Porcello Optioned
Rick Porcello has been optioned down to AAA. A very curious move, although Detroit may have thought that they can do the same that they did to Scherzer. I still have faith in Porcello, though I think the Tigers did mess him up quite a bit. What do you guys see Porcello doing in the future? How long will it take for him to come back up? How well will he do in his first minor league action above A ball? Will the K's be there?
Old BA Books
By old, I mean 2000-2007. Does anyone have those that they are not using anymore? I read my prospect manuals as pleasure reads (yes, I am a total absolute nerd) and I know some of you are carrying them in the back of your bookshelves, never to be touched again. If you do have some, please either email me at caseywhitman@gmail.com or AIM me at cwhitman412, and I'll give you mailing addresses and stuff.
Thanks guys. I love you all.
Except a few.
First Third Of Season Regrades
The first two months of the season have gone by. Prospects have broken out, and others have busted. How do you guys feel about prospects this time of the season. We've done a few of these over the past two years, so let's do another. Suggest guys that are interesting, and see how other people rate them. This time I want more discussion on players. Please respond to the specific player with the grade, and rec the grade along with a +1 for grades you agree with. It would be a lot more organized if each player only received a grade once, with +1s AND recs indicating what you agree with.
And don't forget, start discussion on guys. I want to see this fanpost getting 500+ replies. At least.

Wagner Mateo Signs
With the Diamondbacks. for 512k. What a drop from his 3.1 million that he "signed" with St. Louis. All over a vision problem. Somebody tell that to Brian McCann. Anyways, I hope he does well to prove the Cardinals that they were idiots for what they did. He's still a stud athlete, and could be a bargain for Arizona soon.
Anyone else have any recent reports on him? What do you guys think? How high in the Arizona system do you think he can be?
The Cwhit Prospect Pack
So, I'm hoping on doing more of these, where I just talk about several prospects that I have my eye on, or are personal favorites. I'll put my analysis, scouting reports, and more.
Kyle Drabek as you know is a personal favorite of mine. Many people wrote him off last year due to his loss of K's at AA. I however didn't take that as a problem at all. 2009 was his first full season back from TJ surgery, and his first full season overall. He was still young for the level at AA, and he has great stuff. It may not be TOR sort of stuff, but he has a 55/60 FB and a Plus to Plus-plus curve. He also has the pedigree of being a first rounder (I mean, they were drafted there for a reason, right?) and being the son of a former Cy Young winner. This season he's back in AA, and the K's are back up. The only thing that concerns me is his control is the worst it's ever been. However, I still don't see any major issues for the future. I see an Oswalt comp.
Brayan Villarreal may not be a name most of you know, but I see him being borderline top 100 after this year. He's overshadowed by Crosby, Turner, and much less so, Oliver. By the end of the season he could be higher ranked than Oliver. His 46/10 K/bb ratio this year in 39 innings shows his dominance. His stuff is nasty with a mid 90's FB and as said by BA, the best slider in the organization. He's working on the changeup, but he looks like he could be a future closer if that doesn't work out.
Michael Pineda may be the breakout Seattle pitcher people are talking about this year, but Mauricio Robles is close behind him. At age 21, he's dominating AA. He's averaging almost 11 k/9 with his low 90's FB and power curve. BA says that he does not have much of a changeup, and if he develops up he can become a #4 or 5 starter. I however see his upside as higher than that, in the #3 range. Detroit will hate that they gave him up in the Washburn trade.
I know everyone loves when a personal favorite does extremely well. Jordan Pacheco was one of my super sleepers coming into this year. His numbers last year stood out in many odd ways. 13 homers, 12 SB, and under a 10% K rate stuck out immediately. Especially for a catcher. A catcher who had just converted from 2B the year before. He was 23 in low A ball, but the numbers still were gaudy for a newly converted catcher. If that wasn't enough, he's now hitting over 400 in 155 at bats. He also has 16/9 BB/k ratio. Yes, almost twice as many walks as strikeouts. Under 10 strikeouts in over 150 at bats. It is the Cal league, but this guy could be an extremely useful super-utility player in the next few years.
Texas has a scary good minor league system. The scariest part is it's been scary for three years now. And that includes graduates. Based on the sheer depth of their pitching, I see no way they can't have the deepest and best rotation and bullpen in the majors in a couple of years. Their low A pitching staff is averaging over one K per inning. That insane. The Hickory staff includes Joseph Wieland, Matt Thompson, Robbie Ross, Neil Ramirez, and Wilmer Font in the rotation. Robert Erlin and Braden Tullis are just two of the pitchers in their bullpen. Not one of those pitchers is over 21. If anyone can help with scouting reports that would be great, as I only know Wieland, Ross, Ramirez, and Font well. I'll be happy to state those in the replies if anyone wants. Thompson is extremely intriguing, and I've heard nothing but good things about Erlin and Tullis as well.
Weekly Gillies Watch: Yeah. Let's not talk about him so far. I spent a while trying to find a brightside to his season.
Read below the jump to see what I found.

