OTTOTD: 8/11/11 :: I SEE DA MEN OF FIN[LAND]
Johnson & Johnson, the world's second-biggest maker of health-care products, said profit fell as generic drug competitors and a recall of Tylenol, Motrin and other consumer brands eroded second-quarter sales.
Second-quarter net income slipped to $2.78 billion, or $1 a share, from $3.45 billion, or $1.23, a year earlier, the New Brunswick, New Jersey-based company said in a statement today. Earnings excluding one-time items were $1.28 compared with the $1.24 average estimate of 17 analysts in a Bloomberg survey. Sales were $16.6 billion, compared with $15.3 billion a year earlier.
Patents lapsed in the quarter for the antibiotic Levaquin and ADHD treatment Concerta, allowing generic competition for drugs that generated $2.7 billion in sales last year. The company has also lost ground to rival makers of over-the-counter painkillers and other products, after quality problems forced it to pull more than 40 brands of Tylenol, Motrin and other medicines last year.

Home | Non-food | Drug | Should You Ever Take Tylenol? Should You Ever Take Tylenol?Posted By Dr. Mercola | July 19 2011
A recent recall of over-the-counter Tylenol has left many consumers wondering whether it's safe to buy a replacement bottle or whether it's time to turn to other options. The recall is just the latest in a series of Johnson & Johnson product recalls over the past few years, including other formulations of Tylenol.
In this instance, close to 70,000 bottles were recalled due to reports of a musty, moldy odor that has been linked to the chemical 2,4,6-tribromoanisole (TBA), which can cause gastrointestinal symptoms.
USA Today reports:
"... [H]eat is effective for muscle strains and pain ... [O]ver-the-counter heat wraps ... can even be worn while walking ... One non-pill alternative for joint and muscle troubles is movement, such as walking, stretching and Pilates ... For headaches ... people can talk with their doctors about magnesium and vitamin B supplements as a preventative ... For more immediate head pain, he says, aromatherapy is worth a try."
In an effort to reduce the risk of liver damage resulting from overuse of acetaminophen — the active ingredient in Tylenol — the drugmaker's McNeil division will soon cap the product's daily dose recommendation at 3,000 milligrams (a total of six 500-milligram pills a day) instead of the current 4,000 (eight pills a day).
Some experts say they also worry about overuse of other medications that consumers can purchase off pharmacy shelves without a prescription, such as the pain reliever ibuprofen, Theraflu for colds, and the antihistamine Benadryl.
"It's important for the public to realize all drugs have side effects. It doesn't matter if they're prescription, over-the-counter, herbals or nutritional supplements. If they have active ingredients, they have side effects and can interfere with normal body functions," says Brian Strom, director of the Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.
He says Tylenol is an "extraordinarily" safe drug at proper doses, even though its overuse is a leading cause for liver transplants in patients with acute liver failure. But, he says, "It has a narrow therapeutic ratio. The toxic dose and the therapeutic dose are very close."
Commonly used over-the-counter medications may carry risks, say experts.
Acetaminophen (Extra Strength Tylenol). For headaches, joint and muscle pain, fever.
Overuse risks: Liver damage or failure. May cause liver problems at lower doses in alcohol users, or in those who take other drugs containing acetaminophen.
Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). Reduces pain and swelling related to arthritis. Relieves headache, fever, menstrual cramps.
Overuse risks: Gastrointestinal pain, bleeding. Kidney damage.
Diphenhydramine (Benadryl), antihistamine used to prevent, reduce hayfever and other allergy symptoms.
Overuse risks: Memory loss and disorientation, especially in elderly. Drowsiness, dryness.
Loratadine (Claritin), antihistimine used to relieve hayfever, other allergy symptoms.
Overuse risks: Sleepiness, fast heart rate. May lose effectiveness over time. Claritin-D includes an additional active ingredient, pseudoephedrine sulfate, which may cause insomnia or restlessness. Pseudoephedrine should not to be taken with certain medications for Parkinsons, depression, psychiatric or other emotional conditions.
Dextromethorphan, a cough suppressant, and Doxylamine succinate, an antihistamine (NyQuil Cough).
Overuse risks: Can cause drowsiness, especially when mixed with sleeping medications and alcohol. Not to be taken with certain medications for Parkinsons, depression, psychiatric or other emotional conditions.
Ranitidine (Zantac), an acid reducer, treats ulcers and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
Overuse risks: May lose effectiveness over time. Long-term acid suppressor use could lead to poor absorption of some forms of calcium.
Sources: Brian Strom, Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania; Winston Parris, Duke University Medical Center; Lisa McDevitt, Tufts Medical Center; Sarah Anderson, University of Colorado School of Pharmacy; Ausim Azizi, Temple University School of Medicine.
Other drugs also contain acetaminophen, such as over-the-counter cold remedies (Nyquil, Dayquil) and prescription Percocet and Vicodin. But many people aren't aware of this, and it can lead to overdoses.

