McCovey Chronicles Beltran, Rasmus or Upton

If you had to pick one, which would you choose - Beltran, Rasmus or Upton?

Each player has its ups and downs and we have all see the huge write ups here on McCovey Chronicles. Beltran is a rental but a beast. Rasmus is a head case but a young 5 tool guy. Upton has not proven jack squat but is a crazy "athlete" that might improve with a change of scenery.

So I ask all you folks, a very simple question, with just one word answer:

Choose 1 - Beltran, Rasmus or Upton?

**** I will update this post as I get responses via twitter. So far:

Henry Schulman  Rasmus. RT  pick 1 - beltran, rasmus or upton.

Golden State Of Mind Best trade partner- Utah Jazz

Monta this monta that. The world on whether the warriors will trade monta or keep him is totally shaken up. But for just a moment, imagine that the warriors wil trade monta. It seems that the Utah Jazz are the best trade partner. The Jazz front court now has Kanter, Milsap, Al Jefferson, and Favors. They only have devin harris as a backcourt piece.

Why not try to trade Monta for Milsap or Al Jefferson?

McCovey Chronicles Cantu

Giants in need for a bat, blah blah blah. Everyone knows here that the giants want one more bat for this post season run. So I will throw out another name and see what you all think. Jorge Cantu.

Funny the marlins seems to be listening to offers for him, the giants need a bat, and they happen to be in SF playing the giants. Hmmm.

Also, this reporting from Jayson Stark's twitter:

@jaysonst   "#Marlins & #Rangers aren't as far along on Jorge Cantu as advertised. Fla not in sell mode but still shopping Cantu to Tex, Col & SF #trades via web"

Do we want this guy? Seems like hes having a down year but im willing to kick-the-tires-sabes-style

McCovey Chronicles Should Giants look at Werth?

Not sure if this has been discussed already at McCovey Chronicles, but recently read that Jayson Werth is available by the Phillys. Do you guys think that Werth is the bat that we need to make that final run at the playoffs? I'd prefer Prince but his long term deal plus minor slobbyness doesnt help so Jayson Werth seems like a good alternative.

From Rotoworld.com-

"Buster Olney and Jayson Stark of ESPN.com hear that the Rays are involved in discussions for Phillies' outfielder Jayson Werth. According to Olney, the Phillies are working "very, very aggressively" to move Werth. Freeing themselves of his contract would allow the Phillies to add more payroll, possibly in the form of Astros' right-hander Roy Oswalt."

What do you all think about the Giants trading for Werth? Who would you be willing to give for him?

Golden State Of Mind Warriors sold for 450 Million NOT Ellison

Its not Ellison. its Lacob with the winner. CNBC reports that the warriors have been sold for 450 Million to Jacob Lacob.

http://www.cnbc.com/id/38262946

Joe Lacob, managing director and partner at private equity firm Kleiner Perkins, and Peter Guber, chairman of Mandalay Entertainment, have won the bid for the NBA's Golden State Warriors, a source close to the sale has told CNBC.

The price for the team is $450 million, beating the previous NBA record—$401 million, which was the amount Robert Sarver paid for the Phoenix Suns in 2004.

Lacob and Guber beat out rival bidder Larry Ellison, chief executive officer of Oracle.

The sale was brokered by Galatioto Sports Partners, which has been involved in the recent sale of the Charlotte Bobcats and Chicago Cubs.

The Warriors franchise, which was bought by Chris Cohan in 1995 for $119 million, was valued at $315 million by Forbes in December of last year, but the Warriors' location in the Bay area undoubtedly added more interest and thus a higher price.

Mark Mastrov, founder of 24-Hour Fitness, was also considered a top competitor for the team.

The only formality is for the league’s Board of Governors to approve the new owners. That potentially could come quickly, given the fact that NBA owners are currently having their meetings in Las Vegas this week.

Darren Rovell
CNBC Sports
Business Reporter

The Warriors on-the-court performance obviously didn’t have much bearing on the sale. Since Cohan bought the team 16 years ago, the team has had the second worst record in the league (behind the Los Angeles Clippers) over that time span.

Despite the fact that NBA commissioner David Stern has estimated that the league’s teams will lose $370 million from this past season, and the potential for a work stoppage after next season, the league recently has benefited from attracting the world’s richest to buy its teams. Russia’s richest man Mikhail Prokhorov was approved as owner of the New Jersey Nets in May.

