WHO IS TO BLAME??
Michael Pineda will under go an arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn labium. Most predict he will be lost for a year. Curt Schilling maintains it will be more like 6 to10 months. He bases this on his own recovery experience. No matter what, he is gone for 2012. Time will tell when and how he returns.
We have heard the talk that Pineda showed up for spring training some 20 lbs overweight. The Yankees and their trainers, put him thru their fat farm and shed off those pounds. Sound familiar? Just like they did Phil Hughes. Hmmm he had shoulder problems as well and still is not up to his 2010 standard. Coincidence?? Who knows?
Then all Joe Girade ever said all spring is"We have a competition for the last three spots in the rotation." Joe coming from the Midwest (Peoria area), how much competition did you see for your catching position? Not much did you Joe? Yet, Joe kept throwing that competition word out there. "Just do your job." another famous Joe line. Dam he is still saying it. Is this his form of motivation? Not working so far Joe maybe try another approach. (Just look at Freddy Garcia and Phil Hughes 2012 stats, if you need a reason to change your approach)
I watched the first Spring training game that Pineda pitched. He looked awful good. All we heard about was that he was only throwing in the low 90's. Sure been a lot of pitchers in the big leagues who have thrived with a 90 mph fastball. On his third start he impressed again averaging around 92 mph on his fastball. Headlines everywhere coined a new word "Velo". This occurred when Michael tried to explain that his "Velo" would return to the 95 mph range. Russell Martin even chimed in and said it would rise when he hit the mound in a real game situation.
Funny thing was my son (a devoted Braves fan) and I watched his third start. My son stated. "No wonder the Yankees did not trade for Jair Jurrjens, this kid is good." I simply laugh and stated. "Looks to me like he is trying to over throw the ball. If he keeps that up he will be lucky to make it out of spring training." Once again the word "Velo" appeared across the sporting news. Everyone was questioning "Where is the "Velo"?
From the first day the kid arrived he was bombarded by the sporting media circus. Comments were made that he maybe only saw 2 or three reporters at his locker at any point and time last year, playing for the Mariners. So Brian Cashman did his best to try and relieve some of the pressure. Good move on his part but, the media paparazzi would not let up. He was hounded. Every reporter kept pounding home the"Velo" problem. Pineda responded by tell all that it would improve. No reporter ever seem to believe this 23 year old kid. They kept right on pushing. He kept trying his best to impress the sports media and coaches. That blazing fastball was still just hitting 94 mph a few times. Wow and that was not good enough to satisfy the media sharks. It was almost like a constant cheer of "Where is the Velo?" (Just like that old saying of "Where's the beef?")
Too many times we have seen a gifted young athlete burst on the scene. They have shown skill and ability above and beyond their years of age. Every word, out of their mouth and action is published and dissected. They are not allowed to be what they are, an outstanding young prospect. A kid who will make mistakes and learn from them.
Simple put no matter what you call the sporting or news media--Circus, Paparazzi, Reporters or Sharks---The blame lies at their door step for potentially ruining the career of another outstanding young prospect. So who are they going to ruin / injury next time during their reporting frenzy?
Somewhere along this road to a young man's injury and trying to impress all. Common sense was just not around.
AJ Burnett to the Pirates?
Rumors Rumors............... They are flooding the internet about A.J. Burnett and a possible trade to the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Quite obvious why the Yankees want to deal this inconsistent starter. Very hard to fit seven starters into a five man rotation.
Looking at the rumored trade of Garrett Jones to the Yankees, for AJ., no way this will happen in a straight up deal.
Here is why? I took a look at the Pirates top prospects, they are very weak in position players. Their strong point seems to be future pitchers, some nice talent there. With Jameson Taillon and Gerrit Cole heading the list.
The outfield looks like it is their strongest area in the minors. With Starling Marte, soon to break out in the next year or so. Marte looks to have all the tools for success in the big leagues. That followed up with Josh Bell the switching hitting power potential corner outfielder just beginning his career. Then throw in a Robbie Grossman and they look set in 3 to 5 years with this some of this group patrolling the outfield.
The only catcher in the top 20 is Tony Sanchez . Defensively, he is slightly above average. Has very little power potential. More of your singles hitter that may hit for a decent average.
Infielders beyond first basemen Alex Dickerson, and his dismal power outlook, they look pretty thin. Middle infielder like Alen Hanson and Jarek Cunningham do not show much bat potential at this point but they are in their early twenties. So who knows how they will progress in a couple years. These guys seem to be a few years away from even getting that big league opportunity.
There is little reason for the Pirates to trade away their starting right fielder and backup first basement for A.J. alone. The Yankees need to sweeten the pot.
The Pirates do not have anyone on the roster or in their top prospects that seem anywhere near ready to produce at an acceptable third basement's level. Could Brandon Laird be the key to a trade? He would shoot up on their prospect list, that is for sure. With his ability to play the infield corners and the outfield corners he might be the missing key to the trade. This would give the Pirates increasing versatility as they look to the future. Then again with what is now manning third for the Pirates, Laird might just be their big league starter at the hot corner.
What about Francisco Cervelli there was reported interest early this off-season from the Pirates. Cervelli would be an improvement over any current back-up catchers the Pirates have on their roster or in the minors.
What will it take to send A.J. packing to the Pirates and place Garrett Jones in pinstripes?
Prince Fielder?
What an addition Prince Fielder would be to the Yankees. That short porch in right field would definitely increase his home run output.
The most reported stumbling block for him to receive a six to ten year contract is his demand to be able to opt out of his contract in three years. This could cause a general manager to pull his hair out.
Fielders demand for an opt out clause, would allow him to hit the free agent market again at 30 years of age. That would allow Prince to obtain another large contract.
Would the Yankees go 25 to 28 million a year for three years? This might work out for that 189 million figure we keep hearing about for salaries in 2014. The Yankees have several million coming off the books before the 2014 season. (See spreadsheet below)
| NEW YORK AL | MLS thru '11 season | Updated 12/11 | salary + p-r bonus | |||||

It would be a wise move to sign Prince Fielder for three or four years.
What do you think?

Question about revenue sharing salary?
The Ranger posting fee exceeded 50 million. From my understanding, none of this money goes towards the Rangers actual Yu Darvish salary for revenue sharing.
My question is if a signing bonus is given does that bonus go towards revenue sharing salary?
For example: Yeonis Cespandis is given a six year contract for 24 million (6 yrs @ 4 million per year), with a signing bonus of 10 million. What is the actual dollar amount that the Yankees would have to declare for revenue sharing purposes?
Anyone know?
Alfonso Soriano back in pinstripes?
The Chicago Cubs have been in contact with several American league teams. They want to trade Alfonso Soriano. Supposedly willing to eat 80% of his contract. Would cost that team between 3 and 4 million a year for next three years.
Would he be a good fit for the New York Yankees? Can he still play the infield? Would he be nothing more than a fourth or fifth outfielder and DH?
If traded with Matt Garza would it lower the asking price to obtain Garza?
What are your thoughts?

Yu a Blue Jay? Prove it.
I keep reading all these articles about the Blue Jays winning the bid for Yu Darvish. Yet no one has confirmed it.
Rangers have reportedly been all in, well at least per an internal memo.
Yankees supposedly have submitted a modest bid.
Cubs have Theo and he did place a 51 million bid for Dice-K.
