the "draftniks" out there it seems most people around the league and even on this sight have a lot of respect for McShay and his work that is put into scouting these players. Kiper seems to pick his top players and stick with them. McShay isn't afraid to change who he thinks is the best player and where they may go. This leads into the next question?

Out of all the players in the draft that the Chiefs may be rumored to take, in his eyes there is only one that he says doesn't have a flaw in his game. Does McShay tend to be more accurate and less controversy based than Kiper. I would tend to think so.

He was on Mike and Mike this morning and beginning what seems to be 24/7 draft rounds, and said something that I hadn't heard quite yet. When asked out of the top players, who scared him the most and a team may regret drafting. The answer was something that will certainly cause some debate on this sight. He seems to be the most talked about LT on here and seems to be considered the smartest pick by a large following on here. Eugene Monroe, is the guy that scared him the most.

We know he had injuries in college and that is a slight issue. Something that McShay mentioned was that he has failed a handful of teams medical. He didn't go into detail, but this is interesting because McShay doesn't just throw stuff out for effect. He also metioned that he is compared to D'Brickshaw Ferguson who is more of a finesse player, but bigger. Your left tackle needs to have some finesse for sure, but he needs to have a bit more than that. The thing that stands out is the fact that this guy has failed some medicals before he has even been drafted. If we are going to take a tackle with the third pick, we better hope somehow Smith falls to three. That won't happen because it is likely that he will be drafted by the Rams, that is if the Lions get a deal done with Stafford. If the Lions don't get that deal done, it sounds like they will be working to make a deal with Jason Smith. Either way Smith is going top two, which leaves the supposed next best tackle for us at three.

I know, I know I am a huge Curry fan and hope the Chiefs draft him. If we stick with the McShay theme here, we will. He thinks that if Curry is on the board and the Chiefs somehow pass on him, it will be the first time that he picks up the phone to say they have made the biggest mistake in the draft. According to his analysis, there isn't a flaw in his game. I would agree based on his on the field performance and his lack of injured past.

We can't afford to miss with this pick. If we stay at three, we will take Curry if he is there. If he isn't there, we will be scramlbing to get out of this spot, and that may be near impossible to do if we want to get what the #3 pick is worth.

We have all been debating and that is what makes this fun. We think we know, but we won't know anything until saturday afternoon, and for that matter neither does McShay. In the end, whoever the Chiefs end up taking, I have to trust and let the new regime do their thing and show us what they can do.

A Chiefs State of the Union Address After a Busy Weekend

So far the results have been mixed disgruntled running back Larry Johnson has been on sports talk radio pleading for his release or trade, Tony Gonzalez speculated his Chiefs future publicly at the Pro Bowl and now team leader and perennial Pro Bowler Brian Waters has came public with his desire to be released.

The Importance of the Chiefs Second Draft Pick

From the FanPosts. Nice work. -Chris

With much debate as to who KC should take at number one. I feel the second rounder is just as important. As bad as beloved Chiefs have been, we can't afford to wiff on the first few picks. As "fans" we have been pretty emphatic that we should take Stafford, Curry, or Monroe. I for one have been in Curry's corner but know that we have a lot of needs and he may not be there. I am curious who the number two pick should be. I know it is a bet harder to figure this pick since there will be 33 players off the board, but this is a valuable pick that cold lead to an impact player. What position and who should this pick be used toward?

ajor needs are OL, DL, LB, maybe a WR. I left out QB because I really don't see us taking a QB unless a projected first rounder drops. Even then I doubt it would be one to take with that pick.

OL: HIV 2 Elway has been really high on Alex Mack and Max Unger, and rightfully so.

Alex Mack C-Played for Cal and is projected to go late first round. He is the stud center that could very well start right away and anchor this line. The problem will be the Colts are in need of a center if not this year then the next. I have a hard time seeing them passing on this guy.

Max Unger C/G/T-Played for Oregon and is projected as a mid to high second rounder. He is said to be able to play any position on the line, but his best position is guard. Would look good at RG of possibly C. Worst case he could play RT. A lot of talent and played in the Oregon spread.

Eric Wood G/C-Played at Louisville and also projected as a high second rounder. Most likely he would start at guard. At center he would be more like a Casey Weigman. Not bad if we stay with the spread, but if we are going to run much he would be a better guard.

Jermon Meredith OT-Played at South Carolina and is a high second to low first round projection. He would be a nice RT and would fit the need we have at the position. He

Eben Britton OT-Played at the University of Arizona and is a late first round to high second round projection. Played tackle two years and is said to be very good at pass blocking. He is big at 6'6" and 310 lbs. Another possible RT if still there.

LB: This is our thinnest position on the squad no matter what scheme is going to be used.