McCovey Chronicles Gerald Posey Called Up

in an Twitter post late Friday night, baggs said: "RT @extrabaggs: Unconfirmed, but source tells me Giants will call up Buster Posey prior to tomorrow night's game. http://bit.ly/bGKdVg" This info, along with ESPN's random news that Posey was on his way up soon leads me to believe that Gerald "Buster" Demp Posey III has been called up to the bigs and will crack Saturday nights starting lineup. Just what the dr ordered for the holliday. I'll have a weekend please. Make it a three day. Gigantes

Golden State Of Mind Greg Monroe from Hoya Fans

Taking the idea from my boy fooch at ninersnation.com, I asked the folks at SB Nation Blog "Casual Hoya" their thoughts on Greg Monroe from their perspective. Its interesting because they watched him every day and probably know him best. Here are the responses I got....Take what you want from this but I think it would be great to do this for the 5 or so guys we could take with the #6 pick....

  No problem

Monroe will be a good pro. I’m a big believer that if you excel at one thing, you will be a good pro. In Monroe’s case, it is passing. He sees the floor about as well as any person I’ve ever watched, point guards included. He would fit in well with Nellie’s run-n-gun style offense. He also will be unselfish enough to dish to Curry and Ellis, and his ability to play at the top of the key will help stretch a defense, creating room for Ellis and Curry to slash without fear of a big man.

At the same time, the Warriors already have two skinny big men lefties in Brandan Wright and Anthony Randolph, so it seems like a bit of an odd choice. Wright has been a disappointment, but I always read that Randolph is one of the most explosive players in the league. Not sure how they all fit, maybe Monroe and Randolph would complement one another?

Motivation Argument

He gets dinged all the time for being too passive and lacking motivation. I think those arguments are poppycock. He is not going to be a Kobe, Durant, LeBron type player so there will be no need for him to “take over the game,” in the NBA, something that idiot analysts like Gottlieb consistently harped on. despite the fact Monroe won Georgetown many games over the season.

In a situation where he is a role player on a team, I think he will excel. Double/double, 4-5 assists, 2-3 block type numbers.

His problem will be on defense when he gets pulled out of the paint by taller and quicker opponents. He isn’t quick but has good footwork.

He doesn’t have the hype Cousins and Favors have, but he also doesn’t have the bust potential that comes with those types of players. Monroe is fundamentally a great all-around basketball player, something that does not get enough credit in the score-first NBA.

Good talk.

This year he was very good on the defensive glass

Something that I thought was overlooked. There were several teams who just could not get a rebound because greg was swallowing up everything. I thought his rebounding was his biggest improvement over his rookie year. Good hands, but turnover prone b/c of desicion making.

Solid post defender. Gave fits to everyone who tried to post on him, but not as good on the permiter and not a help side shot blocker type.

by bunk moreland on May 21, 2010 1:51 PM EDT reply actions

Not the best fit

for two reasons. Dont see Monroe excelling in a fast break only offense because speed is not his stength. secondly, his strength is his passing, and the warriors do precious little of it. As far as i can tell, everytime Ellis gets the ball, it’s the last time someone on his team touches it until a rebound. Monroe will excell on a team of players like him, unselfish…not the Warriors.

Casual Hoya Greg Monroe Analysis from Warriors Fan

Golden State Warriors fan here. Lots of people have the warriors drafting Greg Monroe with the #6 overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft. Would love to ask you all, who watched Monroe more than anyone in the country. Now that Monroe has left the hoyas for the NBA, what is your final analysis of big Greg Monroe? Will he be a good pro? How about fit with the warriors? Any inside info and perspective welcomed. Thanks ahead of time

Niners Nation OSI? Yes Please

Check out this recent news from rotoworld.com

"The Giants will reportedly be willing to shop Osi Umenyiora on draft day if they select Jason Pierre-Paul with the 15th overall pick. Umenyiora "can be had for the right price," according to Mike Lombardi of the National Football Post. Though Umenyiora is coming off a poor season, he is due manageable money over the life of his contract and could probably use a change of scenery. He may also be available for as little as a mid-round pick."

Am I crazy for thinking the niners should go after his immediately? Why would this guy come so cheap now? Im confused. Help me niners fans....