Rumors out there that Giants submitted a bid.
What I find the most interesting is that most executives in baseball believe that the Blue Jays submitted a bid in the upper 40 million range. Then reported out of Japan that the winning bid was higher than the amount posted for Dice-K. I find it hard to believe that the Blue Jays would submit this kind of money. If the winning bid is for over 51 million, as reported. So being realistic his contract will be larger than Dice-K. Probable in the neighbor hood of 5 or 6 years and between 60 to 80 million.Remember Yu is making close to 7 million a year now. If Jays were not going to give that money to a proven stud, (Roy Halladay). How can they do it now, a couple years later?
There is only one team in baseball that could absorb a contract of 110 to 130 million for a player, that just doesn't live up to the hype. That is the New York Yankees. With the constant rhetoric of pitching pitching coming out of the Yankees front office and the trade market for a stud being way too high. Then consider that this will be last year for teams to bid crazy on foreign studs or face a penalty . I wouldn't be surprised it the Yankees did made a bid it was not right up there with the highest bidder and maybe even the highest bid. For no other reasons to not allow a top notch pitcher to go to a divisional rival and or the American league champion the last two years. Because that is the Yankee way.
So Yankee fans there is hope because the fat lady has yet to sang.
Cubbie and Yankee trade?
Cubs want to rid themselves of Alfonso Soriano and Carlos Zambrano. Taking offers for Matt Garza.
Yankees fans want to see A.J. Burnett in another uniform. Bronx Bombers showing interest in Garza. Several attractive pieces in the minors. Such as David Phelps, Adam Warren and Chris Dickerson. With major league experienced Hector Noesi and Francisco Cervelli.
Could there be a trade here.
Basically AJ for Zambrano is a wash. Yankees would actually take on an addition 1.5 million. No one has or will predict that Carlos would become a Cy Young winner. So one year and done if he does not show the ability to be one of the best. Give both of these guys fresh starts. Maybe best of both worlds for both teams. If Carlos cannot act like a man, suspend him for rest of season and call it a career. Good news would be without pay. Yankees would then add 18 million to the budget for next years free agent class.
Garza for Warren, Phelps and Noesi. Yankees would add around 6 million to the payroll. Cubs would get three promising young pitcher. All three have much higher projections in the National League. This of course would unclog the minor league triple A rotation and let Killer B's progress.
Soriano for Cervilli and Chris Dickerson. Yankees would be stuck with an additional 63 million over next few years. But has been long rumored that Cubs would eat up to 50 million of the money owed to Alfonso. So key would be getting that salary down to a manageable 4 to 6 million a year over the rest of his contract. Then Yankees would have that fourth outfielder and lefty masher off the bench. Also would allow him to be trade bait if he does not work out. Cubs would get that needed back-up catcher that can handle a bat. This would relieve some of that catcher log jam the Yankees currently have. Then Dickerson would either become the regular left fielder or left handed fourth outfielder for the Cubs.
NEW YANKEES>>>Carlos Zambrano, Alfonso Soriano & Matt Garza
NEW CUBS>>> A.J. Burnett, Francisco Cervelli, Chris Dickerson, Adam Warren, David Phelps & Hector Noesi
What are your thought on this trade?
TOP TARGETS
The winter is around the corner and no Yankee signings, yet. Is that a good thing. Sure seems like the market is sky high for those top pitchers.
C.J. Wilson wanting 90 to 120 million for six years, depending on who you listen too. That seems crazy for a pitcher who has yet to truly dominate. 15 million a year seems reasonable for 4 years. He will get paid. I would pass on any thing with him longer than 4 yrs.
Roy Oswalt he is very interesting guy. Most likely looking for a 3 to 4 year deal around 50 to 70 million. With his back problems this does not seem like a good deal. Maybe 2 years and 30 million would entice him. Then again the health concerns are a major factor. So probable not going to happen.
Edwin Jackson is reportedly wanting a contract similar to A.J. Burnett. Not going to happen. Yankees might consider him for 48 million on a four year deal. But he has yet to show the ability to be consistent. So very unlikely to happen.
Mark Buehrle has show the ability to be consistent and reliable. The market seems to be four years and 60 million. To me, Buehlre seems like the best candidate of the group. Maybe a 48 million offer for three years would get it done.
Yu Darvish this looks like the real deal. But is it. From all the reports he is ready to start off his major league career. The concern is going to be the transition to major league baseball. Pitching on 5 days rest versus 7 days rest in Japan. Then the potato is different so how will that stuff pan out in American baseball. Looks like he might be the number one candidate as far as the Yankees are concerned. Wow just think about 40 to 50 million just for the right to negotiate with him? Then tack on a contract for around 50 to 70 million for 5 or 6 years. Easily could cost the Yankees 90 to 120 million to see him in Pinstripes one day.
Yoenis Cespedes have you seen the video? Does he every look like a stud? The question is can he make the jump to American society way of life? Sure looks like a five tool future star. Reportedly may take a 5 year deal for as much as 60 million to get his unproven services.
Hmmm I like the ideal of Mark Buehlre. He is in the mold of Andy Pettitte. Simply put he will not hurt but only help a rotation. The needed southpaw behind C.C. What is the most appealing is that it would give Manny Banuelos and Dellin Betances more time to develop. No matter what in three or four more years either they will the future of the Yankees rotation or gone to another team. So sign Mark.
Yu Darvish is worth the effort and the money. Yes he would be a luxury but hell they are the Yankees. He looks like the future stud that comes along once in a lifetime. Hopefully, when the dust clears he will be standing on the mound wearing Pinstripes. Go get him, pay the money.
I want Yoenis Cespedes. If obtained he suddenly makes the Yankees very dangerous. He gives them that replacement when Nick Swisher's deal is up. Also by making him the fourth outfielder he improves the defense. Many believe the Yankees would have the best defensive outfield in baseball. Then his speed could be put to use as that need pinch runner late in game. Yet by bringing him around at a slower pace he just might be become the brightest future star on the roster. Brian Cashman watch the video again, we need him.
"Now those signings would make for a great off-season."
IT IS NEARING THAT TIME OF THE YEAR
Disappointment in the way our team ended its season. But that is baseball.
Good solid core team. That has some needs. They are obviously not getting any young. So who stands out as potential free agents:
Pitchers:
1. CC Sabathia heads the list no question.
2. Next up has to be Mark Buehrle a southpaw that is in the mold of Andy Pettitte gives you 200 innings and a double digit win total. Like Andy has been there and done that. Best choice seeing he could be a number 2 or 3 starter on any team. I see a 2 or 3 year contract in 10 to 15 million a year range.
3. Yu Darvish worth the effort. Still an unproven commodity. Those numbers in Japan show a consistent starter who is young and can pitch. Demands the ball and shows no fear. I see him as a potential 1, 2 or 3 starter. With the pitching talent in the minor leagues he is a sure bet even if we have to wait till he full develops in the minor league for a year. Will cost around 80 to100 million. With his posting fee included but that should be a 4 or 5 year deal. A 25 year old that with potential galore.
4. C.J. Wilson so far so good. But has not proven that he is an ace over his career. Great two years but can he maintain is the question. He is lefty that should play well in New York. He will get a Burnett like contract that is for sure.
