Pride Of Detroit Anyone up for joke time before the season starts?

We also have done this post before but hey jokes are always fun to read and hear. So on with the show: This well off couple were going to have a huge party this 1 night. The couple were talking, and the wife says I would like to serve those mushrooms that grow wild out behind the barn, do you know if they are poisonous or not? And the husband had no idea so he say's I have an idea, why don't we cook up a little batch of them and feed them to the dog, if he does not get sick then they must be good right? Well they both agree that this is a good idea and proceed to do just that, cook up the mushrooms and feed the dog. Well after the dog eats them he just runs off like nothing is wrong, so the couple decides to serve them. Later that night as the party is going strong, the maid comes running into the main room just crying hysterically. the woman of the house says what's wrong? The Maid trying to talk threw here tears states that the dog is laying dead as can be out by the road. Well the lady immediately goes and calls the doctor to have him come pump everyone's stomach out. After this is done, the couple are talking to the maid and are trying to calm her down, and the maid says I just can't be leave it . . .That car had to be going at least 50MPH when it hit the dog. . . . Gotta love it!

Pride Of Detroit Time to revisit an old thread. Lets all say hello again.

About once or twice a year here at the POD we have an introduce yourself thred. And I am noticing that the bandwagon is filling up quick this year with a lot of new guys. So I think we should just do this again before the season starts. Introduce yourself and give a little something about yourself just so we all can be a big ol' happy family with all the new guys. I think by now all of us know our resident guru Sean, who is a current student at the University of Michigan and the promoter of the best damn Lions site on the planet. If you want let us know when you became the Lions fan that you are.

Pride Of Detroit NFC North Fan Favorites lets get Defensive

OK guys, I know i have to still do the write ups for the RB's that I let run for 2 weeks, but that's because we were moving. We are now into our new place and in the process of unpacking everything, so I will get to that very soon. Since we have so many new guys around now, I am going to give a quick run down of our rules once again. I am asking for your top 5 FAVORITES and I repeat FAVORITES at a certain position please list them in the exact order that you want them in because #1 gets 5 points; #2 gets 4 points and so on down the line. I ask that you only vote 1 time if you vote a second time I will take your second vote. Were do we want to start on the D side of the ball? Well since this is my hair brain idea, I want to start at the back end of the defense. This week lets start with the Safety position, and may the best man with 4 fingers on 1 hand win.

Pride Of Detroit NFC North fan favorites RB Edition

All righty guys, by now you know the drill. I want your top 5 FAVORITES at the RB position. Please once again vote 1 time and please make sure you list your FAVORITES in order from top to bottom because #1 gets 5 points #2 gets 4 points and so on and so on. Now being that this is the  POD I totally expect Barry to get the most votes but hey I could be wrong. So with no further A do let's get this thing going. If we get more than 30 actual voters I will most likely do big write ups like I did for the QB's. And since there have been so many good RB's over the course of time picking only 5 may be the hardest of all the lists we have did so far.

Pride Of Detroit NFC North Fan favorites QB's Part 2

Well guys here is our top two of our fan favorites at the quarterback position. I do want to add that with our top 5 at the QB position we may have every single record that is held on our list. The only record I can think of that is not held by our top 5 is most SB wins and that is held by Terry Bradshaw who made the honorable mentions list in the last part of the write ups. So with no further ado here we go.

