ESPN's NBA Hollinger Playoff Odds 2008-09

John Hollinger's playoff projections now give our beloved Blazers a 100% chance of making the playoffs, a 79.7% likelihood of winning the Northwest Division, an 18.2% possibility of snagging the #1 seed, a 25.4% chance to win the Western Conference and an 8.7% probability of winning it all.

Hollinger bases his projections on his power rankings which currently has our guys ranked 4th and are based upon various factors such as scoring margin and strength of schedule. He then plays out the season 5,000 times. If the Blazers made the playoffs 2,500 times, then they are projected to make the playoffs 50% of the time.

Apparently, his computer mumbo jumbo is very impressed with our Baby Blazers as they now make the playoffs 4,998 times out of 5,000 and are projected to win 57 games (I got a buddy who made a $100 bet with another buddy before the season that they would win 55 games, so he has gotta be stoked right now after a shaky beginning).

Will the numbers hold up? Who knows since the computers don't know about any potential injury or trade (or do they?), but it is nice for Hollinger's computers to verify what we have been seeing with our own eyes--that the Trail Blazers are already near the cream of the crop in the NBA, simply amazing for the 2nd youngest team. The future is bright and we certainly have a reason to be optimistic. We may be homers, but the computers (that may some day rise up and make us their slaves) are agreeing with us.

GregZilla invaded New York City and the historic Madison Square Garden, helping the Portland Trail Blazers come away with another big road win to start the road trip off right at 2 wins versus no losses. Joel Przybilla was a force in the paint, especially in the fourth quarter getting big blocks, misdirecting shots at the rim and adding a little offense. Przybilla scored 8 points and pulled down 14 big boards as GregZilla finished with 10 points, 21 rebounds and 4 blocks.

This 2-headed monster helped wear down both David Lee and Al Harrington who both played 40 minutes. Our shot-blocking beast had a monstrous block of Lee in the 4th quarter that sucked the life force right out of the Knickerbockers, especially sine the Knicks starters are forced to log huge minutes.

Next up, GregZilla will head to our nation's capital to battle the Wizards who have struggled to a 3-12 record thus far, but coming off a 20-point win against the New Jersey Nets. Our big beast will try to keep the good guys undefeated against the Eastern Conference and put our road record over .500 for the first time all season. 7-footer JaVale McGee will probably be called on to help contain our monster, but weighing in at just 234 pounds, he will likely have his hands more than full in the paint.

11/30/08 @ Detroit Pistons
Good guys 96, Bad Boys 85

Trail Blazers 12 wins against 6 losses, in sole possession of 1st place in the Northwest Division

Nice road win for the Blazers and a big performance by GregZilla, especially Greg Oden who recorded his team-leading 5th double double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. GregZilla put up 14 points, 15 boards and 5 blocks while hitting some clutch free throws in the 4th quarter, finishing 6 of 8 from the charity stripe (not bad for a 7-foot, 2-headed monster).

GregZilla, with some great help from LaMarcus Aldridge, helped contain former Jail Blazer Rasheed Wallace to 11 points and merely 1 rebound. Noticeably, Wallace was riding the pine late in the 4th quarter when the Pistons still had a long-shot chance to come back.

This game featured a big man match up of former #1 overall picks as Oden faced Kwame Brown, a past top pick of general manager Michael Jordan. Brown was outplayed by G.O., finishing with 6 points and 2 rebounds.

The Pistons came into the game riding a 2 game win streak and ranked 2nd in the Central Division, 10th in the Sports Illustrated Power Rankings, as well as 10th in ESPN's Hollinger Power Rankings.

Our Portland Trail Blazers are currently in sole possession of 1st place in the Northwest Division. The Blazers came into the game tied ranked 8th in the SI Power Rankings and 4th in the Hollinger Power Rankings.

Next up, our shot-blocking, dunking monster will be roaming the hallowed court at Madison Square Garden, planning to take a big bite out of the Big Apple.

If you are on Facebook, check out the GregZilla group page. It is kept up to date with the latest stats and news.

Portland Trail Blazers’ centers Greg Oden and Joel Przybilla combine to form a powerful and formidable center combo. Size and game-changing defensive prowess pose big problems for any NBA team, especially at the friendly confines of the raucous Rose Garden, also known as The Garden of Oden.

GregZilla has averaged 14.8 points, 15.5 rebounds, 3 blocks and 1.3 assists per game this season.
Next Game @ Detroit Pistons
11/30/08

The Blazers travel to Motor City to take on the 10-5 Detroit Pistons. The Pistons are an experienced team that will likely give the good guys all that they can handle.

GregZilla will have its hands full with athletic big man, Rasheed Wallace, who loves to play well against his former team. Rasheed is putting up 13.4 points and 9.2 boards and he is one big who likes to shoot the trey as he has attempted 66 shots beyond the arc, leading the Pistons in that effort and making 39% of those attempts.

GregZilla will also have to help out against The Answer, Allen Iverson, Rip Hamilton and Tayshaun Prince. The Pistons have started running the offense through Prince, allowing Iverson to play off of the ball. It will be interesting to see how the Blazers play D against either player when they bring the ball up the court. Coach Nate McMillan liked to bring up Lamarcus Alderidge or Nicolas Batum and pressure both Derrick Rose and Chris Paul when they visited the Rose Garden recently.

The Pistons come into the game riding a 2 game win streak and currently ranked 2nd in their division, 10th in the Sports Illustrated Power Rankings, as well as 10th in ESPN's Hollinger Power Rankings. The Pistons defeated Milwaukee 107-97 in their last game on Friday night.

Our Portland Trail Blazers are currently tied for 1st place with the Utah Jazz in the Northwest Division and are ranked 8th in the SI Power Rankings and 4th in the Hollinger Power Rankings.

11/28/08
Seven up and seven down as the Blazers feasted on the New Orleans Hornets the day after Thanksgiving 101-86, earning the revved up P-town crowd free chalupas once again.

GregZilla recorded 8 points, 14 boards, 4 assists and 2 blocks. While relatively quiet on the offensive end, our hometown monster was a big presence in the paint and provided good defense down low. Oden attracted a lot of attention early, giving Brandon Roy and company plenty of open looks as the Blazers took an early lead. Tyson Chandler got in foul trouble against the two-headed beast, eventually fouling out with 5 points and 6 rebounds, both below his season averages.

GregZilla helped Brandon Roy have an awesomely amazing all-around performance with 25 points, 10 assists and 6 rebounds. Greg Oden especially helped give B-Roy room to roam as he was passing out of double teams as he was attracting a lot of attention when he got the ball down low early in the game. The home team didn't miss a beat when Przybilla roamed the paint either and The Vanilla Gorilla even hit some big free throws when the game was still in question.

Up next, the Trailblazers head to Detroit Sunday for a tough match up against the Eastern Conference contenders. GregZilla will need to be an angry beast to compete eith the Motor City bigs, including former Trail Blazer Rasheed Wallace.

11/26/08
GregZilla had 14 points, 19 rebounds and 5 blocks as the Blazers dominated the Miami Heat 106-68 and improved their record to 10 wins against 6 losses on Thanksgiving Eve. The Garden of Oden has been a tough place for opposing teams as the Trail Blazers remain the only Western Conference team undefeated at home.