5. Freddie Garcia worth the risk on a 1 year deal . Still amazed at the number he put up in the American League East. 4 to 6 million price tag.
Outfield:
1. Carlos Beltran or nothing. With Swisher as the backup first basement this is a good move. He could DH and play the corner outfield positions. He would give days off to those outfielders and first base. Would not cost one defensively. Full year from knee surgery should see more stolen bases and a higher average. Protection for your outfielders and even Tex because of Swisher. Cost around 40 to 50 million for 3 years.
2. Nick Swisher is a given he should return for that 10.25 million price tag.
3. Josh Willingham would be one hell of an addition but would clog up the DH position. The question would be playing time to justify that contract.
Infield
1. Jose Reyes will cost a boat load of money no doubt. Most likely a 5 to 7 year deal. He may reach the Jason Werth range. With Jeter as his back up at short stop would improve the defense and allow Reyes to be rested more to avoid those injuries. This would move Jeter to third base and A-Rod to DH. No matter how you slice it will reach well over the 100 million dollar range. Most likely around 120 million for six years'
2. Albert Pujols by far the best choice between Prince Fielder and himself. I do not see him taking a lesser role on defense but he could spell the corners and DH. With his post season so far he will be well over a 200 million dollar deal.
3. Prince Fielder lot of money to spend on a DH for 6 years. That will be the stumbling block. Another monster in the middle of the order, Just too much money.
Summation:
Retain: Swisher and CC.
Buehrle and Darvish are the top pitchers here. Would like to see them both in pinstripes. Would allow the potential for further development of those minor league pitchers. Freddie seems to be the fall back option here if nether is signed. Still need that addition loogy out of the pen.
Position players to me Carlos Beltran makes a lot of sense. He gives you the backup plan for all three outfield positions, DH and first base. He s a switch hitter and the rumored is he wants to return to the New York area. Next up would be Reyes. The question here is are the Yankees ready to move their Captain? I think it is time. This is a solid choice when one looks out at the future. Albert will return to St Louis and Fielder will be too costly.
With the likes of Ivan Nova, Phil Hughes and those minor league pitching group back in the fold the Yankees have options. Jesus Montero is a unique option. Looks like he maybe the future. Question will remain where does he fit in? I see him being the backup catcher, DH, first base and corner outfield. He might be an option as the backup at third as well. Then again he maybe in a different uniform if an ace become readily available.
Trade deadline is nearing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well it is that time of year when the rumors swirl like a tornado. But this year seems different for the Yankees, more like a whirlwind. The team the Yankees field are doing well but yet in second place in the AL East, with that dreaded Boston Red Sox team leading the way.
So what do we need to catch those devils up north or to kick their butts come post season time. We need an upgrade in our Starting Rotation, DH, Lefty out of the Bullpen and someone to hold down Third Bbase (till A-Rod returns). Will we get all four? Highly unlikely in this trade market.
Starting Pitching: The only potentially available top line starter for the Yankees seem to be Ubaldo Jimenez. But Yankees must choose which arm and which leg to include in that trade. James Shields is a no go. Tampa would probable only consider trading him to a National league team. Francisco Liriano maybe be available from the Twins but most likely not till the off season. Mark Buehrle is a good choice but he will not be considered till this off season when he becomes a free agent. The Cubs have potential but anyway one looks at it, would cost way too much either by salary or prospects.Specially for what one would get in return.
Loogy reliever: No one wants to give up anyone like that. They are way too hard to find. The good lefty out of the pen seems to be something one gets as a free agent or develops in house. So dream on Yankee fans.........
DH: Carlos Beltran what else needs said. He is the best choice and with his ability to play in the outfield makes sense. The truth is he may be seen in Pinstripes, but probable not till the free agency period. So far Yankees are not willing to give up any prospects to secure his services. Still possible but to me they will wait till season is over and pursue him. I believe there is no doubt he is the best option and maybe the only option.
Third Base: Aramis Ramirez is best candidate, but what would you do with him once Alex returns. If you give him majority if his starts at third then this makes sense. The question become what would you be willing to give up? Odds are against this move. Ramirez is and would only be a rental and you would loose a good prospect or two for his services. Then there is Ty Wigginton, he would not be nothing more than a place holder till A-Rod returns. The thought of him being able to play several position would make him a good choice. Ty is signed through 2012 so his value to the Yankees multiplies.
Can Bronx Bombers kill two birds with one stone? Colorado Rockies are indeed looking like an after thought this year. Their future needs look like they need a First basement (Todd Helton getting older), Second base, Third base, Outfield and some Starting pitching. They have some strong potential prospects in the minor leagues but most seem to be a few years away from becoming ready for the big league. The good news in that is they have a good looking catcher (Wilin Rosario) who is hitting well and throwing out over 40 percent of would be base thieves. They have two left handers who rank in top fifty prospects but are along ways away. (Tyler Matzek and Christian Friedrich).
Here is a trade that would benefit all.
| COLORADO: | NEW YORK: | |||
| PLAYER | POSITION | PLAYER | POSITION | |
| Ubaldo Jimenez | SP--#1-2 | Ivan Nova | SP #2-4 | |
| Ty Wigginton | 1B, 2B, 3B & OF | Hector Noesi' | SP #3-5 | |
| Chris Nelson | SS, 2B & 3B | Adam Warren | SP #3-5 | |
| Chris Dickerson | OF | |||
| Brandon Laird | 1B, 3B & OF | |||
| Jorge Vazquez | 1B & 3B | |||
| Eduardo Nunez | SS, 2B, 3B & OF |
Brian Cashman can you throw this stone? Maybe even sweetin the pot by adding David Adams (2B) or David Phelps (SP).
Colorado are you wanting to get better or just pretending?
Ubaldo Jiminez?
Rumors are flowing about the possibility of the Colorado Rockies giving up there ace, Ubaldo Jiminez.. No doubt he is one of the top 10 pitchers in the National League and in some circles in the top five. He had an outstanding year in 2010 and is 27 years old. He started the 2011 season out very slowly but has come on in his last 8 starts.
The Rockies needs seem to be for a future corner infielder, second basemen, center fielder and of course starting pitching. With no prospect in the top fifty, they need help. With 37 year old Todd Helton manning first, they need a future replacement and none seem to be in their farm system. Third and or Second are there for the taking, for any decent prospect. That is because Ty Wigginton is aging and can play one or the other for them, but for how long. Center field is a position that needs a bat, so far it has been a situation of defense over a bat, just like a second basement. So far defense has been the best option at either of these positions. The Rockies are desperate for starting pitching, with nothing nearing the major league level in the next few years.
So where and how would the Yankees match up. We are hearing that the Rockies like Jesus Montero, but would use him at first base. They have no interest in him being nothing else except for a back up catcher possible. So this reduces the value of Montero. That brings us to center field an area that a Greg Golson, Justin Maxwell or Chris Dickerson, might be a good option for the Rockies. Then we look at second base we have Corban Joseph by far better than any current option in the Rockies system. Potential starting pitching is our strong suit and would require a least one and maybe two major league talent or two and / or a future ace. We obviously have Ivan Nova, Hector Noesi, Adam Warren, Dellin Betances and Andrew Brackman. We have Eduawardo Nunez who has been a pleasant surprise at the plate this year but a disappointment in the field. But he can play 3B, 2B, SS and a corner outfield position. From watching him play, he is seems better suited for second base, because he has a tendency to wait on the ball rather than charge it. So what would it take?
