Day baseball while we are all working (yeah, right) strikes again. Tampa makes its debut in the post season today against the Sox of the White variety. Here are the lineups - no Swisher again, fark you, Ozzie.

White Sox

Cabrera - SS
Wise -LF
Dye - RF
Thome - DH
Konerko - 1B
Griffey, Jr - CF
Ramirez - 2B
AssJack - C
Uribe - 3B

Vazquez - SP

Rays

Iwamura - 2B
Upton - CF
Pena - 1B
Longoria - 3B
Crawford - LF
Floyd - DH
Navarro - C
Gross - RF

Shields - SP

It is 1-0 Rays going into the 3rd inning on a HR by the Longoria guy from the TV show about lonely MILFs (or something like that).

A Foulke-ing Awful Day at the Ballpark

OK, so I know the 'he Foulked it up' gag is a hackneyed cliche, so sue me.

I went to Thursday's little matinee with the miehanA fo slegnA selegnA soL, hoping beyond hope for a sweep. Alas, things were not to be as we hoped.

Josh Outman was the starting pitcher. Here he is warming up in the bullpen from my perch in the LF bleachers.

Aaron Cunningham started in LF. Here he his showing his best side.

Outman has good stuff, but certainly needs to improve his command if he wants to stay in the majors next season. Here's a suggestion - try not walking guys hitting .177 like <strike>Scrappy Doo</strike> Reggie Willits. He did start off the game with a strike, at least.

After the slegnA scored a run in the first, Rajai Davis led off with a single. He then stole 2B after getting picked off - speed can cancel out bad base-running in some cases. Unfortunately, he then got caught too far off 2B when Saunders snared Cunningham's come-backer. Here's Rajai leading off just before being thrown out. Rajai, if you want to earn a place on this team, you need to rely on actually being good at running the bases, not just being fast.

I would have paid at least one dollar more if the scoreboard actually looked like this.

Jeff Baisley got his first major league hit in this game. Here he is at 1B right after the hit. Unfortunately, this is where he was when the inning ended.

In the bottom of the 4th, the scoreboard operator had a little trouble after Pennington's bases-loaded grounder to third resulted in a 5(unassisted)/5-2 DP. E-fail had the most anemic slide I've ever seen. The scoreboard was prescient, however - Hannahan struck out looking (on a fastball down the middle).

Outman had to come out in the 5th inning. Because the A's were already behind 0-1, Geren turned to the unholy trinity of Casilla, Embree, and Foulke. Casilla allowed Outman's two runners in the 5th to score. The second run was especially galling - Quinlan took off from 1B while Casilla was still in the stretch. Apparently, the A's don't teach their AAA players how to execute a run-down play, because not only did they not get Quinlan out (he went back to 1B when it was uncovered), but they allowed Hunter score in the process.

Embree came in to pitch the sixth. Aside from two walks (one intentional), he did all right.

Then came the Foulke-ing 7th. Foulke gave up a HR to Morales. Two pitches later, he gave up another to Napoli. Here are Davis and Denorfia watching it go.

On the next pitch, Brandon Wood (0.194/0.216/0.318, OPS+ 39!) launched a moon-shot into the LF bleachers about one section to my right.

I sure hope this is the last time I see Foulke walking off the field in an A's uniform.

At this point, I decided to kick back and relax, because I was not a happy camper.

Then the bottom of the 9th rolled around. Before the inning started, Hunter tried to throw to warm-up ball to the fans in the left-center bleachers. Instead, he clanged it off the facing of the stands - FAIL!. That pretty much set the tone for the 9th. He caught some grief for this, and actually had some fun with the fans up there.

Scioscia decided to go with <strike>Bootcheck</strike> Bulger to finish up. He sucked. Here he is about to come out after a HPB and a walk.

Jose Arredondo gave up a walk and an infield single to break up the shutout. After striking out Buck, SpartaCust pinch hit for Davis, so in came K-Fraud.

K-Fraud walked Cust to force in a run. Yes, it was inside, you farking douchebag.

After getting Cunningham to ground into a force play, K-Fraud faced Zooks, who singled in the last A's run right after this shot was taken.

Swooney came in to pinch hit for DFA, but made the last out.

That's right, folks. Instead of enduring the agony of another butt-kicking at the hands of the Rangers, last Friday night, Mrs doctorK and I went to see the Doobie Brothers at the Mountain Winery in Saratoga. I had never been to a concert at this place, and was pleasantly surprised by the venue.

This would've been a nice shot except for our typical south bay haze augmented by our beautiful California wildfire smoke. After finding our $70 seats, and paying $15 to park and $29 for "dinner", we got a good look at the concert venue.

I loved the audience for this concert - they made me feel young. There was, however, an over-abundance of victims of too many plastic surgeries. In fact, I've never been around so many expensive faces (note the dreadful creature in gold in this shot, possibly NSFE (eyes)).

