Viva El Birdos Our 2010-2011 strays

Since we still have some time to kill before the official start of Spring Training let's take a look at what our various strays from the last couple of seasons have done while we were not paying that much attention, shall we?

Arthur Rhodes - (2011's Bengie Molina - was going get a ring either way, as the Rangers were paying most of his salary for him to pitch against them). As of 2/10/12 he's still a free agent

Corey Patterson - 1/31/12 signed a minor league deal with the Milwaukee Brewers, no spring training invite, likely to play all of 2012 in Triple A Nashville. Viva El Birdos Morning after Pujols - front page clippings

I really wanted to provide this without narrative but the wonderful world of SBN doesn't allow that so here are some front page clippings from papers around the country from the morning after Albert Pujols decided to leave St Louis for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and $254M over 10 guaranteed years with a full NTC. The print media origin is mostly MO, IL, FL, TX, CA

... and then there's this from our Asian friends...

Viva El Birdos Fun & Gems with the 2011 Cardinals*

- use the SBN wide view for nicer formatting
- warning, this will be a BIG, HUGE, GIANT post
- feel free to point out any defective or wrong links or inaccuracies

Soooo, it's that time of year again.. when baseball stops playing and we look back to dissect the season and see what was good and what was not. For my own sanity I like to concentrate on the positives. This year I was afraid that with the loss of both sides of the Boog and Bombs show and the most oledinddongcolorful player on the roster, this post would be rather bland, but I tried my best to extract the fun. And boy, was there baseball fun!

Offseason and Spring Training

The best thing that happened in the offseason was the signing of Lance Berkman who soon proved to be not only in the Best Shape of His Life™ but to be really funny. In his first AB in Spring Training, playing with a stiff elbow, he launched an opposite field bomb on the second pitch he saw and thus began the Year Of Our Berk.

Also, we were finally able to take Allen Craig off the milk carton and dodged a bullet when Stavinoha was left off the 40-man. Matt Carpenter showed great promise in Spring Training and Eduardo Sanchez and Fernando Salas made an impression. Carp told Shelby Miller he was tipping his pitches but there was no luggage involved. There was a light dugout clearing altercation with the Nats that was, sadly, not televised. Oh, and there was a surge of new ink on the squad: Lohse, Molina and Carp

This year's batch of Cardinals commercials was somehow not that great, and so devoid of spinning, but here they are anyway:

Scatter plots for our top regular season HR hitters

Remember how bad of a spring training Jaime had and the Westbrook season collapse? Remember we almost had Jim Edmonds on the roster? Remember when Carp and Boggs exited a Spring Training game with injuries back to back? Remember Jon Jay being over eager to get to camp not being able to sleep so he left in the middle of the night to drive there? Remember when the Pujols contract circus was driving us nuts, and the Theriot jorts comment? How about when it was announced Adam Wainwright was going to have TJ surgery and be out for the entire season? Recall Matt Holliday's appendix, Albert Pujols's broken hand, David Freese's broken hand, David Freese's concussion, Allen Craig's broken knee and all the other assorted broken bones on the team, Tony La Russa's shingles and The Eye? Remember Joe Pettini - manager? How about the blown saves and the closer carousel? Remember the turtlenecks, the faux hawks, Ryan "the Captain" Theriot, Tony La Russa's Santana good luck charm, and the Shredder? Remember being 10 1/2 games out of the Wild Card with 35 games left to play? Remember the Texas Rangers asking the Cardinals to trade Lance Berkman to them at the end of August? Recall the squirrels and the tortoises and the moth? Phonegate, #HappyFlight? What kind of crazy weird chaos was this past season?!?! But look how that turned out!

