I think athletically, it will be the most athletic team that we’ve probably had," Karl said after a light practice Friday. "In the same sense, you need brains, you need fundamentals and you need execution. The youth of the team is refreshing, but there’s also some growing pains that come with youthful players.
George Karl, replying to a question about the makeup of his team with the recent addition of Javale McGee. I almost laughed out loud when I read it.
Jamison Insists Players More Unified Than in '98
This is a bad sign. Jamison is one of the few active NBA players who remembers the last lockout. This leads me to believe that we could be in for the long haul.

Oops! Miami Herald Accidentally Posts Ad Celebrating Heat Championship
This is hilarious! I'm so happy today, and it keeps getting better and better!
DeShawn Stevenson's Last Laugh
As many of you who have followed this blog for awhile know, I have always defended DeShawn Stevenson during his feud with LeBron James. I was very curious when the feud first became known back in 2008. During a game with Cleveland back on March 13 of that year, it was clear watching the game that DeShawn was talking a lot of smack with the so-called "King". My first thought was, "what is DeShawn thinking? Does he really want to poke at sleeping giants? After all, he might have to face him again in the playoffs!" I think most fans thought the same thing at the time.

The Worst Owner in the NBA
I read this today and it blew my mind. I can't believe that an NBA owner would do such a thing. Thank God we have Ted! Can you imagine Ted doing something like this? Seriously?
Frank Hanrahan - Saunders Has Lost Wizards
I think Hanrahan makes some really good points. Although I'm not ready to give up on Flip yet, I am starting to believe that he isn't doing enough to keep this team motivated.
Breakdown of Lazy Blatche's Terrible Defense
Someone on another blog just pointed this out to me. It's a couple of weeks old, but it perfectly demonstrates how lazy and uninvolved Andray Blatche can sometimes be. We saw a lot of recurrences of that version of Blatche in the Raptors game last Wednesday.
Wizards Forced to Watch Film of Their Embarrassing Loss to the Raptors
Flip forces his team to watch the film of the Raptors loss, and offers his criticism throughout. Some players had their feelings hurt from the criticism. NICE!
John Wall - The Person
The best profile I have yet to read on John Wall's life, struggles, character, and personality. A good read that I highly recommend.
Salary Cap Question
I have some questions for those of you who consider yourselves experts on understanding the collective bargaining agreement and how the salary cap works. My questions revolve around the NBA Salary Cap FAQ questions #29 - 32. Basically, I want to know what the Wizards options are with pursuing a big name free agent and still resigning our own free agents like Josh Howard, Mike Miller, Shaun Livingston, and James Singleton.
I Hate JaVale McGee
There, I said it. This guy pisses me off more than any other player on this team, even more than Earl Boykins. He is so incredibly stupid, I can only describe him in Charles Barkley/Bill Walton-style hyperbole. JaVale McGee is the dumbest player in the history of civilization.
Mike Jones: Wizards Still Waiting On Young
Mike Jones (who?) writes about Nick Young's struggles in his new job working for Comcast SportsNet.
Flip Saunder's Offense
Some posters have questioned whether or not Flip Saunders deserves any credit for the revival of our team's play these past 4 games. They cite the fact that Flip Saunders has simplified his offense so as to not overwhelm the new players. But does that mean that Flip isn't calling any plays? That he doesn't do anything when the Wizards are on offense other than act as a cheerleader?
Also, the Wizards don't want to move Miller and would like to re-sign him after this season.
From Michael Lee, via Wizards Insider. I found this to be the most interesting part of the blog post.
One Small Nugget of Sunshine
The newest Mavericks played absolutely terrible last night, making me smile just a little bit that they are no longer on our team. Don't get me wrong, I do wish them all well, but I do feel better that they are no longer playing this badly for us. Consider:

"Well, he doesn't play for me. He plays for the coach, so I'm not reacting to those situations at all," Grunfeld said. "He is under contract, and if he wants to get paid, he has to play. I don't have much reaction about that situation."
This is now my favorite team. Forget changing the name back to the Bullets. Might I suggest the Halos? Or perhaps the Atoms? God help us. The fallout will take years to recover from.
Wilbon Joins the "Blow it Up" Bandwagon
The most interesting part of the article to me is this:
Yes, this even means moving the players you like, the absolute professionals who could easily wind up helping playoff teams elsewhere. Multiple teams want Antawn Jamison. Multiple teams want Butler. They're assets. Their new coaches and their new teammates are going to love them.
Flip Should Start a Defense-First Lineup
Flip should make a statement in the next game, to show everybody that his post-game rant was serious. He should bench the "Big" 3 and make it clear that if you want on the court, you'll have to earn it by playing defense.
"If I thought I was doing a poor job and I thought maybe we should have been better, maybe it would have been different," Jordan said. "But we were not on the same page and this is not the team that everyone thinks it should be. If you’re going to do it for marketing, for fans, and for the media, that’s for the wrong things. Be honest and be sincere about where you are as a team. And as an organization. So it didn’t happen. And that’s how I feel about it."
...
Jordan was asked if he believes Arenas can be the leader that Flip Saunders needs him to be for this team succeed, and he didn't exactly give him an endorsement. . ."He’s capable of leading them in scoring and he’s capable of leading them in having a presence that’s very competitive and that’s very contagious," Jordan said. "I don’t know if he can be a leader -- I just don’t know that, I’m not saying he can’t be, I just don’t know if he can be."
Eddie Jordan discussing the Wizards both this season and last.
To clarify, the first quote was about the Wizards last season, while the second one about Gilbert was concerning his potential as a leader now. I have to say, I partially agree with Eddie on the first quote, and fully agree with him on the second.
Are We Really This Bad?
I'm being serious. Before the season started, I thought we might win 50 games. Now I think we might be lucky to get 30. We've lost 6 straight games. Some of those were to good teams, some of those were to not so good teams. We've played good, we've played bad, but we were never good enough to win. Is this team overrated?
Honestly, I'm starting to think so. At the very least, we are proving that we cannot win without one of our Big 3 being out. The Celtics last season pushed the Magic to 7 games in the second round of the playoffs without KG. Without Caron or Antawn, I doubt we even make the playoffs. So we either need to reconsider our team or pray for perfect health going into the post-season. That thought is very depressing for me.
Excerpts From Tim Donaghy's New Book
I'm surprised that nobody has linked to this yet. I've been hearing about it nonstop for the past two days. Even though Donaghy has no credibility, I believe him because he is confirming what I have suspected for a long time. He also gives very specific details that would take a lot of creativity to make up.
On a related note, if anybody saw that play two nights ago where LeBron James barreled into Chris Bosh late in the 4th quarter, while the Cavs were attempting a furious comeback, and saw it get called a blocking foul on Bosh, then like me you would have to agree that there is such a thing in the NBA as star treatment. Bosh had positioned himself early and had textbook footwork on the play, and he was clearly outside of the no-charge semi-circle. No matter, the refs gave the call to the NBA's golden boy. David Stern ought to be ashamed of himself.
Who Do We Deactivate?
/Ed. Note: Bumped to the front page because its an excellent question that we really haven't examined yet. In fact, the question is so good that I already pre-wrote tomorrow's Pollin' on the same subject. But because timing is everything, cuppettcj gets the front page honors. You can catch my planned post after the jump. -Jake]
Assuming complete health and no other off-season moves, the Wizards will go into the 2009-10 season with 14 players, all of which, except for Mike James, could contribute to the team if given the chance, in my opinion. But NBA rules only allow for 12 active players. Other than Mike James, who I assume we are all in agreement about, what other player should the Wizards deactivate?
For the record, my vote is for DeShawn Stevenson. Unlike CJHutch, I actually like the dude, but I just don't see him beating out Nick Young for the role of 5th guard. What do you guys think?
The Silver Lining of the Salary Cap Cloud
This should make morethesamewiz very happy. It details all of the ways teams like the Wizards will benefit financially from the league's financial shortfalls.
ESPN's Chris Broussard explains how the salary cap and luxury tax threshold projections for 2010-11 will seriously dampen what was originally expected to be a very hot free agent market in the summer of 2010.
My Second Trade Idea - You All are Going to Hate This
Now that I have a better understanding of what the salary situation is going to be for the 2010-11 season, I now realize that any trade Ernie does between now and this upcoming season's trade deadline will primarily be for clearing salary space for 2010-11. My first trade idea for DeSagana Diop simply will not work, unless Abe decides to go into the luxury tax again for that season, because I based that idea on the wrong assumption that the ShamSports salary total for the Wizards in 2010-11 included the qualifying offers for Randy Foye ($4,795,096) and Dominic McGuire ($1,060,120). Once I discovered that it does not, I then realized that the Wizards still lack enough salary flexibility to resign Brendan Haywood, Mike Miller or Randy Foye (one or the other, not both), and still remain under the luxury tax threshold. So if we do not do a trade similar to one of the ideas I am about to propose, we can either kiss both Mike Miller and Randy Foye goodbye after this season, or Brendan Haywood. Since I think it is important that we lock in our starters for 2010-11, I decided to see what Ernie might think of to remedy this situation.
My First Trade Idea - Foye, Stevenson, James for Diop, Bell
This FanPost is my first idea on what kind of deal Ernie might have up his sleeve to account for the salary situation next season. In case you haven't read what this situation is all about, check out this post and the replies to it. In a nutshell, this trade is mostly about three things: obtaining a serviceable backup center to play behind Haywood, getting value for either Mike Miller or Randy Foye before one of them walks away in free agency, and maintaining enough salary space under the luxury tax threshold so that we can still resign Brendan Haywood in the 2010 offseason.

So Who Starts at Shooting Guard
I've seen both NBA analysts and members here assume two different things about the roles of our two new guards. I'm curious what the overall consensus is. My assumption is that because Miller's game is such a good fit with Arenas's, that he will be the starter and that Foye will be the first man off of the bench (Sixth Man).
Gilbert Arenas: The Guy Who Signed the $111 Million Contract
An old article I stumbled across while trying to get an update on Gilbert's knee. A pretty harsh indictment leveled against Gil. The comments were just as brutal.
What I don't understand is this: if Gilbert is fully healthy, then why doesn't he play? If he's not fully healthy, then what's the problem? How can his knee still be bothering him after all this time?
Etan Thomas Due a $2 Million Kicker if Traded?
According to the Chicago Sun-Times:
Contrary to reports elsewhere, the Bulls have no interest in taking back Washington center Etan Thomas in a trade for Larry Hughes. The Bulls like Thomas - just not the extra $2 million kicker to the $7 million annual salary he is due by contract if traded. Guard Mike James ($6 million per season) also was rumored to be in the Wizards' package for Hughes, who is due $13.5 million next season.
What is this "kicker" that is being referred to? This is the first time I have read about this. Can someone please explain to me what this means?
This is probably why we can't unload Etan despite his expiring contract. Ernie is starting to look a lot less smart than I previously gave him credit for.