My feeling are that they would mix and match from Yankees.
1. Ivan Nova
2. Eduwardo Nunez
3.Jesus Montero
4 Dellin Betances
5. Chris Dickerson
6. Hector Noesi
7. Corban Joseph
9. Justin Maxwell
10. Adam Warren
11. Andrew Brackman
12. Greg Colson
Most report confirm that they would require at least three prospect and maybe up to five. Personally I believe a package of Nunez, Nova, Laird / Dickerson and Noesi / Bellantice would get the job done.
Top three available lefty starters?
Well it is that time of year. All eyes turn to what trades will Yankees make to push them over the top. As always they will be looking high and low for a left handed starter. So who are the top three left handers that might be available?
We hear of John Danks and Francisco Liriano as possibilities. Looks like the only way to get Liariano would be if Joe Maurer cannot catch full time anymore. Of course that leads to a trade rumor of Jesus Montero for Francisco Liriano. Hard to believe that would be done till after the season. Danks would be one of the last ones that White Soxs would part with. His contract is one that is too easily managed, for the Soxs to let him go.
So who do they choose? To me here are the top three available:
| Name | Age | Team | Average innings | ERA | Salary |
| Paul Maholm | 29 | Pittsburgh Pirates | 210 | 4.37 | 6.5 million thru 2011 |
| Mark Buehrle | 32 | Chicago White Soxs | 223 | 3.84 | 14 million thru 2011* *another 15 million for 2012 if traded |
| Wandy Rodriguez |
32 | Houston Astros | 197 | 4.09 |
34 million thru 2013 |
Paul Maholm would head the list. His contract is set to expire at seasons end so he truly would be a rental. He has pitched better than his ERA has suggested. Consistently been an innings eater. Still under thirty years of age. Hard to excel on a team that is destined to be the doormat of baseball. A change of scenery would do him good.
Mark Buehrle is probable the best of the three. He has post season experience and has been in the American League for a long time. His biggest draw back is that trade clause. He will cost an additional 15 million for next year if traded. He has held that title of ACE for quite awhile.Soxs have been using a six man rotation off and on this year. So Mark becomes expendable specially with the potential for another large free agent contract next year.
Wandy Rodriguez is a good lefty on a bad team. He has never been consider an Ace type pitcher. Would be more of a 4th or 5th starter on most contending teams. Since the Astros consider him an Ace he would cost a lot of minor league talent. The other concern here is he is signed through 2013 and is owed 34 million. Not too extreme for the Yankees, but has never pitched in the American League East.
Will we see any of these guys in pinstripes this year?
Internal Relief
Wow, our bullpen has gone from lights out to a disaster waiting to happen. Not many options in the minors that make sense. We are in dire straits with a starting rotation that seems set to pitch six innings or less on average. We need help finishing off games. We have potentially two that are considered reliable. Rest are simply in question.
Looking at triple A: The best pitchers we have are starters. Do we risk promoting a starter just for this season and potential ruin his progress. If we place them in long relief we might be OK, but the innings they will miss will have an impact on the future.
Long relief: Hector Noesi needs to return to the long relief role, he might become our seventh inning guy. He did a respectable job in long relief. Hate to admit it but next option should be Carlos Silva he has experience as a reliever in the majors. After these two we may want to look at David Phelps, D.J. Mitchell or Adam Warren for long relief. These three have pitched the best. I would prefer to leave these three alone unless it is for long relief or as a spot starter. Maybe time for Yankees to move Andrew Brackman to the pen to see if his control and heat live up to expectations out of the pen. So far they have not done so as a starter. This would allow those other two "Killer Bees" to get promoted from double A to triple A..
Left handed specialist looks like Randy Flores is the best choice, because of previous experience. Andrew Sisco is intriguing but control is the question. The the lizard, Kei Igawa, is the third option. Boy do we need some left handed relievers. None of these guys give a manager a warm fuzzy feeling that is for sure. Obvious our manager needs at least two left handed options at this time.
Here is my choices:
1. Randy Flores the other lefty.-----replace Jeffrey Marquez
2. Hector Noesi long relief / relief. -----replace Lance Pendleton
3. Carlos Silva long relief / relief. ----- replace Amauri Sanit
Cashman needs to deliver help to our bullpen via a trade ASAP.
Nova for Zambrano?
Ivan Nova has had an up and down season. He has talent. Truth is that the in two years we will have forgotten his name. That seems to be the time table for the 'Killer Bees' to arrive. Ivan is just keeping a spot, warm for one of 'Killer Bees'.
Now Carlos Zambrano has been an above average pitcher his entire career. Stuck in Chicago for the laughable Cubs. A team that does not have any veteran leadership. He is know for his fire and drive. Even calling out fellow teammates for their lack of production. Once again he is in the news for his frustration of being on a team that seems to find a way to loose. All one hears is that the Cubs must part with probable their best player.
I would trade Nova for Zambrano in a heart beat. This is particular interesting since no longer would Zambrano be saddle with a team that cannot get over the hump. With a depleted farm system it is time for the Cubbies to deal. The Yankees offer him a totally fresh start. They also have proven leadership that could and would help him succeed. This would be the chance to play for a team that has the tradition of being a winner. Who once again ranks as the best offensive team in baseball and a top 5 defensive team. This to me would be worth the risk. This makes it even more promising, because in 2 years the 'Killer Bees' will be ready.
Sorry Ivan, but I would take the risk?
Yankees need a couple of left handers
Started looking through the rosters of potential left-handed pitchers in the big leagues. To my surprise only one relief pitchers stood out. That lefty out of the pen was Scott Downs and his 5 million dollar contract with the Angels. Then again only a fire-sale seemed to be in order for the Yankees to pick up a good lefty in anyone's rotation. Very obvious that no team within our division will want to improve the Yankees.
Here is my brief list of potential available left handed starters:
Mark Buehrle -- Seems to head the list because of White Sox failures this year and that 14 million owed
John Danks -- Potential galore but erratic is the word and 6 million owed.
Francisco Liriano -- His consistency for the Twins is the problem and 4.3 million owed.
Johan Santana -- Disable list and Mets need to dump his 19 million salary. Will admit he is intriguing.
Wandy Rodriguez -- Astros need help and none seem to be in their farm system. Easily see dumping his 7.5 million.
Joe Saunders -- 5.5 million owed, best reason for Diamondbacks to part ways with him.
Ted Lilly -- The Dodgers have 8.166 million reasons to let him go.
The Yankees sure seem to match up well with these teams and their needs, in regards to a trade.
The best trade match up maybe for Liriano. The Twins have a problem at catcher. Do they continue to punish their best player behind the plate. Should they move him to another position or at least make him the everyday DH and back-up catcher. Is it desperation time in Minnesota? We have the backstops to entice them.
The White Sox are near capacity on their budget and will need to move either Danks or Buehrie but when is the question? What will the Sox want for either of these player.
Then Wandy Rodriguez comes to mind. With so many holes in their line-up maybe the easiest trade possibility.
Next on the list is Joe Saunders, Ted Lilly or Johan Santanna. Question here is do we really want any of these pitchers. Santanna is the most intriguing but will he recover from his surgery to even be able to pitch this year. If so will he return to his former self?
