If you really wanted to mess me up, you should have gotten to me before Rout 66.

This list is arbitrary and I'm sure many will disagree. I'd love to see ammendments and suggestions, but also stories. Texas losses are like JFK's death. I always know where I was. I'm sure you do to. Also, for the first half of the Mack Brown era, I was in college (read: had a drinking problem, particularly on Saturdays). Any additional details for the late 90's games would be greatly appreciated. I don't live in Austin anymore, and haven't been to a game in years, so any additional info from people that were at games would be greatly appreciated.

I think this is probably a better discussion topic than Top 10 Games of the Mack Brown Era was. That is the nature of Texas fans (Although no video in this one, I wouldn't do that to ya). Okies, Aggies, and others will call it whining, to be sure. I call it a palate that is honed to savor every note of sorrow. So, without further ado, My Desert Island All Time Top 10 Worst Losses of the Mack Brown Era.

10. 1999 NCST 23, Texas 20

In the 10 spot comes North Carolina State. And does DeLoss know us or what? You can actually buy the DVD of this game from Texas Athletics for $50. I mean, who wouldn't want to watch NCST return a blocked punt 35 yards for the game winning TD with only 3:06 remaining?

Why it makes the list: Season opener, still the only one Mack has lost at Texas. We were ranked 17th, coming off of the high of Ricky's game vs A&M, thrashing Mississippi State in the Cotton, Major back for year two, the #1 recruiting class in the nation, and we lose in AUGUST.

9. 1998 Texas Tech 42, Texas 35

At number 9, we have the first Red Raider appearance on the list. Riding high after winning 6 straight, Mack's inaugural team headed into the desert. A shootout ensued. When the dust cleared, Tech's Ricky Williams outrushed our own Ricky 148-141. After Texas tied the game with 2:18 to play, Tech drove 82 yards and scored the winning touchdown with :25 left on a 3 yard Rob Peters run.

Why it makes the list: Winning this game would have set Texas up for a Big 12 South deciding game at home against A&M. After getting drubbed early in the year by KState and UCLA (both Top 10 teams), Texas had won every game since. Also set the precedent for subsequent upset losses at Tech in 2002 and 2008 (more on those games later).

8. 2003 Arkansas 38, Texas 28

Matt f-ing Jones. The future Jags WR torched Texas for 124 on the ground, 139 on the ground in the game that signaled the beginning of the end for Chance Mock. To me, this will always be "The game that Vince didn't play". Any criticism of Mack not playing freshmen starts here for me. Vince's line from the previous week's 66-7 drubbing of New Mexico St. was as follows: 5 car., 61 yds, 2 TD's, 1-1 passing, 60 yds. And he played not a down against Arkansas. The back breaker came in the 4th quarter: on 3rd and 1, from their own 39 Arkansas had a 35-28 lead. Matt Jones breaks a 60 yard run to the Texas 1 yard line, setting up a FG, and effectively ending the Horns' chances.

Why it makes the list: Ranked #6 in the country, Texas looked every bit of it the week before. UNRANKED Arkansas came into DKRTMS and whipped our ass. 3 fumbles by the Horns = 3 turnovers. Mack's list of home losses to unranked teams is a short one: 3 games. Spoiler Alert: All 3 are on this list.

7. 2000 Stanford 27, Texas 24

A week after losing to SAN JOSE ST., Stanford did the unthinkable, beating the Horns 27-24 on a DeRonnie Pitts touchdown reception with 1:12 to play. Chris Lewis, Stanford's backup QB (we knocked their starter out in the 1st Quarter), was 12-33, but threw 3 TD's against 0 INT's for the Cardinal. MBTF doesn't have a recap, but Stanford's site does.

Why it makes the list: I still don't understand this loss. This was a Stoopsing of a night road game if ever there was one. Applewhite struggled and the Texas offense managed only 1 TD through the first 50 minutes of play. This against a defense that had given up 40 points the previous week to San Jose St. As a Top 5 team, during the Mack Brown era, there have been a total of 3 loses to unranked teams: All 3 are on this list.