With 84 votes collected we have our #2 quarterback, who is one of my all time favorites. I don't think this QB needs no real introduction, all I have to say is "The Catch" and I think even the young guys know I am talking about one Joe "Cool" Montana of the San Francisco 49'ers. Joseph Montana Jr. ( a reacquiring theme "Jr.") was born on June 11, 1956, in a town called New Eagle, Pennsylvania. He grew up like most children in Pennsylvania, in a coal mining town south of Pittsburgh. A direct descendent of Italian immigrants his family bounced around many times in his childhood. An interesting fact about his childhood is that his father lied about his age (then 8) and told the pee-wee league he was 9 so that he could play football, even though Basketball was his favorite sport as a child. In high school Cool Joe was a 3 sport star for his school and actually lead his school to a Class AAA basketball championship while being named an all-state player. While doing all that in one sport, he was also the starter for his Junior and Senior years on the football team at the QB position. His senior year in school he was named to the Parade's All American team. Unfortunately, he chose to go to Notre Dame for his collegiate years starting in the fall of 1974. In his sophomore year Joe was not good enough to start at the beginning of the season so he was put on the 2nd string. This lasted until a game against North Carolina, where the story of Cool Joe actually starts; With the Tar Heals leading 14-6, Montana spent all of 1:02 seconds of the game on the field and in that time, he amassed 129 passing yards and brought ND back to win the game 21-14. The very next game Joe was back on the bench and ND was down again to Air Force 30-10, when in steps "Joe Cool" and he proceeded to bring back the Fighting Irish to a 31-30 victory. The head coach told the athletic director at that time it was the greatest comeback he had ever seen. In those 2 games Joe Montana cemented his legacy as a clutch quarterback. His senior season Joe lead the Fighting Irish to a NCAA National Championship even though he started out the year as the 3rd string QB due to injuries he sustained his junior year. In 1979, the SF 49'ers drafted Joe Montana in the 3rd round and he ended up the 82nd pick overall. As a rookie he played in all 16 games but only threw 23 passes as Steve DeBerg's back-up. This become ironic as Joe "Cool" replaced him in both SF and KC later in his career. The 80's were dominated by the 49'ers and Bill Walsh's West Coast Offense. This perfectly suited Joe, as he never had the strong arm of say Dan Marino and he didn't have the feet to run wild like Steve Young would later in the decade. What Joe had was a calmness about him that to this day is untouched by all QB's who have played since. In 1982 we go to the game of games in Joe's history; a game against the hated Dallas Cowboys at Candlestick Park in the NFC Championship. With time running out and the game on the line, the 49'ers are on the Dallas 6 yard line. The play develops as thus:At the snap,Montana drops back and rolls to his right, pursued by a wildly charging Ed "Too Tall" Jones. As the 6'9" Jones leaps and fully extends his arms over his head,Montana, trapped against the sideline, falling backwards and throwing off his backfoot, someway, somehow, though the arms of the menacing monster Jones, manages to toss up an off-balanced throw to the back of the end zone. In a frozen moment, caught forever in time, Dwight Clark makes a leaping stab for the ball for the game winner, which will be forever known simply as "The Catch". Now, because of that play it allowed the 49'ers to play in the first ever SB to be held in Detroit, against the Bengals, where Joe had a pedestrian outing, ending the game 14 of 22 for 157 yards with one passing TD and 1 running TD to lead the 49'ers to their first Super Bowl victory. Even allowing for these ho-hum numbers, he was named Super Bowl MVP that year, an accomplishment he would land two more times in his tenure with the 49'ers. In 1983, a year all Lions fans will remember, in a divisional playoff game against our Detroit Lions, Joe Cool struck again. I remember the game like it was only yesterday. The Lions were torching the 9'ers in terms of yards and score, when Joe ripped off his jersey and a Superman S appeared on his chest once again. Down by 6 with 1:23 remaining in regulation, Joe Cool had the ball at the Lions 14 yards line and then threw a perfect pass to Freddie Solomon for the victory over our Billy Sims lead Detroit Lions. In 1993 he was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs, with another HOF player named Marcus Allen in tow. While he never won a SB with the Chiefs an interesting fact is here to read. Before he ever played a down in KC, they offered him 3 jerseys with different numbers on them. The first jersey had #3 on it:his old ND number. The second jersey, was #19 the same number he wore when he played little league. The 3rd jersey was #16, the retired number of former Chief great, QB Len Dawson, who kindly offered Joe his retired number, but being the class act that Joe was, he politely turned down Len because he thought he wasn't worthy of the number. When Joe finally retired he had the second best passer rating of all time and he was only surpassed by Steve Young who had replaced him in S.F. He holds many post season records such as most career TD's (45), games with a passer rating over 100.0 (12). He is second in passing yards 5,772 and in games of 300+ passing yards; he finished first but Kurt Warner has since tied him. Perhaps, in the finish, the biggest accomplishment of his playing days is that he is the only QB to win 3 Super Bowl MVP's. What more can I say about the man, no the myth that is Joe "Cool" Montana Jr.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      With that being said we move on to our top dog in our poll of all time fan favorites at the QB position. This man collected a smooth 91 votes and received more votes from more guys than any other QB on our Poll. Now this man is a current player who is possibly going to be the all time best QB in NFL history when he is done playing the game. Since he came into the league, this QB has done more without hiking the ball than most QB's do in an entire lifetime. I am referring to the one, the only Peyton Williams Manning (Hey no Jr.). The "Cerebral Assassin" was born March 24 1976, a product of the Bayou, meaning he was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was a standout from the word go. His high school accomplishments include 92,and 93 Class 2A MVP. In 1993 he was just all everything in Louisiana football, receiving the Gatorade Circle of Champions and High School player of the year Award, Atlanta TD club's Bobby Dodd Award, N.O. QB player of the year, and the Columbus Ohio TD Club Player of the Year Award. Needless to say, he was all that  before he ever stepped foot on the field for the Volunteers. Peyton never seemed to be able to get Tennessee to the top during his college days. He always put up good numbers for the Vol's but they just seemed to always get tripped up. As a senior, he won almost every Award imaginable except