The Angels have Scott Downs but he will come at a huge price. Maybe too steep for a left handed reliever. I would have given up the first round draft choice for him.
Man-Ban anyone? Maybe sooner than later. He is the stud lefty on everyone's radar in our minor league system.
What are Yankees going to do?
Phil Hughes is currently on the mend. Kevin Millwood is nearing decision time. Carlos Silva is ready to start his possible return to the majors. Then there is Francisco Cervelli fast approaching a return to the back-up catcher's role he seems to thrive at. Remember that guy Mark Prior.
I think all in all this is a good thing for the Yankees. I could easily see the Yankees put Hughes back to the pen and be ready to return to the rotation, once his arm strength show positive signs of recovery. This would allow Yankees to have that arm ready to go if anyone is injured or falters. Then again he may return to take Ivan Nova's spot in the rotation.
Time for Millwood to replace or at least dislodge Ivan Nova from the rotation and make Ivan our long reliever. Millwood is showing signs of being ready to return to the majors any day. A lot depends on Nova's next start. He could end up back in the minors or in the pen where he does not seem to thrive. Time to see just what Millwood can bring to the table.
Carlos Siva is basically re-doing his spring training. Supposedly, he is losing weight and building more over all body strength. Could it be true that a slimmer and trimmer Sliva is on his way. He would be a better addition to the bullpen than Lance Pendleton. But, he is obviously about two to three weeks away from that decision. So far all indication are that he is progressing nicely. This is easy to say till he faces a live game situation. The only true concern with this signing is how will he blend in with the Yankee club house.
Cervelli is doing his rehab work. He is getting in as many at bats as possible before he gets the nod to return to the Yankees. With this 16 games in 16 days looming, he is needed sooner than later. So far all is going as planned and he could be back this week. Potentially he could be in the line-up by mid-week.
Prior is currently on the disable list, with a leg issue. He was showing strong signs of becoming a force out of the pen. He maybe the best option for the Yankees, in the future if anyone in the bullpen goes down to an injury or simply is not getting the job done out of the pen. He has shown that he is nearing a return to the majors. This is one of those feel good stories that everyone just wants to see happen. He has definitely been through a tirade of injuries the past few years. Here is hoping that we see Mr Prior in pinstripes this year.
2011 Roster
Spring Training is winding down. Been an interesting spring that is for sure. Lots of oblique injuries, a starting pitcher's Battle Royal for the final two spots in the rotation and long reliever. Not to mention a new batting style for Derek Jeter. The resurgence of Alex Rodriguez and Curtis Granderson. AJ Burnet seeming to return to form. An old familiar face as the new DH, Jorge Posada. A chance to see the killer B's in action, specially 'Man-Ban' doing his thing.
So here is my opinnion on who opens the season as a New York Yankee:
STARTING PITCHERS:
1. CC Sabathia
2. AJ Burnett
3. Phil Hughes
4. Ivan Nova
BULLPEN:
10. David Robertson
11. Boone Logan
12. Freddy Garcia
Catchers:
13. Russell Martin
14. Gustavo Molina (till Francisco Cervelli returns)
15. Jorge Posada
INFIELDERS:
16. Derek Jeter
17. Robinson Cano
18. Mark Teixeira
19. Alex Rodriguez
20. Eduardo Nunez
21. Eric Chavez
OUTFIELDERS:
22. Brett Gardner
23. Nick Swisher
24.Curtis Granderson
25. Andruw Jones
Possible trades:
Looks like Sergio Mitre will become trade bait to secure a backup outfielder or a backup catcher.
Ramiro Pena maybe moved to get a backup outfielder or returned to triple A.
On the verge:
Justin Maxwell may be on opening roster to replace Granderson (good chance he will be on the injury list to open season) and will be first outfielder called upon. This kid has five tools, seems destined to be an every day starter or at least a fourth outfielder one of these days.
First option for DH will be Jorge Vasquez, he can hit, but not nothing to brag about in the field.
Looks like Kevin Millwood (if signed) will be first call-up for long reliever or starter if any falter.
Mark Prior seems to be getting better and better could be a bullpen call up during the season at anytime. He seems to be recovering nicely and is about ready to help.
Then there is Manny Banuelos ('Man-Ban') what a surprise, he should get the nod either mid-season or will open next year in the starting rotation. Would not surprise anyone to see him make the roster this spring. This kid is going to be a front end starter sooner than later.
Looks like Jesus Montero will return to triple A and be a mid season call-up or on the roster opening day next year. He seems to be pressing and is not getting comfortable behind the plate. Looked good behind plate early. He simply is just not getting the job done. But, Yankees could add him to roster and look to move Cervilli. As always he could be in a package for an ace on another team.
Is now the time to trade for the Big Z?
The Cubs just made a big splash for Matt Garza. The problem is the Cubs gave up way too many prospects. They parted ways with 3 of their top 10 top prospects. They are still a long ways off from being a contender in the National League Central. With the Reds, Cardinals and Brewers in this division hard to believe that anything above a third place finish would be possible.
Sure they added Carlos Pena but his .200 batting average will not get it done. They have one of the highest paid performers in Alfonso Soriano but he is a shell of the player they signed. Soriano at best is worth a third of what they are paying him. So a power corner outfielder is in their prayers. Second base is a consistent question mark. Bull pen has improved with the signing of Kerry Wood but as always injuries will be the judge of that. Starting pitching is better but no way Carlos Silva (and his 12 million contract) has the same year as he did last year. They are looking very bleak behind the plate in the future and their current backup catcher Koyie Hill is on the fast track out of baseball. A lot of people believe Starlin Castro needs to move to second base, because his defense is very questionable. No doubt they will need to make a huge free agent signing next year and a couple minor additions. To accomplish that task they need to lower their payroll.
Zambrano looked great his last eight starts but Cubs have grown tired of his antics and has become a poor role model for their younger pitchers. He needs a change of scenery. He would be a great fit in the Yankees rotation. With the likes of Derek Jeter, Jorge Posada, Andy Pettitte (if he comes back) and Mariano Rivera as mentors he would become a solid team mate. Has consistently shown he is one of those so called bulldogs when he has the ball in his hand on the mound. He is a fierce competitor. It would do him good to be one of the guys rather than the "STUD" in a rotation.
Now maybe the best time to trade for Carlos Zambrano. I am a firm believer that he can be had for David Adams, Ivan Nova or Hector Noesi and Francisco Cervelli or low level catcher. Then again a combination of Eduardo Nunez or Kevin Russo and Ivan Nova or Hector Noesi might just get the job done. Would not surprise me to see the Cubs throw in some money to lessen the cost of Carlos this year. Especially if they would receive an additional or a better prospect.
So can you get this done Brian Cashman?
Carlos Beltran and or Johan Santanna anyone?
Mets seem to be in a rebuilding mode and a salary dump. Obvious, too many on this team that have very large salaries for a team that has so many needs.
Their needs seem to be many. Stating pitching, second basemen and a catcher. They do have a couple of interesting players that would be great additions to their cross town rivals. With Carlos Beltran in the last year of his contract it would be the time for them to move him. Then we have Johan Santana who realistically will not be available till around June or July of 2011.
Beltran is probable the first one to go. He should now be fully recovered from his knee surgery. He is a switch hitter who plays above average defense, always around a .280 batting average, good power (25 or more home runs a year) and swipes around 25 bases a year. He has always been a five tool player. Has show ability to rise to the occasion, just look what he did for the Astros during their last run at a world series championship. Will make over 19 million this year.
