Nice to add a champion wrestler/RB from a D1 factory. Any Jr's on that team?
Interesting that the KU-KState game seems to be a bit of an after thought this week. I thought it and BU were suppose to be tough and the reason that mizzoo was the virtual mid-season champion. Hmmm, so far not so much.
Here is a compilation of info from various articles - mostly ESPN, about 13 players eligible for 5th year at Notre Dame. Also, Harry Hiestand was named to the Irish coaching staff, replacing Ed...
Piscataway's Shaw headed to Kansas Iowa backed out of an offer at the last minute (like the bug boyz to Mortenson) and KU jumped at the chance. It's just a verbal at the moment until he can get on campus for a visit. There are probably 3 things that stick out to me from the article: 1. They know Jersey boy Charlie Weis. 2. It is great to develop a positive relationship with this program - the two-time defending North 2 Group IV champions who are widely regarded as the state’s top public school program that has produced dozens of scholarship players over the years, three of whom became first-round NFL draft picks. 3. Shaw is a two-sport star who reached the state final of last year’s NJSIAA wrestling tournament at 171 pounds and is favored to win a title at 182 pounds this year. This link (http://footballrecruiting.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1324993) is to a rivals page from before KU stepped up.
Someone asked the question the other day when what's his name committed to join his teammate at CU. An answer that was proposed was that the buffs were returning to the recruiting practices of previous administrations. Maybe Mr Wright is a misunderstood young man that will become as clean as the mountain air once he changes scenery. Maybe.
"As far as I can recall, he's the highest maintenance kid NEVER to play a down at KU." Even though its a different sport. I would give this award to Vincent Askew. The award should be named after Askew, but Brock is clearly the most deserving recipient in a long time. Since Giles? Who are the others? Matt, How about an article about all the problem child athletes over the years?
http://www2.kusports.com/weblogs/tale-tait/2012/jan/19/former-ku-quarterback-brock-berglund-iss/#c1928464Interesting to read a discussion of the difference between spread and pro QB's when considering where we've been (QB & O) as well as much of the Big12, and the expectations for next year.
Interesting quote comparing Bramlage to the Phog. King also says that BU's schedule wasn't soft, but stops just short of saying it equates with KU's schedule. Granted, it isn't as sugary sweet as the tiggers, but to compare the 0-L's to 3-L's without further comment is lame, tho somewhat expected in the let's get things hyped mentality of King/ESPN.
"Davis, who wept on the sideline afterward days after saying he was overwhelmed early on by Harbaugh's thick playbook, finished with seven catches for 180 yards." Following the Niners playoff victory over the Saints. There have been comments about Weis' playbook being overwhleming for a college kid. While it may be more than your average college playbook, hopefully players can see the benefit of investing the time to learn. The game/season also makes me wonder what the past couple years could have been like if one of the rumors from a couple years ago would have come true.
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/recap?gameId=320114025Could we get him and/or the other WR from USC (?) to match up with our pair of 5* QB transfers?
Nice article, and a little different perspective.
With KU already employing ex-OU OC Long, does Stoops become a candidate for the DC position here after leavng 'zona?
And in the illustrious words of Rivet - Where's the DT's?!
From Tait's FB Notebook Adds some articulation to the depth chart. Gill announced Tuesday that three players had been suspended for violating team rules. Sophomore wide receiver Erick McGriff and red-shirt freshman tight end Jimmay Mundine will miss the next two games to serve their suspensions, while sophomore defensive end Tyrone Sellers will sit out Saturday’s game against McNeese State. In addition to those three players, the Jayhawks will be without senior defensive tackle Patrick Dorsey, red-shirt freshman linebacker Jake Farley and sophomore wide receiver Chris Omigie, who all will miss Saturday’s contest because of injuries.
http://www2.kusports.com/news/2011/aug/31/matt-taits-ku-football-notebook/not that it likely comes as a surprise to anyone here. Last year he picked KU to finish way down in the conference, and publicly ate his words after the 'Hawks won again. This year he totally omits TRob and the rest of the 'Hawks from the top 25. Silly, silly old man. Most people know enough to retire when they no longer have the motivation to stay professionally relevant. That is not to say that it happens at a particular age, just that it is sad to see a caricature.
Brad Edwards is predicting we make it to the Pinstripe Bowl This year. I'll have whatever he's having.
Interesting question from the Big12 Blog at ESPN: S. Mo in Atlanta, Ga., asked: Don't let bowl season fool you about what conference is better. The teams who run the ball more will win a majority of bowl games. The 3-5 week layoff between the last game and the bowl game will always benefit the running teams because the timing of the passing game takes 2 Qts. and sometimes longer to adjust to game speed. Look at the regular season records between the conferences, it's a better gauge. Also, remember what the "running" Big 8 used to do to the passing SEC in bowl games? See Tommy Frazier vs. Danny Weurful. A playoff will change that. All teams can remain sharp, and you will see who truly are the best teams. Some years it would be the SEC, but not as oftern as you think. DU: Interesting sentiment. I don't think it's a universal truth, but I agree there's some validity to it. There's not a lot of rust, considering teams do practice plenty heading into the bowl games, but practice isn't games, and the timing definitely has to be at least a bit off. Your case is a weak one in favor of a playoff, but we also saw teams like Oklahoma State, Oklahoma and Missouri look great passing the ball, maybe even better than they did during the regular season. I'm interested to hear from the fans, though. Is our man's idea legit? Do bowl layoffs favor running teams? It is initially interesting considering the 'Hawks movement towards a more balanced/rn oriented O. Anybody out there with the access/interest in this data? It would seem that a simple analysis would just split teams into categories of whether they threw or ran the ball more (than the national average?) during the regular season, and then what is their bowl results? A really geeked out approach would be to run a regression analysis on the rate/% at which they ran the ball during the season vs. the probability of success in the bowl game.
http://espn.go.com/blog/big12"There's a lot that goes into it that's on them. You've got to want to put the work in, the attitude, the investment. It's not easy to show up intense for the game," OU coach Bob Stoops said. "When you come in, you're one of 80 guys, so you can hide. You don't tell anyone, but it can happen. So have you invested the emotion it takes to play at your best. Those are things that players have to do." "It's working hard every day, it's doing the little things like you have something to prove to everybody, like you came in last in your conference and you're looking to win more ball games," linebacker Travis Lewis said. "It's having that mentality that you're going out there every day looking for a way to improve yourself. Like, you're ranked last. Carry that mentality with everything you do and never get complacent." That sounds a lot like what Coach Gill has been talking to our players about; about becoming a winning program.
http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/football/big12/home.htmKANSAS STATE - INSIDE SLANT @ USAToday The letter of the law regarding offseason conditioning could contribute to the demise of Kansas State football. At least coach Bill Snyder made that assessment based on reports from workouts neither he, nor his assistants, are allowed to monitor. "There's been this major push that it's voluntary, and some youngsters believe it's voluntary,'' Snyder said. Reading between the lines, or listening between the words, one of the bigger disappointments in terms of work ethic has been running back Bryce Brown, a Tennessee transfer who was the only Wildcat named to the preseason All-Big 12 team. Snyder offered high praise for Brown's brother, Arthur, who also transferred to Kansas State (from Miami) and is expected to greatly boost a linebacking corps that contributed to the nation's second-worst run defense last season. Comments regarding Bryce Brown, however, were not nearly as effusive. Can you say bust? Since KState's O/team was built around the departed Daniel Thomas, they'll be looking to Bryce Brown (oops?), or have to rely on 5-7 John Hubert. 'm liking our ops against them more and more all the time.