Brian Cushing LB- Comes from what is being dubbed as linebacker U. We will have to wait and see how this year works out. USC has 4 linebackers at the combine. Most likely he will be gone when it gets to the second round. He is a workout warrior and plays tough on the field. Could play outside in the 4-3 as well as the 3-4. Can cover and play in space.

Michael Johnson LB/DE- Played DE at Georgia Tech and is projected as a late first rounder but could fall to the upper second round. Has a lot of potential but hasn't quite lived up to it. Doesn't have the bulk to play DE but has the speed to be a rush linebacker. Would be a good fit in a 3-4 but not so much a 4-3. Players similar to his build are Jevon Kearse and Jason Taylor. Those are special players and benefit from a good D-line. That is something that Johnson wouldn't have right a way. This might be that "wiff" if taken.

Larry English OLB- Played OLB at Northern Illinois and is projected as a late first round selection. Known for his pass rushing ability and would no doubt be a nice addition to our weak group of linebackers. Has nice size and might be able to play inside or out. I don't think he will be there, but would be hard to pass on if he is.

Clay Mathews OLB- Was a walk on at USC. He has nice size and would be an OLB in either scheme. He had a pretty good combine, but sometimes gets overlooked because he was a walk on and Mauelaga and Cushing are much more visible and frankly better. Would be an awesome special teamer right away but may not start at linebacker. We really need to get a starter with this pick if at all possible.

Conner Barwin DE/LB- Played at Cincinatti at DE and is projected to go early second but that could change to late first with his workout at the combine. As a D lineman he blew up the combine. He is listed at 6'4" 250 and would be converted to LB. His stock rose quite a bit with his combine performance and would most likely be a 3-4 linebacker, but as athletic as he is the 4-3 might work to.

Clint Sintim LB- Played at Virginia which is the only D1 school that runs a base 3-4. He is projected as a mid to early second pick. He is 6'3" and 252. Last season he recorded 11 sacks and would be good for any team that runs the 3-4 scheme. If the Chiefs stay 4-3 he wouldn't be the right pick, but he would be great if they switch to the 3-4.

WR: We desperately need another receiver, but this may not be the time to take one. However there might be that one that can't be passed on.

Darrius Heyward-Bey- Played at Maryland and is projected to be a mid to late first rounder. I could fall to the Chiefs because his college numbers aren't huge by any stretch. He did run the fastest combine 40 of the receivers which will boost some interest. Everyone is always looking for speed.

Hakeem Nicks- Played at UNC and is also projected to be a mid to late first rounder. He may end up being the best receiver in the draft when we look back next year. This kid has great hands and is very physical. He ran a 4.4 forty which helps his stock. I doubt we have a shot at this guy but it is very possible so I had to throw him in the mix.

Kenny Britt- Played at Rutgers and is projected mid to early second. He is big and fast. He had 1252 rec yard and physically can handle the NFL. Might not be a bad pick but could be a wiff as well.

Brian Robiske- Played at Ohio State and is also projected mid to late second. This is one of those players that seems like he has been in college forever. Not flashy but also brings good size and speed. Known for doing everything right. Not the most popular pick but could be the most complete when it comes to route running, quickness, size, and speed.

Patrick Turner- Played at USC and is projected mid to late second. Could sneak into the first round, but probably won't happen. Big at 6'5" and 225 lbs. Caught 10 tds last year and would be a good possession receiver. Not really what the Chiefs need in my opinion.

Chase Coffman TE- Played for Missouri and would be projected as a first rounder if he wasn't injured last season. Depending on if Gonzalez is here or not could impact this decision. Would be the top TE minus the injuries and that alone will keep teams from taking a chance early with him. The Chiefs have other needs and most likely wouldn't take him.

DL: This is by far the worst need on our team. We have serviceable players, but we need some flat out talent. Dorsey still could be good and I think he will be. We either need a NT or a pass rushing DE depending on the scheme we run.

Peria Jerry DT- Played at Ole Miss and is projected to be a late first rounder. He is listed at 6'3' and 313 lbs. He brings both size and ability. Last season he had 6 sacks and 17 tackles for a loss. Would be hard to pass if we are lucky enough for him to be there.

Jarron Gilbert DE- Played at San Jose State and is projected to be a mid second rounder. Gained some popularity via youtube with his leaping out of the pool video. Listed at 6'5" and 280 lbs. he had 22 tackles for a loss last season and is thought to be a perfect DE in the 3-4. With his skills he might good in the 4-3 as well.

Tyson Jackson DE- Played at LSU and is projected to go mid to late second round. Listed at 6'4" and 298 lbs. he would fill a need at possibly any spot on the line. Another possible DE in the 3-4 and a DT in the 4-3. Has been called an under achiever and could be another Tank Tyler.

Fili Moala DT- Played at USC and is projected mid to late second round. 6'4" and 298 lbs. With some size could be a Salaumua type player. He had 10 tackles for a loss and 4.5 sacks last season. We need someone who is active at DT and this may be him.