Niners Nation What is Wrong With B.Marshall?

what is wrong with brandon marshall that i cant see? Why wouldnt any team gamble and trade their first round pick for him? Lets all close our eyes and forget about our  niners for a second. Brandon Marshall is one of the top young WR out there. The guy is just getting his career started and has proven overall several years already that hes a legit annual pro bowl player. He's a true #1 wr and from everything I have read, he can be had for a first round draft pick.

From todays ESPN.com insider

"Top 5 players likely to be traded: Brandon Marshall--A lot more speculation than activity has surrounded Marshall, but that soon could change. Denver has been adamant that it won't take less than a first-round pick. Seattle, the only team to bring in Marshall, has been adamant that it won't give up a first-round pick. But anyone who does can have one of the game's top young players."

yes this has been discussed at nauseam on this site but with the draft around the corner its worht bringing up again. So now think about our niners. Is another wr our biggest need? Absolutely not. Could we really use both of our 1st round picks for other positions we actually NEED, certainly. But think about value here. Would you prefer a second tier OT or G that drops to the middle of the first round or would you rather a proven offensive commodity like Brandon Marshall? What is the percent of mid round players becomes probowlers? Low right? I think BM (insert BM joke here) would thrive under coach sing who has absolute control over his players. He would fit nicely opposite crabs and be another weapon for mr alex smith. We would still have a first round pick to use for a position of need, and we can focus on the rest of the draft to get what we want.

so please niner nation, explain to me why you would prefer to use one of our 2 first round draft picks on a guy who's not certain to make a serious impact in a nfl uni vs a proven pro bowl young WR?

Golden State Of Mind Cohan officially puts GSW up for sale

Might as well move this to the front page, as its more important than anything else going on in Warrior land.

Information from a recent article on www.sportsbusinessjournal.com, states that Chris Cohan has officially put the golden state warriors up for sale.

The article, which you can find here (http://www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/article/65126) says that Cohan "retained Galatioto Sports Partners to help sell the franchise." "Cohan bought the Warriors in 1995 for $119 million..." while just recently, the Bobcats just sold for $275 million." "“It has the potential to go over $400 million if there is a bidding war,” Ganis said"

Its happening. Its really happening. "Warriors- Its a great Timeout!"

(Pray for Ellison)

Niners Nation Rex Ryan

Rex Ryan is one cocky xxxxxxxx and someone needs to put in him in his place fast. After niners file tampering charge vs. Jets, Coach Rex Ryan says: "I think its ridiculous. Wish we were playing them (49ers)."

This really makes me mad. I love that a coach has confidence in his players. What I think is uncalled for is calling out our team and saying " I wish we were playing them." Listen Slob/Coach Ryan, your team isnt that good. Yes your D looks nasty but that Offense is not going to cut it.

Add coach Rex Ryand the NYJ to the niners most hated list. If only we could play them and "hit them in the mouth."

Go Niners

Daily Norseman Bernard Berrian Status/Value

First time at the Daily Norseman. Thought that this was the perfect place to ask this question. Trying to determine Bernard Berrian's value for todays game. I know he is no longer on the injury report and practiced all week long. However, last week he played the entire game and only was looked to twice from Mr. Favre. Do you guys think he will have any success in todays game? Or the Vikes be up so much that they pound the rock with AP for the majority of the game? ... Ultimately what I am trying to say is...

Do I start Bernard Berrian today in my fantasy football league? Come on guys help a brother out. Thanks and GL today.

Niners Nation New Niners Jersey

Trying to figure out which new 49er jersey I should get. The obvious answer would be Patrick Willis which I am very close to doing. However, getting a defensive player's jersey has never been my forte. What about a nice #21 Gore jersey instead? I think his number on the new uni looks sick. Heres my question:

Which 49er jersey should I get? Also, any recommendations on a place to buy them in the city of SF? I dont like the idea of buying something like a jersey online without trying it on. Help a niner fan out.  Need to get one before the first preseason game. Thanks

McCovey Chronicles 3-7 after ASB a good thing for Giants?

I wanted to throw out this idea which I know initially will turn some people away but hear me out.

While there is nothing worse than your favorite team losing 3-7 right after the AllStar Break to start the 2nd half of the season, maybe there is some silver lining.

