40 years ago today
"40 years ago today, on August 12, 1970 - back when men were men and so were the pitchers - Bob Gibson threw one of his most impressive games."
"Against the Padres, Bob Gibson on that day threw 14 innings, the longest outing of his career. In fact, it's the longest start by any Cardinal pitcher since September 24, 1944. Gibson faced 52 batters, also the most of his career. With 13 Ks and a pair of walks, a basic pitch count estimator places him at just under 200 pitches thrown. This marathon start came in the midst of 21 consecutive starts in which he made it into the ninth inning. Oh yeah - he picked up the win, as the Cards beat the Pads 5-4. This improved Gibson's record to 16-5 on the year."

Gibson Story From Bobby Richardson
I recently got to talk a little bit with Bobby Richardson, 2nd baseman from the Yankees in the 50s/60s. Of course, I only wanted to talk Cardinals, so I asked him what it was like to face Gibson in the 64 Series. The Cardinals 1964 season, swiping the pennant from the Phillies and then beating the Yankees in 7 games, is my first real set of childhood baseball memories. Anyway, Richardson told me this story (quoted best as I can remember it):
"Bob Gibson was an imposing guy and had a great series that year but I (Richardson) did as well, breaking the WS record for hits. I actually had 7 of my 13 hits that series off Gibson, although Gibson got me out to end Game 7 and give the Cardinals the Series win."
"I retired in 66 and didn't see Bob Gibson again for quite awhile. Much much later I was playing in an old-timers game and Gibson was the opposing ptcher. I mentioned to someone on my side that I hadn't seen him since the 64 Series and I wondered if he even remembered me."
"My first at bat, first pitch from Mr Gibson was right at my head." "In an old timers game." "I guess he remembered", Richardson related with a long laugh.

Questions about the DL
Need to dispay my ignorance here and get some help understanding the DL. Why, after Edmonds has missed 6 games with what is now known to be a hairline fracture of a rib, is TLR reluctant to put him on the 15 day DL, backdated to the first missed game? I mean, he's already been out nearly half of it (7 days). Is there some sort of penalty or disadvantage attached, like only so many 15 day DLs per team?
Also, why does Linclon continue to ride the 15 day DL, when he's been on it since spring? Why not some other assignment (isn't there a 60 day?) Based on what Cedeno is doing, it doesn't look like the DL keeps you from rehabbing in the minors before your period is up. I mean, I understand that the 15 day gives you the flexibility to activate them as soon as they are ready, but March is a loooong time ago.
I'm sure some of you smart guys on this blog can help me understand all this. Thanks.
