The Big 12 Office Breaks Up
This got posted over at K-States blog, and is hilarious. A highly recommended read.
The Nick Saban Recruiting Model
ESPN article that hits on the basics of how Saban recruits as well his disciples. Basically we're more thorough than everyone else, which is absolutely no surprise to anyone paying attention.
Duron and Chris Carter talk about UA
I got this emailed to me. Don't know where the article is from, but the way they talk about our program is awesome, and makes your realize the absolute beast of a machine that we are building. God I love Nick Saban:
Duron Carter committed to Alabama during his visit to Tuscaloosa over the weekend.
Two weeks before national signing day, Tide assistant Bobby Willaims placed a call to Cris Carter wanting to konw if Carter's son, Coffeyville CC wide receiver Duron Carter, would have an interest in Alabama.
"I was like, 'What? Do we have interest?'," the former NFL star receiver recalls. "When Alabama called, I went out and got me an Alabama cap that I've been wearing ever since. I knew then that it was time to shut the recruiting process down."
Mark Gottfried to NC State
Matt: Wow. Did not see this one coming. You have to wonder how Wolfpack fans are taking this one. Nothing for us Bama fans to do besides wish a former player and coach the best of luck, regardless of how the last few years of his coaching tenure in Tuscaloosa played out. He had success at Murray State and for the most part in his first eight seasons at Alabama, so it's not impossible for him to be successful in Raleigh, especially if he surrounds himself with the right assistants.
SI on Saban's recruiting
Mandel is generally impartial, so this gives you an idea of how the rest of the country views our recruiting tactics: basically that Saban is gaming the system and is casting off unwanted players.
Clowney on his Recruitment
A short ESPN article about Clowney and the craziness of being the #1 player coming out.
Brilliant video mocking Favre and LeBron simultaneously.
Justin Blackmon returns to school
Good news for Julio, as some people were projecting Blackmon over him. Also gives the Big 12 someone to challenge Oklahoma, whose only significant loss is overrated DeMarco Murry.
The Tragedy of Camlet
Since the Cam Newton investigation has been endlessly discussed, debated, mocked, enjoyed by the entire sports blogosphere, a friend of mine decided to take the tale to a whole new level and turn it into a Shakespearean tragedy. Scene One was released today, and he is writing the entire play. Check it out, it's pretty funny and very well written.
My Impressions from the UAH scrimmage
Bama prevailed 73-68 over UAH last night in double OT. I watch the entire game on the rolltime.com stream(which worked fantastically, I hooked my laptop to my tv and it looked like a standard definition broadcast). All of the following concerns could be partially because we were playing UAH and didn't want to show too much and UAH clearly wanted this win, but still a few thoughts/impressions from the game:
- Trevor Releford is already our best player, and he needs to realize it. He lead us in scoring with 22 points, but most of that came late. For most of the game he seemed content to dribble down the floor and let other players create. We need him to take control of the offense. His quickness is on par with pre-injury Ronald Steele, and he has the moves to use that quickness. His jumper is silky smooth, and he stepped up late and calmly hit two huge 3's when the ball was swung around to him. We will need him to be aggressive in looking for his own shot or penetrating the defense to get open looks for other players. Which leads into...
- Somebody has to step up and knock down an open 3. No one on the team looked very confident shooting, and we consistently passed up open looks. Ben Ebeln's man was playing 6 feet off him when we was squared up at the 3 point line, and the entire UAH defense was sagged back like a middle school defense when half the guys can't throw a ball from the line to the rim. Charvez David and Andrew Steele did not play, and they might help some on this. But when left open, Eblen and Mitchell both seemed apprehensive in taking a open look, and when they did shoot, neither one looked comfortable with their stroke. This will have to improve if we're going to do any damage in the SEC.
- Our post play on offense is uninspiring. Green and Hines both looked like they'd bulked up some, but other than one quick drop step for a dunk by JaMychal, I don't remember them scoring off of an entry pass, and there were several very ugly shots. They were doubled sure, but they tallest player on UAH was 6'8", and they started four guards. They didn't seem like they knew where to look when they did need to pass out of the double team, and they got only 3 offensive rebounds between them.
- I liked the defensive intensity considering it was a scrimmage. They didn't seem to really give up on any plays, and the guards played aggressive throughout the game and Senario had 5 steals by himself. Our big guys got abused some chasing people all over the perimeter on back cuts and help D, but that won't be an issue when they are facing other SEC teams who won't be playing all those guards.
- Carl Engstrom is a huge work in progress, but you can see the potential. He didn't play after halftime, but he looked even more lost than the others trying to defend the perimeter, and I'm sure even though it was a scrimmage Grant didn't want to lose, so thus the benching. The one time their post guy went up against him Engstrom blocked his shot, and his long arms are sure to alter some shots this year. He also ran the floor pretty well for a big guy. We didn't even look his way when he posted up, but that will come with time, he has the physical tools to be a good player.
- I was excited about seeing a Alabama jersey with Durant on the back of it after seeing Kevin dominate the NBA last year, but I don't see Kendall contributing much this year. His defense is just bad, he reached in at dumb times, and I don't see him getting much playing time on a Anthony Grant team with the emphasis we place on D.
- Senario Hillman is as confidant as ever, and it seemed like it was just a poor shooting night for him. He just missed several open looks, but hit a couple of tough shots and the team seems to be OK with him taking jumpers. His form looked good, so for now I'd say it's possible for him to finally be a good shooter, which combined with his explosive ability could make him tough to stop. He spent the whole night guarding their PG as well, who was lightning fast, and still had energy to hustle after playing 47 minutes last night. I think Grant likes him a lot Senario could be a very good player for us this year.
Emmitt Smith talks Trent Richardson
"I don't even flash back, because he's doing things that I didn't do," said Smith, recalling his own college career. "When I watch him, I am on the edge of my seat, because I know something explosive is about to happen. That is what this kid is bringing to the table.
BCS vs Playoff debate
Interesting article on the pro BCS side that actually doesn't just just go with the tried and true "it's tradition" argument.
Our Tradition Video
We have a lot of great pregame videos, and they have always served their job at getting me even more fired up for a big game as well as sending repeated chills down my spine. My favorite for the past several years has been the "Our Tradition" video, as a relatively younger fan(graduated from UA in '09), I like seeing and subsequently learning about the legendary plays and players. From the Run in the Mud to the Goal Line Stand to Cornelius Bennett destroying Steve Beuerlein, they are all spectacular and I take pride in having such a long standing tradition of excellence.
Now the video has been heavily re-edited, including 13 plays from last year by my count. Judging from the crowds reaction to each highlight, it seems to have been the right move, as every play from last year received a huge cheer. But it seems to me that while yes, last year was important, it is still just 1 of 13 championships. Being the most recent it is the closest to the fans hearts, but to me that doesn't make it more important. We are not defined by one season, and last season does not make up 1/2 our tradition.
In my opinion there should be at max three plays from last year, I'd prefer only two. One has to be of Ingram, being our only Heisman winner, he is now a major piece of Alabama tradition, so he has to be in there. The most iconic play from the season is undoubtably Rocky Block, and that would be my choice for what else to put in, as there are several different adjectives that could be used to describe it. If you want a play from the Texas game, then throw in the Dareus interception.
Also, the immediate pregame videos are entirely comprised of plays from last year, as they should be. Those are what should get the crowd fired up, and they look better since they were all filmed in HD. It just seems to me that the Our Traditionr video should not sacrifice as much as it did for the sake of one year.