6. 2002 Texas Tech 42, Texas 38

Texas came into this game ranked 4th in the AP, needing another Oklahoma loss (which would come in Bedlam) after Reggie McNeal went all "only great game of his career" on the Sooners. At the time, Texas was in the thick of the National Title race (although the title was eventually between undefeated Miami and Ohio State). Kliff Kingsbury threw for 473 yards and 6 TD's as Tech pulled the upset. Taurean Henderson scored the go ahead TD with 5:41 to play in the 4th. On the ensuing drive's first play, Chris Simms threw an INT to Ryan Aycock. Tech then proceeded to run off the remaining 5 and a half minutes to seal the victory.

Why it makes the list: Here's a fun little stat during Mack's tenure at Texas:

Mack Brown against unranked conference foes (non-Tech variety): 45-3 or 93.75%

Mack Brown against unranked Tech: 6-2 or 75%

This one hurts because it was the culmination of a disappointing 2002 season. Pre-season #3. That '02 Team was STACKED. Talent all over the place. Roy Williams, Derrick Johnson, Cedric Benson, Nathan Vasher, Cory Redding, and that's only the super duper badasses. Excepting 2005, this was the most talent on a Texas roster during the Mack Brown era. And it wasn't a particularly great Tech team either. They were 7-4 at the time, and one week away from getting shellacked 60-15 @ OU (sound familiar?). I'm sure that I'm biased because my brother-in-law went to Tech, but damn.

5. 2007 Kansas State 41, Texas 21

We all knew this team was flawed. The 2007 Horns showed that during the non-con slate, with games that were entirely too close against Arkansas St. (at least we're not Aggies and pulled out the W), @ Central Florida, and pulling away late against TCU. We didn't know how flawed until KState came to town. Everyone was eager to avenge the brutal 2006 loss in Manhattan (more on this later, in case you hadn't figured that out yet) but the Horns trailed 24-14 at the half. Jamaal Charles pulled Texas to within a FG early in the 3rd, but a Jordy Nelson (shudder and post idea: all SOB team aka guys who played disproportionately well against Texas. I've already got the skill positions filled) 89 yard punt return put this one effectively out of reach.

Why it makes the list: Texas came into the game #7 (although we all knew that was high) against unranked Kansas State. We had all the motivation in the world to kick the crap out of this team, and laid an egg. 2 special teams TD's allowed. An INT return for TD. Add it all up, and it was the largest margin of victory in a home loss during the Mack Brown era. And this is #5! Going to need a drink to keep reading, people.

4. (tie) 2006 KState 45, Texas 42 and 2006 A&M 12, Texas 7

I know. And I agree. Its a cop-out. But which one was worse, really? Losing Colt on the opening drive, or watching his head slosh around against the Agros? These two games are inseparable in my mind, because they combined to form the 3rd of 4 total losing streaks during the Mack Brown era (curiously, KState is involved in 3 of the 4). I'll spare you the recap, as you can read PB's recaps of both games here and here. Especially after the A&M one, PB was bitter. We all were. From Greg Davis calling a QB sneak, to Ron Prince channeling 2000 Bob Stoops, to the Limas touchdown that got called back, to Kellen Heard's bitch ass, these two games combined to ruin November of 2006.

Why it makes the list: Texas went from Title contender to Alamo Bowl in 2 weeks.

3. 2001 Colorado 39, Texas 37

When Applewhite relieved Chris Simms in the 2nd Quarter and immediately threw a 79 yard TD to BJ Johnson, I thought we were about to witness a fitting end to a great career. I jumped off of my barstool and started talking shit. I'll admit it. Applewhite could make you feel like anything was possible. But Major came in just a little too late, and a Colorado team that had lost to the Horns earlier in the year 41-7 managed to hang on to win 39-37 behind Chris Brown's 189 yards rushing and 3 TD's. Simms' numbers read look like a snuff film: 9-17, 130 yds, 3 INT's. With all that happened around the nation, Texas was effectively playing for a title shot, and was heavily favored to boot. The only silver lining in this loss was that it, in all likelihood, prevented Texas from running into the 2001 Miami team that violated Nebraska for the national title.