Here is a couple of (highly amateur) spliced together videos of soundbites throughout the 2011 season (thanks to FSNMW, MLB, TBS, FOX, the world wide Interwebs and various sources). Don't look for any informative value or content or any quality, it's all just for giggles. (Btw, finding a host for the self made videos proved more complicated when i thought, bear with the 20 second spot in German before it starts, it's a pain in the ass but so far the only way to circumvent copyright stuff. I'm also giving you alternative links)

Regular Season - MLB summary video, a very cool season summary video from someone on YouTube and two part interview hilarity (either use the link or watch the embedded below)

Yadi beats his personal HR record and ends the regular season with .305/.349/.465 14 HR, 65 RBIs

In NLDS 2, after trailing 4 runs Cardinals take Cliff Lee for 12 hits, 2 walks and 5 ER to win the game and tie the series. Bullpen pitches 6 stellar shutout innings of 1 hit ball between 6 pitchers. Theriot goes 2-for-4 with an RBI and 2 runs; Jay 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBIs Oct 2

In NLDS 3, even though the Cardinals outhit and outpitch the Phillies, they unluckily fall just short. Pujols goes 4-for-5 with an RBI and 3 doubles, Theriot 4-for-5 with 4 singles Oct 4

In NLDS 4, facing elimination and giving up 2 in the 1st after only 5 pitches, Cards fight back with some excellent defense, Freese goes 2-for-3 with 4 RBIs, a 2-run double and a 2-run HR and force a Game 5 Oct 5

In the decisive NLDS 5, Carp faces off with old friend Roy Halladay; Furcal hits a leadoff triple, Skip drives him in with a double after making Doc throw him 10 pitches. Yadi steals a base, the middle infield defense is stellar, Cards win 1-0 after Carp throws a 3-hit (1 walk) CGSO on 110 pitches and gets shredded. Cards advance to the NLCS Oct 7

In NLCS 2, after GIDPing in a very unfortunate spot the night before, Albert Pujols goes 4-for-5 with a HR, 3 doubles, 5 RBIs, 3 runs, 10 TB; Cardinals score 4 runs on 6 consecutive hits in the 7th, have 17 total hits; Lohse PHs, Yadi plays some 1B, Jay is 3-for-5; win 12-3, winning pitcher is Lance Lynn who threw one single pitch Oct 10

Cards win 7-1 and take a #happyflight back to Milwaukee leading the NLCS 3-2 Oct 14

Game 6 is won 12-6, both teams hit 3 HRs each and set a postseason record. Cards put up 4 in 1st and 3rd. Cards win WS Game 1 3-2 on a crazy cold night, when Carp makes this play, a PH'ing Craigen drives in the winning run, Freese extends postseason hitting streak to 11 games (18 hits) Oct 19

PH'ing Cragen drives in the go-ahead run off the same pitcher and on the same pitch as in Game 1. Jaime Garcia pitches sensational 7 innings and K's 7. Freese extends hitting streak to 12 games (19 hits). Unfortunately, Cards blow it in the 9th and end the #HappyFlight streak. Oct 20

TLR sports a faux hawk

WS Game 3 is positively nuts - Cardinals make all kinds of individual and team history. They score in the 1st, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th and become the first club to have 4 multi-run innings in a WS game. Game is won 16-7, Allen Craig hits a solo HR in his first AB, Freese is 2-for-4 with a walk, a run and 2 RBIs (extends hitting streak to 13 games and 21 hits); Yadi is 2-for-3 with a walk, a run and 4 RBIs; Albert (previously hitting .000) goes 5-for-6 with 4 runs scored, 14 TB, and 6 RBIs - a 3-run HR, a 2-run HR and a solo HR (one tiny little Grand Slam away from the Pujolsian Cycle :), ups AVG to .417) Oct 22

WS Game 7 is much more timid. In a bizarre 5th, the Cardinals push 2 through without a single hit - BB, HBP, IBB, BB, HBP. Oct 28

Freese is the WS MVP - 8 for 23 (.348), 1 HR, 7 RBIs, 3 doubles, 1 triple, 4 runs, 5 walks, 16 TB, .696 SLG

