Don’t get me wrong. I’m not against having fun. But it has to be a controlled kind of fun, where those who are having too much fun are asked to leave, and those not having enough fun are beaten. - Jack Handey
Let's see.... my favorite philosophy books: Logico Tractatus Philosophicus by Ludwig Wittgenstein, Philosophy and the Mirror of Nature by Richard Rorty, Consciousness Explained by Daniel Dennett, and The Visible and the Invisible by Maurice Merleau-Ponty. Favorite fiction is I guess either A Farewell to Arms or Notes from the Underground. Not very original choices but I don't read much modern fiction.
From ESPN: Since 1996, there have been 102 division champions, and 53 of them were in first place on May 1. That’s only 51 percent -- barely half the teams -- which hardly guarantees a division title at the end of the season. They say it like it's a bad thing, but for this year's Sox I like those odds.
Yeah, the Yankees could have a tough year. Also, the article survey's the Yankees recent success and makes the strongest, clearest case yet that free agents and big salaries, more than internal development, drove their recent surge of success.
This is interesting. So is Mike Lowell going to be a coach of some sort? Lowell definitely seems to me high up there on the list of "good guys" that the Sox have elected to keep in the fold, with Pedro, Wakefield & Varitek. If Ian Browne doesn't know what his role is it must not have been formally announced.
Were you wondering what next? Well this is what.
Cherginton says he won't be able to resume playing until late spring training.

The news is that Gio Gonzalez, and Nelson have been named. And then there is A-Rod -- who claims only to have taken PEDs in 2001-2003 and has never failed a test since. It names Melky Cabrera which we already knew, and Yasmani Grandal which we already knew. And there may be others deeper in the article, which I could focus on if my fucking cat wasn't jumping up onto my keyboard. Things pissing me off power rankings 1. The cat 2. Winter 3. The cat
That's the last pitcher off the board I really wanted. Everyone remaining is either Kyle Lohse or Randy Wolf or Carl Pavano or Derek Lowe. So... spring training invites and minor league contracts it is, I guess.
So that's what it was. This is according to Mike Gambardella (and probably other reporters who found out before him). This is the full tweet: Mike Napoli was diagnosed with avascular necrosis. It's poor blood supply that can kill cells in bone tissue. He currently has no symptoms. Right now, I'm having a "suddenly the past 51 days make sense" feeling. One positive side was that Cherington mentioned there were still available free agent pitchers the team might consider. He didn't mention anyone by name, and it did sound like the Sox might not add guys until spring training. But Shaun Marcum is still out there. Also, if you have Steam and would like an invite to DOTA 2, let me know in the comments. I have a few I can give away.

The most charitable interpretation I can make of this set of events, is that the Red Sox really WANTED to add an extra outfield bat, and/or an extra starting pitcher, but concluded they couldn't. So, hey, might as well spend the money on Hanrahan. The bright side of this is, the Sox now have excess at catcher, relief, outfield, and a bit of second-tier prospect depth that may be setting up a trade.
The link is just a tweet. I cannot understand this from the Angels perspective. I guess it gives Peter Bourjos his shot. But, trading to a division rival? Getting rid of lineup depth? For Jason Vargas? I approve of the trade from the Mariners perspective. Thoughts?

Link is to a tweet from Ken Rosenthal. I'd like to change the culture of this site a bit- it's ok to have comment threads on Fanshots. Hopefully we do it more often. Sometimes a FanPost is a little foreboding in the implied commitment. But Fanshots are easy, just like your mom!
For Drew Stubbs and Didi Gregorius, is the rumor. And just like with the Rays-Royals trade, my first thought is "The Red Sox can definitely beat this offer."
@nickcafardo: Red Sox front runners on Shane Victorino. Offered three year $38 mill deal. (No need to click the link, that's the whole tweet.)
Wonder how long before anyone notices my attempted hostile takeover of the fanshots.

No one sees these fanshots. Oh well.
If the two Angels writers did not put Weaver ahead of Verlander, and Rodney did not get a 1st place vote, Verlander would have won.
The following is not a prescription. It's a scenario, where the objective is to maximize the Sox's 2014 compensatory draft picks. To do that, you have to have players depart the Sox in 2013 via...