Maybe this losing streak isnt a "good thing" per say but maybe it helps us in the long run. Maybe this 3-7 Road trip actually is a positive in that it forces the giants brass to stop drooling at our first half record and really see what type of anemic offensive team we have. For the entire first half, we were all blinded by our pitching and panda's rise to all most all star status. But now, it seems the giants negatives have become very clear very quickly and everyone is waiting to see how the giants react.  Rumors swirl around victor martinez (featured today 7/27 in ESPN's rumor central). But who knows whats legit and whats just heresay.

Regardless this 3-7 road trip came at perfect timing, right before the trade deadline. There is nothing we can do to take back our losing streak, only things we can do to avoid repeating it.

Wake up giants management. Its your move. And all of us will be watching

McCovey Chronicles Trading for a Right Handed Bat

I was watching sportscenter and after the giants vs brewers highlights were done, peter gammons said "the giants are dangerous and dont be suprised if sabean looks to aquire a big right handed bat."

With that said, who do you guys think are some realistic options for us via trade?

I would list off a few names off the top of my head but I know thats a rookie move that will result in extra roasting from the McCovey Chronicles veterans so I will leave the options up to you all. Hopefully we can get a realistic list going...thoughts?

Golden State Of Mind Finally Clarity in Warrior Land

Based on today's Don Nelsons comments , it seems that a few things have actually been resolved in Warrior land. Seems like a minor accomplishment but with all the recent insanity thats out there regarding this Amare trade, even an ounce of clarity seems like a wonderful thing.

Heres a list of what we now know for sure. Finally:

#1- Steph Curry will NOT be traded

#2- Stephen Jackson will move back to the 3 spot

#3- Don Nelson sees Curry as the future Point Guard

Here are some of the remaining unanswered questions:

#1- Will the Warriors still be able to complete a deal for Amare without Curry?

#2- Will Steph Curry start right away with Monta in the backcourt?

#3- Will Monta mind sliding back to the SG after all this PG talk went down this offseason?

#4- Would the warriors be able to sign Amare in the summer of 2010 if they dont land him this offseason?

Overall I am excited about the idea of having Curry on this team for years to come. The thought of trading the guy along with Beans etc. sounds crazy to me. I think Nelson and the management know that the warriors have the upper hand and that Amare will become a free agent after this season anyways. We have a young nucleus of that's very talented, plenty of cap space to sign a max free agent deal in 2010, and the coaching staff and front office that seem to be on the same page.  For the first time since I can remember, and god I hope someone is knocking on wood, I actually feel semi comfortable with the current mindset of the warriors front office (ducking...taking cover...).

Wow. Did I really just say that?

Go Warriors.

Golden State Of Mind Flynn Perspective From 'Cuse Fan

Have waited to make a post on the warriors and Flynn for a while now but figured with the draft close now was a good time. Just for reference, I have watched every Syracuse basketball game since 2002-2003 season when I started school attending Syracuse as an undergrad. Here is my take on Mr. Flynn and thoughts on the warriors taking him:

PROS: The guy has heart and as you all witnessed in the OT thriller when he blew up and became a name. He is a great point guard with tons of athleticism. He can jump out of the gym and everyone would be surprised with how high the guy can jump. He gets his teammates pumped up and seems to be a good leader not totally focused on his own stats.  He is super tough and probably one of the toughest small guys I have seen since AI. The guy throws his body around and seems to always get up for the next play

CONS: His defense is ok, not an amazing defender by any means other than being quick and stealing the ball. He sometimes takes plays off or disappears. This is what bothered me the most this past year. When Syracuse would be losing, you would almost forget that he was even out on the court.

OVERALL:. While I do not envision him becoming an all star (Carmelo Anthony) who takes over games,  I think the guy will be a solid NBA pick for another team (Bobby Jackson-esque), NOT the warriors. Why not the warriors? Because Jonny Flynn at the 1 and Monta at the 2 seems like a tiny tiny back court. With both guys on the floor, whos going to guard the opponents 2? I know nelly says that SJax will play the 2 and Nelly the 1 but I just think that ultimately Monta will be a better fit at off guard slot and I dont think that the SJAX at SG is our future. While I would still be happy to see my boy Jonny Flynn dressing in a warriors uni (bc I am a homer), I feel that there are much better fits out there for us at PG and hope we can select someone who can ultimately play alongside Monta for years to come.

If you all are interested in serious depth on most of the first round prospects, check out my boys write ups on CBS Sports.