Freese now holds the postseason record for RBIs with 21 and TB with 50

Just like the Reds last year, the Brewers try to force a rivalry on the Cardinals. Zack Greinke tells the media that the entire Brewers team dislikes Chris Carpenter and explains that it's because "phony attitude [..] yells at people [..] states people down and stuff", Nyjer Morgan backpedals and Tony responds - pre NLCS

TLR bullpen in the NLCS (6 games): relievers used 5+6+4+4+4+5=28, IP 28.2, runs allowed 7, ER 6

Only 4 of 26 ESPN "experts" pick us to win the WS. The two that predicted correctly Cardinals in 7 did it for the following reasons: "The most surprising World Series team can't stop one step short." (Karl Ravech) and "Home-field advantage, two or three Chris Carpenter starts, Tony La Russa and bullpen, Albert Pujols, and, well, destiny?" (Gene Wojciechowski)

TLR forgets how to work the phones WS Game 5

WS Game 6 is postponed [questionably] because of inclement weather, which allows Chris Carpenter to be the eventual starter in Game 7 if the now 2-3 trailing in the series Cardinals tie the Rangers by winning do-or-die Game 6.

WS Game 6 will probably go down in the books as the craziest ever. It makes all kinds of firsts in WS history as the Texas Rangers are twice one out away from their first ever championship, which looks so much like a sure thing that the plastic is already up in the visitors clubhouse. Down by 3 runs in the 7th as a result of some bad baserunning and 3 fielding errors, the Cardinals score in the 8th and 9th to tie it, fall back 2 in the 10th just to tie it again with 2 outs and win it in 11. Berkman 3-for-5 with a home run, three RBIs and four runs scored, including the game-tying hit in the 10th inning. The Rangers blow 3 saves and David Freese becomes the 1st player in WS elimination game history to drive in the tying and go ahead runs. Freese gets shredded, donates jersey and bat to Hall of Fame. And just to make it more interesting, the win is a walkoff HR in the 11th and down goes the plastic in the visitor's clubhouse, Cards force a Game 7. Oct 27

Chris Carpenter pitches WS Games 1, 5 and 7.

Carp pitches 6+ in Game 7 on three days’ rest for the second time in his career and second time this postseason.

TLR bullpen in WS (7 games): relievers used 5+5+4+2+4+6+4=30, IP 25.2, runs allowed 16, ER 13

Tony La Russa retires Oct 31

I don't speak any Spanish but Eduardo Sanchez (@ESanchez52) is so short in his tweets, I really don't need to. His very first tweet is "tranquilo..." followed by 4 months of silence. He's a big fan of his buddy Salas and has two beautiful little twin girls who, I believe, are called Anthonella and Arisbeth (I could be wrong) and posts pictures of them every once in a while

Viva El Birdos Fun and Gems with the 2010 Cardinals

(Dec 2011 update - since FSNMW has killed all these videos, outside hosting was needed to keep them alive for everyone to see. My apologies to FSNMW but certain things shouldn't be deleted)

* * *You know what, I'm not going to mope about this all winter. It is what it is. And we ended on a high note..

Looking back at the 2010 season, aside from some (really, tragically) bad baseball, this season hasn't really lacked entertainment or highlights. I'll let you guys dissect the baseball fiasco, I will just concentrate on what made me smile this season. Feel free to throw in some of your favorites

The Boog and Bombs Sitcom

My favorite part of the 2010 season was actually Spring Training because of the Boog and Bombs sitcom and I was very sad when it got canceled. But here's a recap. And if you haven't seen it, go watch it! It has everything - comedy, fashion, celebrities, cooking, travel, nature, medicine, art and broken stuff.

Disclaimer: Boog Affliction T-Shirt appearance count - 5. Oh Boog...