The Doobie Brothers are something of a family affair - opening for the concert was Patrick Simmons, Jr., who played a 20-minute set, mainly of covers, but one song of his own. On his closing number, he was accompanied by his dad.

The house filled up by the time the Doobs took the stage. Below is a (really crummy) video of their second-to-last encore number, Without You.

The closing number was Listen to the Music, and, in keeping with the family nature, Tom Johnston's and Patrick Simmons' kids took the stage with the band. Here they are, taking a final bow.

Dump away, but don't bogart my bandwidth, dude.

Back in May, I posted this diary about an upcoming visit to Denver which would include my first visit to your beautiful ballpark. I thought that I'd share my experiences with you PR'ers, along with some pictures. BTW, my wife (aka Mrs doctorK) and I went to that tense pitchers' duel on July 4. I posted another version of this diary on AN - you can read it here if you like. The AN version only stayed on the front page for about 15 hours today before it got consigned to the archives due to a bunch of incoherent rage and nonsensical angst over the Rich Harden trade.

Before we get started, here's a little quote from Silverblood from my first diary.

If they (by some miracle) win, we’re imprisoning you there.

Well, they did win, and it did require a miracle, but unfortunately, I got away.

Getting to Coors Field

Mrs doctorK and I came to Denver on Amtrak's California Zephyr. The trip through the Rockies was just beautiful. Here's a few pictures from the rails (BTW, you can see the whole schmeer here).

At the station in Glenwood Springs

In Glenwood Canyon

Near Dotsero, while waiting for another train to come through

The high country just before entering Gore Canyon (I think).

If any of you want to travel to Winter Park, Glenwood Springs, or points west, the Zephyr is the way to go.

LoDo

I am not normally a fan of cities (for example, my favorite view of San Francisco is in my rearview mirror), but I was very impressed with the area around Coors Field. The day before the game, I took a little walking tour of the LoDo area.

Nice use of an old trestle by turning it into a foot-bridge.

I wish I brought my swimsuit.

Union Station.

The free shuttle buses on the 16th Street Mall were most appreciated. However, I believe your transit authority may have borrowed the idea for the name of the light rail system from the Honolulu bus system.

The Ballpark

We entered through the gate behind home plate. Here was my first view of the field.

via farm4.static.flickr.com

Our seats were in the front row of section 206. When we got there, the Marlins were taking batting practice. Here is Kevin Gregg, who had blown a save the previous night (more on this later).

via farm4.static.flickr.com

While Mrs doctorK hid from the heat, I took a hike up to the upper deck for the Purple Row. Thanks go out to a couple of nice ladies who were willing to take my picture.

via farm4.static.flickr.com

Overall, the ballpark is fantastic. I didn't see a lot of amusement park-like stuff, but that's just fine with me since I go to baseball parks to see, uh, baseball games.

The Fans

My impression of Rockies fans is that they were well into the game, even when it was 13-4 Marlins in the fourth inning. A few observations.

Don't do the wave - ever.

There was one bonehead sitting down the LF line who decided to grab Willingham's 2nd-inning double while still in play. The umpires sensibly allowed the runner at first to score. The fan in question was immediately booted (clown - he missed one heck of a game).

Rockies fans sing along with just about everything. I especially got a kick out of how they kept singing "Livin' on a Prayer" in the 9th inning even after the sound had been faded out.

Nobody hassled me for wearing an A's shirt. Had it been October instead of July, I imagine the treatment would've been somewhat less friendly. Then again, I'm smart enough to not wear anything with Oakland on it in Denver during the NFL season.

The Game

July 4th just happens to be my birthday, and there is no better way to celebrate getting old by watching our national pastime, followed by a fireworks show. Here was the night's starting victim coming in from the bullpen before the game.

via farm4.static.flickr.com

If your front office had any sense, that would've been Tim Lincecum.

Hanley Ramirez started the game off with bang by drilling Reynolds' first pitch to straight away CF for a big fly. Here is Brad Hawpe fielding the first of 13 doubles in this game.

via farm4.static.flickr.com

Cedrick Bowers came in with one out in the second for his second major league appearance.

via farm4.static.flickr.com

and then he left after giving up 5 runs and getting 6 outs.

via farm4.static.flickr.com

Thankfully for the home team, the Marlins pitching was just as awful. Starter Scott Olsen yielded 9 runs in 5 innings, but was still in line for the "win" until the 9th. This leads me to the head-scratching part of the game - like why Fredi Gonzalez sent Olsen out to lead off the 6th inning. After making a weak out, Gonzalez sent out another pitcher for the bottom of the 6th. What?

The only dumb move by a member of the Rockies was Tulowitzki putting himself on the DL by shattering a bat after having been pulled in a double-switch.

