Mocking The Draft First Round NFL Mock Draft (28 Picks) -- Extended Analysis

1 Rams Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska - Unless the Rams trade down, which wouldn't be a terrible move, GM Billy Devaney will be deciding between two players, or rather one player and one position. The no brainer is Ndamukong Suh. One of the best players of the last 5 years, Suh has the rare combination of talent, production and intangibles. If the Rams were to go elsewhere, it'd be for Jimmy Claussen or Sam Bradford.
-Other Move(s) : Trade down for multiple picks. The Rams are at such a talent disadvantage compared to the rest of the league that they may just move down, take one of the other DT or OT prospects, and stockpile for the future. Moving down and taking Okung makes sense as Alex Barron may be wearing out his welcome and is a UNFA (in a capped year). Jason Smith and Okung would be nice bookends for Jake Locker...

2 Lions Eric Berry, S, Tennessee - The Lions did a great job in the 2009 draft of hitting on Stafford, Louis Delmas, DeAnde Levy and potentially Sammie Lee Hill. The biggest needs for the Lions in 2010 are CB, OG, DE, SS and DT. Joe Haden is the only CB worthy of a top 15 pick, but in the last five years there's only been three cover corners taken in the top ten (all in 2005, Pacman Jones, Antrel Rolle and Carlos Rogers) - not exactly an inspiring trio. With the nature of the NFC North shifting to a pass happy conference, unless the Lions trade back (in the hopes of taking Haden), they'll most likely go with BPA Eric Berry or Gerald McCoy.
-Other Move(s) : If the Lions get an offer for a top ten pick and a 2nd rounder, they'd be hard pressed to pass it up. Russell Okung, Derrick Morgan and Haden would all be solid consolation prizes. Gerald McCoy also fills a void at DT.

3 Bucs Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma - Trading away the late Gaines Adams midseason showed that the Bucs are in full rebuilding mode. That move also showed the inadequacies of the entire Bucs defensive line. Ranking last in rushing yards allowed and finishing near the bottom in sacks, the Bucs need help on the defensive interior immediately. McCoy and Suh are more 1 and 1a than 1 and 2, so getting a comparable player at a lesser price makes alot of sense.
-Other Move(s) : If the Lions take McCoy, Berry would be the pick. He's the dominating centerfielder needed in Raheem Morris's cover 2 system.

4 Redskins Russell Okung, OT, Oklahoma State - Jason Campbell isn't that bad of a QB. As far a weapons go, the Redskins are dreadful. Clinton Portis is quickly going the way of LaDainian Tomlinson and at the same time Santana Moss is going the way of Laverneus Coles. Mike Shanahan does a great job of maximizing potential, so if anyone is going to revamp the offense, it's him. There's also the looming issue of switching from a productive 4-3 defense over to the 3-4. There isn't a dominant OLB worthy of a top 5 pick, unless they think Derrick Morgan can make the switch, so OL makes the most sense. Russell Okung is the best OL available in this year's draft and should be a good fit for Washington.
-Other Move(s) : The only way the Skins don't take Okung is if they take a QB or believe Derrick Morgan can play OLB. If they do go QB, Clausen will be their man.

5 Chiefs Rolando McClain, LB, Alabama - There's a lot of talk about the biggest need for the Chiefs. After watching Jamaal Charles put up huge numbers in the second half of the season, you have to wonder if the O-Line gained confidence throughout the season or was Larry Johnson just that bad. On defense the Chiefs lack any real playmakers. Tyson Jackson, Glen Dorsey and Tamba Hali all need to show they were worthy of their lofty draft picks and can produce in the 3-4. NT seems to be a major concern, as well as LB, so it's either Rolando McClain or someone like Brian Price or Dan Williams. Both DT's are worth 1st round picks but probably aren't worth a top-5 selection. McClain is the pick.
-Other Move(s) : If it's not McClain, the Chiefs could go in many directions. Brandon Flowers is a stud CB in the making; Adding Joe Haden would relieve some of the pressure on the rest of the secondary and give them another play maker on defence. OL is also a concern so Trent Williams, Anthony Davis or Bruce Campbell would fit the need. At DT, Brian Price and Dan Williams are options. Earl Thomas also fills a need at free safety.

6 Seahawks Jimmy Claussen, QB, Notre Dame - Matt Hasselbeck has shown he can't stay healthy and Seneca Wallace has shown he's not a starter. I'd be willing to bet that by draft day Jimmy Clausen will be the clear cut number one QB and considered a top-5 player. With that being said, Walter Jones is at the end of his road. If the Seahawks can wait eight picks for an OL, Clausen will be their pick.
-Other Move(s) : Trent Williams, Anthony Davis or Bruce Campbell would fit a need at OL. On the other hand, even with the move made for T.J. Houshmanzadeh, the Seahawks lacked an explosive down field threat all year long. Dez Bryant would fit that need. Joe Haden also fits a need at CB.

