According to the Salt Lake Tribune we may be preparing an offer for restricted free agent Power Forward Paul Milsap. Link Here

This might not be a bad idea but Utah will have the last say. I can honestly say I don't know much about this guy. Anyone know what kinda character he has or how is work ethic is?? We are approximately 11 million dollars under the salary cap. Thoughts??

Trade Idea: Ryan Howard!

I was thinking about some trade ideas today and Ryan Howard came to mind. The Phillies have an abundance of Major League youngsters who are arb eligible(10 in all). A good PROBLEM to have.

Ryan Howard won in arbitration last year and got a whopping 10 Million dollar award. Jayson Starks reports he may ask for 15+ this year. I think he may come close to getting it. This says he is still eligible for 2 more years after this one

All said the Phillies have never had a bigger payroll than 103 million from what I see. Will they sign all players, address other needs, and raise payroll that high?? I've read rumblings of the Phillies exploring trades for their big slugging 1st baseman in the past.

With all that being said what would it take to get Howard? What about a Lee, Marshall, and a couple prospects for him? Lee would cost them 2yr/26 million, the others would be relatively cheap for them. They would be getting salary relief and a gold glove caliber 1b that hits for descent avg for 2 yrs. I think they could handle the loss of power with that lineup they have. They would surely gain avg and defense with Lee over Howard.

It would all hinge on Lee waiving his no trade clause and thats anyone's guess if he would or wouldnt.

We would get a monster lefty in the middle of our lineup all the while getting younger. Can you imagine Bradley,Ramirez,Howard in the middle of a lineup that also contains Soriano and Soto? WOW!! Just the thought of it gives me chills.

The move this year would only cost us about 2-3 million more if he got what he wanted in arbitration.

This might be a crazy idea but I think its at least a little feasible given the Phillies abundance of young mlb arbitration cases that will seemingly haunt them for years to come.

Thoughts,Reaction, Other Ideas???

My 2009 Cubs Roster!!!

Ok wanted to put out a few opinions on next year's roster and why. I will start with posting what the roster looks like now.

SP: Zambrano

        Lilly

        Dempster

         Harden

         Marquis

This is in no certain order but as of right now we head into the season set although I think there are gonna be injury concerns to deal with. Marshall,Guzman etc. can step in for now. I want Peavy badly but it isn't gonna happen I don't think.

Bullpen: Marmol, Gregg, Cotts, Wuertz,Shark,Marshall, and Hart or Guzman.

Not sure how many pitchers we will carry but as of right now looks like this is gonna be what we go with. I want Beimel pretty badly and I think we need him but looks like I'm the only one.

Lineup: Soriano(guess we have to deal with it huh?)

Lee(this is where I want him)

               Soto(yes,no,Maybe?)

               Ramirez

               Dome

               Dero

               Pie or Reed

               Theriot

Bench: Koyie Hill, Fontenot, Cedeno, Hoffpower,Reed, and a FA.

I don't think we have the money to have Blanco back. I like Henry but he isnt worth anymore than the minimum at this point and sure not a multiyear deal. I think someone like a Detroit gives him a 2 yr deal at 3-5 million.

As of right now it looks like we have 24 locks and 1 spot open depending on how many pitchers we carry. I'm all for the signing of Millar to take the last spot. I don't think the central will be near as competitive this year as last(I may be wrong). I think we would be dumb to sign a Dunn,Bradley, or Abreu to a 2-3 year deal worth big bux at this point given their injury concerns, defensive liabilities etc. Once in for all lets throw Pie out there and see what happens. I'm not a big fan but lets find out one way or another. I really think Dome will bounce back big. I think as a whole the players have gotta play smarter baseball i.e. baserunning, getting runners over, etc. That by itself could be the biggest offseason aqcuistion of them all.

As far as Hermida(my #1 choice) goes I'm all for it as well but I highly doubt he will be dealt for anything less than every bit of cheap young pitching we have i.e. marmol, marshall etc. If we can't get Millar I wouldnt mind having Edmonds back on a cheap 1yr deal.

We've debated Marquis many times on this blog and it looks more and more like were gonna be stuck with him whether we like it or not. I dont think we have any money to spend big and that may be a good thing. Maybe the deadline will bring us a jewel and/or we hold onto some cash in case of a catastrophic injury that we dont foresee.

"Realistic" thoughts please?

Day 2 Winter Meetings Thread!!

Just thought I would make a fresh diary for all the Winter Meetings Updates and Hot Stove Talk. The other threads were getting pretty diluted down. Heres is Rosenthal's latest on what's going on at the meetings. Here is the latest from mlb.com's blog.

Here are a few of my non-Peavy thoughts as of right now: Seems like we are dead set on signing one of the FA Lefty Boppers. I've though about this and looked over the numbers long and hard. We all know each of them have flaws ie defensive, age, contract number etc. I don't think Hermida is gonna be traded and I think thats most all of ours consensus #1 choice. With that being said I've made my decision out of the choices. I think I'm gonna root for Ibanez to be signed if its gotta be that away. I dont want Milton Bradley whatsoever at all.

As far as Randy Johnson goes I don't think he's leaving the west coast under almost any circumstance.

I'm anxiously waiting on some Cubbie deals!!! Thoughts??

Thought I would start a 2008 winter meetings thread in lue of tomorrow. maybe we can use this for all transactions and gossip. Just read tonight that there has been a possible trade involving the Reds and White Sux. Reds getting Jermaine Dye and the the White Sux receiving Homer Bailey. If so I gotta believe Kenny Williams clearly won this deal with the addition of a young stud caliber pitcher under control until 2013.

As far as the Cubs go Cubs.com has a preview in which you can read here!

Hopefully tommorrow's a big day for us with Ronnie Santo going into the Hall of fame and us finally getting our LH Outfielder whomever that may be. After that I believe the pieces will start to fall into place. Good Luck Jim Hendry make us proud!
