Would Milton Have Gotten The CATCH RJ Made? (take 2)

After last night's unreal catch that <strike>Cliffy</strike> Reed made to rob Fielder (and he was classy enough to tip his hat, so you have to respect the man for that), the mind boggles: would Milton have made that catch without going on the DL? I mean I think he'd have made a heck of a try, but would it have happened?

And I'm not here to bomb or blast Milton .. so let's lay off the guy for his groin pull .. just to ask do you think his skill set would have matched that of <strike>Cliff's</strike> Reed?

(PART II : I promise hereafter to ensure my medications are up to date, properly consumed, and in circulation within my synapses before ever turning to BCB again .. Promise.

Thanks for the Thread Police to keep me straight - YOU have a purpose!)

Seeing how the economy is going to tank long into this year, no matter WHAT the government does or says (don't get me started), travelling to the Friendly Confines rapidly has become for this poor old Cub fan one that has just become too expensive. I used to get really, well, BLUE about this because there's few things in life I love or long for more than to BE home in Chicago watching our boys at Cubs Park do their thing.

So I'm probably going to start going to the Cubs' Double A operation here in East Tennessee, the Smokies which - mercifully - are only about an hour or so away with tickets being a whole lot more affordable. Carolinacub has suggested a hook up with me and I was just wondering if other BCB'ers would like to maybe consider one with us. I'd only be able to get to Friday night or Saturday games, but I think it would be a blast.

Guess I'll have to dig up their schedule and look, but I think it would be so cool to see any of the Cub Nation who reside in this neck of the world .. Hope to hear from y'uns .. (I learned that from having lived here)

Ok, I searched the site, didn't see anything related to this story specifically here. Sorry that I have to use the 75 word caveat here to defend my posting here since this may have already been posted. There's been a lot specifically discussing the A-Rod furor, but I didn't see -- and it was a quick look -- anything about this here.

Looks like A-Roid and Barroid's juicing is finally cashing in some long term dividends for the game.

ESPN: What the Mets might pay for Wood to be their closer

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?entryID=3749632&name=olney_buster&campaign=rss&source=MLBHeadlines

The Mets intend to present what they consider to be suitable offers to closer targets during the winter meetings. It's not known precisely what they will offer to which pitcher, but here is an educated guess: Francisco Rodriguez, three years and $36 million; Brian Fuentes, three years and $30 million; Kerry Wood, two years and $16 million to $18 million.

The Mets are really sitting in a strong position, as perhaps the only big-market team intent on spending good money on a reliever, and their intention is to present the offers with this marching order: The first reliever who accepts our offer is going to be our closer.

And the two relievers who don't sign with the Mets will be left to negotiate with the rest of the field. Now, it may be that Milwaukee will emerge as a wild card in this market and offer one of the relievers a pretty good deal; remember, the Brewers were once willing to give Francisco Cordero a four-year deal, so it wouldn't necessarily be a shocker if they extended themselves for K-Rod, especially if it appears that they will not be able to retain CC Sabathia. But the Mets are going to land some reliever at their asking price, in what is a buyer's market for relievers.

Ok, ok .. we all know and believe here in the Cubs Nation that Ron Santo has been long overlooked, dissed and ignored by the Hall's committees and should have been there several years ago. That's non negotiable. I'm not going to argue the point.

On a blog linked within a Fanshot comparing Santo to Richie Allen, the rather delusional author was trying to convince his readership that Allen was the better men with rather specious reasoning. The discussion afterwards was a bit energetic and one person made the rather interesting comment:

I vote to remove about 40 guys already enshrined who lack the definition of greatness.

An interesting perspective .. while I don't like to speak ill of the dead or alive, I'd be curious to know who YOU might consider for such a vote. I got some of my own idears .. what are YERS?

How would a Cubs and Rays WS have gone down?

A long winter is ahead, so I may as well ask it now. I'm going to just have to get this off my chest, since the inevitable question comes up ..

What if somehow, the Cubs had played up to their potential in the postseason this year? What if It Did Happen?

What if the Cubs had engaged in a hard fought series of NL championship games in which no one got hurt, every starter went deep into their games and a brilliant combination of defensive/offensive team effort had brought them over the Dodgers and the Phillies to the doors of the 2008 World Series?

How would we have done? Assuming the Cubs didn't repeat the chokesterism from 2007 and played some decent, competitive and exciting baseball that this whole 2008 season prompted and set us up to expect from them and they actually took the NL pennant, what would have gone on in the 2008 World Series between the Cubs and the Rays?

Personally, watching the Cubs get basically owned by the Rays earlier this year was not particularly encouraging. I will have to drag the videos out to watch and try to pretend they're WS games. If they were, admittedly, coaching and matchups would be different, but the play was still pretty decisive. The Rays just looked a whole lot better than we did .. even though we ended with almost identical records.

Engaging in "What If?" speculation is the lot of the Cubs fan so I guess I'll bite and send up the flag and see what you scholars, dreamers and fans say. You're Lou Pinella and you're coaching a team that was still on a roll - who's going to be in your lineup and rotation? Or you're an observer wondering how to hedge your bets. Or you're a fan just trying to figure out how to save a spot at the fence gate and watch even an inning or so of a WS game since you couldn't sell your kidney on Ebay to afford getting a ticket on StubHub. What would happen?