one, which we will explore in a minute. Like I said, he won numerous Awards his senior year and here they are in case you don't remember all of them: Consensus All American,Maxwell Award,Davie O'Brian, Johnny Unitas, and the Best College Player ESPY Award. There were two that in the end eluded him, the National Championship (Thank you Michigan) and the Heisman Trophy, won by a local guy who chomped on a rose after beating the Buckeyes that year. Yes Manning came in second to the last defender to win the Heisman and that is Charles Woodson. Now Peyton was drafted first overall by his current team the Indianapolis Colts in 1998, and in his rookie year he threw for 3,739 yards with 26 TD's. He set 5 different rookie records that year and has not looked back since.Where do I even start with Peyton? i suppose I could start with the 1999 season, yeah in his sophomore slump year he only passed for his first 4,000 yards season, going on to a 13-3 record, only to be bounced by the Titans in the Divisional Championship game. In 2001 the Peyton Manning lead Colt's introduced the signature no-huddle offense that they still use today. It was the same year that his coach Jim Mora uttered his most famous words ever "Playoff's? Don't talk to me about playoffs. Are you kidding me? Playoffs??"  Now in 2002 the Colts brought in a new coach who helped the Colts become the dominant team that they are today. Tony Dungy was brought in to replace Mora and the Colt's have not looked back since.Peyton has so many Awards I am not going to name them all but I will put down a few of them. 4 time MVP ('03,'04,'08,'09). 11 Pro Bowl selections, 5 first team All-Pro, 3 second team All-Pro's as well. Continuing, 6 AFC Offensive POY Awards,2005 Walter Peyton Man of the Year, 2005 Pro Bowl MVP, 2007 Super Bowl MVP. Peyton may hold every single Colts record possible by a quarterback, I can not sit here and type all of his accomplishments because you guys would probably fall asleep or lose interest about 1/3 of the way threw the list. All I'm going to say is if you come across a question about Colt's history at the QB position, Peyton Manning is going to be the answer to about 99% of the questions. If any Qb has a shot at breaking Brett Favre's iron man streak it is going to be Payton Manning. Since he won the starting job back in 1998 he has never missed a game and is currently at 208 straight games. Now i can't just talk about Peyton without mentioning his favorite weapon as a young Colt and that is Marvin Harrison; they together hold 5 major QB/WR tandem records. Most completions/receptions 953,passing yards 12,756, passing/receiving touchdowns 112, season records are passes/receptions 143 and passing/receiving yards 1,722. Now, it turns out there is more to Manning than just football. He is also one hell of a class act. Just after becoming a professional, he started the Peyback Foundation that helps kids with disadvantages in 3 states, Louisiana, Tennessee, and Indiana. He also did prodigious work in New Orleans, volunteering in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. He and his brother Eli assisted in delivering 30,000 pounds of water,Gatorade, baby formula, diapers, and pillows to the people of that region. Love him or hate him. Peyton is one classy guy who is funnier than heck when he does TV commercials or guest hosts on SNL. A little known historical fact Peyton's great great granddaddy, his namesake Colonel Peyton Manning, was General Robert E. Lees quartermaster for the Army of Northern Virginia during America's Civil War.                                                                                                                                                                                                           As a extra bonus to this weeks poll I am going to give you the top voter getter from the days of old. I don't know if I just have a soft spot for the Colt's or what, but the top vote getter from a different age of football is Johnny Unitas, who received 27 votes. Now I can't talk to you guys about how the guy was on the field because he played before I was even born but I can give you a little something something about the man who was "Mr.Colt" before Peyton came along. John Constantine Unitas was born May 7, 1933 and passed away Sept 11, 2002 (damn 9/11 again). He was affectionately known as "The Golden Arm" and he played in three different decades, holy crap, three decades. I guess there is at least one record that Peyton does not own as of yet. . . .Johnny U holds a record for throwing TD's in 47 consecutive games, which occurred from 1956-1960, and that record remains unsurpassed as of the end of last year. Now Unitas was drafted by the Steelers in the 9th round but without ever taking a snap at the QB position, even in practice, was cut by then coach Walt Kiesling because he thought Unitas was too dumb to ever play the position. To be fair to the Steelers, they did have 3 other QB's on the team that were established and one of them was named Ted Marchibroda. Because he couldn't catch on with any NFL team, he played on a semi-pro team called the Bloomfield Rams for $6 dollars a day on the weekends, while supporting his family in the construction business. I am not going to get into a ton of his legacy but I am going to talk about one particular season for a minute. In 1958 the Colts won the NFL Championship by defeating the Giants 23-17 in a sudden death overtime. It was the first overtime game in NFL history, and is considered as the "greatest game ever played". The game was nationally televised by NBC, and has been credited for sparking the rise of popularity during the 60's and is often cited as the first modern NFL game. Unitas was the first QB to throw for 40,000 yards, despite playing in an era where teams only played 12 or 14 games. He was also the first to throw for 30 touchdowns in a single season. His 47 game TD streak is a record that is considered by many to be the equivalent to Joe DiMaggio's 56 game hitting streak. After retiring from the game, he remained with the Colt's as a color commentary for the NFL on CBS in the 70's.When owner Robert Iysay betrayed all Colt fans by moving the Colt's to Indianapolis in the middle of the night, (I can still see the trucks rolling threw the snow) Unitas was so outraged that he immediately cut all ties with the organization. Even though his #19 is still retired by the Colt's, he begged the Football Hall of Fame to remove his display unless they listed it as belonging to the Baltimore Colt's. Unitas was one of the most vocal people in attempting to get another team to play in Baltimore and after the Ravens started football operations,Johnny Unitas was seen on their sidelines frequently. It says in his bio that every single time they showed Johnny on the Jumbo Tron the fans would give him a standing ovation.  What can you say about a man who loved the town that took him as their hero? When the NFL celebrated it's first 50 years, Unitas was voted teh best to ever play the game, by the players who played against him. Johnny U you will forever be known as the best QB by many till the day they die. Forever live #19 John Constantine Unitas, the original passing QB!

