McDaniels praised Thompson's work after Sunday's game, pointing out that he started 52 consecutive games for Cal, a school record. "Every time he gets an opportunity, he makes the most of it, and I think that's what you want a rookie to do," McDaniels said. "The biggest thing to me is he keeps standing out in the kicking game — on the kickoff team, punt team. He's made some big tackles down there. I'm very pleased with his performance, and he continues to be a standout for us."

UC sports panel says Berkeley must control costs

This doesn't sound too good. As we've all suspected, Cal Athletics needs to get its books in order and it might mean cutting some of the many sports that we compete in.

Lorenzo Alexander Giving Back

Here's a nice DailyCal story on Lorenzo Alexander giving back to the community. There's also a nice CSN story about another example of him giving back in the DC/Virginia area. Way to represent Cal, 'Zo!

Missing Robert Buan's Post Game Show

Is it just me, or does anyone else miss Robert Buan doing the A's post-game show?  Granted, my sample size of listening to Chris "Towny" Townsend is small, but I listened for a bit after the game...

A's pick up Conor Jackson

For those of you who haven't seen this news, the Oakland Athletics traded for former California Golden Bear Conor Jackson earlier today. Jackson made his A's debut in Chicago's Wrigley Field on Tuesday night and will be the A's regular left fielder until Coco Crisp comes off of the DL. A big "welcome back to the East Bay" to Conor Jackson!

19 Sports Post Gains in Latest APR Scores

This is great news. The Golden Bears continue to improve on academics. Many thanks to AD Sandy Barbour for making this an emphasis of the athletic program at Cal. Monty has worked a miracle with the Men's Basketball team.

Rugby Game 5: Cal vs. Harvard

Cal wins 42-0. This quote is awesome: Harvard finally gets it deep into Cal territory with a minute left; Cal's linout at the 15 goes nowhere, and doesn't have to. Mercifully the clock runs out.

Ken Griffey Jr. Retiring

It was only a matter of time.

Forsett: Most Elusive RB in the NFL?

Check it out, I wrote this comment on the recent front page story on Forsett: The one remarkable thing that I found in watching highlights of Forsett’s play in Seattle is his uncanny ability to reach the first down marker whenever he touches the ball. Regardless of what down it is or whether he’s running or catching the ball, I noticed that more often than not, when the play is whistled dead that Forsett has achieved a first down. And even more remarkable is that he’s usually hit by the first defender well before the first down marker, yet he finds a way to get that extra yardage to buy the team four more chances. That doesn’t seem like something you can coach — I think a lot of it is field vision and having a nose for the "yellow line". I wonder if there’s some statistic somewhere that tracks a player’s ability to achieve a first down depending on where he is on the field at the time he receives the ball — that would be interesting. And then I find this story. Cool.

Tyson Ross Sparkles in A's Debut

For all you A's fans out there, Tyson Ross, formerly of Bishop O'Dowd and the University of California made the Oakland A's roster this year as a non-roster invitee and jumped from AA all the way up to the big leagues based on his Spring training performance. He pitched for the first time in a big league game tonight against the Mariners at the Coliseum (2.1 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 2 K) and struck out the last batter to end the 6th and also struck out Ken Griffey Jr. Awesome stuff from a former Golden Bear!

Cal 2010 Football Season Ticket Renewal Page

Do you notice the absence of any essential position player on this page? Let's see, we've got our premiere running back (check), our starting middle linebacker (check), our leading wide receiver (check), and our hard-hitting safety (check). I guess Tedford was serious about opening up the QB position to competition this fall. It'll be interesting to see how it goes. Will Bancroft Clothing be stocking #13, #9, #10 or #16? -- what a dilemma.

Harbaugh should've known this stat when he decided to leave the fate of his team in the hands of Pritchard on 4th and 2 with 2:28 left in the 4th quarter in the Sun Bowl.

Tiger Woods hurt in car crash, released from hospital

Must be the hangover from being booed at the Big Game last week. What was he doing leaving his house at 2:20 am? And how can you get into an accident with a fire hydrant and a tree by "pulling out of your driveway"? Go figure.

A picture is worth a thousand words.

Like the look of this?

So tell me the honest truth, given the injuries to Mark Kotsay, Dan Johnson and possibly Loaiza, do you like the look of this 25-man roster heading into opening day?: Batting Order: Kendall - C ...

Am I Crazy?

Please tell me if I'm crazy, but would it be worth it to consider Justin Duchscherer for a starting role?  It sounds like he's interested in trying to start again and with Kennedy and Embree from...
