Roster stuff: 25- and 40-man, Fresno, San Jose, etc
Hi, all. I haven't been around much this offseason. I've mostly just been rolling around naked in piles of Giants world series memorabilia and attending Cactus League games (also while rolling around naked). Just want to say that I missed you all, except those of you who are jerks.
Great audio interview with Cody Ross
Scroll down to the bottom of the page for the Cody Ross link. You can download an mp3 as well. Interesting stuff, especially about the conditions under which he left Florida.
Major Nerb Lulz: Cliff Lee Edition
"I didn't have my good stuff going tonight," he said. "But I doubt that made a difference. I'm not a six-sided die, but mathematically I act like one and function with surprisingly little agency. Any game I pitch is just an expression of my true talent, that of my opponents and something that isn't quite what the average person means when they say 'luck' but works more or less the same way. I hope for a 90th percentile outcome every time out, but to me it's really all about sticking near my mean outcome and giving the guys a chance to win."

Heath Bell named Deliveryman of the Year
Bell, not Wilson, named best closer in the majors. No stories to link to yet, just twitter chatter.
Thoughts?
Today's Dugout Chat: Cheap Shots at Kruk and Kuip
Not exactly accurate, but hilarious as (almost) always.
Marty Lurie Interviews Bill Hayes
My adopted son gets some run on Lurie's show! You may have heard it this past weekend, but if not, check it out. Bill is a phenomenal baseball man and an unsung hero of the Giants staff.
Check it out!
D Train's Next Stop: Fresno
From Facebook: San Francisco Giants Giants signed LHP Dontrelle Willis yesterday to a Triple-A Contract.
I've always liked the kid, and while I don't think it's likely that he'll "figure it out" and regain his early career form, I sure as hell am rooting for him.

Credit Where It's Due, Midseason 2010
So far in 2010, teh Ginatz Brazzsz have made some moves that have *gasp* actually been remarkably successful. I reckon it's time we give Brian and Co. his props for due diligence done and good moves made.

B-R on the Giants’ #8 Hitters
An astonishing .438/.508/.686. Their 1.194 is the highest OPS for any team batting slot this season. (The White Sox #4 hitters are second at 1.132). How have they done it?
MLB teams take scouting to new level, track umps
I often wondered if teams did this, and it turns out that some do. An interesting read.
Headed to Modesto to watch the Little Giants take on the Nuts
(twss)
Anyone interested in half-assed first-hand scouting reports on any particular players? Surkamp's starting for SJG, apparently.

Retirement Doesn't Have Anything to Do with Barry Bonds
God bless those lunatics at the Dugout.
Who's down to watch the MadBum on Tax Day?
Thinking hard about going to Muni to "celebrate" tax day. Maybe watching MadBum and the SanJo Murderer's Row will take our collective mind off how badly our tax dollars are being spent. Who's in?
Open Phillies Rally Thread!
Yes, we're all sad that Milwaukee got ran. I would have loved to see C.C. and Prince and Ray Ray crush the Dodgers, but that ship has sailed. We must now throw our collective rooting interests behind the Phillies. After all, who doesn't love Chase Utley? His first name is a verb!

And our own Honest Abe Feliz. Grant himself said we were required to root for Pete Happy.

Did you know Cole Hamels was married to this woman from Survivor?
Did you know there was a TV show called Survivor?!?

The Bay Uhhrea's own J-Roll! I miss the braids. :-(

Let's go, Phillies! Beat dem Bums!

No more Omar, more Bochy, more...
http://blogs.mercurynews.com/extrabaggs/2008/09/29/sabean-vizquel-wont-be-back/
Aurilia could return at a later point this winter, but Omar won’t. “Zero chance,” said Sabean, who met with Vizquel yesterday.
Sandoval penciled at 1B for next season. Cain untouchable in a trade. All coaches will return. Bullpen will be a major project. Frandsen is a top contender for 2B next season. “We’re all pulling for him,” Sabean said.
I would normally make this a FanShot, but I reckon folks will wanna talk about it.

Random (Deep) FanThoughts, by delorean
-
Arrrgh, the end of the regular season is upon us. I suppose I should be relieved, but it's never easy to say goodbye. Especially when the product on the field gets suddenly and inexplicably watchable (with the marked exception of this last Rockies series).
-
I've had lotsa LULZ and rotsa ROFLs in the gameday threads this year, and I will miss those. I will miss the wit and wisdom of many of the posters here as they turn their attention to "foot ball," a sport (?) about which I know as much as Judy Steffes knows about BASEBALL.
-
I will attend my final game of the season tonight, wherein I will holler at Pablo, berate Manny, and (I hope) catch a bill from Bill Hayes.
-
These things rilly make me wish we had a different, less sucky GM.
-
I can't wait til Spring Training. How many days til pitchers and catchers report?!?!?

WTF Cubs?!?!?
A new STAT for you STATHEADS to chew on: tINCFoUTaCU
THE INFALLIBLE NED COLLETTI FORMULA OF UNIVERSAL TRUTH AND COMPREHENSIVE UNDERSTANDING: It is the sum of a player's age, height, weight, batting average, home runs, stolen bases, fielding percentage, on-base percentage, doubles, triples, hit-by-pitches, Cartesian coordinates of birthplace and current residence, and number of cavities filled.
Or, just a devious way of getting you to read a Dugout Chat.
Russ Ortiz wants to pitch in 2009, and he worked out for ten days a week ago.
Dugout Chat Featuring Sabean & Neukom
"I'm general manager Brian Sabean, I mainly focus on aquiring the oldest players available."
All Signs Point to Sabean and Bochy Staying Put in '09
Both Baggs and Schulman are reporting today that new Chief Head Big Cheese Managing Sergeant General Partner Duke Neukom has no plans to replace either Bochy or Sabean in '09. (Both men's contracts expire after next year.)
So, we can discuss that if we're so inclined.
But mostly I started this diary FanShot so I could post this quote:
So basically, Baer’s umbrella will cover the entire organization.
That just conjured the funniest image; one that I hope natto of SFK Mike or Josh from Hollywood will help bring to life with the magic of Photoshop and the Internets.
75! 75! 75!
Joe Poz piece on Carlos Beltran
Should be required reading for any baseball fan. Wonderful story.
Is this guy any relation to Nate?
You've got to ... accentuate the positive
Actually, you don't have to. If you prefer, you can hold your head in your hands and wonder what exactly in the love of holy feck happened to the Tiny Freak Robo Franchise Enchanter there in the bottom of the 4th. I didn't see it, so I can't really theorize, and I don't particularly care to analyze it. The guy got human for a half-inning and that half-inning might've stuck a fork in his Cy Young hopes. Whoops!
But here's what struck me about listening to (some of) the game and looking at the box score: Omar going 3-for-5 with 3 RBIs (BA now at a gaudy .195!!!), Winn going 3-for-6, but possibly most impressively, 3 BBs for Pablo. It's almost as if Sr. Sandoval was reading McC C yesterday and saw someone post "I'd like to see him take more walks," then he shrugged his shoulders and said "OK," and proceeded to go out there and do just that. I'm impressed and heartened.
Also, Sadler pitched a nice inning. I just assumed he would give up the winning run and was pleasantly surprised when he didn't. Oh, and LOL Wilson.