Pride Of Detroit Here are our Favorites QB style part 1

And the results are in my friends. I am happy to report that we finished with 49 voters at the end of week 1 and selected an eclectic group of favorites as POD and Friends Top QB's of All time. Our favorite gunslingers range from the 1980's all the way up to current players on our top 5 list. And with no further ado, I present our top 5 in reverse.

#5 Kicking off our list is a Lion killer who we have all had the unpleasant fortune to see stomp the stuffing out of our Lions on way to many occasions. I am going to put some of his stats up but I am very concerned he may be back to haunt us again and break even more of his own records. That's right; we are talking about the one and only Brett Favre. The most durable of all the QB's to ever play the game; Brett Lorenzo Favre was a 20 year veteran of the NFL and holds just about every record possible for a QB.He was originally drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in 1991 as the 33rd overall pick. He was then traded to the Green Bay Packers the following off season. From 1992-2007 he steered the Packers to 2 Super bowl appearances, and 1 win. Most impressively, he was the first NFL player to win 3 straight AP MVP awards. One of Favre's more important records is his "Iron Man" streak with 285 consecutive starts and if you count playoff games, it rises to a mind boggling 309. that number predates the beginning of the 2010 season, very impressive all on it's own. Like I said he owns almost every single QB record that is kept, so to put them all on here would be over kill. Anyone who has ever seen the man play the game knows that Brett never lost his enthusiasm for the game;he played the game like it was his first game, each and every single week.Whether you loved him or hated him,Brett Favre will go down as 1` of the top 5 QB's of all time just on his records alone. However, there was more to Favre than just his stats. He was "Captain Comeback" for 19 of his 20 years as a starter and during that time he dashed so many of our hopes for victory as NFCN fans that he ended up as hated outside of GB as he was cherished within. As was discussed a few weeks ago i.e. #20 being retired for the entire NFL, perhaps #4 should be right next to it. Outside of Football, Brett Favre was just as impressive as he was on the field. He started the "Favre 4 hope Foundation" which is a supporter of the Make a wish foundation of Mississippi and in 2010 made a personal commitment of $1.2 million dollars, with $100,000 going straight to the make a wish foundation. Love him or hate him, Brett Favre is one of a kind and gave football a good guy to root for for 20 years.                                                                                                                                                                 #4 on our list of NFC North favorite QB's is a hypersonic gunslinger who needs no real introduction to any fan. Dan Marino the ultimate cannon at the QB position was the holder of just about every record in the books, until Brett came along. Daniel Constantine Marino Jr. was born on September 15, 1961. He was one of the very few to start and play every single snap for the same team for his entire career. As the last of the QB's drafted in the great class of 1983 in the first round, Marino became one of the most prolific quarterbacks in league history, holding or having held almost every major passing record. I think Dan will always be remembered as the QB with the quickest release in the history of the game, with one of the most powerful arms ever. "Dan the Man" lead the Dolphins to the playoffs 10 of his 17 years as an NFL quarterback and was introduced into the Hall of Fame in the class of 2005. In his college years he lead the Pitt Panthers to the Sugar Bowl game his senior year but unfortunately lost to Southern Methodist  and the vaunted "Pony Express" with Eric Dickerson and Craig James. I mentioned how Marino was the last QB to be drafted in the first round in 1983 just to hash some old memories of the past. Here are the guys who were drafted in front of him:Ken O'Brian, Tony Eason, Todd Blackledge, and the 2 HOF'ers Jim "K-Gun" Kelly and the original "Captain Comeback" John Elway. That's some pretty nice names to be associated with. As a professional, one of his great accomplishments is he will be forever known as the first rookie QB to start in a Pro-Bowl game. The next year, his Sophomore slump year, Marino went on to break 6 NFL full-season passing records, including most TD passes (48), passing yards (5,084) and was voted MVP, and took the Dolphins to Super Bowl XIX. Unfortunately for Dan, he faced off against the San Francisco 49'ers and another HOF QB in Joe Montana, losing by the score of 38-16. That would be the great Dan Marino's only trip to the Super Bowl. It's sad that a man, who was at one time considered the greatest QB of all time, will only be known as the guy who played in "Ace Ventura Pet Detective" by some of the younger guys. My favorite memory of Marino was late in the game against the Jets and with no time left on the clock, he rushed his Dolphins to the line of scrimmage acted like he was going to spike the ball and instead tossed the game winning TD in a play that was forever known as "The Clock Play".                                                                                                                  #3 on our list of all time favorites is a personal favorite of min from the University of Michigan. I think just by the last statement you all know I'm talking about Tom Brady a.k.a Tom Terrific". Thomas Edward Patrick Jr. was born August 3, 1977 in San Mateo, California. I don't think I need to go into all that much about his college days since most of us are Big 10 fans and know he was the QB for a damn good set of Michigan teams that won both of their bowl games that Brady started. He held or still holds, Michigan records for most pass attempts and completions in a season (214) amongst others. As a Wolverine Brady won 20 of 25 games he started. Brady was drafted #199th, as a compensatory pick in which the Patriots were torn by 2 different QB's. One was Tom Brady and the other was Tim Rattay. I think the Patriots made the right choice.Sorry about your luck SF fans. Brady has many records to his name and here are just a few of them: Most passing TD's regular season 50 (yes 50 as in five oh) in 2007, and if you count the playoffs that year it brings his total to 56. Largest TD to pic ratio 9:1 (36TD's/4ints. 2010). Only Qb to start and win 3 Super Bowl's before his 28th birthday. Tom is the only QB that I know that has twice achieved a perfect QB rating of 158.3 and he did it at Miami, October21, 2007, and again last year against my Lions in that Thanksgiving day game November 25, 2010.I want to hate him for that last one but I just can't hate on a Michigan QB at any level. . . Yeah I'm a homer so what? Since Tom replaced Drew Bledsoe all those years ago he has been considered one of the elite quarterbacks in the league every year not counting his injury year in 2008. However you feel personally about Tom Brady he will go down as one of the best QB's of all time when his playing days are over and he is enjoying his life with SUPER hot Gisele Bundchen, I don't think he will be looking back. I am so envious of a guy who can let go of a true 9 and land a 10. . . .I hate you for that Tom.                                                                                                                                                              Well, that is it for the QB's in order from 5 to 3 but in case you guys are wondering how everyone else did in our weekly poll of fan favorites I will list them for you now as honorable mentions by us fans of the NFC North. #6 was Aaron Rogers who came on strong by all the GB faithful with 33 votes. At #7 John Elway who received 30 votes. At #8 was the top of the older generation and that is Johnny Unitas with 27 votes. At #9 we see our first Lion, Matt Stafford wound up with 25 votes but lets see how he does in a few years. At #10, a guy who I don't like and personally despise,Mike Vick who landed 20 votes. At #11 we have a 2 way tie with Fran Tarkenton and Kurt Warner both getting 19 votes. At #13 is Warren Moon who had 17 votes. #14 was Stevy Young with 15 votes. At #15 is the N.O. Saints hero, Drew Brees garnering 14 votes. At #16 we have the second of the older QB's in Bart Starr,"The O.G" QB of the Green Bay Packers who took 11 votes. #17 is one of my all time favorites in Dan Fouts who received 9 votes. At #18 we have a 4 way tie with Bobby (the curse) Lane,Terry Bradshaw,Ken Stabler, and Sammy Baugh who all got 8 votes. #22 we see a 3 way tie with Steve "Air" McNair (RIP), Randall Cunningham and Doug "Flakes" Flutie who all received 7 votes. #25 is Donovan"Chunkie Soup" McNab, and "K-Gun" Jim Kelly who had 6 tallies. At #27 we see Charlie Batch, Jamarcus Russel, Billy Kilmer and George Pimplton who all got 5 votes. At #31 we have a log jam from here on out, Garcia, Webb, Graham,Reich,DeBerg,Ryan, and the Hostetler who all received 4 votes. #38 we see Henne, Namath, Laundry,Staubach, Rothlisberger, and Vinnie Testaverde with 3 tallies. At #44 you have the likes of Shaub, Harringtin,Rivers,Kosar and Frerotte who all had 2 votes. And with 1 vote at #49 the following list of mentioned QB's is Freeman,Bledsoe,Hasselbeck,Hipple,McCoy,Bollinger,D Williams and Rex Grossman. there you have it guys the low down and dirty of our favorites at the QB position, later in the week you will see our top 2 at the QB position.

Pride Of Detroit NFC North Fan Favorites part #2

I am back with another addition to our weekly series of FAN FAVORITES. Last week we talked about the QB position, and this week I think we should look at the guys who do all the dirty work for the glory hounds, I mean QB's. Once again I am asking you for your top 5 favorites on the entire offensive line. With the big guys up front I am afraid that some of the young guns around here will not be able to even name 5 guys from each position on the O-line so we are going to take them all at once.  And once again please put them in order that you want them counted in. 1st gets 5 votes, 2nd gets 4 and so on and so on, just like last week.

When I think about the blockers there have been some very memorable guys over the course of time, and some you don't remember the names because they were grouped into 1 big bunch like say the vaunted (HOGS) from the Washington Redskins days of glory. So I am going to take single names and group names and bunch them together. Now here's the catch for this weeks poll. If you want to say a line like (The Hogs) please don't name an individual from that same line it just counts as 1 vote. Now I BEG some of the older voters that if you use a given name like that or a different one please put the team name next to them, I am pretty sure I know every group name that ever existed but to make sure I do just add the Team name and if you could throw me a bone and give a vague year of said line. And if you do pick a guy off of a vaunted line like say Russ Grimm or Joe Jacoby, I know they are members of the "HOG's" but some of the younger guys may not, so if you could be so helpful and give a line name when one is warranted I would appreciate that immensely.