After Matt Holliday blasted a slam in the bottom of the 7th, I was virtually certain the Rockies would win, even though they were still trailing into the bottom of the 9th. Three consecutive singles off of former Los Angeles Angel of Anaheim (and therefore a player I detest by association) Kevin Gregg tied the score, eliminating the lunacy of awarding a "win" to a pitcher who threw 5 bad innings of baseball. With runners at 1st and 2nd with no outs, Jeff Baker hit what should've been a double-play grounder.

via farm4.static.flickr.com

Hanley Ramirez dropped the throw from Amezaga, however, so the bases were loaded for Chris Iannetta. Iannetta then sneaked a ground ball through the drawn-in infield for the game winner (note: had the Marlins turned a DP on the previous play, Iannetta's game-winner would probably have been out #3, and off the extra innings we go).

via farm4.static.flickr.com

Final score - Rox 18, Marlins 17. Somehow, this line looks more appropriate.

via farm4.static.flickr.com

After the game

The fireworks were great (I already posted this FanShot). Mrs doctorK and I walked back to our hotel, as there were relatively few 16th Street Mall shuttles running after 11:00 pm.

My first visit to Coors Field was a rousing success. I hope to make another visit some time in the future.

My Coors Field (Rail)Road Trip

Last winter, Mrs doctorK informed me of her desire to attend a meeting of a bunch of really smart people in Denver during the week of the 4th of July. I quickly checked to see if the Rockies had a homestand during that time (I've got my priorities straight, after all), and happily they did, so I agreed to go along. I absolutely detest flying, so I thought we would go there on the California Zephyr, and fly home. I had taken that train a few times while in grad school, when I was able to handle a two-day train ride in coach. Now that I'm no longer in my twenties, and am merely poor instead of destitute, we sprang for a roomette in the sleeper car ($185 for the two of us - an absolute bargain). Here's how our little journey to Denver went.

To skip my narrative, go here for a slide show of the trip.

First, to get into the mood, here's a little train music.

Getting There

To avoid making my mother (in town to watch little Miss specialK) drive us to Emeryville at 6:00 am on a Sunday, we decided to take the afternoon Capitol Corridor train from Santa Clara and spend the night in Emeryville. On the way, we saw a happy sight.

via farm4.static.flickr.com

Alas, the Gnats were 1-0 winners that night.

The next morning, we got on the Zephyr without any TSA hassles. From Emeryville, we went to Martinez, then on up to Davis and Sacramento. At Martinez, we had to cross the Benicia bridge.

via farm4.static.flickr.com

While crossing the bridge, to distract myself from the possibility of dying a horrific death via an 8.0 earthquake, I tried taking pictures of this truly ugly ship without getting shots of the bridge supports. For the most part, I failed.

Somewhere between Benicia and Davis, a bird decided to improve the view out our window by taking a dump on it. We only had to stare at this avian reminder for the next 34 hours or so.

This guy in the foreground was trying to keep up a conversation with a buddy of his in Las Vegas. Unfortunately, the Union Pacific line starts to feature a load of tunnels past Auburn, so he kept losing the connection (tough - you're supposed to be enjoying the view, not yapping on the phone).

The train continued through Colfax, where we caused a traffic jam.

The Venue

After hanging around Denver for a few days, I finally got around to what I really wanted to see - baseball!

via farm4.static.flickr.com

Our seats were in section 206, in the front row. This put us right over the out-of-town scoreboard, and featured a great view of the field. Up in the third deck there is a row of seats colored purple. The Purple Row, which is where our sister SBN site gets its name, marks the one-mile altitude line. I was advised to get there early so I could hike up to the third deck and get a picture taken there before all the fans showed up (note - if global warming melts the polar ice caps, then the Rockies will need to move the purple seats up a row or two).

via farm4.static.flickr.com

A couple of things to note.

My legs need more sunlight, or to be totally hidden from view.

It was really hot in Denver that afternoon.

Coors Field has a very nicely done bullpen. Note the tribute to Daryl Kile on the wall.

via farm4.static.flickr.com

Overall, Coors Field is an excellent place to watch baseball, with a good variety of food, drink, and, most importantly, good views of the field.

Here is my dinner. Great Dog Almighty!

During the game, fan contests are done live. This one was right below us.

via farm4.static.flickr.com

Instead of Dot Racing, the Rockies do Harley Racing

via farm4.static.flickr.com

Unfortunately, the fans liked to do the wave. For the most part, however, they seemed to really be into the action on the field, even when their team was down by 9 runs in the 4th inning. Also, nobody hassled me for wearing an A's shirt (I imagine the reception I would get during football season would be a little different, however). There was also one bonehead sitting down the LF line who decided to grab a live ball, resulting in a ground-rule double (the umpires did allow a runner to score from 1B due to the fan interference), and the moron's ejection from the game.

