Dave Niehaus: 1935-2010
"Sad news out of the Pacific Northwest tonight.
According to Kirby Arnold of the Everett Herald, longtime Mariners broadcaster Dave Niehaus passed away from a heart attack this afternoon at the age of 75."
RIP Dave.
In Pictures: Baseball's Most Overpaid Players
Forbes.com recently put out a list of baseball's most overpaid players, and hey, guess what!
"Center Field
Aaron Rowand
San Francisco Giants
Salary: $13.6 million
Expected VORP: 15.5
Actual VORP: -4.3
Always strong defensively, Rowand just isn't hitting enough this year (.219, six homers) to justify his All-Star contract. Best value: Marlon Byrd."
Also, for those interested, here's the full text sotry as well.
"I'm hearing chatter that Pat Burrell has received interest from Giants and Padres and could be weighing offers. He'll cost the minimum."

Uribe as starting 3B?
"Juan Uribe, who just signed a one-year contract, will be considered as the everyday third baseman."
Some other interesting tidbits in there as well.
Sporting News names Zack Greinke, Tim Lincecum AL, NL pitchers of the year
"Kansas City Royals right-hander Zack Greinke and San Francisco Giants right-hander Tim Lincecum are Sporting News' 2009 pitchers of the year, as selected by a panel of 31 major league general managers and assistant GMs."
One or the other?
The unlikely run for the postseason by the Giants in 2009 very well could result in extensions to both Bruce Bochy and Brian Sabean. Keith Law alluded to this in a recent chat:
Keith Law (1:47 PM)
I imagine that the Giants' run at the wild card means job security for Bochy and Sabean, even though Bochy seems to have his own level of managerial fail.
However, if you’re a Giants fan, you would probably rather see at least one of these two individuals given their walking papers (perhaps even both). So I ask the question: If you could only choose one of the two to be replaced, who would it be?
Jeff Kent back at AT&T
"Jeff Kent is a Wall of Famer.
Upon his retirement after last season, Kent became eligible for induction on the Giants’ Wall of Fame by virtue of his All-Star appearance with the club. He’ll be formally inducted and recognized on Saturday, Aug. 29, and the Giants have set up a conference call with the media for Monday."
NO!
"They’ve also spoken to San Diego about a deal that would send starter Jonathan Sanchez to the Padres for outfielder Scott Hairston."
Mateo likely headed to Cardinals
"The latest buzz in Latin America is that the Cardinals are expected to sign 16-year-old Dominican outfielder Wagner Mateo for a bonus of approximately $3 million on July 2."
Giants sign third-rounder Chris Dominguez
According to Baggs, the Giants have signed third-rounder Chris Dominguez out of Louisville. Baggs says he will probably head to Salem-Keizer soon.
2009 Draft Signing Status
This shows the status of all the Giants draft picks. As stated, players who have signed are in bold. So far, the only player to have signed is the Giants 10th round pick, RHP Jeremy Toole out of Brigham Young.
UPDATE: According to Schulman, the Giants have signed 23 of their 50 picks, the highest being seventh-rounder 2B Nick Liles out of Western Carolina University. (Schulman calls him Steven Liles, but both the BA list and the MLB.com Draft Tracker refer to him as Nick)
Ever wondered what The Unit looked like as a youngster?
That's the link to the actual Baggs article. For those that want to go straight to the picture, click here. Try and see if you can find him before you scroll down to see which one he is.
Just got ESPN: The Magazine in the mail today. It's good to see that Tim is getting all sorts of love from the national media.
Giants-related Christmas gifts
I thought it would be fun to share any Giants-related Christmas gifts that we all received. I got a really cool picture that shows the progression of the Giants jersey through the history of the organization:

Feel free to share anything Giants that you've received in past years as well. A couple years ago, I received season tickets. That was probably the best gift I have ever received.
If you didn't receive any Giants-related gifts, then share the coolest gift you received period.
Giants offer Derrick Turnbow a non-guaranteed contract
Great low risk, high reward move if he accepts.
Koji Uehara's agent in contact with Giants
He's a right-handed starting pitcher from the Yomiuri Giants. Anybody have any thoughts/info on this guy?