Daily Norseman Open invite to visit the POD, make your Viking voice's heard

I have started a fan FAVORITES poll on each of the positions on the football field, I an 3 days into my series of polls and would like to get you guys over to the POD to vote on your ALL-TIME FAVORITES at said positions. i made a comment on 1 of your posts but as of now I still have not seen 1 viking fan comment. Now I am sorry to waist a fan post just to get you guys to come voice your opinions but there just isn't all that much activity on this site right now. I ask that when you do come over to the POD you come with an open mind and please vote on your 5 FAVORITES in the order that you want them to be counted. . #1 gets 5 points #2 gets 4 points and so on and so on.Well there you guys go, if you don't want old #4 and Rogers to win by a landslide get over there and get your votes in. . .P.Manning and Cool Joe Montana were the early vote leaders until I opened up the invite to the Packers fans. I figured with the lockout on and no real football related topics for any of us NFC North fans to talk about this was a perfect time to do a series like this. Thank you for coming over to the POD if you actually do.

I ask you to list your top 5 in order because #1 gets 5 points #2 gets 4 points and so on and so on.This series of polls by us fans will give us all something to do other than talk about Plexico, or how good our specific team looks at all these player held "practice's". Well guys there it is . . Please come over and get your voices heard, expect some ribbing but take it with a grain of salt we are all football fans first and foremost.

Pride Of Detroit POD Style . . . .I want your all time favorite QB's

OK guys you all know I'm not the best writer in the world here so this is my disclaimer first and foremost. With the lockout still on and not any news to really report or get from Sean, I am going to start a mini-series for us POD followers. I am inspired by Profiler and his EXCELLENT job with the Lions Legends series and thought I would go 1 step farther with it. So here we go guys.

This is how I think I am going to format this entire series. I want all of you to list your favorites in order from most favorite to least favorite player at said position. First place votes will get 5 points, second place 4 points and so on and so on. I am going to leave these posts running for 1 weeks time and at the end of said week I will tally up all the points(I hope) and do write ups the following week when the next poll is running.

This first weeks poll is going to be the QB position, now I don't care how you guys want to go about picking your ALL-TIME favorites at said positions. Some of us may want to go with Super Bowl rings. Some of us may want to go by stats. . I.E. Favre/Marino. Some of us may just want to be homers and pick their favorite players who were just good QB's on bad teams from any generation, so there it is guys this is what I am going to try and attempt to do over the next few weeks. I think we can have some fun with this and like I said it's our FAVORITES poll, not some yahoo that ranks RB's that are controversial. My only request is that you only vote 1 time, if you want to change your vote later in the day/week just make sure that you put that in your title of your response so I don't count your votes twice and basically nullify your first vote.

Pride Of Detroit Peterson = Berry 2.0??????

Last year at this time, me and a few others kept up a good fight for wanting 1 Eric Berry. Now I know Peterson is a CB but this guy is built more like a Safety than he is a traditional CB, and as I was falling a sleep I thought; man I wonder what it would be like to have Peterson in our backfield with Delmas. With the speed that Peterson has and the fact that he is a very good hitter and tackler even coming out as a Jr. he is that good.I mean I know we all feel that we need a CB and a LB more so than all other positions, but I keep hearing that the Cards are looking to try and trade out of that 5th pick. So since we could not pull a Madden move and grab him and Suh last year, why not trade up in the first round and grab Peterson to play next to Delmas. Peterson has all the skills needed to be an ELITE safety in this league. Body size. . .check, Speed. . . DOUBLE check, ball hawking abilities. . .TRIPLE check. by drafting Peterson and moving him to safety would give us the true speedster back there and it would give Gunny 1 hell of a weapon to move all over the place in terms of blitz packages and run support.

I am not as sold on this whole notion that we need to use our first 2 picks on the CB/LB positions as most of you are. I have stated a few times that while we may need more talent at these 2 positions they are not as dyer as most feel they are. Lets look at it this was. We had 2 guys come in off the street and play well. Unless your name is DET32. And these guys did it with no training camp or real idea of our defensive strategy. Assuming that we do go after Peterson to play our LS spot that would free up Spievey to go back to his natural position as CB, or stay at safety as an insurance policy for breathers and the injury bug. I also am not sold on this notion that we need a CB as bad as most of you are. Once again I go back to what we had last year;and the assumption that Houston will resign. Berry showed promise at that position, Houston and Phonz played good also, especially when you think about how young Phonz and Berry and Spievey are they are only going to get better with 1 more year under their belts 1 would think. We still have Vasher as an insurance policy, and we could still grab more depth during the draft or via FA when ever that truly does start. What do you guys think about this? We can always trade back in the second round for extra picks since we all seem to want more of those in this draft, I am not sure why when all I keep hearing from most of the peanut gallery how shitty this draft class is at the 2 most glaring needs on our roster, so why not just get what we can at those positions in the later rounds in this draft and wait till next year when I am sure there will be better talent at the LB position.

Pride Of Detroit This is for all you MOCK draft makers out here

Will you guys please open your eyes when you are drafting for these teams. In every one of these mock drafts you guys have been way off because you are not thinking about the individual teams. I'm not going to waist my time making 1 because it's futile, but you guys are all basing these mocks off of some kind of drinking game. Of the 12 teams drafting in front of the Lions these following teams are in DIRE need of QB's: All the top 5 teams you can make a case for needing a QB even Denver because they have a new coach and he may not like Tebag. SF also in DIRE need of a QB and Tennessee is in the same boat as them.Washington and Minnesota are also in DIRE need of a QB and when you count all of these teams that need a QB that count is up to 9 teams that need the services of a new signal caller and there are 4 potential franchise QB's sitting at the top of this draft, and yet every single one of you mock draft makers seem to keep drafting players that are not going to be game changers, so do me a favor and try to actually look at every teams needs before you make another mockumentary. That would be all and thank you for another mock that has the 49'rs taking a CB.

Pride Of Detroit With all this talk of wanting a 3rd WR

Why hasn't anyone mentioned Plexiglass Burress. The guy will be released June 6, and has had 2 years off, so those legs should be fresh. Pexico is another legit WR that is a home state product coming from Lansing, so we get 1 back. He is going to be a FA so we don't have to give up any draft picks and let's face it as long as he hasn't lost those hands of his, he would be a damn fine addition to the roster. He's 6'5" last played at 232, but I'm thinking he will be a little lighter than that and probably more muscle if he worked out in prison. Plexico has better hands than most and could real easily take the pressure off of Megatron and Nate could slide to the slot where he belongs. Well chime in and tell me what you all think.