In the Boog-and-Bombs preseason trailers Boog arrived with a cast, and Joey Bombs in a teeny tiny Ford rental and a cool T-shirt

* * *

In the season premiere Boog the cameraman films "the most popular guy in camp - Joey Bombsquad" pretending to hit Mark McGwire's big HR with bat dropping, turning back to touch 1B, high fives, picking up the kid and everything

* * *

In the second episode Boog coaches Big Mac with a special appearance of one David Freese

* * *

An extra two part (1 & 2) tiny little episode Boog and Bombs briefly get to be in the vicinity of Kobe Bryant thanks to Albert Pujols convincing the security guards that they were on the Cardinals.

* * *

Another extra episode shows the chatty chatterbox that is Boog taking BP

* * *

Episode three is all about fashion. Matt Holliday's not appreciating

Boog dissing his $34 shoes (Boog's Nike's are free)

On a side note, it looks like Lego might really be made of plastic - he barely moves his lips when he talks and I think his upper jaw might actually be glued to the bottom one. Guest appearance for color commentary from one Rasmus, Colby

* * *

Episode four features Boog as Bombs' housewife (Boog, lose the shirt please)

and the famous Ring Pop

* * *

Episode five takes place in the garage and tells the story of Joey's rental's parking and Joey's parking skills. Boog: "You parked the car and hit the garage door and i asked if the garage door was gonna hit the car and you came running over..". This is how close it was

For episode six on the Boog-and-Bombs show the boys are back in the garage. The episode features "one ball, one tennis racket, one Joe Mather, a hoop, lots of pride, and lots of skill." A trashcan lid makes an appearance too but it looks like this game is not ready to become a professional sport. Yet.

* * *

Since garage basketball didn't take off as they'd wanted, in episode seven Boog and Bombs recruit some girls and attempt garage tennis. Before the game can really begin, Joey hits a bomb and a wall clock dies in the process. Joe tries to look innocent and rats out Boog for braking a framed vintage poster earlier.

Episode eight goes back to cinema basics - (almost) silent movie but long and artsy, and in color. Boog and Bombs are on a 2:45 am mission to retrieve some drinks and it is a success!

* * *

Midseason coincided with the end of spring training and it looked like a good time to do a best of that included a couple of unaired scenes

* * *

In episode ten Joe and Boog visit Target field. Here's a couple for the ladies:

* * *

Remember this?
Episode eleven takes us behind the scenes of this the Waino-Jim Rome interview sabotage - funny as hell

* * *

I wonder if this was supposed to be Boog's interview for his own Food Network show.. Maybe Boog wants to be a cooking psychologist and episode twelve looks almost rehearsed. "I've had ribs, and you haven't. How does that make you feel?"

* * *

And if the Food Network rejected him, that's probably Boog's plan B - audition for National Geographic. In episode thirteen Boog and Bombs discover The biggest. Bird. Ever! (that thing is pretty huge)

* * *

And now we'll be immersed in the world of medical dramas. In episodes fourteen and fifteen little Boog undergoes the surgical removal of an ingrown toenail. He's scared, he's screaming, there are doctors, surgical instruments, iodine, gloves, lots of close-ups and a surprisingly stoic Joe Mather. Watch these at your own peril. For the sensies among us, there will be no snapshots of body parts, just of scared Boog and in-pain Boog.

* * *

Episode sixteen, poetically entitled "Braving the storm" plays out to the undying Rick Astley hit and guest stars Freese and Motte and an epic downpour. Some disturbing closeups of wet pants I'd rather not post..

* * *

In episode seventeen Boog tries to get Bombs in trouble by making him honk the car horn at the car in front that's holding them up in the parking lot. Only, the driver of that car is the bossman Mo who's signing autographs. They honk. Mo gives them a look. That is probably when he called FSNMW and told them to cancel the show, because the next one is the last one.

* * *

The season finale takes place in Cincinnati on the off day after the opening day destruction of the Reds. Cincinnati is so boring, that the boys have to entertain themselves with a little bouncy ball, which is, of course, absolutely exhausting..