Niners Nation Not to beat a dead horse...

Not to beat a dead horse...but word on the street is that the asking price for Boldin is now a second rounder. Doesn't it seem that a proven pro bowl caliber WR is worth a second round pick? Seems like his hard nosed attitude would fit with Coach Singletary. I know I KNOW. Tons of people have already posted this topic before but this new development seemed fanpost worthy. It might be hard to pry him from arizona considering we are an in division rival but for a second round pick? Seems like a no brainer to me. What do you all think? Do you think the niners should trade their second round pick for Boldin? Will they trade for Boldin?

Troy Nunes Is An Absolute Magician How do we stop Blake Griffin?

<!-- end mod-article-title --> <!-- begin story body -->

One question all of us are wondering-- how are we going to stop the beast that is known as Blake Griffin? I dont have an answer but I have an interesting article that discusses this...

From ESPN Insider--

" The Orange's 2-3 zone has battered shooters in the tourney, holding every opponent since UConn under 70 ppg, after giving up a 71.5 average for the season.

But if they expect it to work against Oklahoma in the Sweet 16, they're kidding themselves. Zones are red meat for Blake Griffin -- he's got 26 double-doubles this season, and against Michigan (the only other pure zone team the Sooners faced this season), Griffin took advantage on the glass, pulling down 17 boards. The 1-3-1 and 2-3 that the Wolverines threw at Griffin did nothing to stop his offensive efficiency, either. He still dropped 33 points on 14-for-20 shooting."

I feel the only way for us to contain him is by using Onuaku and Big Rick to pester him all night long. Body for body we should be able to stick with him im just worried about his athletic ability.

Niners Nation Roy Williams

"Roy Lee Williams (born August 14, 1980 in Redwood City, California) is an American football safety for the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League. He was originally drafted by the Cowboys eighth overall in the 2002 NFL Draft. He played college football at Oklahoma."

Thoughts on the Niners going after Dallas Cowboys saftey Roy Williams? Sources say hes being shopped by the cowboys and will most likely be dropped if there are no takers. Hes a bay area native so we have that going for us too...

Niners Nation Crabtree in a Niner Uniform

News just dropped that Michael Crabtree has a slight stress fracture in his foot and will be out "10 weeks and will not work out before the draft."

While I am never excited to see any player get hurt, this could be fantastic news for niners fans. Crabtree, who is by far the best WR talent in the draft and possibly the best overall offensive talent, was projected to be drafted in the top 3. But now that he wont participate in anything prior to the draft and a new injury to his foot could possibly scare teams resulting in him falling down draft boards.

Two questions to pose-

1. do you think Crabtree will slip down to #10?

2. if he does fall down draft boards from this injury, should the niners draft him?

I personally think it would be a no brainer for the niners to draft a talent like crabtree regardless of the injury, if he falls to us. Thoughts?

Niners Nation Sign Jeff Garcia AND Fred Taylor

I know this might sound a bit crazy and to be fully honest, i'm not 100% certain I want them to do this. BUT what if the Niners signed veteran qb Jeff Garcia and veteran rb Fred Taylor?

Below are my thoughts.

Jeff Garcia- a character guy, who's not flashy and wont get upset if we dont bomb the ball down the field all game long. He's good enough to lead the team and has a history with the franchise. While hes not a LONG TERM SOLUTION, he does fill our immediate need of a qb who could lead us to the playoffs. I would be willing to sign him ONLY if it were a short term deal and not something crazy expensive.

Fred Taylor- there were a few links I saw come through which stated that the niners were looking for a two headed ground attack. With this is mind, I think signing Fred Taylor could be a great move. He's familiar with sharing the touches and ok with a 2 headed running monster, which is what he has done the past however many years in Jax with Maurice Jones Drew. Hes not an ego guy and would be willing to let our boy frank gore take the majority of the work load. On top of it all, he's a veteran and would help contribute to a "pound the run"  offense considering the type that coach sing wants. Again I would be willing to sign him ONLY if it were a short term deal.

----

I think by adding these two veterans for short term deals, they could help boost the moral in the clubhouse, add veteran experience to a young team and help get the niners back in the mix for the playoffs.  Basically get us out of the gutter of the nfl and by the time their contracts expire, we are well on our way....

What do you all think and let me know why you agree or disagree.