Pride Of Detroit Why Why Why

I was just wondering why we have not talked about the Center position as a possibly pick at the #13 pick. I mean Dominic isn't exactly a spring chicken and he def does not open up any holes inside. Durable is his best attribute but he has never really been a dominant player at the C position. I was looking at the C position and possibly draft picks and LB University has a player to watch in Stefen Wisnewski he can not only play C but also played the G position at Penn State with Center being his better position. We have talked a lot about replacing Backus who is going into a contract year and is going to be 34 when the season starts, but Dom isn't getting any younger either. Does anyone out there think that if the top prospects are gone at LB/CB/DE/LT that we could possibly draft a C to replace the Dom. Now before you guys start with all the "he's not even a first round talent" talk I agree with you but what about the second round? I see that most of the scouting reports have him going in the second round so why not draft our LT and C of the future; heck I'll even take it 1 step farther and say let's get 2 BIG 10 players to fill those rolls. Grab a Badger in the 1st round and a (Nitney)Lion in the second round. Chime in and tell me what you all think, I'm sure most of you want D in the 1st and more D in the second so let's have some fun with my idea.

Pride Of Detroit The Fresh PRINCE of motown, and why he will be there when we draft.

First off guys all this talk about Prnce not being there is a guessing game by all of us. If the past is any reason to beleave that he will or wont be there then you can decide. Heres the past 10 drafts in terms of where the top 2 CB's were taken. In 2010 Hayden was drafted 7th by the Browns and then the next top CB wasn't drafted until the 20th pick by Houston. In 2009 the top CB was drafted 14th and that was Malcom Jenkins by the Saints and the next not drafted until 25th. In 2008 the top CB went 11th to Buffalo a Leodis McKelvin and then the next CB didn't get drafted until 16 and that was Cromartie to the Cards. In 2007 the top CB a Mr. Revis Island didn't get drafted until the 14th pick and his counter part was drafted 18th LEON HALL. In 2006 the top CB wasn't drafted until 15th a Ty Hill and the next CB was another Cromartie drafted at 19th. In 2005 Pac Man Jones was drafted 6th overall and then the next CB wa not drafed until the 23rd pick. 2004 is the last time that 2 CB's were drafted in the top 10 Deangelo Hall was drafted 8th and Dunta Robinson was drafted 10th overall. In 2003 coinsidentally there was only 3 Defencive players drafted in the top 13 that year and NONE of them were front 7 players Sean Taylor was the only other D-side of the ball player taken and that was 5th by the Redskins. In 2003 it happened also the cowboys took Terence Newman 5th and Seattle took Trufant at the 11th spot. In 2002 Quinten Jammer was drafted 5th by the Chargers and then the next CB wasn't drafted until 17th by the Raiders and that was Phillip Buchannon. 2001 the first 2 CB's were not drafted until 21st and 22nd they were Nate Clemmons and Will Allen. 2000 Deltha Oneal was the top CB taken and he didn't go until the 15th pick then Ahmed Plummer was drafted 24th that year. 1999 Champ Bailey was drafted 7th and Chris McCallister was drafted 10th so we are up too 3 times now. 1998 Woodson was drafted 4th overall and should have been drafted higher in my opinion and Duane Starks was also drafted 10th and may I say that both of those guys are future HOF players. 1997 This was a banner year by CB's being that 2 were drafted in the top 5 that year; Shawn Springs who was the Shizznit for a while was drafted 3rd overall and our Lions drafted Mr. Westbrook at the 5th spot. 4 CB's were drafted in the top 11 that year. 1996 Walt Harris was the only CB taken in the first round by the Bears and he was not drafted until the 13th pick. 1995 the top 2 CB's were drafted 22nd and 23rd respectively and they were Tyrone Poole and TY LAW. Now thats like 15 years worth of drafts and it has happened before that the top 2 CB's have been drafted earlier than the 13th spot I want to point out that in almost every 1 of those years their wasn't a lot of front 7 talent drafted in the top 20 picks much less the first round, for the most part they were drafts dominated by the offence. In this upcoming draft there is alot of talent coming out up front for the defence and there are quite a few teams looking for QB's as well as O-line help, so to think that Prince wont be there when we draft at lucky #13 is absurd. I did the research to shut up all the people that keep saying that Prince WONT be there when our Lions are on the clock.

Pride Of Detroit NOT A FOOTBALL related post here

But since I am not going to be near a computer for the next week and my time here at my cousins is almost over for the week. I just wanted to tell everyone of my brothers here at the POD: HAPPY HOLIDAYS reguardless of which 1 you celebrate. It has been a long year for us Lions fans and some of us had have alot of reasons to celebrate (yeah Camron) other than Football related. And some of us have had real bad things happen like a certain brother who lost his child recently, I hope we all remember not to drink too much egg nogg during this time of year and if we do we are smart enough to have someone else drive us home. Just remember that you are all in my thoughts as our Lions go down to Miami and beat the Phins this Sunday;or for you DET32 (Sondey)(you know I got mad love for ya bro); reguardless of who is at QB. OK that last shot was directed at you CLF, HAPPY HOLLIDAYS and on New Years Eve remember to have a drink on me since that is my birthday! 1 of the VERY few days I drink every year. . . .it's hard not to drink with me on my "special day" so cheers to all of you stay safe and I will try and shout out at least 1 more time this year but if not stay safe and I will talk to you all next year. Pope Sean Paul III keep the POD the best of all the blogging sites and I am outta here! your brother in Blue Scotty Davis

Pride Of Detroit Can we give some love

As I sit here today thinking that Stanton needs to put a restraining order on CLF (he may be stalking you), I think about this particular years D-line. It started in week 1 against the Bears and has been there all year, the goal line D that is as stingy as Charlie Rogers with his roach collection. Again yesterday the D put up another goal line stand that is just scary when you think about it, without looking it up I can't remember more than 2 times that our D has givin up a TD when the other team has had first and goal from inside the 5. While the tackling yesterday wasn't something I want to remember, the goal line D is. SUH/SLH/and Williams are just about unstoppable when all 3 are in there together, it goes to show that our depth on that front 4 is the best in the game this year, yes even better than the Giants. Anyhow I was just curious why we have not talked about that front as much as we should have this year and I want to thank those big guys in the middle for helping make our Lions fierce once again up the middle.

