I heard XRT's Lin Brehmer mention this story this morning, so I went and tracked down the link. A 16-year-old knuckleballer, who happens to be a girl, has been drafted by one of the teams in a newly formed independent league in Japan. She stands to break the gender barrier in Japanese pro ball. Naturally, Tim Wakefield's name comes up.

Here's a direct link to the MLB conference call recognizing Geovany Soto as 2008 National League Rookie of the Year. During the call, Geo answers media questions about his big win, his approach to the game, and, of course, the Cubs early exit from the playoffs. He even gives a shoutout to his mentor, Henry Blanco.

Note how the call moderator keeps mispronouncing Gordon Wittenmyer's name. Also note how one of the reporters actually names Edinson Volquez as a candidate for Rookie of the Year even though Volquez wasn't eligible. ARGH!

I get a Yahoo! news feed and this article turned up in today's batch of mostly useless, repetitive links. (Hey, did you hear that Hendry got a contract extension?) I found both the article and the topic on which the professor will be speaking to be pretty interesting. If you read the comments, you'll also see that I weighed in on the article's last two paragraphs, which did not please me.