Johan Santanna has always been consider one of the best south paws in the big leagues. Has won a Cy Young and has maintain an ERA of .310 for his entire career. He can be dominating. He is due over 20 million in 2011 and his contract runs thru 2014. The risk here is how will he recover from recent shoulder surgery.
So what would it take to get either of these guys in Pinstripes for next year. The Yankees actually match up quite well, in regards to a trade for either of these guys. The Yankees minor league strengths are exactly what the Mets need the most. Mets would be in heaven to remove over 19 million from their payroll.
To land Beltran it would take at least a top catching prospect, second basemen and a top pitching prospect. Now Santanna would the hardest to land. He most likely would command a couple of prized pitching prospects, second basement and a top catching prospect. But, Mets should be willing to pay a portion of his 2011 salary.
What would it take to land either of these guys? Any opinions?
Help: Who do the Yankees want in the next amatuer draft?
Apparent that Yankees do not want to give up any draft choices, this off season. We hardly hear of anyone they are considering that would result in them losing a draft choice. Every time a type A free agent is consider we here the same thing. Would they be willing to give up a draft choice? We have heard this consistently over this hot stove season. The Yankees seem to be only considering a trade as a means to up grade bull pen or starting rotation. So what do they want in the upcoming draft?
So who can shed some light on who they actually covet? Any thoughts on this?
All Quiet on the Eastern Front!
Sure is weird not to hear about any rumored players coming to the Yankees. Even during the season we hear of a possible trade or a suggested trade. This too quiet.
No more rumors of the Big Z (Carlos Zambrano) coming to the Bronx Zoo? Nothing about Johan Santana coming in June or July? No Carlos Beltran in the future for the Yankees?
Nope nothing but possible reunion with Johnny Damon. Manny Ramirez coming to make the Red Sox's cringe. Those rumors have been quickly dispelled.
Wonder why no Yankee rumors out there. Is this a sign that the Yankees finally realize that loose lips sink ships. Could it possible be that the Brian Cashman has decided to audition his stud prospects in the minors? Has patience finally became a virtue of the Yankees?
Ok guys time for us to speculate: Who do you think the Yankees will sign or trade for as a starting pitcher? Who should they get to complete their bench?
Is 2011 the year of rookies?
Spend some time read about some of our stud prospects lurking in the minor leagues. Does any of those so called kids have what it takes?
Pitching:
1. Ivan Nova had a very respectable showing last fall for the Yankees. As things stand now he is most likely the fourth or fifth stater. If an additional starter or two are picked up then he might stick as the long reliever. I always remember what Earl Weaver said about rookie starters 'They must first prove they are long relievers, before every being placed in the starting rotation." This came from a manager that had four twenty game winners in one season. (Top that Philadelphia Phillies.)
2. Hector Noesi does not look to be much more than a number 4 or 5 pitcher in the future. Just doesn't have that outstanding curve or slider. Hopefully he can get that issue worked out. Honestly maybe a fill in if some starter falls to the injury bug.
3. Andrew Brackman seems to be progressing from his arm troubles at a rapid rate. Projected to be a 1 or 2 starting pitcher. Has all the tools. Is he ready to assume that role? Probable not, because of being only 1 year removed from his surgery. Most believe Yankees want him to stay in the minors another year to build up that shoulder strength . By mid season who knows, this guy seems for real.
4. Delin Betance another right hander who finally has showed that he is beyond his recent arm problems. As of now he is definitely behind the before mention. Once again Yankees most likely want him to build up strength to lessen the potential for another injury set-back. He needs innings.
5. Manny Banuelos is the top lefty in the Yankees farm system. He is an intriguing option. Seems to possess that poise of a front end starter. Has outstanding stuff and can bring the heat. Most scouts rave on his ability and pitching knowledge. He seems to standout because of that poise he possess. Specially at such a young age. If any long shot has a chance to open the season as the number 5 starter, he just might be the one.
Catchers:
1. Jesus Montero is a can't miss hitter. Most are not sure where he fits in. His defensive skills are lacking, 15 passed balls last year in 105 games is not getting it done. With Jorge Posada being the DH and Alex Rodriquez lurking, he does not seem to fit here either. I for one am amazed that he has not started working out in the outfield or even third. If he could fill in as a backup catcher, 4th outfielder or backup third basemen, then his at bats would increase this year. He then would be on the roster sooner than later. But that bat is special. So maybe and early call up if he gets his defense in order.
2. Austin Romine has all the skills. At this point is the best all around catcher in the minor league system. His offense is very respectable,( no where near Montero's). Just might be the best option as the backup catcher, this year. If not, could be the first name called if an injury occurs to one of our catchers.
3. Gary Sanchez what a talent. So far project to be the best catcher in the farm system, (yes, even better than Jesus). Good defensive skill set and a very strong bat. He needs work. At this point the more the better. So hard to believe he can jump over any of the other two catchers.
Infielders and Outfielders:
1. Eduardo Nunez is on the verge of potentially replacing Derek Jeter at short. Very good bat. Can make those eye opening plays in the field. Yet a routine grounder at times seems like an adventure. The word here is focus, he needs to maintain his focus. Very likely he will be on the bench for the Yankees as a reserve. He can play either corner outfield position, middle infielder or third.
2. Brandon Laird has been tearing the cover off the ball the last two years. His primary position has been at third, but he has been playing left in the fall league. The question here is how much would it impair his development to be the backup at third and the outfield. If he could some how get 80 games or more of major league experience, he would be a great player to have on the bench. Then be groomed to replace Alex (or even Jeter) at third. The question here is how much time would he get in the majors? Personally, I like the idea of him being a reserve. His bat has arrived and should be a strong option off the bench. He will need playing time that is for sure.
Broken Options? Low risks and High rewards.
So here we are close to the Holiday season. Yankees still are waiting for Andy Pettitte to decide what his future is. Looks more and more like the Yankees need two proven starters.
With the best options being Ivan Nova and Sergio Mitre as the two candidates to fill the back end of the rotation. Nova definitely showed some progress late last year. But, Mitre has yet to show much other than being a fill in candidate or a mop-up specialist.
So Yankees seem to be beating the bushes look for a potential starter. Then we come to Brandon Webb and Jeff Francis. Both would be looked at as potential back-end of the rotation starters.
Webb is a former Cy Young winner and has played in a pitchers ball park. Mainly with the Diamondbacks,. He still seems to have not regained his fastball. Current reports are that he is sitting around 87 mph on that pitch. Good news about him is that he is know for his work ethics. He has always been a pitcher that gets a lot of ground ball outs. The biggest problem with Webb will be his salary. He is reportedly looking for a 10 million dollar deal. If healthy and he has returned to form, this would be realistic. Most teams feel that is too much to ask. If signed for 5 million or less and rest of money was incentive laden then maybe a good choice. What a deal if he returns to his old form.