1 year later: my 2010 prospect list vs. BA's
This is to open up some discussion more than anything. Over the past couple of seasons, I've begun to wonder whether the experts are really that great at formulating rankings. They are undoubtedly good at what they do, which is compiling tons of minor league baseball content and opinions and scouting reports. But regardless of their resources and knowledge, I am not always pleased with their final Prospect rankings. And its not only BA, its pretty much every expert opinion. I know they have to keep these interesting, and they have a lot of different talking heads involved. A lot of scouts' opinions to take into account, etc. But after a year, I think my list stands up quite well in comparison. Granted, it is only a year, but this is just for fun. I recognize that we won't be able to truly judge these lists for probably another 10 years or so. Last year was the first year that I spent a great deal of time on my own list though [40+ hours researching/compiling/watching vid/etc], so its the first time I've felt that I had a good shot at making a quality ranking that might stand the test of time.
I always publish my list 2 or 3 weeks ahead of BA's, just to be sure I won't be influenced by their rankings. I do of course use some of their opinions to judge a prospect, but mostly only Callis and Manuel. I also rely on Sickels, Piliere, Law, and Eisenberg. And even some of the members here.
here is the url to my fanpost from last year:
The rankings seen are my own, then I listed BA's, and then the result. a P=push, W= win, L=loss, lol= when they matched my ranking and N/A=injured player or really unsure.
for the results, I figured something like this:
for rankings 1-20 :: anything 3 spots or better is a difference, or a win/loss.
21-50:: 4 spots or more.
51-75:: 5 spots or more.
76-100:: 6 or more.
And this is kind of a loose system, since it isn't always clear whether a prospect should be higher/lower. A lot of it is personal opinion. So if you see some results that are a 'Push' even though the difference is great enough for a result, it's because I was unsure of which way to go or because the range/difference is right in-between where I'd rank the prospect.
I also didn't weigh the results, meaning a win is a win, a loss is a loss. Although I probably should have, as Wil Myers alone might have made my score very impressive.
At the end of the rankings, I have the final tally.
And feel free to provide some feedback... if you feel I was too generous/strict with any of the results. Its not always so clear/straightforward as to whether a prospect deserved to be ranked higher/lower based on his current prospect standing in 2011.

daveh33's Top 125 Prospect List for 2011
I approach the list as a GM approaching a draft. "Take the best player available". This list is more "value-based" than anything else. ie- I am looking for Wins. [WAR]. But I do believe in balance, so many factors are considered as I rank a prospect : ARL, upside, ceiling, floor, physical ability, potential physical growth or decline, positional strength/scarcity, swings, throwing motions, plate discipline, scouting reports. All of these factors are considered, and then I start to compile. I have not counted, but I would guess that I spent around 40 hours on this list. Not all at once, but over the past two months. I liken the process to panning for gold. I sit on the edge of the prospect river and I dip my pan into the river and grab a clump of dirt and shake it down until it settles.
stats are taken from firstinning.com, and I probably won't list anything under 100 PA or 40 IP [SP], 15 IP [RP].
I stopped listing stats after the top 50.
I gather most of my information from watching video, reading scouting reports, analyzing stats... and also partaking of the opinions of John Sickels, Jim Callis, John Manuel, Keith Law, Frank Piliere, Alex Eisenberg, Mike Newman, and many of the fine members of this site.
I added some quick comments on the top 125, and on a few of the Honorable Mentions.