Minor League Road Trip?
So, for my birthday my dad is going to take me to a couple of baseball games among other things. During memorial day weekend, we're either going to go to the Tampa area to see the Marlins/Rays/both or up to Boston and maybe down to NY to see the Red Sox/Yankees. My question is are there any minor league teams in those areas? I don't care what level, though I'd prefer for it not to be AAA.

System Aggressiveness Study
If I get time, I had an idea for a way of measuring how aggressive systems promote their minor leaguers. Basically, we compare as many players (i'm planning on doing the BA top 30) ages to the average age of the league they are in. We then average the numbers and then possibly put a factor in based on average age of the overall system. I'm planning on doing a test run with the Mets (very aggressive) and the Rays (very conservative) and see what happens. Any input?

Completed Winter Minor League Draft (12 Teams, 40 Rounds)
480 minor leaguers. All picked by twelve teams.
We started this draft Christmas, and other than one pick which needs to be fixed, we are completed. Check it out on this spreadsheet. I will continue updating it and another spreadsheet until all information is filled out. We will follow these teams until next winter, in which we can put all graduates on a list and we can drop whoever we want. We will then redraft to refill the roster.
Keep following along as it goes on.
http://www.mediafire.com/?jmmmhljavet
I will also keep the website open, so if anyone wants to come chat, they can. I'll be there every so often. Minor league chat is always fun!
Minor League Chat
So, I'm bored on this snowy night. So let's have a minor league chat. I have a chatbox on my draft site. Anyone who wants to come can. We'll discuss the BA rankings, sleepers, guys we think will bust, and many other things. Please use your forum name.
Site is http://epicminorfandraft.proboards.com/index.cgi
Come check it out!
We've already gotten 28 inches of snow, and there's another foot falling tonight. Already no school the rest of the week. This is crazy.
The Cwhit 100
I’m separating this into tiers. Within tiers, I can see changes in location. However, I can’t see much change. I will separate main tiers into smaller tiers. Top 25 will have comments, everything afterwards will only have a comment if I feel it is a controversial pick.
- Jason Heyward – No doubt that he is the best prospect in the game. Improving in AA as a 20 year old gives him the performance boost over Strasburg.
- Stephen Strasburg – Hopefully the savior of the Nationals organization. Fastball is legit high 90’s, and secondary stuff still looks good. AFL stats give us some assurance.
- Jesus Montero – Special bat. Seems like the next coming of Mike Piazza. Even if defense isn’t great, he’ll have the .300+ 35 homer seasons. Often.
- Desmond Jennings – This spot had been Stanton, but I have rethought things. Jennings is almost definitely going to be a Carl Crawford sort of player. His floor is an every day player. His ceiling is a perennial all-star.
- Michael Stanton – Unheard of power for a teenager. Strikeouts are an issue, but he’s good enough at making adjustments to fix them. Even if he doesn’t fix them, he can still be a great MLB player. Example: Ryan Howard. He can approach those numbers.
- Neftali Feliz – He blew me away. I’ve watched the videos of him pitching, and they are mind blowing. People don’t think that he’s going to be a starter. I’ve seen no sign that he can’t. Frame = Good, he’s started in the minors successfully, and his secondary pitches are developing.
- Brian Matusz – Good pitcher, but I can’t see ace potential. Number two is highly likely. Stuff is good, command/control are great. His/Brett Anderson’s outcomes will probably shape my future prospecting.
- Carlos Santana – Plate discipline looks great, Indians got a steal in the trade. 20-25 home run power, 300 average, average D?
- Buster Posey – Could switch him with Santana. He looks to be a better Catcher, but less power, similar discipline.
- Pedro Alvarez – Rate stats were exactly the same in AA as A+, except for a 2% cut in K rate. Could that be it? Doubt it. Did he make better contact? What did he improve on? Park/Luck adjusted stats look eerily the same across both levels. Lots of questions, along with the obvious D questions.
- Justin Smoak – Basically had the opposite season of Alvarez. Started off great, looked like a top 5 guy, then slumped due to injury. Also, was in AAA under a year after the draft. Now, the power doesn’t worry me too much. He reminds me of a Morneau caliber hitter as a ceiling. Even if he hits 25 homers with a 310 average, that’s still a great player. I’d take a 310/400/500 1B with great defense any day.
- Madison Bumgarner – I don’t believe the velocity loss is permanent. Even without it, he still pitched extremely well. His draft day report was touching the mid 90’s. His K rate was dominant in 08. Three scenarios here. Regain velocity, find out loss was because of injury, and not regain velocity. I doubt the third scenario is the real scenario. Still a top pitching prospect.