Why it makes the list: There was never any doubt about this one making the top 5. The 2005 Big 12 Title Game beating mitigated the resentment that I felt for Colorado somewhat, but this one still stings. This game above all others I hold against Chris Simms. We actually would have been better off if he'd just taken the snap and curled up in the fetal position for a half. I still say he should have been the game MVP for Colorado. Yes, its been 8 years and I'm still pissed. What of it? This post has, quite frankly, turned me into a diagreable, irrational, and for some reason paranoid person. I feel like Mel Gibson in Conspiracy Theory. I'm seeing links between losses where none exist. Only two more to go...

2. 2008 Texas Tech 39, Texas 33

Michael Crabtree will forever haunt my dreams. Cost Texas a MNC shot. One play. And not just one play. Any one of several plays, and this one turns out differently. But instead, we get the iconic game of 2008, a replay that we'll get to see for the rest of our lives, and a now irrelevant 45-35 victory over the Sooners.

Why it makes the list: Really?

1. 2000-2004 OU More, Texas Less

I'm not going to give you the scores. The link is only to the Historical Results page of MBTF. They're all in there. Every soul crushing, October deflating, season ending, Big 12 costing loss. Quentin Griffin. Roy Williams Superman. Every bounce (seriously, how many times has OU fumbled and then they recover it for a TD? Is that just me, because it seems like it happens every damn year) goes the Sooners way. For 5 long years, we wandered in the wilderness, until a prophet led us out.

Why it makes the list: I combined them all. I can't say that one hurt worse than the others. In fact, they all just combined to put the "can't beat OU" monkey on our collective backs for half a decade. The current "can't win it all without VY" monkey is much more personable. I guess what I'm trying to say is that the cumulative effect of these consecutive losses was much greater than any individual loss could be. Many of us questioned if we'd EVER beat OU again. These losses shaped the national perception of Texas football until VY washed it away in '05. And that's why they're the worst loss of the Mack Brown era.

So...that's it. I'm going to go cry in the shower now.

Ok, so this post is going to force me to disclose how big of a geek I am, but hey, its the off season, work is slow, what do you want from me?

This year, EA Sports is allowing gamers to build their own schools online. Create a program, customize, and then import it into the game when the game comes out. So I'm looking around in there (just curious, honest!) and see that you can use real teams as templates. Here is the link to Team Builder, but I think you have to have an EA account to view (doesn't cost anything though). And now that I've shamed myself, your 2010 Texas Longhorns (in descending order by Overall Rating).

Colt McCoy 98

Sergio Kindle 96

Jordan Shipley 95

Adam Ulatowski 93

Earl Thomas 92 (Earl getting some respect!)

Chris Hall 91

Rod Muckelroy 91

Chykie Brown 90

Brandon Collins 90

Kyle Hix 90

Cody Johnson 90

Blaine Irby 90 (Does EA know something we don't? You heard it here first!)

Jared Norton 89

Michael Huey 89

Lamar Houston 89

Justin Tucker 84

John Chiles (WR) 84

Mark Buchanan 84

Dravannti Johnson 81

DJ Monroe 81

Kheeston Randall 81

Mason Walters 81

Alex Okafor 80 (This is WAY too low)

Kenny Vaccaro 79

RT 76 (Soph) 79

Mike Wilcoxon 77

Patrick Nkwopara 75

Kyle Kriegel 73

Some interesting omissions, especially with the Freshman. I'm sure that the community here will be able to help me fill in the blanks. I didn't spend too much time on this, so I apologize for spelling errors. I had to match up some numbers off of MBTF, but this should be 90ish percent accurate. Enjoy.

Over the past 11 seasons, Texas has arguably been involved in more iconic and memorable games than any other Div 1 program. One thing that struck me in compiling this list was how many of the close ones we have won. It's no great wonder that when you think of the 3 primary QB's of the Mack Brown era (Applewhite, Young, McCoy), clutch is among the first words that comes to mind. There are 3 games in particular that were tough to leave off of this list, and here are links to the game recaps. I'm sure people will disagree with some of these rankings, and that's kinda the point.

