Tony Robbins Interview with Coach Wooden
Motivational speaker Tony Robbins posted on his website audio files of an interview he did with Coach Wooden about 20 years ago. The two files combine for over 90 minutes of audio.
The link is only going to be up for 48 hours, so if you're interested, you should download the files soon. I haven't listened to all of it yet, but based on the first several minutes, it sounds like Coach Wooden shares his philosophies and how they developed.
Tyus Edney on the Radio
Tyus Edney was on the Petros and Money Show recently and talked about his career and (of course) his game-winning shot against Missouri. This is a link to a page with the interview and other information on Edney. I guess he's going to get into coaching ... I certainly wish him the best.
Former $Cum player Dominique Byrd charged with assault
Byrd was charged with second- and third-degree assault and armed criminal action after getting in a bar fight that resulted from him (allegedly) groping some girl.
This is a little surprising. I figured the severe discipline instilled by pom-pom would carry over to life beyond college. Plus I thought Byrd saved fighting for important stuff like disputes over Playstation games.
No word on whether Byrd will write a book called "If I Tried to Hit a Guy with a Drinking Glass, This is How I Would Have Done It".

Our offensive play-calling is Paul Hackett-esque
Absolutely horrible.
Down by 10 with six minutes to play and we're running the ball on first and second down.
Earlier in the game we ran the ball on third and goal from the ten.
Our only TD drive was 6 yards.
Just absolutely horrible.
Bill Dwyre tries to defend the crappy LA Times coverage of Kevin Love decision
Truly pathetic. I'm not even sure where to start...
BTW, based on comments over at BruinZone, it seems that the Times had much more coverage of Casey Clausen's decision to go to Notre Dame, which also was a non-binding oral commitment. Can anyone confirm this?
Q&A with Marcedes Lewis
Apologies if this has already been posted. It's the text of a brief Q&A with Lewis at NFL.com.
update on some members of the 1995 championship squad
I thought folks here might be interested in some recent info on a few of our 1995 heroes (more details at BruinHoopScoop):
- Tyus Edney's Greek team is still alive in the Euroleague playoffs. Edney, despite being 11 years out of college now, remains a productive starter for Olympiacos.
- George Zidek is retiring due to a knee injury. Zidek is a huge star in his homeland, and he too would still be a contributor on his team if not for his knee problems.
- Charles O'Bannon's Japanese team won the league title. He and JR Henderson continue to play professionally in Japan (on different teams), and they both are doing quite well.
CBS Sportsline's Gregg Doyel rips Lute Olson
Wow. The money line: "Lute hasn't won 753 games and reached the Hall of Fame by putting anyone's needs above his own." Doyel takes Olson to task for his handling of the Rodgers situation plus the revoking of reshirts for Kirk Walters last year and Fendi Onobun this year.
Pictorial evidence of the (lack of) intelligence of $C cheerleaders
From the diaries - image size reformatted (click on it to enlarge) - I don't have to add anything to this. -N
If you haven't seen it...
NY Times with some UCLA football coverage
Wow, I guess beating up on Oklahoma (even though they are terrible) will get people's attention. The article is actually pretty good - it talks about how the Bruins are improving despite (or because of) the fact that $C casts a big shadow. Nice to see us getting positive publicity - now we just have to make sure we justify it.
Sorry I have to bring it up: the BCS
I'm excited that the football season has finally begun, but I need to bring up a sore subject: the BCS. I write about this in detail at my hoops blog, but geez, is there a worse concept in professional or college sports? Determining the two best teams in the country not by having a playoff, but by having people vote and computers spit out rankings? Just thinking about it makes me cringe! As fans, don't we deserve better? I've heard all the reasons why the system is the way it is, and I guess it's not going to change any time soon, but I just have to vent. Tommy Tuberville comments on the changes made to the BCS for this year, and he really has it right: "Nothing has been done to solve the problem....We have used a Band-Aid. You can have all the voting polls you want. Popular vote is not the way you have a national champion. You need to play it on the field." [emphasis mine]
Oh well. Go Bruins!
Comments about our incoming hoops freshmen
I had the opportunity to watch just the fourth quarter of the Sinclair Bruins' game on Saturday in the Say No Summer League. I guess I missed Josh Shipp taking over the game, but I wanted to share just my general thoughts about the incoming freshmen. I'm really impressed by how hard-nosed these guys are, especially Aboya (before he got hurt), Roll, and Moute.
Maybe it's just because nobody else in the summer league plays this way, but it seems like the Bruins are constantly in position to get offensive boards and get to the loose balls, which really is a refreshing change from the players of the pre-Howland era. Clearly, none of these guys are going to be dominant players this upcoming year (and we don't need them to be so yet), but they all have the potential to develop into good players within the next few seasons. I'm really excited that Howland has us back on track.