The main scoreboard was also useful in showing me the important news of the night.

There were, however, a few technical glitches, such as displaying the wrong face during an at bat by Jorge Cantu.

This guy, I swear, is so gritty that he could probably chew through five maple bats simultaneously without splintering a single one.

via farm4.static.flickr.com

The game

Oh yes, I forgot to mention that along with George Steinbrenner and Al Davis, I was born on July 4, so happy birthday to me. I just love baseball and fireworks, so the Marlins and Rockies decided to give me a lot of both. Because I am not a fan of either of these two teams, I could just settle back and enjoy the action. Hanley Ramirez did not wait long to get things going - he smoked the first pitch of the game about 450 feet to straight-away CF. Here we are with two outs in the top of the first, when it was already 5-0 Marlins.

via farm4.static.flickr.com

Thankfully for the home nine, the Marlins pitching was just as execrable. Here, the fountains are going off after the first of Matt Holliday's home runs.

Brad Hawpe fields one of 13 doubles hit in this game.

Luis Vizcaino was the third pitcher of the game for the Rockies. Unfortunately, he still is as bad as he was with the A's.

The oval on this picture shows about where Chris Iannetta's 5th inning home run landed, on the concourse behind the LF bleachers.

Marlins starter Scott Olsen was really quite terrible, yielding 9 runs in five innings. For some reason, manager Fredi Gonzalez had Olsen hit leading off the 6th (I suppose it must be some NL thing to let a pitcher that YOU ARE ABOUT TO PULL FROM THE GAME to hit for himself). In the top of the seventh, with no outs, runners at 1st and 2nd, and two runs already in, Gonzalez also decided to have Matt Treanor bunt. The Marlins ended up scoring two more runs on a double (what else) by Luis Gonzalez, but considering that Treanor had already hit a bomb, and hits were about as rare as sand on the beach in this game, I kind of wonder what might've happened had Treanor been allowed to hit away. As for the Rockies, the only questionable move of the night was pulled by Troy Tulowitzki, who smashed a maple bat after being pulled in a double-switch. The bat shattered (of course) and gave him a laceration on the hand, landing him on the DL.

Here is Ryan Spilborghs after his second HR of the game.

Here is Garrett Atkins after his 6th inning big fly, which brought the Rockies to within a run at 13-12.

via farm4.static.flickr.com

The Marlins and Rockies exchanged four-spots in the seventh (the Rockies' runs came on slam by Matt Holliday), and after a scoreless 8th for both teams (the only time this happened all night), the Rockies came up in the bottom of the ninth, trailing 17-16. Three straight singles off of Kevin Gregg (a former Toluca Lake Rodent of Orange County) tied the score. Jeff Baker then hit what should've been a double-play ball, but Hanley Ramirez dropped the throw at 2B, loading the bases with no outs. Here we see Baker's ground ball, visible just to the left of the mound.

Instead of two outs, runner at third, the bases were now loaded with no outs. Iannetta's seeing-eye ground-ball single then scored Holliday with the winner (this ball probably would've been fielded had the infield not been playing in).

Final score: Rockies 18, Marlins 17. There were 43 hits and 11 walks in this game, so the pitchers' combined WHIP for the game was 3.177(!). Given the score, forgive me if I thought this line to be more appropriate.

The Fireworks

It took nearly 40 minutes to get all the fans in the bleachers and the Rockpile (the upper-level bleachers above CF) down onto the field so they could see the action. Here's a video (crummy camera-phone quality) of the last 6 and a half minutes of the show. This was the first fireworks show I've seen to feature the end of Beethoven's 9th for the finale.

The Really Smart People Meeting

For the most part:

Oh yeah, we flew home. The less said the better.

Jami and Kaige Kennedy meet with Frank Thomas before the A's-Red Sox game last Saturday. Apparently, Jami is close to delivering Joe's second child. I thought you Rockies fans would like to see this.

Hi there, Purple Row. This is doctorK from Athletics Nation. My wife and I are making a week-long visit to Denver the first week of July, and, seeing as the Rockies are hosting a couple of series that week, and me being a big baseball fan (as well as a fan of run-on sentences), I figured that I'd just have to pay a visit to your place and catch a little NL baseball. The way our schedule works out, we will probably go to either of the July 3 or July 4 games against the Marlins. I have a few questions for you about your ballpark.

Recommended seat locations (edit: due to my choice of games, I went straight to Stub Hub and got two seats in section 206).

Are there any must-see attractions at the ballpark (other than the game)?

Where is the best food at the park?

Anything else I should know about?

By the way, we live in Sunnyvale, less than a half mile from Fremont High School, which of course is where Troy Tulowitzki is from. Thanks for your help, and hope to see some of you at the game.

And thanks to Silverblood for correcting my errors in the initial version of this post. :)