Pride Of Detroit Thank you MSU for those 2 great players

First off I'm still burning about the loss. Second how is Stanton still on the roster? We are not talking about a rookie here we are talking about a guy who has seen enough football to know that with less than 2 min left in a game and the other team is out of timeouts you simply eat the ball and take another 40 seconds off the clock. 1 part off the loss is right there; if not the entire loss. Third; how many penalties can 1 guy make that are just unexcusable? With hardly any time on the clock left Peterson goes and takes another stupid 15 yard penalty by hitting LT out of bounds. What kind of Football do they actually teach at MSU since neither of them seem to know how to play with the lead late in the game I'm guessing they play street ball in Lansing. 4th point is WHY couldn't SUH just squeeze that extra point try a foot to the left? If he hits that we are not sitting here today without the most foul taste in our mouths. Once again I just want to thank both the Spartians on our roster for the loss. GO BLUE! At what point are we going to start looking for another QB, 1 that is not a china doll. I love what Staff can do when he is actually out there but it now seems clear to me that he just isn't ever going to be out on the field for more than 8 games a year. How does a QB hurt is shoulder/collarbone from such a WEAK and I mean WEAK tap after he has already thrown the ball? Staff my advise to you is this= start drinking milk by the gallons! Get some calcium in those fragile bones so that we Lions fans can actually see you on the field without ice packs under your shoulder pads on a weekly basis.

Pride Of Detroit Where is our Lions Pride?

I can't beleave that not 1 of you has already made a post about SUHnomi and his monsterous start to this season? I mean we have a rookie DT who already has 2 or more sacks; not sure if they gave him credit, for the assist on KVB sack. On top of that SUH and Williams have sured up the middle of the D-line that for the past X-amount of years; got gashed time after time. Second issue is this: Who else got all geeked up when Jim almost killed that ref, for calling that one play a catch???? I really thought he was going to missle drop kick his striped ass. Then on top of that he threw the red flag so far out on the field that the infield fly rule went into effect. Yeah we might have lost another game on Sunday but I have not been this pumped up over 2 loses in my entire lifetime.  Go Lions and whip Favre's ass back into retirement.

Pride Of Detroit A new cub in the den

Hey guys I just wanted to share with all of my fellow friends here on the POD that on Thursday morning at 6:12 AM the newest Lions fan was born here in Saginaw. Camron Owen Stanley Davis! It would have been sweet if our Lions would have won this week for him but hey can't have everything I want in the same week. I know this isn't POST worthy but most(if not all of you) I consider family so I just wanted to pass along some good news. 7lbs 13 oz. 19 1/2" long and one big huge head of hair. So sometime in the near future you will see a new profile picture up for me once he grows into his 3-6 month cloths so I can get him into the Lions 1zee that I bought for him back when I found out my last child was going to be a boy! And for the record he smiled when daddy went nutz on that 75 yard reception by Best!!!!!!

Pride Of Detroit So I'm drinking the SUHl-aid this morning

Now guys First off I'm just geeked up to be on a computer and catching up on the latest news. So I'm sitting at my cousins and doing just that getting my FIX of Lions talk, and I started to think about how many of our Lions could actually be Pro-bowl bound this year. Now I know alot of things have to go just right for all os my predictions to come true but hey after listening to the first 2 pre-season games and seeing our Lions leading both games ON THE ROAD mind you when the first string was playing my mind was flooded with Honolulu Suh and Silver thoughts.

On Offence I can see Staffinfection going to the PB for the NFC yeah there is some talent and FAVRE will get 1 spot just because he is Favre but After Favre and Bree's the final spot could easily be Staff's, Rogers is due for a injury, and I am not a fan of ROMO, But IF and that is a big IF Staff can take the Lions to .500 or better this year he is going to be in the mix when the voting starts, Just look at what .500 did for Cutler whewn he was still in Denver.I see 1 of our Tackles going to the PB as well not saying it will be Backus even though I think it will be him, but ROCK Jansen has looked like he did when he was playing with Washington before the injury.Simms has a tougher road to get threw at Guard but he could very well be a PB guard for the NFC as well. Now if the 3 I have already mentioned can play at or above A average ability it will allow Raola a chance to not get bulled over and he could also have a outside chance at going to the PB, while I don't see it happening thanks to Peterman getting injured all the time Simms yes SIMMS could help make 1 side of our line PB bound. Megatron should be the top vote getter for the WR position if Staff and that front line can stay intact this year, there is just too many options on that side of the ball for any defence to try and shut down 1 guy like in the past couple of years. Sheffler or Grew could surprise some people also and jump in front of guys like Shianco, and another ancient 1 Tony Gonzo for the 3rd TE in the PB, I don't see either of our TE's jumping into the top 2 with Witten and Vernon Davis as my top 2 TE's in the NFC, but that's why they play the games!

Now we have a talent infused D to talk about, I can't see 1 of our DT's not going this year, yeah I'm talking about SUH who is going to have inflated #'s if Gunny keeps moving him around like he has been doing, I could actually see SUHnomi having close too double digit sacks this year. I really want to put KVB on this list but it is going to be very difficult for him to get in there when the NFC has a lot of talent at the DE potion, shit just in the North you could get all 3 of the starting DE's for the PB with Allen, Peppers and KVB. At LB we have 1 guy that could possibly go to the PB and that's Peterson, with this potent D-line he could have his best year (stat wise) that he has ever had if Gunny turns him lose. Ahhh lets not talk about CB's because it is going to take something that I don't see for this to happen here, Maybe and just MAYBE 1 of our CB's has a great year statisticly speaking and Bly goes but I really don't see it happening, who knows, with the pressure that the front 4 has been applying anything is possible. Now on to safety where our best chance to get 1 in on the D side of the ball is. The Preditor has to get healthy fast, he could have went last year in my opinion but I understand that people don't get to see the Lions since we have not been on a nationally televised game (other than TG) in forever, but Delmas was one of the best safeties in the NFC last year and with a dominant line putting pressure on the QB he could easily be the best S in the NFC this year, but he has to get that groin healthy fast. Well that's the Kool-aid I'm on this morning so what do you all think???? I'm sure you will all tell me and my prediction for this season is Lions are going to be in the Wild-Card mix this year we might not get there but I think we will get in with 9 wins, but I see us getting 10 wins this year, OH YEAH, my SUHL-aid is strong today.

