The other thread was getting hard to load. I'm not trying to steal Mr. Fucillo's thread, I haven't seen him around so I'll start a new one in his honor.

Hey guys, this is Fooch from Niners Nation. It's been a long time since both our teams were consistently good, so maybe things are back on the upswing in the Bay area and the Motor City. While I'm solely a 49ers fan, I have enjoyed seeing the talent Detroit is putting on the field week in and week out. It's hard not to be entertained by Calvin Johnson, Ndamukong Suh, Jahvid Best, and so many more.

Our two teams last met in 2009 and the 49ers have actually won the last seven contests between the two. I'll enjoy that record in the abstract, but this year's Detroit team is nothing like some of the previous Detroit teams, so previous wins and losses mean nothing. But I had to mention it!

Each week I've set up a FanPost at the opposing team's blog so you guys can ask any questions you might have about the 49ers. I believe that the more we know about the opposing team, the more we can enjoy the game on a slightly more detailed level. Some disagree, so it's not for everyone.

I'll post a link to this thread over at Niners Nation as well and get some of NN's readers over to help answer questions. I'll jump in as well, but I won't begin to pretend I know more than anybody else about the 49ers.

This thread is primarily for learning more about the team, but smack talk is not discouraged. Let's just try and keep things civil heading into the game and have a good time.

The next home game when you out of towners start asking about where to tailgate, and are usually pointed to the Eastern Market area you know have something else to do beside eating hot dogs.

It's gotten exposed by the press, and their acting all shocked and surprised, but callers to 97.1 have said that cops, firemen, and all sorts of city shooters have been going their for quite some time. So look for the red bus and experience all that Detroit has to offer.

October 10th against the Bears....Goddawg, finally!

This was the number 1 major, shameful, embarrassing thing that Millen created with his destruction of this organization, and the biggest slap as Lions fans that we had no connection to the rest of the NFL and other teams and their fans when our hometown team couldn't even get on national TV. IMO this is big, and a confirmation that we have finally turned the corner.

I am so pumped and finally proud to be a Lions fan again. I know for a fact we will kick some Bear ass on October 10.

In previous years I would sit down and one of the first things out of my mouth would be, "Well were about to watch a whole different type of football then what we witnessed all year long."

The Lions just did not play the same game as these playoff caliber teams. We were talent short and handicapped by our schemes. Some warmed over Tampa 2 with the incorrect personnel, or some type of offense with an offensive coordinator and a passing coach or some weird set up like that, just wasn't cutting it. It was painfully obvious that we sucked.

Well, those days are gone. Just about every team that played this weekend I felt we stacked up and could play just as well as any of them, if not better then a few. I know our offense is on par or better in most of those teams. The defense is just about equal, and we attack on D just as good as any team that played this weekend even though it was a tad obvious were still a bit personnel challenged in spots.

So in my opinion, were back in the NFL and ready to play meaningful, playoff football next year.

I'm not trying to start a war, I'm not saying it's the right or wrong move to make. I have my opinion which I believe is pretty well known regarding the matter, but just for thinking out loud sake, and just for a FRIENDLY meeting of the minds, but would Calvin be worth to a another team after the season he's had?

I realize one team would value him differently then another, but in your opinion, what could the Lions expect for him, seeing what we got from Dallas in the Roy trade?

I say a 1st, 3rd, and a 6th, or a swapping of 6th round positions and a 7th. Too much? Remember he's one of a kind is so many peoples opinions.

For 1 additional year only at this point. Here's why I say that.

As we seen after the Pats game, the team while not out and out quitting on Schwartz, has started the initial steps to the long slow but steady decline in discipline, effort, and team unity.

While athletes talk a great game, can have meetings until the cows come home to straighten out what should be internal matters and are highly paid, under press and fan scrutiny, the subtle placement of blame starts exactly with what CW and CH did after the Pats game. While everyone may say it's all worked out, the guilty parties they were subtlety referring to will now subconsciously hold a grudge, and will go to their "sources" to deflect blame off of themselves.

It's then becomes a vicious cycle, and what these two started does not one bit of good unless the wins start piling up, which to myself looks like that's going to be next to impossible at this point.(hope I'm wrong)

Taking it further, we have all seen where in the players minds it couldn't possibly be the players themselves, or the talent assembled, or the effort being expended that's causing the losing, it has to be the coaching and system of course. it's certainly not them, and forget that happy "the blame is on me, the players have to pick it up" hogwash. That's player speak 101, and one of the best at that is DOM, just to name a player and example.

So then in the back of their minds they realize where Schwartz is on his current contract, and if they see him as a lame duck coach knowing that he's potentially out of here after one more year, and knowing that a roster can't be turned over in one year, they just potentially bought themselves a couple more years of paychecks if the current coach and staff is given the boot.

The subtle blaming of the coaches first starts amongst the players and with hints to the press, and the level of play declines further.

Now this is where the extension comes in. Extend Schwartz now, he's then no longer a lame duck, the players can see that he has the backing of the FO and ownership, and they better get off of there asses and pick up their level of play, or else they could potentially be out of here and scrambling for a job.

Now if Schwartz at the end of next year has still underachieved as I feel he has done up to this point in time, well then fire him. The lame duck excuse was taken out of the equation at least, and what the hell? The Ford's are great at eating coaches contracts, and it's only for one year.

If he has a great year next year, give him a multiple year extension and it's all good, but no way in hell should Schwartz not have more then one year left remaining on his contract going into next season IMHO.

I know some of you ignore me(I don't really care), and some of you debate me, but remember, and understand one thing, we all want the same thing for this team.

I have been very curious for quite a while about one thing, and PLEASE believe me when I'm not saying anyone is right or wrong(were all in this together), who's right or wrong is completely out of the picture, I just dying to understand something, and in actuality I hope I can admit I've been wrong.