* * *

And while we're doing finale's, here's the season finale of Cardinals Live. See who rattles the cages, Hawk lurk and the reason why Pat Harris will one of these days take revenge on the freaky green hairy mess that is the Philly Phanatic

* * *

Extra episodes:

  • Joey introduces us to Dr Thunder who then publicly cancels their friendship. Then the Dr Thunder apparel finally arrives
  • Hawk aka Tommy Bloomsdale mic'd up in the bullpen provides commentary with the help of co-host Boggs aka Bruce Blackstone. Find out who's the self-proclaimed "Webdog", and exactly how close those two are in their "booth"
  • Stav breaks the US Marines' F-18/KC-130 flight simulator (shocker!) Chief Justice crashes it.
    Spaceballs and Top Gun:
  • Crazy Sauce anyone? Yeah, he doesn't curse. At all. Mmmmhmmm..
  • Bullpen golf outing fashion
  • Waino takes us hunting for some killing and some Jesus talk ..and then takes us to work in his truck, whose name is Pearl
  • And here's an extra spring training funny clip of the rest of the team. Watch eeeet! (edit - i'm still trying to figure out where i put this one, i'll link to it as soon as i have it)
  • Thank you FSNMW and next year please give cameras to everyone!

    * * *

    Nov 4th 2010 update: Now that Joe Mather's off to Atlanta, it is certain there will be no more Boog and Bombs... :(( Also, 2011 found Boog traded to Seattle :(

    Viva El Birdos Cardinals 9/4/2010 Photo Day

    So Picture Day was Saturday.. I am sure most of you DGAF. It was uneventful, but nice...

    I am sure Mrs Evilfrog's pictures would put mine to crying-in-the-corner-in-a-fetal-position shame but I thought I'd share a few that came out alright with you guys (aaand gals!) regardless. I'm going to blame the mediocrity on the equipment although standing in a stupid spot, not reading the camera manual and the sheer lack of talent might have something to do with it.

    The Cardinals came out in groups and walked around so people on the track and on the field can take pictures. But just check out the weird groupings...

    First - Oquendo, Dunc, Big Mac, Pettini, Marty Mason and some interesting facial hair, Dave McKay who seems to have a really weird smile, a mildly romantic Mike Aldrete (thank you prophetjohn for helping me id him) walked through, followed by TLR who got to make the round alone, but he actually stopped ever so often and posed for pictures

    Then came Albert, Yadi and Chief Justice - Yadi and Albert were laughing, Yadi waived, Jay seemed a little uncomfortable but he'd wave and smile every once in a while

    Then it was Boog, for some reason,  all by himself - chatty but kept a few feet from the crowd, seemed a little self-conscious:

    The make-up of this next group could be a "what does not belong" SAT question - Winn, Miles, Paggz, Anderson, and... wait for it... Colby!

    Winn and Paggz gave a bunch of high fives, Colby actually stayed way behind and eventually fell behind even the groups that followed him, he stopped everywhere, shook hands, grabbed the hands of seems like all little babies, and took pictures with whoever asked him for it.

    Next group - Skip, Lego, Feliz and Stav (who puts these together?) quickly caught up with Miles and Anderson

    Lego is awfully tall and didn't get enough sleep, Skippy knows how to look cool in pictures:

    How about a couple of blurry pictures of some of these monster-players:

    d-dee: Stav, you gotta shave your head!

    Feliz, Miles, Skip, Anderson: (loud laughter)

    Stav (doing his best Peter Griffin impression): Nnno!

    (more laughter from the group)

    The next group - Floppy, Dennys, Salsa (who wears braces), Soup, Franklin, and this lovely lady who kept asking people if they liked the locks:

    Someone cast these guys in a movie together:

    Now let's compare some beards:

    Is that a matter of grit vs. no grit? Cause Miles and Stav also had some impressive beards..

    When Colby finally got to me, he shook my hand and i asked:

    d-dee: So Colby, are you enjoying fatherfhood?

    The always colorful Mr Rasmus (in the most even tone of voice i have ever heard): yes. ilikeitalot

    Now that I look at all the pictures, I realize, Colby did not smile once.