7 Browns Joe Haden, CB, Florida - The Browns were much more competitive than their 5-11 record would lead one to believe. There are building blocks in place in the form of Joe Thomas, Jerome Harrison, Eric Wright and D'Qwell Jackson, but there are also major concerns at safety, 2nd corner and the right side of the offensive line. In addition, the Browns have floundered for the last decade because of QB controversy (among other things) and need to make a decisive move to help ease the fan base's worries. It's my opinion that Holmgren will stick with Brady Quinn, release or trade Anderson and bring in a veteran QB to help tutor Quinn. For that reason I think they go BPA - CB Joe Haden from Florida. The best cover corner in the draft improves the Browns secondary immediately and helps push Eric Wright for years to come.
-Other Move(s) : I can't imagine the Browns taking a QB with two borderline starters already on the roster. The same OL trio of Williams, Davis and Campbell are all potential candidates for the Browns right tackle spot. All would be immediate upgrades.

8 Raiders Anthony Davis, OT, Rutgers - Darrius Heyward-Bey, Darren McFadden, JaMarcus Russell and Michael Huff don't look anything like future pro-bowlers, so there has to be some added pressure to find a legitimate pro prospect with this year's top ten pick. Carlos Dunlap (DE, Florida) fits Al Davis's criteria. Potential explosiveness, check. Questionable work ethic/character concerns, check. OT Anthony Davis is going to fly up draft boards after official workouts and Al Davis loves the guys who can jump over cones quicker than other guys. Even though it's against my better judgement, I'll say they do the smart thing and take Davis.
-Other Move(s) : Carlos Dunlap, Jason Pierre-Paul, Derrick Morgan all are potential picks for the Raiders. They'll all test well at the combine and will fill a need for a pass rusher if Seymour leaves. OT's Bruce Campbell and Trent Williams are also possibilities. I doubt they grade Bradford out highly enough to take him at 8.

9 Bills Trent Williams, OT, Oklahoma - The Bills have a ton of holes on offense and defense, but none bigger than the gaping hole at left tackle. I don't see the Bills taking a chance on Bradford because of questions about his arm strength and having to play in Buffalo and other inclimate AFC East venues. Trent Williams is solid in the pass protection as well as run blocking and would be a staple for the Bills O-line.
-Other Move(s) : The Bills take Sam Bradford who takes over for Ryan Fitzpatrick after signing his contract.

10 Jaguars Derrick Morgan, DE, Georgia Tech - Jacksonville had 14 sacks all year. 14. Derrick Morgan is the best all-around DE and would immediately help the futile Jags pass rush. They can wait a round or two on Tebow.
-Other Move(s) : It's pass rush, pass rush, pass rush for the Jags. That could mean Pierre-Paul or Dunlap as options other than Morgan. A curveball would be Sam Bradford. A slider would be Dez Bryant.

11 Broncos Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma State - After a torrid 6-0 start, the Broncos faded in the 2nd half of the season and missed the playoffs. There were obvious deficiencies on the offensive side of the ball. Knowshon Moreno who didn't show the explosiveness that Broncos fans expected and the passing game became lackluster after injuries to Eddie Royal and Brandon Stokley. On defense, the linebacking corps deteriorated through the season and teams were able to run at will. If McClain is available at 11, or 10 depending on the coin flip, he'd definitely be their best option. If McClain isn't around, and also if Brandon Marshall goes diva again, potentially demanding a trade, the Broncos may be wise to draft Oklahoma State WR Dez Bryant. Denver would get great value out of the best WR in this year's draft while filling a need on offense.
-Other Move(s) : Brandon Spikes would be an upgrade at ILB, but may be a reach at 10 or 11. Another position of need is DT. Brian Price and Dan Williams would fit, but if a guy like Bryant is available (and Marshall is traded), Denver would be smart to wait until the 2nd round for someone for a DT like Terrence Cody or Jared Odrick.

12 Dolphins Sergio Kindle, LB, Texas - The biggest need for the Dolphins is at wide receiver, but I doubt they reach for the next best WR in Brandon Lafell. In addition to receiver, the Dolphins need to get younger at outside linebacker. As far as natural 3-4 OLB's go, the best available would be Sergio Kindle.
-Other Move(s) : If Bill Parcells feels he can mold one of the edge rushers into a 3-4 OLB, he'll most likely take Pierre-Paul or Everson Griffin instead of Sergio Kindle. Florida DE Carlos Dunlap may also be the pick if the Dolphins can overlook his off field issues.