Jeff Francis is an intriguing option. He is a left-hander who has played most of his career as a Colorado Rockies. No doubt about it Coors field is a hitters ballpark. He seems to hover around 4.00 as far as his era goes. Not stellar by any means. The part that seems to make sense here is the fact he is a lefty. What is a fact is he will be two years from his surgery. This should allow him to be much stronger. He most likely could be had for under 5 million a year specially with incentives. What I like about this is the fact that if he did not work out as a starter he could be moved to the pen. This would cause opposing managers to flip- flop their lineup. He has a good ground ball rate and seems to be able to get left handed hitters out. So if he was moved to the pen and Sergio was the fifth starter the Yankees would not loose much there.
It will be interesting to see how each of these options are viewed by the Yankee brain trust. Too be honest "patience" is the word. I would love to see a block buster trade for another front of the rotation starter. That will not happen anytime soon. So maybe it is indeed time to "Bring on the Rookies"! Auditions anyone?
Tiring of the Cliff Lee Saga?
I for one am tired of hearing that Cliff Lee is the Yankees Messiah. Yes, he would be quite an addition. But, no doubt he has caused the Yankees and Rangers to seemingly to abandon any other option.
Time for some new action and conversation. Well, Zack Greinke is available and for whatever reason the Royals want the Yankees to make them an offer. Reportedly, the Royals want a potential starter and up the middle help in the field. The glaring needs of the Royals are a catcher, center fielder (lead off type) and a middle infielder. Maybe even a starting pitcher. The Royals seem to have a lot of potential starters in their farm system. Looks like the Yankees match up very well here.
If (key word here) Yankees land Russell Martin, many of their stud catching prospects become just that prospects. Most in baseball agree that Jesus Montero is a cannot miss bat. He is very much a suspect in the field. Austin Romine is considered to be the better option for the Yankees future catching needs or even a Gary Sanchez. We should not for get Francisco Cervilli either.
Middle infielders maybe an area of concern for the Yankees moving forwards. Derek Jeter is no spring chicken. So would the likes of a Eduardo Nunez, Kevin Russo or Ramiro Pena be on the Royals mind? All have big league experience but it appears that Pena is the least attractive of this bunch.
Center fielders are not a current strong point of the Yankees. Only one that sticks out here is Brett Gardner. He would definintely fill those needs for the Royals.
Pitching maybe a lot easier to match the Royals needs. Ivan Nova performed well last year for the Yankees in both triple A and the big leagues. Anyone of the killer B's maybe an option but none seem ready to step up to the major leagues. Joba Chamberlain or David Robertson maybe an option here as well.
I think that the Yankees would be in on a trade that offered Gardener, Cervilli, Nova and Nunez. Something to remember here is each of these players have proven major league experience. I also believe they would be up for exchanging or adding any of these players to sweeten the pot. The likes of Sanchez, Russo, Chamberlain, Robertson or one of the killer B's.
Why not Montero or Romine? Montero's bat and poor defensive skills may force him to a corner outfield position. To me Romine is going to be the better all around catcher for the Yankees in the future. He is a better fielder and swings an above average bat. If Yankees trade Gardener then Montero will become a starting corner outfielder and back-up catching option for the Yankees to replace Brett. That would mean that Romine would become the young catcher being groomed to replace Posada. Something to consider here is that Cervilli would be a bridge catcher till a prospect (Sanchez) is ready for the Royals. Always a possibility that either of these catchers might be included. But I hope Montero stays.
The Yankees realize that Chamberlain and Robertson have a lot of trade potential. So if either one is traded the Yankees would lessen the potential talent the Royals might receive. Yes they might be a candidate but the Royals are looking for as much potential as possible.
So little wonder the Royals are wanting the Yankees to pursue trading for their Ace.
What are your thoughts on this potential trade?
Russell Martin?
Why are we hearing of a new bidding war between the Red Soxs and the Yankees? Over, of all other things, a catcher?
Russell Martin few years ago was a young stud catcher on his way to be a super star. Then the injury bug kicked Martin right square in the ass. Supposedly, he is fully recovered and is to begin his work out regime to be a starting catcher this spring.
So why the interest? Russell begin his career as an infielder, then was converted to a catcher, (even won a gold glove) a position he took too much like a duck to water. What is the most interesting thing about Martin is the fact of his ability to play second base, first base and third base. Not to mention the possibility of being a corner outfielder. What an incredible thing to have in a catcher. Gives a manager so much flexibility. Specially when Jorge Posada seems to only available for about 20 to 30 games behind the dish and a major defensive upgrade over the Francisco Cervelli.
Looks like he would get around 70 to 80 games behind the plate, 20 to 30 at third, another 10 to 20 as a corner outfielder and another 5 to 10 as a DH. Be available as a catching defensive replacement and a good right handed bat off the bench if needed. Then if Yankees do decide that it is time for Jesus Montero to be their catcher he can receive major tutelage for two proven every day catchers and be brought around slowly to assume the full time duties behind the plate. Plus in the event of a trade for a front line starting pitcher he makes it so much more attractive for the Yankees to part with one of their stud catching prospects.
So what is your thought on Russell Martin become a Yankee?
L
Carl Crawford
Everyone agrees that Cliff Lee is far and away the number one free agent the Yankees are seeking. Hard not to agree with this choice. He has more than proven he can pitch in a major market. What a pedigree during the post season. No doubt in most baseball analysts minds he would make the Yankees pitching staff one of, if not the best in baseball. Specially if Andy Pettitte returns. The bidding war for his services are ready to heat up.
Now we are hearing rumblings about Carl Crawford being a potential signing of the Yankees. Many believe this is nothing more than a posturing move by the Yankees. Or is it? Yeah their having interest will surely increase the offers to Carl from the likes of the Angels and the Red Sox.
So why would the Yankees want to sign Carl Crawford? We keep hearing that he is merely Plan 'B' (Trading of one of their existing outfielders for a front line starter.), if the Yankees are unable to sign Cliff Lee. It has been reported that he would cost as much as the entire outfield in place now in the Bronx. Not worth the price difference between Crawford and Brett Gardner. Since, most view Brett as as a potential lead off hitter of the future for the team in pinstripes. Gardner is an about average defender and has a good on base percentage. But suffers mightly in the experience department when compared to Crawford.
Well here is my take. Yes, Carl Crawford will cost the Yankees around 15 to 20 million a year, most likely for 6 to 7 years. He is a Gold Glover in left field. Not even Gardner covers as much ground. He is constantly among leaders in steals every year. Has the ability not only to steal second but third as well. Brett has not shown that. Carl's batting average hovers around .300 every year. So far Gardner has not show anywhere near that consistency at the plate. Power wise, no question he has the edge, and most likely for the rest of his career. Then last season he turned into quite a number three hitter for the Rays. No one in baseball causes as much havoc on the bases as does Carl Crawford. He is a major distraction for any catcher or pitcher. This makes for better pitches to hit for any batter at the plate. If you do not believe me, just go ask any pitcher or catcher in the American League. Better yet just go ask any fan or player from Bean-town, that witness him stealing six bases on them last year.
Now, the news from Mo's and the Captain's new contract is their is quite a sum of deferred money involved. Would Andy Pettite's contract contain more of this deferred money? Could this deferred money not be made available for the signing of Carl Crawford? (Sure would reduce his actual cost to the Yankees.) One thing that seemed to lacking last season for the Yankees other than a dominant starting rotation, was Brett Gardener coming in as a pinch runner and a defensive replacement. He gave them the ability to put additional pressure on any battery in baseball. Not to mention would not be much of a let down when he played the field. So why not keep that outfield intact and add the most disruptive player in baseball to the mix. One Carl Crawford.
