Redrafting for the Hawks
So I was bored recently and decided to start with the 2004 NBA draft and re-draft for the Hawks. From there I simulated the season using whatifsports.com, and then went forward as if I was the GM instead of Billy Knight. If that sounds interesting instead of painful, please take a gander.
Heyward Silver Lining?
His September has been, by no means, a rousing success. But so far he has a .395 obp. In fact, he already has more walks this month than any month except April despite only starting 10 games so far.
Maybe I'm just grasping at straws, but I see it as a sign of hope that Heyward is starting to regain his approach at the plate that made him so valuable last year. Now he just has to work on the .303 slugging in September.
"Interesting scene here postgame. Saints defensive players running back on to the field to take postgame unit photos at Falcons midfield logo"
Smith’s attitude poses problems for Hawks
I hope this is just a national writer over-reacting to one incident.
Yahoo: Falcons likely to get burned in thrillers
A discussion of whether so many close wins is a sign of greatness or barely getting by. Not as harsh as the title.
The Nationals spent more money on Werth than all the free agents the franchise had signed in the previous 20 years combined.
Buster Olney
Joe Johnson Rosterbation
So with Joe getting off to a horrendous start, and with the Hawks starting to realize that they are better off running the offense through either Al Horford or Josh Smith, I figured it was the perfect time to start dreaming of scenarios wherein the Hawks could trade Joe and his horrendously bad contract. It's either that or just complain about Sund and/or the Atlanta Spirit, and, frankly, that's like beating a dead horse.
See the possibilities I saw after the jump.
"He has just been woeful on the pick and rolls. And Joe has never been outstanding on the defensive end. Solid offensively, but..."
I hate Peter King:
The Giants obliterating Seattle in Seattle, continuing to play offensive football like the 2007 Patriots and becoming the undisputed nine-week champion of the NFC. Unless you're the Packers and you'd like to dispute that.
Some Respect from SI
"Is any home-court playoff team less respected than the Atlanta Hawks? They've improved five years in a row, they've won a playoff series for two years running, they're coming off a 53-win season, they've held on to their top players while staying under the luxury tax, and yet they remain an afterthought."
It turns out that three of the Falcons' big-name veterans are stepping up their games in unheralded ways, along with an unsung candidate for defensive player of the year.
That is a big statement to make, but Brent Grimes is backing it up with terrific coverage numbers. Grimes had more than solid metrics last season, as his 6.7 yards per attempt (YPA) mark ranked him in the upper third of the league in that category, but he has taken it up a notch this year.
He has allowed only 124 completion/penalty yards on 27 pass attempts. That equates to a 4.6 YPA, which is only a yard per attempt more than Darrelle Revis posted last year in his coverage season for the ages. Atlanta has been in dire need of a true No. 1 cornerback for a long time and Grimes has provided that.
Kris Medlen - Road to Recovery
Per DOB. I hope he keeps up with this.
Falcons Favorable Schedule
I don't know if this has been covered before on this site, but I saw this in the comments on the AJC. Of the 16 games the Falcons play this season, 12 come against opponents who were on the road the previous week. 5-6 (depending on if you count Arizona) were on the road on the west coast. Further, only one team is coming off their bye.

Mycal Jones named Carolina League's Player of the Week
"His .955 slugging percentage was higher than the OPS totals of all but seven other players in the entire Carolina League."
Debate on Freeman
Fanpost on Minor League Ball with an interesting debate on Freddie Freeman and whether he is a top-15 prospect in the comments.
