Overconfidence vs Market Efficiency in the NFL draft
I was just over at http://www.mockingthedraft.com/ and saw this posted on their site. If you're a nerd like me and enjoy analyzing the draft (and have way too much time on your hands), you'll like reading this 56 page analysis. Its good to get some "professional" and more stat based opinions on the matter instead of hearing idiots like Boomer and Steve Young debate. Enjoy kiddies

*dolfanstanley's mock draft*
Rams – Sam Bradford
Lions – Ndamukong Suh
Bucs – Gerald McCoy
Redskins – Russell Okung
Chiefs – Eric Berry
Seahawks – Trent Williams
Browns – CJ Spiller - toughest pick for me here, but I really don't see anyone else who can have the impact spiller would. If this pick is wrong my draft will probably be very off
Raiders – Jason Pierre-Paul - Al Davis logic here
Bills – Jimmy Clausen - Had a tough time putting Clausen somewhere. I think its either him or Buluga to the Bills
Jaguars – Earl Thomas
Broncos – Rolando McClain
Dolphins – Derrick Morgan - As a Dolphins fan I hope they are able to trade down. Otherwise, I hope earl thomas falls to them. 3rd choice: an OLB for the 3-4. Right now we have Cameron Wake and Charlie Anderson as our OLB's, so even though Dan Williams should be available I think they'd take an OLB
49ers - Bryan Buluga
Seahawks – Brandon Graham
Giants – Dan Williams
Titans – Joe Haden
49ers – Kyle Wilson
Steelers – Maurkice Pouncey
Falcons – Mike Iupati
Texans – Kareem Jackson
Bengals – Jermaine Gresham
Patriots – Dez Bryant - I feel like this is super low for his talent, but in my mock he fell this far..
Packers – Anthony Davis - their o-line was horrible
Eagles – Charles Brown
Ravens – Demaryius Thomas
Cardinals – Sergio Kindle
Cowboys - Rodger Saffold
Chargers – Ryan Matthews - Just like every other mocker....
Jets – Jerry Hughes - Seems like a good fit for Rex Ryan
Vikings – Devin McCourty
Colts – Jared Odrick
Saints – Daryl Washington
Dolphins rename stadium
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4150274
The Dolphins have sold the name of their stadium, which will now be called Landshark Stadium (which i guess is a type of beer). Maybe as part of the deal we could get discounted beer? Apparently the deal is done with singer Jimmy Buffet, a friend of Stephen Ross. I wonder what all you dolfans will think of this one h m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m

Poll on ESPN.com
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/index
There's a poll at the bottom right of the page asking who the coach of the year is. Choices are Bill Belicheat, Tom Coughlin, Harbaugh, Mike Smith, and Tony Sparano. I wonder who I want you to vote for...

Jake Long getting some love from Scounts Inc
Check out this article from ESPN: http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3715338
One of the questions asked the scouts which rookie (other than a QB) would they build a franchise around. Jake Long showed up in a few of the guys' answers:
Green: Two spots stand above the rest in terms of team-building: quarterback and left tackle. Take the quarterback out of the equation, and I'm most impressed by Miami's Jake Long and Denver's Ryan Clady. I had some doubts about Long's ability to play on the left side, but he has held up well. Long is a player in the mold of former Broncos LT Gary Zimmerman, with the athletic ability to handle speed rushers and the size and strength to be a road grader in the run game. A big part of the Dolphins' success has been the team's efficiency on offense, and Long has played a major role in stabilizing that unit. I'd start my franchise with him.
Kidd: Without a doubt, the NFL's best teams are built from the inside out. That's why I'd take Long, who has stabilized Miami's offensive line and given the team a premier talent at the line's most critical position for years to come. He's smart, tough, competitive and skilled. Nobody expected the Dolphins to be in the hunt this late in the season, and some of the credit for that goes to offensive line coach Mike Maser and his work in Long's development.
Williamson: Compared to other positions, running backs are somewhat interchangeable. Put them in optimal surroundings, and drafting a productive ball carrier just isn't all that difficult. But left tackles don't grow on trees, so if I'm picking from this year's crop of rookies, I take either Long or Clady. Both would be excellent selections, but I think Clady has been slightly more impressive overall. He has outstanding athletic ability and a bit more upside.
Other's receiving votes were Chris Johnson and Ryan Clady. 2 and 1/2 out of six scouts doesn't sound bad to me.
John Clayton gives the Fins the best grade in AFC East
Fins getting no respect from Chargers
Atleast their fans... I just took a look at their sb nation site and read some interesting things. First, they seem to think we beat the patriots through our catching them off gaurd with our "gimmick" play. Do they forget that we only ran this play something like six times and that we drove on their D with our regular offense too?
Also here's a quote from someone on their site: " I had at least a little fear against every team we’ve faced this year. I have none against Miami." Ouch
And to add to that, the fans on their site predict them winning by an average of 20.3 pts. If only the Dolphins could read this for motivation!
Maybe Dolphins CBs aren't that bad
Here's another article from espn.com (http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/insider/columns/story?columnist=joyner_kc&id=3425488), this time by KC "The Football Scientist" Joyner. In the article, Joyner uses his statistics to find the best CB tandems in the league using Yards Per Attempt (YPA) on the two CBs who started 8 or more games. Suprisingly, the Fins' Will Allen and Michael Lehan are tied for fourth! That is far above Dre Bly/Champ Bailey and many other great CB duos.
I know some of you may be thinking, "Well the Dolphins run defense was so bad that opposing teams didn't have to throw much." But this is yards per attempt, not total yards. If anything, this stat is more impressive because you would have to assume the CBs didn't have as much safety help as the safeties had to help out more on the run.
Too bad Lehan just got hurt... Let's hope it's not too serious.
Dolphins RBs: Destined Duds...
Atleast according to ESPN.com's Jeremy Green. In this article (http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/insider/columns/story?columnist=green_jeremy&id=3422857), Green describes which RB duos he likes and which he doesn't. Apparently, he's not too impressed with the Ronnie and Ricky:
Miami's Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams
It is hard to grasp why the Miami Dolphins showed no interest in rookie RB Darren McFadden, who clearly was the best player in the 2008 NFL draft. On paper it appears the Dolphins have a RB duo, but the reality is there isn't a stable force as the lead back on this team. Brown is coming off an ACL injury, and Williams is aloof and can't be trusted. Miami wants to have a physical, grind-it-out run offense, but it's hard to count on Brown and Williams to do that. The Dolphins are hoping one back comes through. Two would be a bonus.
What do you guys think?
Jason Taylor Sunday Conversation
Just noticed this is the video section of espn.com's NFL site.
Here's the link and the video is on the right:
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/index
Taylor says a lot of what we already know (he hasn't talked to parcells, he wants to act after football but he still wants to play football, etc) but one interesting thing I heard was this. When asked what he would most like to be known for 10 years from now (out of football, dancing, or acting), taylor said acting and seemed pretty sure about it. Hmmm....