13 49ers Bruce Campbell, OT, Maryland - The 49ers are likely to grab an OL with one of their two first round picks. At this point in the draft the best tackle prospect available would be Bruce Campbell, but the safest tackle pick would be Bryan Bulaga. If Seattle doesn't take an OL with the sixth pick, they'll definitely be leaning heavily on taking one with the 14th pick. For this reason the 49ers would be more inclined to take "their guy" rather than waiting until the 17th or 18th pick. Campbell probably goes based on his higher upside.
-Other Move(s) : Bryan Bulaga would be the last OL prospect worthy of a first round selection.

14 Seahawks Bryan Bulaga, OT, Iowa - Walter Jones is breaking down and after taking franchise QB Jimmy Clausen with the 6th pick, the Seahawks will be looking to protect his blindside for years to come. Bryan Bulaga is the best available OL here.

15 Giants Earl Thomas, S, Texas - The defensive secondary was abused after Kenny Phillips went down. At the same time, the linebacking corps looked mediocre when Antonio Pearce went down. BPA to fit a need would be safety Earl Thomas.
-Other Move(s) : The defensive interior could also be a place of need early in the Giants draft. Brian Price, Dan Williams, Terrence Cody and Jared Odrick are all solid DT prospects. The Giants could stand to wait until the 2nd round to take Odrick or Arthur Jones from Syracuse.

16 49ers Taylor Mays, S, USC - After getting an offensive tackle with their first pick, the 49ers will look to take the BPA while filling a need. The 49ers are weak at safety. Michael Lewis isn't exactly a cover guy, Dashon Goldson is a nice nfl player, but may not be worthy of a starting spot and Mark Roman shouldn't be starting for any team. Taylor Mays's stock dropped after a suspect senior season, but the niners get a steal here at 16.
-Other Move(s) : It's the same story with a lot of the previous teams. The wide receiver, cornerback and inside linebacker classes are short on top level talent. San Francisco could use help at corner and receiver but will have to wait until later rounds.

17 Titans Jason Pierre-Paul, DE, South Florida - Last year the Titans struggled to sustain a pass rush throughout an entire game and since they rarely blitz, they'll be looking to rotate more pure pass rushers into the 4-man front. Jason Pierre-Paul jumps out on film and in workouts. He'd be a solid pick for Tennessee.
-Other Move(s) : Everson Griffen fits the need for a rush DE along with Carlos Dunlap. It's hard to imagine the Titans making many changes to the offensive line unless it's Kevin Mawae's successor, and even that won't happen until at least the 2nd round. Tennessee could possibly go LB, but DE appeared to be their biggest weakness throughout the year.

18 Steelers Dan Williams, NT, Tennessee - Another team looking for a safety, the Steelers aren't happy to see Thomas and Mays off the board within the last three picks, and in turn there isn't another safety, or defensive back for that matter, worthy of a first round pick at this point. Casey Hampton may be gone due to free agency so the Steelers may look to take a similar style nose tackle. Dan Williams could be that NT and would play right away if Hampton heads elsewhere.
-Other Move(s) : Terrrence Cody is probably better suited for NT than Brian Price, but it's hard to see Cody taken this high. Price could also play DE in the 3-4.

19 Falcons Carlos Dunlap, DE, Florida - The Falcons lack a pure pass rusher outside of John Abraham and even he was less than effective over the course of the season. Carlos Dunlap may be the best pass rusher in the draft, but his stock was definitely hurt after receiving a DUI. This would be a high risk/reward pick for an Atlanta franchise with a checkered past.
-Other Move(s) : Everson Griffen is the last of the big time pass rush DE's and could be a fit here also. OLB is also a concern with Mike Peterson aging quickly. Navarro Bowman would be a solid choice.

20 Texans C.J. Spiller, RB, Clemson - If Steve Slaton doesn't turn into Tiki Barber there's no need to look at a RB. Well, he did, and his replacements (Arian Foster, Chris Brown and Ryan Moats) didn't fare much better. Spiller is the most dynamic and explosive player in this year's draft and would be a steal at 20.
-Other Move(s) : OG Mike Iupati could go here as well as could DT Brian Price. Both would fill needs. The Texans could use a corner as well but won't reach for one with Spiller and Price still on the board.

21 Bengals Jermaine Gresham, TE, Oklahoma - The Bengals are desparate for an explosive play maker on offense. Chad Johnson has clearly lost a step and Laverneus Coles didn't perform up to expectations. Unless they reach for Lafell or Golden Tate, I could really see them taking Jermaine Gresham. Gresham has been called the best tight end prospect since Keith Jackson. His knee injury (partial ACL tear - had surgery) probably caused him to drop a few spots, so the Bengals would be lucky to get him in the bottom half of the first round.
-Other Move(s) : It's hard to see the Bengals passing on Gresham who has all the attributes of a next level tight end. If they do pass, maybe because of injury concerns, Iupati fills a need at guard and DE Everson Griffen would help a pass rush which was less than effective after Odom went down.