- Domonic Brown – Great combination of 5 tools and decent discipline. Will probably start to show 25-30 homer power this year, with great RF defense. 25-25 anyone?
- Dustin Ackley – Unique hitter. Not many players like him currently in the MLB. 2B or CF? Definitely will not play 1B. Can he hit more than 20 homers? No results yet, so I can’t rank him higher than this.
- Martin Perez – Extremely young for his level, advanced for his age. Excellent curve, with above average fastball velocity. Success everywhere just proves why I have him up here.
- Kyle Drabek – First player you guys may be surprised with. However, if you know me then you know why I have him up here. First year back from injury and he dominated. Sure, his K rate went down in AA, but he dominated in A+. Put him back in AA this year, and he will show you again another 10 K/9. Low-mid 90’s fastball, good curve, and under 3 BB/9. Stud prospect to me.
- Chris Carter – Absolute ball masher. Cut his K rate by 6%, they don’t seem like much of a problem to me anymore. Walk rate up as well. Defense may be an issue, but if he plays DH, it won’t be an issue. And his bat is good enough to make up on that.
- Casey Kelly – The K rate will go up as he gains velocity. Now that he’s focusing on pitching, he’s going to fill out his frame. I won’t be surprised if he’s in the low-mid 90s this year. Great control/command for a young guy. He could be top ten by the end of the year.
- Jeremy Hellickson – Low 90’s fastball, good secondary pitches, good control, amazing stats. Improved K rate going to AAA. I do however think he’s a kind of guy who will struggle for a bit in the MLB, before becoming a Jamie Shields sort of pitcher.
- Michael Taylor – Huge athlete with power. Will probably slow down to below average speed, but already makes a great amount of contact with a good walk rate. Average may fall to the 280 range, but looks to be an easy 30 homer threat. Injuries seem to be behind him, and shows plus ability in the field.
- Wade Davis – Has been a top prospect for years, but is lost behind the masses of Tampa pitching prospects. Showed three above average pitches in the MLB while succeeding on his first try. Will hopefully start year in the Tampa rotation, and is there to stay.
- Jenrry Mejia – Would be up near Perez and Kelly, other than the fact that his secondary stuff is questionable. However, is still young and has succeeded at a high level. Stuff looked great with his high 90’s FB in the AFL. Either a top of rotation starter or a dominating closer looks right to me, although which role he assumes is still questionable. Reminds me of Feliz from a year or two ago.
- Ryan Westmoreland – Huge overslot bonus from 08, he is an amazing athlete that some compare to Grady Sizemore. However, he has a rare blend of skills with his tools. He’s only performed for half a season so far, preventing me from placing him higher. I do think he will be a star.
- Fernando Martinez – Still very young. He mashed at AAA before being legal to drink. I don’t think his MLB trial knocks him out just yet. He should get at least 250 at bats in AAA, then start in the majors. I can see him being called up midseason with a 260 average and 10 homers, while preparing himself to be a 30 home run threat.
- Christian Freidrich – If he had done this a level higher, he’d be top 10. However, Colorado decided to slow him up. Amazing K rate, good walk rates, and actually was unlucky this season. Similar to Matusz as the secondary stuff far exceeds the fastball.
- Logan Morrison – May be a bit low, but he hasn’t showed power, average hitting, patience in the same season. However, each has been in separate seasons.
- Brett Wallace
- Alcides Escobar – I don’t like weak hitting good fielding SS.
- Matt Moore
- Chris Withrow
- Casey Crosby
- Simon Castro – These four belong together. A ball strikeout pitchers with great stuff.
- Derek Norris
- Mike Montgomery
- Lonnie Chisenhall
- Freddie Freeman
- Josh Vitters – Here he is! A top 35 guy. What has he done wrong? Answer me that? He’s mashed in places he’s young for his age and he has a great pedigree.
- Dan Hudson
- Jhoulys Chacin
- Jaff Decker
- Jordan Lyles
- Brett Lawrie
- Jarrod Parker
- Jacob Turner
- Hector Rondon
- Starlin Castro – See Escobar
- Tyler Flowers
- Matt Dominguez
- Aaron Hicks
- Tyler Matzek
- Josh Bell
- Tanner Scheppers
- Zach Stewart – BTD!
- Thomas Neal
- Mike Moustakas
- Todd Frazier
- Michael Saunders
- Dee Gordon – See Castro
- Jake Arrieta
- Aaron Crow
- Jason Castro
- Zack Britton
- James Darnell
- Shelby Miller
- Daniel Espinosa
- Ike Davis
- Grant Green
- Julio Teheran
- Mike Trout
- Jiovanni Miers
- Jason Knapp
- Zach Wheeler
- Travis D’Arnaud
- Ethan Martin
- Arodys Vizcaino
- Tyson Gillies – Could be UNDERRATED here. Plus plus CF defense, great patience, low power but does not need it.
- Jared Mitchell
- Brett Jackson
- Eric Hosmer
- Jose Tabata
- Ryan Kalish
- Wil Myers
- Jemile Weeks
- Hank Conger
- Manny Banuelos
- Jay Jackson
- Hak Ju Lee
- Wilson Ramos
- Nick Weglarz
- Drew Storen
- Scott Sizemore
- Austin Romine
- Alex Avila
- Everett Williams
- Tony Sanchez
- Brandon Allen
- Josh Reddick
- Kyler Burke
- Kyle Gibson
- Austin Jackson
No HM, mention names and I’ll say how close they are or if I forgot them.

