Cal State University recently bestowed upon the talented and well-spoken broadcaster Joe Morgan an honorary doctorate of humane letters.

Full article is here:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/baseball/mlb/06/15/morgan.degree.ap/index.html

Hopefully this won't mean Jon Miller is going to start refering to him as "Doc Morgan" during telecasts now.

And, finally, to meet the minimum word requirement, here's a video with some interesting "trivia":

THIS GUY gets a doctorate degree. THIS GUY.

The Jimmy Edmonds Experience

Perhaps some Cub fans might feel I'm jumping the gun here, but after watching Jim Edmonds play in a Cubs uniform for the last several games, it's my belief that the guy is spent.

I know he made a pretty great catch the other night in Houston, but with the way Pie and Johnson have been handling center so far this year I feel that either of them have a pretty good chance to make the same play as well.

At the plate, he stinks. 2-12 is not the way to prove you've got something left. After watching him kill a potential rally last night with that double play, and tonight flying out routinely with Hoffpauir on second and one out in the 7th, I think that all he's doing for the team is eating up a roster spot that someone in Triple-A deserves more.

Your thoughts?

Back end of the rotation

Yes, we all know Lou's going to figure this whole mess out in the next few weeks, but just for fun, what do the members of BCB think about the situation? Who should fill the last two spots of the rotation?

My vote is for Lieber and Marshall. Marquis can't pitch, and as of late has proven he isn't much of a clubhouse guy either. Dempster, unless he absolutely knocks the socks of everyone in Arizona, seems far too unreliable, a Marquis Part Two, if you will.

What sayeth you?

The announcers?

With the 10th anniversary of Harry Caray's death upon us this week, perhaps the question should be raised-How good are Len and Bob?

Personally, I think Len is a decent play-by-play guy. His call on Aramis' walk-off homer against the Brewers on 6/29 still stands out to me from last year, and overall he seems to be good at his job.

Bob Brenly, on the other hand...Hearing him on WGN broadcasts makes me wonder why no team is aknockin' for his managerial skills. He did lead a team to the World Series in this decade. That said, in my opinion he often tells stories/gives technical insights that are either boring, too long or simply not-relevant.

What do you think?

Baseball's worst players...

Dayn Perry (Yes, he's a hack. We can still discuss the hackery he puts out.) has a new column out in which he picks his worst starting player at each position (not including pitcher/DH). Interesting is the fact that two former Cubs appear on this list. For the full article, go here:

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/7737168/Position-by-position-look-at-MLB's-worst

While I can't respect most of what Perry puts out, I will give him kudos for recognizing what the Brewers apparently could not, that Jason Kendall is going to get SLAUGHTERED, both offensively and defensively.

Also, does Juan Pierre deserve the "nod" at left field? Not sure who off the top of my head would be worse, though.

Just a tad OT: Padres say Prior could be ready by May...

Read the entire article here: http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/7744864/Padres-will-take-it-slow-with-injury-prone-Prior

Hmm. Seems Senor(ita) Prior has magically managed to shrink his timetable. This could be a couple things: The Padres could be simply overestimating the rate of recovery for Prior, or Prior himself could possibly not have been as hurt as he'd been letting on. Personally I think it's the former, but if Prior actually was dragging his heals on his injury simply to spite the Cubs last year, I'd be somewhat peeved.

But, all in all, I'm rooting for him to be pitching by May. Perhaps I've decided to take the high road, wish Mark all the best at his new job, etc.....nahhhhh. My real reason? San Diego visits Wrigley May 12th-15th. How sweet would it be for Prior to make his first start for the Padres at Wrigley, only to be booed by the fans and shelled by the lineup?

OOOH, or better yet, DLee could charge the mound. Just tell him it's Chris Young pitching.

What can we get for Murton?

Obviously Matt Murton's time in Chicago is coming to an end. Multiple reports, most recently by SI.com's Jon Heyman, have the Padres and Rangers showing intrest in Murton. A Murton for Byrd swap has been bandied about, with variations on that trade. My question: What's his value? Who should the Cubs try to get in a Murton trade?

Personally, I'd hate to see Murton for Byrd. I think Sam Fuld/Daryle Ward can adequately do anything Byrd can do. What about packaging Murton in some way for Khalil Greene? It's been rumored that he wants out of San Diego.

Thoughts?

Dayn Perry over at FoxSports.com has a new article up comparing the Cubs and Brewers:

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/7635010

He gives the Cubs the edge overall, saying that while Milwaukee has the edge in the lineup, almost every other catagory (starting pitching, defense, bullpen and bench) are wins for the Cubs.

He also compares the starting lineups by position. It's here that Perry loses credit. Prince Fielder over D-Lee? Ryan "E5" Braun over A-Ram? 'Dome simply a "Push" against Corey Hart? Please. At least he didn't say Joe Dillon is better than Alfonso in left.

Your thoughts? Perry does give the Cubbies the edge almost everywhere else, is that justified?