22 Patriots Brian Price, DT, UCLA - The biggest need for the Patriots is defensive line. Whether it's at nose tackle because of Wilfork potentially leaving or at DE/DT, the Patriots need to get better against the run and get more pressure on the quarterback. Even though Bill Belichek has shyed away from running backs in the last few drafts, I could really see the Patriots taking Ryan Matthews or Jonathan Dwyer. That being said I think the pick is between Price or Griffen. The Patriots have quite a few situational rush linebackers and Griffen may take some time to get used to the position. Price can push the pocket and get in the backfield as good as any of the DT's left in the draft. The Pats get Price at a premium.
-Other Move(s) : OG Mike Iupati, RB's Jonathan Dwyer, Jahvid Best and Ryan Matthews, DE Everson Griffen and DT Terrence Cody are all possible picks here as well.

23 Packers Mike Iupati, OG, Idaho - The Packers would hate to see the top five left tackle prospects taken before 23. The biggest need after OL and CB is adding another rush linebacker to couple with Clay Matthews. Although Brad Jones showed flashes, there's no doubt there will be plenty of available guys who would automatically trump Jones's skills. The Packers rarely draft low work ethic, low character guys, so a guy like Ole Miss DE/LB Greg Hardy probably won't get picked. Clemson DE/LB Ricky Sapp could make for an interesting pick. Ted Thompson takes chances on high upside guys who may have slipped due to injury reports or underwhelming production and Ricky Sapp definitely fits that criteria. The extremely productive Jerry Hughes (DE/LB - TCU) would also be a possibility with a good showing at the combine. In the end I'll give Mike Iupati the nod based on being the best OL player available albiet at guard. Protecting Rodgers is paramount to GB's success and there will plenty of opportunities later in the draft for corners and rush linebackers.
-Other Move(s) : There just aren't many guys that fit at this spot given their relative draft projections. Even though the Packers moved up to take Clay Matthews in last year's draft, if this is the board they're faced with, I wouldn't be surprised at all to see them move back. New England (44, 47, 53), Tampa Bay (35, 42) and Kansas City (36, 50) have multiple 2nd round picks.

24 Eagles Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma - Donovan McNabb isn't getting any younger and isn't getting any more popular. Bradford would benefit sitting behind McNabb for a year.
-Other Move(s) : The Eagles need to upgrade at linebacker and there will be quite a few solid prospects in the 2nd round. Guys like Ricky Sapp, Jerry Hughes and Eric Norwood could potentially go here, but Bradford would be solid value at 24. Navarro Bowman would also fit well in Philly.

25 Ravens Brandon LaFell, WR, LSU - The Ravens are in desparate need of a playmaker on offense. Ray Rice led Baltimore with 78 receptions and previously retired Derrick Mason led in yards and touchdowns. Mardy Gilyard didn't impress many in his bowl game and scouts question his lack of size. The choice will be between Arrelious Benn of Illinois, Golden Tate of Notre Dame and Brandon LaFell of LSU. Tate was the most productive of the group, but also lacks ideal size. Benn has the size and speed of a first rounder, but had a terrible statistical year. LaFell has the best blend of size, speed and production.
-Other Move(s) : Could go corner, could go OLB with Navarro Bowman.

26 Cardinals Everson Griffen, DE, USC - The Cardinals biggest concerns are on the defensive side of the ball. If their playoff performance showed anything, it's that they're in desparate need of a pure pass rusher and another cover corner. If Karlos Dansby moves on in free agency look for the Cardinals to take Navarro Bowman, otherwise Griffen looks like the best available
-Other Move(s) : With the big time tight end prospect off the board (Gresham), Aaron Hernandez would be an interesting pick to a team without any semblance of a tight end.

27 Cowboys Brandon Spikes, LB, Florida - Dallas needs to get younger at LB with Brooking possibly retiring. Brandon Spikes looks like a Jerry Jones guy - big name with solid production.

28 Chargers Jahvid Best, RB, California - LT is definitely on his last legs. He's just not the same player he was three years ago. Darren Sproles is a nice complement, but doesn't seem like he can handle a full workload. Jahvid Best is an LT like player coming out of college. Big numbers, high top end speed and great vision.

Best available...Navarro Bowman, Jonathan Dwyer, Patrick Robinson, Golden Tate, Arrelious Benn, Ricky Sapp, Jerry Hughes, Aaron Hernandez, Brandon Graham, Charles Brown, Terrence Cody
