Don't worry, America, the Miami Heat won't win the NBA title. Texas will take care of it. Again.

"There's a first time for everything. And from the first time I laid eyes on the San Antonio Spurs, I hated them. Everything about them. It was Game 4 of the 2003 Western Conference Finals. I distinctly remember sitting in those nosebleed seats 45 minutes before the game watching Tim Duncan shoot free throws, and directing as much sports-hate as I could his way. It didn't work. The Mavs would lose that game 102-95 and the series, in part due to Dirk's high ankle sprain, but also because the Spurs could do no wrong."

"...if the Spurs want to return a better defensive team next season, and if the Spurs wants to see their best defensive units finishing games, getting stops in the 4th quarter and all, one wonders if the Spurs can use Tony Parker to close games, given the rest of their personnel."

"Well I'm going to urge the owners -- and it's not very radical but we were talking about it for awhile -- to adopt the international rule on basket interference. That is to say, once the ball hits the rim it's in play. Because I think that it's too hard to call. I think that we don't want to stop the game every time to see if it's the right call, but the camera that looks down on the basket can tell the story if the refs have gotten it right. And it's just impossible to call to make whether the ball's touching the rim, on the rim, off the rim or the like. And I think that would make the game faster, better, and less controversial."

Pounding The Rock Spurs battling history as they try to crawl out of 2-1 hole

After Saturday’s loss at Memphis, the Spurs will be some huge historical odds as they attempt to come back from a 2-1 deficit in the best-of-7 series.

In the Spurs’ previous franchise history in best-of-7 series, they’ve been behind 2-1 in 12 previous series. They ended up winning only one of them.

The Spurs’ previous comeback from a 2-1 deficit came in the 2008 Western semifinals when they were behind 2-1 after three games against New Orleans. They came back from that obstacle by winning three of the final four games, including a dramatic Game 7 triumph at New Orleans.

Who knows? Maybe the 13th time will be the charm again for the Spurs.

Here’s a look at the results when the Spurs fell behind 2-1 in previous best-of-7 series in their history.

Year            Playoff series                        Opponent                Result

With the NBA's best team thus far going into their final game against the Chicago Bulls this Thursday before the All-Star break, it is time to take a look at what is ahead for one of the favorites to win the NBA crown this year.

So far, the Spurs have had a dream season, achieving a 46-9 record and sending a forceful reminder to everyone once again that, even though they still are getting up in years, they are not going anywhere.

Here are ten bold predictions concerning the Spurs' rest of the season after the All-Star Break occurs.

Pounding The Rock What does the future hold for the Spurs?..

After the heartbreaking elimination of our beloved team by the Mavericks and Suns for two consecutive seasons, what does the future have for the Spurs? There are simply a lot of unknowns...

Case 1 -The Big Three

The Big Three, Tony Parker, Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobilli has faced tons of ups and downs this past season due to injury and age (Duncan-35, Ginobilli-32), bring along inconsistency and we dug ourselves into a very big hole that we can't climb out of. Sure, all they need is a lot of rest and they will surely get it this offseason, but how about next year?  Can they show promise that they'll be ready for the playoffs, when all the physical and mental fatigue are at its peak? Ginobilli, especially Duncan can't play the minutes like they used to at their prime, we all know that. But without those minutes from them, what can we do?

Case 2 - Richard Jefferson

Inconsistency. That's  one word that comes to my mind whenever  RJ's name is mentioned (actually, the first one would be F%@k!). Richard Jefferson just came out his most disappointing season since his rookie year. I know, the Spurs playbook is complicated, etc. etc...But his athleticism alone could be useful, we have seen that in several games, but most of the time he just stood there like an atheistic child waiting for attention. (Sorry, just bending out frustration) Besides, Antonio McDyess stepped it upped during our short playoff stint, how come RJ didn't, when they came into fold at the same offseason? There are also a lot of unknowns regarding RJ, will he opt out? Will he be a traded? If he stays, what can we actually expect of him?

Case 3 - Tiago Splitter Beims

PRO'S

  • 7'2 wingspan
  • 9'1.5 standing reach
  • excellent long frame
  • nice vertical leap, good quickness and great mobility
  • excellent decision making on defense
  • remarkable lateral quickness, understands defensive angles extremely well and is highly efficient in his movements
  • enjoys excellent timing in pick and roll plays
  • shows good positioning on weak-side defense
  • can produce down low with some simple moves and a nice soft touch (sounds familiar?)