What causes the difference in say myself and Joshun and others in these debates(sorry Joshun, had to drag you into it). Let me try to explain.

I am 52, I've been a Lions fan for 40+ years, I've seen minimal good times, and in the recent past, have seen this organization sink to shit like others for the last 10 years. I live in the Detroit area, and listen all day long to 97.1 between house, garage and work.

I believe this organization is on the upswing, I believe Schwartz is the correct coach for this team, and Mayhew, while I don't feel he walks on water, is loads better then M=====m. What makes me so unable to accept more of the "trust us, were moving in the right direction", and then watch a mess like yesterday, a winnable game pissed away.

Tell me something. Why are some so willing to accept everything this team does. Shitty performance, good performance, stupid performance, whatever.

Is it because of Schwartz?

Is it because your not in the Detroit area, and your not exposed to local Detroit talk radio on a daily basis and negative articles in the paper?

Is it because your younger and you haven't lived through 40 years of bullshit?

Is it because I've been tainted by too much negativity on talk radio?

Is it just my personality? Being sold hogwash for so long, that I refuse to accept the positive, yet more promises, of trust us, then watch stupid football beyond belief?

I understand it's wasn't about wins this year, but what's wrong with winning an unexpected game or two?

I would just like to know why so many are willing to just swallow this weekly promise? What's wrong with expecting the Lions to win?

That's Derrick Williams of course on Twitter. Now of course everyone is entitled to their time away from work, and to do what they want.

You look at some of his Twitter times and he's going to, coming from, or at the practice facility in Allen Park. Now I guess if I was a punt returner fair catching stuff at the 3, or a wide open receiver that got behind the defense and proceeds drop a drive killing pass, maybe I would keep a little lower public profile until I got my shit together to some extent, and lay off of the stupid tweets and focus just a little bit more on my game.

Maybe being unfocused could be the culprit, because Twittering away sure hasn't helped him excel on the field.

I wasn't around last preseason, and after reading all of banter(which is stuck my nose into) over the KS cut possibility, I'm holding my breath over the final roster cuts, as to how bad this site may get when some popular and talented players are whacked.

I have some favorites that I want to see make it, like Gronkowski, A Brown, DeDE and Fowler who is already gone, and of course others that I wanted to out of here like yesterday, such as D Williams, and Eric King, and while it would hurt some see ya K.S.

What do you call it? Like the West Coast Offense, how can it be classified?

I know what I'm seeing, and to me it looks like some sort of cutting edge, multidimensional hybrid thing that can't be classified as a power running game type offense, even though that's a component of it, or a 2 T.E. or 4 wide out run and shoot type of thing.

You never know what's coming out of what set. Does any other team run this type of offense, or are the Lions finally doing something that 80% of the league tried 5 years earlier and discarded 3 years a go?

Now to me it looks like something roughly Indy and the the Patriots run. Of course correct me if I'm wrong. Call me stupid for not knowing, but having the same coordinator and system in place for a 2nd year is going to be hugh for this whole offense this year and I want to understand what I'm witnessing.

It's Stafford........I have, as of course thousands of us have done through the years been witness to countless Detroit Q.B's, have of course watched 100's if not 1000's of football games. Have seen thousands of football players come and go, and I do not do this often. But.....Right here, right now I have to proclaim before the season starts and everyone else starts throwing extra Stafford love around, and says "oh man, I knew Stafford would be great"........ I have a man love crush on this kid...

Barring injury of course, this will happen..

Matt Stafford will go to the Pro Bowl this year, will be ranked in the top 8 Q.B.'s in the league this year but will become a top 5 Q.B. in future years, and will go down as the top 2 or 3 Q.B.'s in Detroit history(not hard).

This guy has "IT". He has proven to me to correct the one and only thing that I seen as a weakness last year, his accuracy. He's still rifling when he has to, but to become more accurate he's taken off a bit from his throws, and he's not just hitting his receivers, he's hitting them in stride, and in the chest.

He grasps this offense which is just perfect for him, as good if not better then Linehan. I give all the credit in the world to Mayhew, Schwartz and Linehan for putting this kid in perfect position to succeed, and Stafford has the perfect temperament to do it.

This kid is a Marino and Peyton Manning all wrapped in one. Marino for the arm, and Manning for his grasp of the offense.No I haven't been drinking. Believe me when I say I do not jump on a athletes bandwagon often, laugh all you want, but this is going to be one fantastic, I don't want to say one of he best ever, but okay, I drooled enough I'll say it.....One of the best ever Q.B's to play the game.

Barring injury of course, this will happen..

Rookie corner Amari Spievey has been missing a lot of camp with to an assortment of injuries. He isn't getting any sympathy from the Lions coaching staff, especially coach Jim Schwartz .

"He's needs to push through all that stuff. This is an NFL camp. No one feels 100 percent," Schwartz said Thursday. "Learning how to deal with that is a big part of being a professional and making the jump to the NFL."

Spievey has been riddled by injuries since being drafted by the Lions in the third round. He's now battling through an oblique injury, but also has suffered from hip flexors and sore hamstrings.

He participated in individual and seven-on-seven drills Thursday, but not team activities.

"Of course you are frustrated when you're not on the field," Schwartz said. "I'd expect that he'd want to be out there showing what he can do."

It's been alluded to this past week in other articles that the Lions coaching staff are starting to look at Spievey in a different light since his 3rd round drafting. Saying he's a bust is wayyyyy premature, but with how careful Schwartz handles injured players, for Schwartz to call Spievey out, to basically tell him to get his ass on the playing field your going to hurt to some extent, that to me is earth shattering coming out of Schwartz's mouth, and he's losing faith in the player.