My criteria were as follows:

1. Program significance

2. Season significance

3. Great finish: Not a must, but it seems to almost always happen when Texas is in a big game anyway.

4. Strength of Opponent: This kept a couple of Tech games (2003, 2006) and Okie St 2007 out of the list. Also Vince's heroics @ Kansas.

Last 3 games out:

Ryan Bailey in the snow

Only win @ K-State

Another Nebraska winning streak eats it.

And there you have it. So, without further ado, here's my top 10 games of the Mack Brown Era, complete with links, videos, and cheesy headlines!

10. October 8th, 2005: Bomar'd.

Only true blowout on this list. This game was the big psychological hurdle for the 2005 title team, and for most Texas fans as well. After 5 straight years, it was time. Texas dominated from the locker room on.

Texas 45, Oklahoma 12

9. November 6th, 2004: The Comeback vs. Okie St.

After getting their ass kicked for 29 minutes, Texas finally showed up right before the half, with Vince hitting Bo Scaife for a touchdown. Add in a Mack Brown halftime speech, and the second half was pure Texas dominance.

Texas 56, Oklahoma St 35

8. October 31st, 1998: Nebraska's 47 game win streak snapped

One thing about Mack Brown: He owns Nebraska. 6-1 during his tenure vs the Huskers. This win, on the backs of Major and Ricky, ended a 47 game home win streak for Nebraska. Applewhite finds McGarity for the game winner with under 3 minutes to play.

Texas 20, Nebraska 16

7. December 28th, 2001: Major Holiday

Major Applewhite's final game as a Longhorn. Down 16 to start the 4th. Ivan Williams scores the game winner with :38 left. Holiday Bowl record for points scored. And I can't find a damn video of any of it.

Texas 47, Washington 43

6. October 11th, 2008: 45-35

Texas 45, Oklahoma 35

5. September 10th, 2005: Goodbye, Columbus

The entire country was jacked for this game. And it lived up to the hype. Love you always, Limas. I always liked the story afterward about Huff and someone else challenging Ted Ginn to a race, and Ginn backed down.

Texas 25, Ohio St. 22

4. January 5th, 2009: Quan's Fiesta

Ugly, ugly first half. But the second half had it all. Thank God we won this game, otherwise, we'd be no better than Cal fans.

Texas 24, Ohio St. 21

3. November 27th, 1998: Ricky's Run

Not only did Ricky seal the Heisman, but this was also a win by an unranked Texas team over #6 A&M on a Kris Stockton FG with 3 seconds left. Hell of a lot of good stuff for a regular season game.

Texas 26, A&M 24

2. January 1st, 2005: Vince Runs Wild on Wolverines

How did Vince get out of that sack? Still gets me every time. Also, watch the great block by David Thomas on the last touchdown run. He slows down to get the guy behind him, and then blows up a linebacker. God I miss David Thomas.

Texas 38, Michigan 37

1. January 4th, 2006: The Rose Bowl

Texas 41, USC 38

1. January 4th, 2006: The Rose Bowl
2. January 1st, 2005: Texas vs Michigan
3. November 27th, 1998: Ricky's Run
4. January 5th, 2009: Quan's Fiesta
5. September 10th, 2005: Limas @ Columbus
6. October 11th, 2008: 45-35
7. December 28th, 2001: Applewhite's comeback vs Washington
8. October 31st, 1998: Nebraska's 47 game win streak snapped
9. November 6th, 2004: The Comeback vs. Okie
10. October 8th, 2005: Bomar'd.

So there it is. Any thoughts?

Colt's Senior Year: Records in Sight

While I'm all for giving tOSU and the Fiesta Bowl their due attention, Colt's announcement that he was returning for his Senior year, along with this post from Barking Carnival, got me thinking about Colt's place in history. He already holds every major record at Texas, but what about nationally? Below are several major records that Colt has a shot at. The conclusion that can be drawn from these numbers is that we've been downright spoiled at the Quarterback position for the better part of a decade.

