GOG 2009 #38

After a relaxing day off, that probably involved lounging at the pool, taking in a movie, reading a good book, and... um... flying cross-country, the A's find themselves back home for a series...

The Athletics head into Baltimore for one more series before they finally get an off day, their first since July 15. Over the last 25 games, the A's have a 12-13 record, scored 145 runs, and...

The A's showed a lot of life in the last series, taking three out of four and dropping the Rangers to 4.5 games back in the AL West, or 2 games back in the wild card race. This series will not be...

I don't have much time to chat now, but I have to say that this long stretch of consecutive games is getting to me. There's no rest for the GOG writer!

While we're all nervously hitting refresh, in hopes of being the first to hear of the next big trade, the Athletics are probably just exhausted. Today is the 16th game of a 28 game stretch without...

So that went exactly like we planned it right? Get clobbered by the Yankees so that now we can head in to Boston and sweep away the Red Sox playoff dreams?

The Athletics didn't even have time to properly appreciate yesterday's 16 run performance before hopping a cross-country flight out to New York. Let's hope they didn't forget their bats in all the...

The Twins have been slowly creeping up on the Tigers in the AL Central (though they will need to pass the White Sox as well to take that division). The A's have been doing you-know-what in the AL...

I can say without a doubt that this is the highest elevation GOG ever (at least until net access on airplanes becomes more common). Hello from 5000m (17,000 ft) in the Atacama desert! Of course,...

GOG All-Stars

The All-Star Game has come and gone, but now it's time to check in on a contest that we ANers actually care about -- The Guess-the-Outcome Game!! I've been having a great time running the game so...

I'm hiding in the back of my collaboration meeting right now, discretely posting to AN. It's this sort of stuff that has kept me from watching many of the A's games so far this season. But maybe...

The A's head to Detroit for a three game series, looking to continue their dominance over the AL Central. I mean, we're 2-0 against the Central so far… that trend is sure to continue, right?

What's with all these two-game series? Sure, some of them were full length series cut short by weather, but I think that it's all a big conspiracy to make me write more GOG questions and grade more...

The Dumbness of Crowds, part 2 This plot uses data from your submissions to GOG #00. The x-axis gives which place in the AL West we predict Oakland to finish. The y-axis gives our predictions for the number of games Oakland will win (drawn as a histogram, so you can get a rough idea of how many people predicted each win total -- a lot of people thought the A's would be an 89 win team). The thick solid line is a linear regression, with all points weighted equally. Now, the dashed line shows that Oakland is currently on pace to win only 61.4 games so far (based on our May 11 record of 11 wins, 18 losses). According to the linear regression, that means we will finish in 6.65 place! You would think that this might be impossible in the four team AL West, but don't put anything past these 2009 Athletics!
