For the SciFi/Horror readers AND football fans

I've read two of this guys books and this new one that's out sounds like it would be pretty cool.
I give high marks to "Infected" and "Contagious". They are both very unique and fairly disturbing. Awesome!
The following synopsis can be found on the website, but I've included it here.
" Set in a lethal pro football league 700 years in the future, THE ROOKIE is a story that combines the intense gridiron action of "Any Given Sunday" with the space opera style of "Star Wars" and the criminal underworld of "The Godfather."

Aliens and humans alike play positions based on physiology, creating receivers that jump 25 feet into the air, linemen that bench-press 1,200 pounds, and linebackers that literally want to eat you. Organized crime runs every franchise, games are fixed and rival players are assassinated.

Follow the story of Quentin Barnes, a 19-year-old quarterback prodigy that has been raised all his life to hate, and kill, those aliens. Quentin must deal with his racism and learn to lead, or he'll wind up just another stat in the column marked "killed on the field."

If this is true (and it makes a little sense), then perhaps the talk and rumors of the Jaguars moving to Los Angeles could be silenced forever. But, we all know that the Jaguars will always have it's share of media detractors because of current market size and whatnot. Let the opinions begin... again!

State lottery & Jaguars?

To be honest, this thought never crossed my mind. I'm not sure of what the actual financial gains could possibly be, but perhaps someone out there knows the facts. I, for one, would be glad to buy Jaguar themed lottery tickets if some of that revenue was shared with the team. I know the lottery gains are supposed to be for the education system, so I'm running on empty as to how this works.

In any case, read further to see what's going on these days and let's talk about this idea specifically (trying not to go TOO far off topic. HaHa)

From SI.com right here...

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) -- Hail to the Redskins -- especially if that scratch-off is a winner.

The Redskins on Friday became the second NFL team to announce a partnership with a state lottery, taking advantage of a new league rule designed to bring in more revenue during a weak economy.

The Virginia Lottery will issue Redskins-themed scratch-off tickets for the 2009 season. The tickets will be sold only in Virginia.

"We envision a game that will link lottery fans with the Redskins in new and exciting ways," Redskins chief operating officer Mitch Gershman said.

Breaking from a strict policy that deterred any association with gambling, NFL owners voted Wednesday to allow teams to sign licensing deals with state-sponsored lotteries. The New England Patriots became the first team to announce such an agreement Thursday.

The Redskins had been in negotiations with the Virginia Lottery in anticipation of the owners' vote. Several other NFL teams are considering lottery deals.

Interest in Pashos? From CBS Sports

Interest in Pashos? From CBS Sports

If I were working for the Redskins, I would call Jacksonville about the availability of right offensive tackle Tony Pashos.

The Redskins' offensive line is a mess. It's old and injury prone, making the prospect of a successful 2009 season seem unlikely. Worse, there are no signs of finding reinforcements in the preseason. Jacksonville signed former Eagle Tra Thomas this offseason to be the starter at left tackle, then drafted two more tackles in the first two rounds -- Eugene Monroe and Eben Britton. They now have three tackles besides Pashos who are locks to make the team.

Even though Pashos has been a starter, he does have limitations in his athletic ability and the type of protection schemes the offense must run. Were this the Redskins' offense of old under Joe Gibbs featuring mostly slide protection, Pashos would fit perfectly. Pashos is the kind of player that 'Skins offensive line guru Joe Bugel would love -- tough, gritty, hard working and willing to do whatever he needs to be successful. The 'Skins can't feel that current right tackle Jon Jansen can play in all 16 games from an injury and performance standpoint. They must find an alternative, and I doubt it will be former Buffalo Bills first rounder Mike Williams of Texas.

Community Mock Draft Follow Up

So, how did everyone fare on the community mock draft we held? I know I missed the mark when I picked Max Unger for the Steeler's 32nd pick of the day. It seems this draft is about average in the fact that there were the draft day trades, surprise picks (unless you're a Raiders fan), and an occasional "WTF, over?!".

All I hope for now is that we get our rookies signed and into camp on time this year. We can speculate about hold-outs, but I'm pretty much freaking done with the crystal ball business, you know what I mean?

I can't wait until training camp competition starts up this year!

(as a side note, can someone post Mel Kiper's last mock draft? I'm curious as to how close/far off this toupe' schmuck was to the real product. thanks!)

BCC Mock Draft: With the thirty second selection, the Pittsburgh Steelers select Max Unger, Offensive lineman from Oregon

Having depth and age issues on both offensive and defensive lines, we selected Max Unger for reasons we believe to be worthy of a first round pick and to enhance our team in a myriad of positive ways in the future. With a few other linemen being considered, such as Alex Mack, William Beatty, and defensive players Jarron Gilbert and Darius Butler, we felt that our choice was still the best available player.

We feel his versatility in playing numerous positions on the offensive line, which included left tackle, guard, and center, would give us a durable and stout player for many, many years. The value of such a multi-talented player is something we could not pass on. His size, solid technique skills, toughness, and leadership qualities on and off the field have made him a superb fit with the team and the character of the Steeler’s organization.

Good ol' Vic Ketchman has written one of THE funniest replies to a question that I have ever seen.

From Jaguars.com:

Brandon from Starkville, MS
I’m beginning to feel like we're cheating with these great workouts. Are we really at that much of an innovative advantage?

Vic: It’s all about balls, Brandon. I asked Luke Richesson if he had enough balls and he told me he had 90 balls. I’ve done some research and I’ve found that some teams have more balls, and some teams, believe it or not, have no balls.
