Mizzou is about to get a bass drum the size of a hotel hot tub.

The 9-foot-tall, 800-plus-pound instrument, thought to be the largest in the country, was built at a Barnesville machine shop by a Gordon College music instructor. It took him four months.

The builder, Neil Boumpani, his last name befitting of a percussionist, got a call last winter from a fraternity at Missouri. The school already had a 6-foot bass drum named "Big MO," but it wanted more "MO" to bang on at home football games. [...]

Boumpani's creation, which has cost close to $50,000 to make, has a fiberglass shell that was made from a custom mold in Alabama. An auto-body shop in Griffin, Ga., later painted it metallic-black. The plastic, 108-inch drum heads on either side cost $1,500 apiece. He plans to ship the drum to Missouri soon. But not before he records its low boom to remember it by.

Even so, he said, "This is not something you make for sound. It's more to ... aggravate the other team."

As he explained the tomfoolery that had quarterback Blaine Gabbert lining up at receiver as MU ran out the clock on the last series, Pinkel apparently blurted out a secret.

"We didn't want to run Blaine because of his ribs," he said.

Unless Pinkel was referring to an odd choice of pre-game meal ailing Gabbert, evidently the "high hip pointer" MU had announced he had was, in fact, rib-high.

Bengals cut ex-Mizzou star Chase Coffman

Tight end Chase Coffman, a third-round draft pick last year out of Missouri, was among players cut Saturday by the Cincinnati Bengals. The 2008 winner of the John Mackey Award as the nation's best tight end, Coffman failed to make the Bengals' active roster for any game last year.

When Missouri and Texas Tech play in Lubbock on Nov. 6, they'll wear camouflage-trimmed jerseys to support the Wounded Warrior Project.

Bowers Throws The 1st Pitch!

MU announced Friday that junior forward Laurence Bowers would throw out the first pitch at the Cardinals-Reds game on Friday Sept. 3 -- the night before the Mizzou-Illinois football game. Bowers will be joined on the mound by Illinois basketball coach Bruce Weber.

Bowers, who was a pitcher in high school in Memphis, Tenn., said in a statement that he anticipated "an incredible experience" that he would "remember forever."