The Fantasy/Keeper League Thread
I think one Fanpost would be better than cluttering up the fanposts sidebar with tons of different fantasy league posts. Just rec this one and it will stay at the top for a good while. Most of the keeper leagues seem to be starting up now, so if anyone needs new owners, just start a new post for it, and people can reply to your individual thread for it. [much like how we vote for individual players in the community list]
I'll post the first reply as an example. owners can feel free to rec it if they feel it is a good league. or rec the individuals looking to become new owners if you have played with them before/currently and they are active players.

OTTOTD: PBrady, can u make yr fantasy basketball team less terrible?
you are killing the credibility of the 69's division, son.
11/9 OTTOTD: The Marquis de Sade is a dog.
backgrounnd: Marquis comes from the fertile mind of the late Belgian director, writer, novelist and theatrical director Roland Topor. Topor also co-wrote and designed the great French animated sf film Fantastic Planet (1973) and wrote the novel that became the basis of Roman Polanski’s marvellously paranoid The Tenant (1976). Topor can also be seen playing Renfield in Werner Herzog’s Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979).
Marquis could be described as a crossbreed between Quills (2000) and Meet the Feebles (1990). It is a re-enactment – albeit a loose one – of the life of the Marquis de Sade and the French Revolution – all conducted by puppets, puppets that are decidedly less than Disney or Henson-like. The fact that one of the central characters in the film is the Marquis’s talking penis should give one an idea of where the film is centred.

sanctity in french means cinq titty means five tits.
A cannibal cult mother who tortured her son in a locked cellar while relatives skinned him and forced him to eat his own flesh has been jailed for nine years.
Klara Mauerova, 31 - a member of a sinister religious cult and her sister Katerina led the sickening torture of her eight-year-old son Ondrej and his ten year-old brother Jakub.
A court in Brno in Czech Republic heard how relatives partially skinned Ondrej and forced him to eat his own flesh.

Klara Mauerova, right, has been jailed for nine years for abusing her sons
The judge also jailed Katerina, 35, for ten years for her role in the sickening abuse.
The two boys had told judges how their mother and relatives had stubbed cigarettes out on their bare skin, whipped them with belts, and tried to drown them. They were also sexually abused and forced to cut themselves with knives.
The terrified youngsters said they were kept in cages or handcuffed to tables and made to stand in their own urine for days.

The sick sisters - both members of weird religious cult the Grail Movement - refused to reveal why they tortured the brothers.
But state prosecutor Zuzana Zamoravcova said: 'Their aim was to make the boys blindly serve their religious goals.'
Judge Pavel Goth said as he sentenced the women: 'Their aim was to create a person with a completely broken will. Ondrej and Jakub were repeatedly psychologically and physically tyrannised and held in locked rooms.'

Another defendant, 34-year-old Barbora Skrlova, was also jailed for five years for her part in the torture. Three others who took part in the abuse were also given jail terms.
Hana Basova, 28, and Jan Skrla, 25, were sentenced to seven years each while another man, Jan Turek, was jailed for five years.
Skrlova had posed as an innocent 13-year-old girl when police arrived to free the boys. She later ran away to Norway but was traced earlier this year by Czech police who brought her back to face trial.

Mauerova at first admitted abusing her children but she said she had been manipulated by her sister Katerina and Skrlova.
All three of them had been part of the Grail Movement cult which claims to have hundreds of followers in Britain as well as tens of thousands of others world wide.
The sick abuse was discovered when a neighbour installed a TV baby monitor to keep watch on his new daughter.
But it picked up the signal from an identical monitor next door showing one of the victims beaten, naked and chained in a cellar.
Mauerova had installed it so she could gloat over her victims' suffering from the comfort of her kitchen.
The defendants are expected to launch an appeal

daveh's Revised Top 150 prospects 2010
First time I've done a Revised list, but as The Dude so put it:
"I dropped off the money exactly as per... look, man, I've got certain information, all right? Certain things have come to light."
To compare with my top 110 from October / to see what things have come to light, the link is right here
I approach my lists as a GM drafting for my team. "Take the best player available". Whether that player is in short-season A-ball or AAA, its a balance. Yes, a guy in AAA has possibly beat some of the injury nexus and has proven he can play up to the AAA level, so it is taken into consideration, as are: Tools, Skills, Projectability, Body, Athleticism, ARL, Scouting Reports, and of course The Numbers. [i also love upside].
Been working on this for about a month. tweaking along as I discover new video and new scouting reports.
Since this is John's site, and as a way to compare, I've included John's grades next to their names. I'll throw in a comment or two along the way.
Best top 10 list/ranking of all time
We need to contact this guy and get him to start a minor league blog. I want/need top 30s for every team.
Where Alonso.