NCAA Career wins: 42, David Greene, UGA (2001-2004)

With a win over tOSU, Colt would finish his Junior year with 32 victories, needing only our standard 10 wins as a Senior to tie the winningest QB in NCAA history. 11 wins and it's only Colt at the top.

NCAA Career starts: 51, Phillip Rivers, NCST (2000-2003)

If he stays healthy, Colt definitely eclipses this one.

NCAA Touchdowns Responsible for: 146, Colt Brennan, HAW (2005-2007)

McCoy has been responsible for 99 touchdowns thus far. With a decent game against tOSU, and 13 or 14 games next year, this record is within reach (though by no means automatic). That Brennan put up those numbers in 3 years is mind-boggling.

NCAA Career Passing Efficiency: 168.9, Ryan Dinwiddie, Boise St. (2000-2003)

Colt currently sits at 159.1, good enough for 8th All-time. If Colt were to replicate his numbers from this year in 2009, he would finish with with a career passer rating of 164, good enough for 3rd All Time. This is where all the picks from his soph year come back to haunt him.

NCAA Career Completion Percentage: 70.4%, Colt Brennan, HAW (2005-2007)

Colt's career completion rate is 70.19%. If he were to duplicate his numbers from this year next year, his career completion percentage would be 72%. This one is definitely in sight.

In Conclusion:

Were Colt to come close reproducing his stats from this year in 2009, he would be set the records for Wins, Starts, TD's, Completion %, and be 3rd all time in Passer Rating. Not bad for a 3-Star prospect from Tuscola. It's quite possible that our last two QB's could end up BOTH being Top 10 All-Time players.

Some details on the (computer) polls

We all know by now that our lead in the computers is .06. I thought I'd break it out, poll by poll, to see what we're really working with. I'm sure PB and others have copious amounts of data and analysis en route, but here is a (hopefully) good primer on each of the polls and our lead/deficit. For my conclusion as to probable change in each poll, I'm assuming all favorites hold serve, which is the only way any of this matters anyway. If you haven't seen it yet, the BCS site has a nice lil PDF with all the computer rankings shown individually. Linky

Wolfe

Alabama 10.173

Texas 10.128

Tech 9.889

OU (sucks) 9.888

Conclusion: OU (sucks) picks up at least one point here next week.

Billingsley (Billyzane's BFF)

Alabama 320.349

OU (sucks) 314.425

Texas 311.780

Tech 309.763

Conclusion: Probably stays as is, too much ground for OU to make up on Bama, and Tech is not passing us with Baylor.

Anderson & Hester

Alabama .819

Utah .805

Texas .803

OU (sucks) .786

Tech .785

Conclusion: A little hope here, as we have a substantial lead over OU (sucks), and are oh so close to Utah. I'm gonna (wistfully) say that we pick up a point here.

Jeff Sagarin

Texas 93.53

Tech 92.59

Alabama 92.38

OU (sucks) 92.32

Conclusion: He's our buddy now, but I think he's going to hurt us next week. I think OU (sucks) picks up 2 points here, jumping Bama and Tech.

Colley

Texas .9446

Alabama .9160

Utah .9058

Florida .9021

OU (sucks) .8939

Conclusion: Incomplete. Although, since the highest and lowest computer rankings are tossed, I think he may be tossed from both Texas and OU's standings, as he is this week.

UPDATE: OU should be far enough out that they can't pass Utah. As long as they don't move into third, Colley is still a throw out.

Massey

Is as lazy as Colley, and has not updated his site either. Here are his rankings, per the BCS site.

OU (sucks) 2.56

Texas 2.532

Tech 2.513

Alabama 2.508

Conclusion: Incomplete. Hard to see any change here though. I'll say that this one stays as is.

UPDATE: No change will be occcuring here, and Massey would be thrown out for OU, as he gives them their sole number 1 ranking.

Add 'em up!

Thrown out, Texas: Colley (1st), Billingsley (3rd)

Thrown out, OU: Massey (1st), Colley (4th)

OU (sucks) nets a +.02 in the computers. If the polls hold as is (I know, I know) here is what you would get in the BCS...

