Thoughts on 2B and 3B options in the news Lately
It looks to be that the Twins are playing the waiting game and seeing which upgrade can come at the best value. (Note I didn't say lowest cost cause that is not what the Twins are up to IMO. If that were the case than Crede who is a rumored candidate to return would be signed to a split / minor league contract for next season with a base under 1 million and some incentives.
The blogosphere has voiced their opinion and the most preferred option is Lopez at 2b on a 3 year deal in the 18 to 21 million range or Hudson on a 2 year 16 million contract give or take a few million.
But what can the Twins get that is better than what we currently have a fraction of the 20 million commitment without giving up too much talent?
The blogosphere is probably hoping a Lopez on a 2 year 10 million contract as prices come down......( I'm in this group) but based on what we've read lately The Twins have obvious options. My question to all of you for discussion below is WHICH OPTION WILL THE TWINS PICK AND HOW MUCH WILL IT COST THEM.
2 teams are talking to Cabrera to play 2B and he is open to it since he isn't getting many offers on the open market. I am guessing a 1 year 2-3 million deal to sign him.
No other 2B have been talked about in the media by the Twins and only Gardy has done so.
on the 3B side of things a Kouzmanoff trade has been discussed for Perkins.
Crede has been linked to Twins but won't sign till spring training more than likely.
DeRosa, The Twins have had preliminary contract talks with him. They like his versatility. With so many teams interested in him I don't see this happening but we'll see. He'll probably get a 3 year deal in the 5-7 million per year range.
Beltre is likely out of our price range and if he has to give a playing discount, he will probably do that for a team on the west coast. 3 year 27 million contract is what he'll probably get.
One name that popped up recently for 3B is Miguel Tejada http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/12/twins-looking-to-upgrade-infield-rotation.html He could wind up playing on a 1 year 3-5 million contract if he waits too long.
Also Uribe was listed in the article as well and he would be available inexpensively too, but would he even be an upgrade?
The Twins could probably have both Cabrera and Tejada for just over 1/3 the guarenteed price of Polanco.
Pitching is also being looked for by the Twins and names like Brett Myers, Doug Davis and Jarrod Washburn......
30 Cents on the Dollar = 2B Indifference
The Twins are talking to Cabrera about playing 2b next year and the blogosphere seems to be united against them doing that. Why? If the Twins can sign him to a 1 or 2 year deal in the 3-5 million per season contract, wouldn’t that be cheaper than signing Placido Palanco. I am not advocating that Cabrera is better by any means as he clearly is not. But how much of a down grade is he really. I ask this cause I read on a blog how Cabrera has a .322 OBP for his career and Polanco has a .331 OBP and is so much better suited for the number two spot in the lineup. Well lets take a look at their career lines and last 3 seasons and make comparisons.