Cameron Lamb
6'3 pitcher from Australia, played for the Giants AZL team this year. Pitched extremely well with good K's, but less than great control. Seems like he can fill out, and I think I saw that he hit the low 90s. Anyone know anything about him? at. He's a huge sleeper for me. I don't know, he just seems like a raw guy who could easily gain control and hop into the mid 90s when his frame fills out. Info please?

Community Prospect List #12 Runoff
Here comes the battle we have all been waiting for. The controversial last year's mega pitcher Madison Bumgarner, versus supreme athlete and untouchable in Roy Halladay trade talks Domonic Brown. Now, I still don't know why he changed his name, since I'm pretty sure he isn't Dominican. Anyways, who should win? I'm going with Bum due to the fact he's performed well without the velocity and if it comes back he will be legit unstoppable. But who will YOU pick? Vote now!
Community Prospect List #12
With 46% of the vote, 36% more than any other candidate, Justin Smoak is named #11 prospect of the community!
That's what you call a runaway, folks
Alcides Escobar will be added to the poll.

Community Prospect Runoff #9/10
Due to the fact that Santana and Feliz are the only ones above 10%, over 27% higher than anyone else, I'm sure nobody will disagree that they should be 9 and 10 respectively. The Flame Throwing Feliz (say that five times fast) against Catcher Carlos "Not the guitarist" Santana. Also, feel free to suggest names to add in future polls here as well. Wallace, Morrison, Carter, Hellickson will all be added as testers next round. Go vote!
Feliz Debut Video?
Does anyone know where there's a full video of the Feliz debut? Due to the huge debate on minorleagueball I feel like watching it. Anyone have it?

Community Prospect List #6
With 54% of the runoff vote after 20% in the regular poll, Michael Stanton wins the honor of becoming the community's #4 prospect! Due to the closeness of the last few polls, I think Jesus Montero should be declared the #5 prospect. I'll put money if it's not a runaway victory for him.
Martin Perez will be added to the poll. Testers will begin starting at round 10.

Community Prospect Runoff #4
They are both tied at 21% of 294 votes. But who is the community's #4 prospect?
I'm planning on making the loser #5, since those two names have always been very close, and no one else is within 10%. So this may be the best thing to do. If you have objections to this, please state them.
Additionally, we have one more spot for the draft I'm doing. We're in the end of round two, and you are up. You have Madison Bumgarner. Please be around and active and checking in and stuff. Just post here and I'll hook you up.