Free Agents and their impact on the 2011 Yankees
It seems to be a given that Derek Jeter , Mariano Rivera, and Andy Pettitte (only question mark of the three) will return in pinstripes for 2011 season. We all have heard that the Yankees are in on Cliff Lee. Now rumors abound that they are talking to Carl Crawford. Eyeing Russell Martin for their catching needs. Shown interest in Scott Downs. Finally, hoping to resign Kerry Wood. So what impact would all or any of these signings make.
No doubt about Lee being an ace. Overall would be a tremendous addition to any rotation. Only draw back here is money and the progression of Ivan Nova. This would make Nova a bullpen option for the 2011 season, back-up plan for your rotation or a trade piece.
Carl Crawford, WOW, what else needs to be said. The man has all the tool defensively and offensively. Potentially would hold back the progressing Brett Gardner. This signing makes a lot of sense. Crawford would enhance any lineup both defensively and offensively. He has long been a player the Yankees have wanted. His signing could make Brett Gardener expendable or at least the number four outfielder on this team. Rumors abound that Yankees are looking in to trade for Zack Greinke. Been obvious for a number of years that the Royals need a young lead-off hitter. Just might happen, specially since Nova would become even more expendable, if Lee is signed.
Why Russell Martin? Well he has won a gold glove as a catcher and is only 27. Would be the perfect addition to help Jesus Montero become the full time starting catcher for the Yankees. Yes he has some issues with his hip but suppose to be right on schedule to return to full duties as a catcher. What is missed here by many is that Martin has played both third and second base in 2003. Would become a very attractive option to give A-Rod some time off; possible spell Tex at first as well and even spell Cano at second. Not to mention he has played the outfield while in the minor leagues. He then would become a super utility player for the Yankees. Yet still be able to man the plate for the Yankees. Then looking toward the future he would allow a slow steady transition of Montero as the full time catcher. Yet his signing would not require the loss of a draft pick. Very good option for the Yankees and gives them incredible flexibility on their bench.
Scott Downs has been in the top five left-handed reliever for the past four years. Has shown the ability to get both left-handed and right-handed hitters out. He is a proven reliever in the American League East. Would finally solidify the need for a left-handed specialist and just might be the bridge to Rivera.
Kerry Woods proved last year, he still has a lot of gas in this tank. Yes he wants to close but he also wants to win a championship. The burning question is will he accept a bridge role with the Yankees. If he does this just might make Joba Chamberlain a trade target, maybe even involved with a trade with the Royals.
So can you imagine a rotation of:
CC
Lee
Hughes
Pettitte / Greinke
What about this line up for the 2011 season:
Crawford
Jeter
Cano
A-Rod
Tex
Swisher
Posada
Montero / Martin
Granderson
A bullpen of:
Nova / Sergio Mitre
Logan
Downs
Wood
Joba
Mo
Incentives?
Brian Cashman and Derek Jeter, have you ever heard of the word "incentives"? We all are aware that Derek Jeter is getting older and may have lost a step. But no doubt about it the Yankees are a better team with him than without him. Is he on the decline or more in line with the stats from the year of the pitcher. My guess is a combination of the two.
So what is a fair offer to the iconic figure who is the Yankees' captain? Sure I believe that Jeter received a fair offer at $15 million a year, but for three years? Come on Brian it should have been at least for four and most likely five. I am sure that this should be a base line for Derek's services. But, if he is able to return to the high standard he has consistently shown, then what?
Incentives will and should be the key. Maybe even paid at the end of the contact if necessary. Such things as batting average, on base percentage, stolen bases, defensive metrics, etc., and not to mention the overall success of the team. Any or all of these factors should be a bench mark or trigger for Jeter to receive more money. This should and could satisfy all concerned. I believe easily worked out by both parties.
Tell me guys is all this media posturing productive to the team know as the Yankees. What message is this sending to any potential free agent signing? Then again what message is being sent to your current young stars or future stars? Believe me nothing good, that is for sure!
Now, Brian and Derek can you both do what is in the teams best interest? Or has this become nothing more then a personal vindictive scheme between you two. That has and is being orchestrated in the media.
Brian, time to put up or shut up. Now Derek, are you as good as you think you are? If so prove it.
Carl Crawford and Cliff Lee
Plain and simple, the Yankees need a # 1 or # 2 hitter, who can get on base and steal. (Many believe, Brett Gardner is not ready to assume this role.) Crawford fits the bill for the next five years. Being under 30 makes him an outstanding choice. What an up grade defensively. By moving Brett Gardner to center and Curtis Granderson to right. Not many fly balls will hit the ground with those three patrolling the outfield. The only true problem is that you will be adding another left handed hitter in this line-up. His contract should come in under a 21 million average for six years.
Now what to do with fan favorite, Nick Swisher. He is the perfect 4th outfielder, back-up first basement and back up designated hitter. This would allow him to start between 115 to 130 games for the Yankees. Keeps his bat in the line-up and will hopefully reduce those nagging injuries, he seems to be prone too. With him being rotated in these different positions, should improve the overall defense for this team. Plus what a back-up plan if an injury occurs to your DH, one of your outfielders and first basemen. Always that possibility that Nick will end up on the trade block, for a good starting pitcher.
Cliff Lee is by far the best option for a front end of the rotation starter. The question is what would it take to get him? I believe the Yankees are willing to go as many as six years. To most it looks like it will come in around an average of 20 to 23 million a year. He has a history of a back problems that maybe the downfall. If not Cliff then only solution is a blockbuster trade to shore up the front end of this rotation or a high risk candidate, such as Brandon Webb or Ben Sheets.
What are your thoughts?
Yankee's Christmas Wish List
Well here we are, sitting at home during the World Series. Who do we root for? We Yankee fans tend to be polarized about our team. So we move on to the winter, looking at possible Free Agents or Hot Stove Trades. So here goes my Yankee Christmas Wish List:
1. Who else but Cliff Lee tops the list, Yankees were willing to part with their number one prospect to get him via mid season trade.
2. Carl Crawford has long been a desired commodity of this team. Got more valuable with his ability to hit third in the line up.
3. Zack Greinke one year remove from a Cy Young season. Has the stuff to make any Yankee forget our starters at the end of the year. Seems to want to play for a winner and the Yankees are always winners.
4. Jayson Werth proven hitter with power, who has flashed a solid glove.
5. Bronson Arroyo solid starter for several years. Proved this year that with a solid team behind him, he is a great front end of the rotation pitcher.
6. Scott Downs another solid year from maybe the best left handed reliever in baseball.
7. Kerry Wood proved he still has a lot left in his tank. Best eight inning reliever since Joba Chamberlien's fall from grace a few years ago.
8. Brandon Webb solid front line starter coming off an injury prone season. A know commodity with awards to prove it.
9.Rafael Soriano would destroy the Tampa Bay Ray's bull pen. Maybe came into his own as the best closer in baseball. At age of 27 could be future closer when Mariano River calls it quits.
10. Lance Berkman a switch hitter who proved that he can hit and is an above average defender. Can they retain him at deal that makes sense for a few years?
The post season is always full of dreams and hope spring eternally. As I am sure you are aware all of these candidates will not be in Pinstripes next year. They all are dependent upon signings or trades that take place.
But we can dream.........................