98Koshien deserves its own fanpost
never lol'd so hard from a youtube vid.
i did do a quick search for 'koshien' here and found only one thing relating to a stadium [i'd guess in hapan].
so unless this was vaguely discussed in an ottotd or something, i don't think many / any of u have seen it
this is one of the top 10 funniest things i;ve ever seen. and i seen a lot of funny things. many funny things. i don't want to build it up too much for u, maybe this just hits my sense of humor sweet spot, i d k. but this srsly rules hard. can't believe i've never seen this before or even been discussed before on a baseball blog. so very worth yr 2 minutes. / love japan. / want this game.

daveh's top 111 prospects for 2010
Been working on this list for about a month now, tweaking/reading up on these guys. I was going to wait til the AFL was over to finalize it, but I think not much will change between now and then. I mostly just wanted to get reports on Strasberg, Scheppers, and Castro. the way K Law talks about Castro, it sounds like he might put him top 20. while i am not going that high on him, I am pretty impressed by what's been said about him.
I used 130 PAs instead of ABs as the cutoff.... by accident at first, then by choice [it just seems weird to me that a couple walks determine it] ... so thats why Gamel and Escobar aren't here... I don't feel strongly for or against their statuses, so i guess if i were to list them, they'd be about where other people would have them.
I approach my lists as though I am a GM drafting for my team. 'Take the best player available' approach. Until proven, they are all prospects, so I do tend to value upside more-so than others. Parker and Scheppers would both be top 20 if not for their injury concerns.

2nd tier Catcher smackdown
I did enjoy the smackdowns... but I think it'd be cool to include more than just a couple names.
My "top" tier is Posey, Montero, Santana, Norris, and Flowers. So I'm including the next 10 names at the C spot. Fact-based discussion strongly encouraged.
My 2010 Top 100 list is almost done, but I have to admit that catcher is the hardest to gauge, so I look forward to seeing the results/discussions out of this one.

the daveh top 40 8/9/09
I approach my lists as if I'm an MLB GM at a draft. I do of course take advanced leagues and ARL into account, but I lean heavily towards a "take the best player available" approach... So I often have younger/high upside players ranked higher than most. This is just something to keep in mind when you see an 18-year-old pitcher in low-A ranked above a 23-year-old slugger in AA.
One other thing I tend to favor is body-type. yes, there are always exceptions [the Lincecums, Oswalts, Pedroias], but it is not the norm, so I often tend to favor the taller/bigger/projectable types.
None of the players on my list are in MLB as of 8/6/09 when I started double-checking rosters. So don't cry foul when you don't see Feliz, Matusz, and Tillman top 10, because they would have been.

How many 21 year olds ever OPS'd 1.000 over a season in mlb?
I don't know of a site that lists them. just from looking up several possibilities on baseball-reference stats... I see that A rod and Ted Williams both did it in their age 20 seasons [Ted did it again in his age 21 season]. Pujols did it at age 21. Are they it?
Not saying Justin is a lock to keep up this hitting, as I'm sure he's gonna hit another rough patch before the season ends... but its fun to speculate. he and Mauer have been keeping me real excited in May. I don't know about Mauer hitting .400... but I think Justin has a legit shot at OPSing 1.000 this season.
whoa. Ask Friedman who he wants play him for when his movie deal gets the green light
whoa. brad pitt to play billy beane?
whoa now.
found this on imdb:
Has there ever been a movie where a baseball GM was the protagonist? [Especially starring someone of Pitt's celebrity] I can't think of one, though my baseball movie history isn't the best. And this makes me wonder when "A Ray of Light: The Andrew Friedman Story" starring Clive Owen will get picked up. ?? I'd work for free to make that a reality.