    Along came Sauce, K-Mac, Boggsy, Hawk and Ottavino

    One more movie can come out of this (note to self: need better telephoto lens, learn Photoshop and somehow get more skills):

    Wondered if I should address Motte as "Sauce" but decided to go the conventional way

    d-dee: Hey Jason!

    Motte: (?)

    d-dee: You're awesome!

    Motte: (smile)

    d-dee: And you're crazy! You're crazy awesome!

    Motte: Thank you, thank you! (and this:)

    Next group Westy, Lohse, McDougal, Jaime (seriously, who put those together?) gave high fives posed for a few pictures with people (yes, even Jaime).

    Westy shook hands, shook mine and so far I've never had a problem chatting him up:

    d-dee: So Westy, will you resign with us?

    Westy: I don't know, we'll see, not up to me.

    d-dee: You should stay

    Westy: We'll see, I really want to

    And a bonus Fredbird and some Scott's:

    I returned home with a little souvenir:

    Of course Waino didn't come out since he was starting and Carp was a no-show either, which I thought was just Carp luggaging Photo Day, but turns out he was actually sick and went home.

    Anyway guys (aaand gals!), please post your Flickr, Picasa, Photobucket etc. photo stream if you have one

    And after Picture Day was done, that was it, there was no game or anything afterwards, we all just went home, nothing else happened.

    P.S. I started putting up some of my pictures from the 2010 season here. Action shots will be added slowly, yours truly is still struggling to learn some Photoshop.

    Viva El Birdos Carp's Body Art, Kyle Lohse's scar

    I figured the other side of baseball can't break your heart and we've been talking about this for a little while, (UpBaby, I want to put your SB Nation St Louis article to shame haha) so even though this is not really fanpost material, here's my count on Carp's tattoos: 4. And I need to learn to tell the difference between left and right. Typical.

    And if you guys know me at all, you know there will be pictures (that I stole from somewhere)

    1. Let's start with the one we all know about but we have yet to see in its entirety: the non-pitching arm tattoo. Dan will allow me to steal a little from him too... The original Columbia Daily Tribune article from April 2009 indicating Carp got the tattoo in the 2008 offseason:

    The new tattoo spreads over half the arm displaying his family via astrological signs. There’s a lion for his daughter, a Leo. A crab for his wife, a Cancer. An arch for his son, a Sagittarius. A bull for himself, a Taurus.

    "It’s something I’ve been thinking about for a few years," Carpenter said. "My wife helped me come up with it.

    "She loves it, and so do the kids."

    I've been lurking for a little bit trying to catch a shot of that tattoo when the pitching staff throws around during batting practice, but so far no luck.

    This photo below is from July 25th and was taken by Nam Y.Huh (AP)

    Photo below was taken Aug 21st by Chris Lee of the PD. Someone on the Cards staff, please continue shortening his sleeves, thank you.

    I also stole this from somewhere and forgot to take a note from where:

    It reveals the back side of the arm. I flipped them and tried to enlarge and sharpen it a little but it's not really great

    Update Jan 15th 2011: What can I say, I am awesome.. because boys and girls, a VEB exclusive (or at least the first full frame of it I've ever seen), Mr Carpenter himself allowed me to take this photo at the 2011 Cardinals Care Winter Warmup. I am surprised he didn't chase me away with security but I told him it goes in an article (yes, I will call this an article) and he agreed. Thank you, Carp, for being a good sport!!

    2. The much talked about Aug 10th brawl revealed the top of a tattoo on his pitching arm too. The scar wasn't bad ass enough? I don't have a better screen cap right now but I'll try again later

    3. This next one - a small tattoo on Carp's ring finger - is a weird one, not because of what it is, but because of its timing. I noticed it in a July 3rd photo by Jeff Roberson (AP) when Carp took a beating by the Brewers and was pulled in the 4th.

    Enlarged:

    In case this still needs explaining Carp's wife's name is Alyson and I thought I remembered it was two dots for their two kids, but it looks like three, so either they have one on the way, or means something else or means nothing - it's their business.