CON'S

  • poor shooting
  • not a shot-blocking type of defender
  • never risks his defensive position for the sake of adding blocks to his stat-line
  • could use some definite polish with his footwork
  • must learn to play with smaller spaces and get used to improvising moves better
  • struggles posting-up more physical defenders
  • not the quickest player getting off his feet
  • not a great intimidator at this moment, especially concerning defending his own matchup
  • tends to stand still with his arms raised and no leaping effort
  • gets outmuscled in the low post by some players
  • rebounding numbers aren't all that impressive for his size

*Taken from various scouting reports

So, that's Tiago Splitter for you. Further, please remember that these stats and evaluation are from the Euroleague, will these translate well in the NBA? In the first place, how much are we sure that he will actually come and play in the NBA? And, will it be for the Spurs?

Case 4 - 2010 Draft

It is stills a month to go before draft day, so for now let's leave it to the FO and the scouts to do their job. We can speculate all we want, but in the end it will still be up to them. You have to remember that the FO likes to surprise fans with their "under the radar" moves, so I'm really not betting the farm on speculations and rumors.

No matter how you break it down the team is a shell of its former self. Sure, they’ll make the Playoffs, maybe even carry through to the second round, but it just won’t be the same. After years of sitting atop the NBA’s caste it looks like it may be time say goodbye. It truly is like that long-term relationship we’ve all been in at least once. When times were good they were good, but it’s falling apart and it’s about time to move on.

The love is gone and the NBA is moving on; it’s safe to say the Spurs time on top is finished, too. It was fun while it lasted. Thanks for the memories.

Pounding The Rock The Signs Point to Manu Going Off

[Cross-posted from SpursTalk:  Original thread here]

Manu Ginobili is known for his fourth quarter and playoff time playmaking. Sure, he's blown some games due to a dumb mistake, he's even blown a series at one point. However, he's also been compared to Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan in the times of clutch. He's the player people use to say they'd take number one for a game winning shot. Then el contusión happened and the battering his body took aged him more than some others. Still, this year he's been pretty healthy... a bit slower, but still the Manu we know. The one thing that's been lacking has been his shot... whether its finishing at the rim or just making a jumpshot, something's been off. Well, just like Manu becomes a beast when someone gives him a hard hit, I think the trade talk and the general lack of respect he's been receiving is about to be the equivalent of a fourth quarter slap in the face.

Here are the signs that Manu is about to go off:

- The Spurs championship goal requires that he do so. Tim can't do it all on his own and Parker's going to be slower for the rest of this season. Manu has to be the other guy.

- Nobody's respecting Obi Wan Ginobili. The refs aren't respecting him, the fans aren't respecting him (trade Manu for Stoudemire???), and the organization isn't respecting him in his mind. He's played the game in an "everybody else comes first" mode since he came in the NBA... maybe he's ready to jettison that approach if it improves his chances of a trophy.

- Contract year: the team hasn't extended his contract like he wanted, and Manu's going to have to earn himself the money on a contract from all the potential teams out there who might want him. Time to end the "he's an aging SG talk."

- He might be a half step slower, but its the shot that is really keeping him from making it. An angry Manu usually finds his shot again. A clutch Manu usually finds his shots again. Both of those are now.

- Tony Parker is down. It might be a bit taboo, but we all really know that Parker and Ginobili generally lack some level of synergy... on the court, off the court, they just don't jive like some others. Manu's going to make this team his own for a bit. If he's leaving San Antone, he's going to make everyone remember what they lost.

- It only takes one game for him to find that rhythm again. Just so happens he's probably going to get more minutes and much greater shooting opportunities for a while. We'll see what happens.

- You talk about trading Manu for somebody else, and you can be guaranteed he's pissed off. Real pissed off.

If all these things together don't kick start Manu into going nuts on the court in the next few games, he's over the hill and on the way down. If the Manu who can't be stopped in the last 5:00 of a 4th quarter is still in there somewhere... then God help the other teams the Spurs are going to play in the next few. Time to find out if Manu can still be Manu.