Texas: .9242

OU (sucks): .9225

but, if we don't pick up one in Anderson & Hester, then we drop to

Texas: .92086667

and OU (sucks) stays at .9225, and the land thieves are in KC. Basically, just root against anyone that Utah played. Game of inches indeed.

So there was not a Google Calendar for Texas Men's Basketball, so I went ahead and made a public one. I don't know if anyone else out there is as big of a geek as me, but I need that info on my phone, computer, reminders, etc.

Search for Texas Men's Basketball in "Public Calendars" if you want to subscribe. Right now it's just times and locations, but I'll add TV info soon. Let me know if there is anything else that might be helpful on there.

Cheers. Hook em!

After the 38-14 victory over Colorado, I'm more worried about Red River. While the defense has definitely improved over the last 5 weeks, I still don't think we have the answers necessary in the secondary.

Colt has been amazing thus far, but he showed flashes of '07 Colt, forcing a couple of balls in the first game with a semblance of pressure. Going in to ou, the Irby injury becomes all too relevant. Shipley and Cosby have done all that anyone could ask for, but we don't have a third receiver. We don't have a tight end who can catch. We do have a solid outlet in Ogbonnaya, but we're not going to see him break anything for distance against a defense the likes of ou. If they are able to clamp down on the corners, our offense could be in for a long day at the fair.

The running game looks even more suspect after playing our first legitimate defense of the year. Cody has promise in short yardage situations, but he isn't going to provide the ever elusive explosives. If Fozzy doesn't play, who do we have that is capable of breaking one? And for that matter, could Fozzy break one if he played?

I realize I'm dwelling on the negative after our 5th consecutive blowout, and if anyone would lke to portray this glass as half full, it would be most welcomed.

End the Madness

Fellow BON'ers,

I just got up and came to BON as I usually do, first thing in the morning. I see that the Tebow thread is continuing to grow longer and longer as Beergut baits more and more of us into an fruitless discussion about the greatest player of all time based upon various ever-changing metrics, blah, blah, blah. Let me save you the time folks.

It is madness to have a discussion with someone who is going to distort facts, change the rules as he goes, and is impervious to reason. While Beergut is clearly capable of bringing something interesting to the table, he is obviously more interested in provoking people. He does so here, at Double T Nation, and other SBN blogs. Meanwhile he hasn't commented at 12thmanchild in over a year. This is not someone who wants to talk college football, this is someone who wants to argue. My own instinct upon reading some of his most recent nonsense is to dive back into the fray, as I have done numerous times before.

I'm not going to this time.

There are numerous blogs out there where we can argue with each other, walk each other into semantic traps, and engage in spiteful rhetoric. As PB suggested, orangebloods is only a few keystrokes (and a subscription fee) away.

What drew me to BON in the first place was the lack of bickering and the preponderance of high minded discourse about all things Longhorn. I know that I have contributed to the watering-down of great content with petty arguments, and for that, I apologize.

I guess I just wanted to say that while I will continue to actively read this blog, and regularly comment, for what it's worth, I personally am not going to engage in the "conversations" with everyone's favorite aggie.

Don't know if I am late to the party on this or not. If so, sanction me!

It seems that Vince has a couple of new cross-trainers out with Reebok. One pair is in the blue/light blue palette of the Tennessee Titans. I'm not sure where the other color combo comes from...

Vince Young Cross Trainers

Just thought it was kinda cool. I think that this program will continue to feel the effects of Vince (and KD to a slightly lesser extent) for years to come. Here's to hoping that they both continue to be outstanding ambassadors for the Texas program.

KD scored 29 last night despite another poor shooting performance (7-21). That was his last summer league game before going back to Vegas for US National Team practice. I was trolling for articles and came across http://www.supersonicsoul.com (a nice Sonics blog, for what its worth.) They had a link to a great article on Durant. Here's the link

http://www.sltrib.com/sports/ci_6400987

(I apologize profusely for the lack of html embedding skills)

Anyway, most of the article is rehash, that we've all heard a thousand times. Running the hill, he's driven, etc. However, hearing him say that he almost cried because he couldn't work out around draft time...I just can't help but love the kid. Thought some of you might enjoy it.