    And since I already felt like a stalker for even noticing that, I thought I'd go on a little investigation of when exactly it appeared. It seems quite strange for a pitcher to get a tattoo on his hand mid season, right?

    Remember the little Apil 21st Edwin Jackson incident that caused the benches to clear and was the birth of possibly the most awesome meme of all time - CCDGAF? Here is a cap of Carp's left hand from that game - nothing

    Then there was this June 1st photo by Scott Rovak (who is a photography genius, please don't sue me for borrowing this) - and here he already has it:

    During the time the @MLBSTLCardinals was bombarding us with the celebrity Stand For Stan photos, there was a photo of Carp posted May 28th:

    So I guess it appeared in the week between May 21st and May 28th - now we know Carp is even more bad ass - getting a tattoo mid-season means he can do whatever he wants and DGAF.

    4. The last mystery tattoo that I had only heard a mention of but never saw proof of, I accidentally ran across today. Credit goes to 101ESPN Radio St Louis WXOS's Facebook page. From what I can tell it's an actual carp fish and other stuff I can't make out and it's huge. I don't know if it's even actually finished at the time the photo was taken (Spring Training 2010) but here it is:

    Yes, Chris Carpenter is mighty badass!

    And now let's win some ball games so we can enjoy baseball again. Go Cards!

    Update 12/09/2010 Carp's getting more bad ass at 9:30 in the morning (props to FSNM for sneaking in for this)

    There's a video part 1and video part 2, as well as part 3, part 4 and part 5 Story behind the leg tattoo in Carp's words:

    "about determination and perseverance, what I've gone through in my life [..] it's a Japanese koi fish, has nothing to do with people calling me Carp"

    Tattoo artist explains that in Japan the koi is a royal fish that constantly swims upstream and has features of a dragon. Carp's tattoo is of a a twin koi with one is swimming up and the other down, and it's also about Chris' family and him being two different people on and off the field. So there you have it, no more mystery

    5. New tattoo showed up on the back of Carp's other calf in Spring Training 2012. We'll have to investigate :)

    Viva El Birdos The Brawl and Who Did What In Pictures

    We've talked about this so much, and so has FSNMW, ESPN and everyone, yet I am still amazed how this is still an issue for people who are not even fans of either teams involved.
    So before I get more calls and VEB gets any more trolls telling us how our team should conduct itself and ask for suspensions for people who don't deserve it, here's a little breakdown of the Tuesday brawl and I hope this is going to be the last of it. Because video doesn't lie. Bitch!

    Molina is preparing for the inning, not yet in position, nobody's talking to anybody, no one's looking at anyone, just business as usual

    Then Brandon Phillips, in his infinite wisdom decides to tap him on the shin guards as a "friendly greeting". Molina kicks his bat away
    Phillips taps the home plate umpire, I assume as part of his at-bat routine

    In all honesty, if you're going to badmouth someone in public and then pretend like nothing happened, do you seriously expect the other side to greet you with fresh-baked cookies and a hug? If you do, you are out of touch with reality.
    So, since Phillips is probably a little delusional, he taps Yadier's shin guard AGAIN

    Now i don't know if his at-bat routine involves tapping the catcher twice (doubtful), but if you're told it's not welcome, take a note. Phillips steps out of the batter's box to do his practice swing (as if that'll do any good) and when he comes back Molina probably gives him a little piece of his mind.

    Could Molina have not reacted? Yes. Should he have? No grown man with an ounce of pride would let something like this go. Especially since it's all happening in public.