Pride Of Detroit So what; it's only pre-season right????

First off I miss you guys REAL bad. So how many of you didn't get to see the first string offence in the Blitzburg game due to the stupid TV station covering that 3rd round of the golf tourney???? talk about mad TV!!!!! Well at least Staffinfection hooked up with Megatron before the Monsoon came down. I guess that's all I can say about that game. Other than at least we were leading until the roster cuts came in.  Now on to the real pre-season game.First off imagine this me sitting in my computer chair stairing at a blank screen with my alarm clock pressed up to my ear so I could listen to the game. This is what I came out of that game with. First string D is not going to be as much of a liability as we all thought it was going to be. After just 1 game into his rookie year Gunny has already started to get creative with Suh-nomi on that D-line.KVB is looking like he did 3 years ago when he had Fat Albert sucking up all those blockers. Still not sold on Avril as our answer at the other DE position especially since I didn't hear his name called 1 time in that denver game. Bly had a nice deflection land in his lap and SUH had a couple of deflections as DE and DT, I'm impressed so far with him. Our LB corp is not looking so hot at least from what I got to hear in that denver game so you guys can tell me if I'm wrong on that topic. Follow me as I jump around here guys. ROCK JANSEN who started at RT made my night because he was sounding like he was back in shape after that injury that held him up for the last couple of years. My opinion we have a RT and a LT and they both are from MEEEEEEEchigan, you all know I'm giddy about that. Staffinfection had a 122.2 QB rating late in the second quarter of that denver game and I beleave at half time he was at 110, now I know it was only preseason but when was the last time we had a QB have that high of a rating at any point in a game?????? And you take into acount him and Megatron hooked up for the second time in as many games and I'm getting my Suh-aid on. Now on to the RB postion. Best is sounding like he is going to be our starter when the season opens with a close battle for back-up duties with MM and K-smooth. Is it my imagination or is Best looking/sounding like the best back we have had since Barry retired???? It's not just the big run he had but making something out of nothing like he did on a couple of plays, well let's just  say that he is doing all the right things that we need from a starting RB. Out of curiousity here why hasn't Hanson played so far in pre-season????? has he played his last game in detroit???? I ask that because his kickoffs have been pretty sad the last few years and this new guy was putting Kickoffs out of the
back of the end-zone, yeah yeah it was in denver but still the guy has a live leg and we have not seen that out of Jason in almost 8 to 10 years now.As much as I love you Hanson I think your days are numbered especially since you make quite a bit of mulla for a kicker. Well guys I am at my sisters and it's time to go home for now but If I get a chance to baby sit my cousins kids this week you know I'll be on talking it up. For now I am outta here.

Pride Of Detroit I know this should be a Fan shot but who reads those.....other than Smurf.

Guys I am losing my Internet service tomorrow for about a month. We lost our Van because the Tranny blew, so being that we needed a vehicle more than cable services we have to give up the luxury for about a month. Just know I will miss all of you, very much especially now that training camp has opened. So brothers from other mothers after tonight you wont hear from me for a little while and just know I am thinking of you guys on a daily basis.

Pride Of Detroit Have we talked about Akwasi Owusu-Ansah yet???

OK guys first off I gotta say I kind of hate Sports Illistrated to get info from but here it goes. This guy is going to fly under a lot of radar's because he comes from a division 2 school, so here's a little about him if we don't already know his stats and such. He played at some school called Indiana University of Pennsylvania he's 6'0'' and can run a lights out 4.38. He's is being considered as both a safety and as a CB who is most likely going to get picked in the mid 3rd round cause he's not only a CB/S but he is a TD machine at returning kicks/P's. Now the scouts are concerned because he was a man playing against boys in Division 2, but he never had any scouts look him over when he was in high-school because he played at a rinky dink school. This guy has some strength according to this article he put up 21 reps on the bench at the combine and could very eazily be the 3rd or 4th best Safety in this draft since they say he's a ball hawk, but he could also be a CB and taken in the 5th or 6th round mostly cause he's a special teams returner that can flat out fly. His college coach was responcible for putting Simeon Rice and Kevin Hardy into the NFL as well so he was well coached at that Div 2 school. He played CB for his first 3 years at this school and switched to S for his senior year which he only registered 2 INT's because no one threw near him. I was just wondering if anyone else has heard of him or if we had talked about him as a sleeper.

Pride Of Detroit The RAMS just tipped their hand to this years draft!

With the release or incumbant starter Mark Bulger today, I truly beleave that the Rams just signed there draft day pick. You can almost pencil in the Sam Bradford ERA in St.Louis and we can start looking at the TB Bucks to see who they are going to draft at the #3 spot. Even though I still want our FO to sign Eric Berry, I see us grabbing the best player in this draft in SUH. I wont be shocked if we take Berry but I'd be shocked if we take Berry at #2, and since Sean put up that post on why he see's us not being able to trade down (Thanks WASH) I can't see our FO not taking the best DT prospect to come out of the draft in my life time.So all of you Okung banner wavers I'm sorry about your luck, but now that we signed Sims we are not drafting a O-linemen with the #2 pick.

Canal Street Chronicles Hello Saints fans

I'm sure you guys are probably already sick and tired of talking about the draft at this point in the offseason, but I have to bring it up once again. First off don't hate on me for saying Brees isn't THE BEST QB, he's one of the best no doubt about it but the best????? Anyways I'm over here from the Pride of Detroit, and I have the luck of the draw to draft for your Saints in our mock draft. Since the few of you that I have talked to seem to want defence in the first round I am going to ask who do you think you guys should draft. In a perfect world I would have taken a backfield player for your Saints but with a defence that finished 25th overall;which shocked me; I am open to here all of your ideas on who you all would want. If he is there when I draft for you guys I'm thinking of 2 players that may still be there. 1 is one of my Michigan Wolverines in Brandon Graham, He is a monster and most of the mock drafts have him slipping to the bottom of the first round since he had a bad combine. He plays a LOT better than his combine showed. He was the only real brite spot on a terrible defence. The second guy I'm thinking of is Spikes Again he had a real bad combine but if you look at what he does on the field it over comes his poor performance at the combine. If there are others that you guys are targeting in the bottom of the draft I would love to hear who they are. According to the few people I got a chance to talk to, your Saints are looking at either a DE/OLB in the first round.
