Let’s just hope he knows what he’s doing.

After getting very little out of starting fullback Thomas Tapeh, the Philadelphia Eagles head coach figured that if he’s going to get nothing, he shouldn’t have to pay for it.

To that end, the Eagles went out and signed former defensive lineman, linebacker and occasional goal-line fullback Dan Klecko to compete for the starting fullback job. Klecko’s main competition? Jason Davis, a third-year pro who spent last season on the practice squad. Neither player has ever started a game at fullback in the NFL and neither will appease Donovan McNabb’s request for some offensive help this season, Klecko’s two career TD catches notwithstanding.

This isn’t entirely new ground for Klecko, son of former New York Jets All-Pro defensive lineman Joe Klecko. This will also be a homecoming of sorts for the younger Klecko, who starred at Temple. He earned the Big East Defensive Player of the Year in 2003 as an Owl senior and was picked in the fourth round (117th overall) by the New England Patriots, with whom he won two Super Bowls (XXXVIII and XXXIX). As a rookie in ‘03, he spent time on special teams and served as a blocking fullback in goal-line situations, helping pave the way on five of nine of the Pats’ rushing TDs during their Super Bowl title run that year.