    "I was ready to start the game and he touched me," said Molina. "With the comments he made yesterday, I said, ‘Why are you touching me? You are not my friend, so don’t touch me.’ Yeah, he was doing that hello thing with his bat. That’s stupid." src

    Phillips puffs up, gets in his face and starts stepping towards Molina. Molina doesn't back down and now Lopez and Garcia, as well as Janish and Gomes are already running to the plate

    Now, this could have ended here, as the Umpire separates them, but they both keep staring at each other, Phillips calls Molina a motherfucker, Molina calls him the same and as Yadier is being pushed back by the Umpire, Phillips keeps stepping towards him

    Okay, so benches clear, both still visibly upset

    Notice who needs more restraining from both players and umpires - Molina's pile on the left, Phillips on the right

    If you look at the MLB footage, you can see Rolen and Molina talking, Rolen nods several times and says "I know" - so much for everybody thinking the same way Phillips does as he claimed

    At this point Chris Carpenter is on the fields and from the video you can see he still hasn't said a single word and is standing in the back

    Gomes also visible upset, needs to be held back, with yelling Dusty Baker marching in from behind not making this thing any easier

    All Dusty Baker had to do to stop this from escalating is tell Phillips to shut up and play ball. He and Walt Jocketty both said they don't approve of Phillips' comments to the press, so why act like this is everybody else's fault?

    Baker is being directed by the umpire to move, taking Phillips with him where he runs into Oquendo

    According to Dusty "That thing was over until some people [Oquendo] started talking." src

    "Some guys said to be quiet and (coach) Jose Oquendo was talking and I told him to be quiet and Tony told me, ‘Don’t talk to my coaches,’ and I told him a few things, he told me a few things and I heard some things behind my back and then it was on again. I thought we’d calmed it down. It was ugly, not good baseball."

    Lots of barking (notice where Cueto and Gomes are positioned)

    Baker and Larussa get separated and now Carp says something and Dusty does not like it

    Should Carp have said anything? Probably not. I don't know if he was reacting to something that was said or just threw in a comment or what but all hell broke loose from there. Rolen goes a little too abruptly towards Carpenter and Larue and from the back everyone storms in

    Watch Hernandez, Gomes and Cueto run towards Carpenter. They run behind everybody trying to throw punches

    And how about this fist

    At this point Jason Larue is trapped between Carpenter and Rolen, both of which are trying to hold back and protect Carpenter

    And how about this grab

    Gomes pushing on Carpenter's throat and pinning him back into the net

    Cueto is now being pinned into the net by his own teammates, after he himself ran in front of the entire crowd trying to get a piece of the action - so much for being "scared" and "protecting" himself, no one is trying to hurt him

    You have Carpenter and Cueto against the net, Carpenter pinned worse, people swinging and grabbing at him, yet he doesn't throw a single punch, while Cueto, surrounded by his own teammates is kicking Carpenter in the back with his spikes

    Now Cueto is kicking Larue IN THE HEAD like a maniac, while he's wearing spikes

    Jason Larue falls down in the crowd after being kicked in the head several times, but Cueto keeps kicking (warning, monster gif below) Note: I created this gif at 60% speed. In reality, stuff was happening way faster than this.

    And as if kicking him repeatedly in the head is not enough, now he has to grab for Larue's throat

    And now Hernandez got Larue in a headlock

    Cueto has to be restrained and taken out of the crowd by his own teammates, while Hernandez keeps going at Larue. Carpenter is brought to the ground, McGwire falls under everyone, Suppan somehow crawls out from under the crowd, Miller has to restrain Hatcher. Larue suffers a concussion, has injuries on his face right outside of his left eye, his lip needs stitching, he's got badly bruised ribs, Carpenter has spike marks on his back

    The moral of the story:

      - Brandon Phillips - talking smack in professional sports makes you look like and asshole, and if you can't back that talk up, it just makes you look like an idiot. Always remember that in a team everything you say and do represents your team and no one appreciates being made to look stupid.
      - If you are the leader of your clubhouse be careful what you do: Carpenter - maybe leave your manager do the talking, Rolen - making sudden movements even when you mean to keep the peace can be quickly misinterpreted and you have a fight on your hands.
      - Cueto fights like a girl

    And now, please no more trolls telling us who needs to be suspended for what, who caused what and how this could have been avoided. Watch the video and look at the score.
