Testudo Times Vernon's Brother

Michael Davis, brother of Vernon and Vontae, charged with murder

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/05/10/michael-davis-brother-of-vernon-and-vontae-charged-with-murder/

This is very sad for Vernon and subsequently Terpnation.. I was wondering since the kid is 19, was he ever a D1 prospect? Obviously when you have 2 brothers that are all americans, 1st rd picks, and pure studs there is something in the bloodline. Was Mike Davis every recruited by us? by anyone? Did he even play football?

Do people that are tapped into the area know the full story behind this?

Testudo Times Hubert Davis to UNC

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2012/basketball/ncaa/05/02/davis.unc.ap/index.html

So Hubert Davis has left ESPN to go back to UNC and coach under Roy. This brings two things to mind

1.. do you think his basketball knowledge will translate well to coaching? He has never coached at any level before. Its not hard to recruit at UNC but im guessing such a public profile on your bench is another asset for them.

2. This leaves an opening at ESPN , what are the chances Gary gets considered after his first year at the Big Ten network? Having him on ESPN so soon would be awesome!

He has signed with a polish team... Interesting risk he is taking with getting injured and having no contract at all..

I hope he does well and learns some new things to compliment his game so he can have a solid career. I will always be salty towards him but the more terps in the league the better.

Testudo Times Gary Williams' new gig

I just saw on twitter (must be true) that Gary will be joining the Big 10 network as an analyst.

Interesting step for Gary but I want to think if he wanted to become part of the media that he could have gotten a better gig, no? My guess would have been ESPN would have been all over the future hall of famer.

Also, I wonder if this effects his role in the Athletic Department.

Testudo Times Grantland's top 50 college bball players ever

 http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/7185970/the-50-greatest-college-basketball-players-all-time

33. Juan Dixon (Maryland, 1998-2002): No matter what happens, I'll always consider Dixon a greater talent than Steve Blake. And I really like Steve Blake; I just can't understand how the things Dixon did at Maryland couldn't translate to the next level. And that makes me like him more.

7. Len Bias (Maryland, 1982-1986): Though the NBA potential of Bias became a little overstated in the wake of his overdose (there were a lot of busts in the ‘86 draft and he might have been one of them), there’s no disagreement over his dominance in the ACC. Everyone who played against him seems to insist he was the best college athlete they ever faced, which is one of the complimentary upsides to dying young.

What do you guys think??

Testudo Times Terps RIPPED by deadspin

so deadspin put together their top 25 for this year and felt the need to include us at the very bottom. Ranked #120.

http://deadspin.com/5836231/introducing-deadspins-college-football-top-25-or-so

we get absolutley shredded

120. Maryland

Megalomaniacal athletic director Kevin Anderson fired coach Ralph Friedgen after an 8-4 season, an ACC coach of the year award, and a blowout bowl victory. That was a fine season by the Terps, and it was as good a season as Maryland—a non-football school in a state that only cares about the NFL— ever deserves. Anderson's power play—dumping the rotund and reasonably successful Fridge in favor of ahistorical martinet Randy Edsall, to turn the Terps into a Serious Football Program—is doomed and embarrassing. Maybe if Edsall knows what he's doing, after he's done taking the names off the jerseys and making the uppity players conform to his grooming code, the Terps will rise all the way to BCS snubbee status, before the coach ditches the school for a real football program and the NCAA swoops in to investigate how Maryland got top talent to go to a school where nobody cares about football, and then (because Maryland is a school where nobody cares about football) the death penalty will come down, and we'll never have to watch this kind of stupid charade again.

Testudo Times top 100 ncaa basketball players

Basketball Prospectus put together this list of the top 100 mens players...

10-1 http://basketballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=1812

our boy terrell made the cut..

63. Terrell Stoglin, Maryland (So., PG)
Stoglin stepped on the court at Maryland and was immediately a very successful combo guard. He had the highest assist rate on the team and shot percentages of 51/36/83 while using 27 percent of the Terps' possessions. Stoglin's not quite the passer Kendall Marshall is, but he's quicker, a better shooter, and a much more dangerous slasher, one who doesn't have Marshall's turnover problems. I understand why he got so much less buzz than Marshall, but I don't know why I heard even teammate Pe'Shon Howard's name more often. For the record, Stoglin's the latest in a series of guards whose potential I utterly failed to recognize in advance.

Other ACC'ers & past targets to make the list...

97. James Michael McAdoo, North Carolina (Fr., PF)
96. Will Barton, Memphis (So., SG)
93. Travis McKie, Wake Forest

89. Reggie Johnson, Miami (Jr., C)

79. Terrence Ross, Washington (So., SF)
77. Mike Scott, Virginia (Sr.,

70. Kendall Marshall, North Carolina (So., PG)

68. Durand Scott, Miami (Jr., SG)

54. Malcolm Grant, Miami (Sr., PG)
51. C.J. Leslie, NC State (So.,

50. Gilvydas Biruta, Rutgers (So., PF

15. Tyler Zeller, North Carolina (Sr., C)

11. John Henson, North Carolina (Jr., C)

8. Austin Rivers, Duke (Fr., SG)

Testudo Times Chad Ford's In/Out

Obviously Jordan Williams is listed as an in...

Jordan Williams*, F/C, So, Maryland
The Maryland big man, coming off a very good sophomore season, will test the draft waters but won't hire an agent. An excellent offensive rebounder and a proven low-post scoring option, Williams has become a force in the paint. However, a lack of explosive athletic ability and perimeter game, along with questions about his conditioning, will likely land him in the second round, should he stay in the draft.

However, i was a little shocked to see that he had Wally Judge as a 50/50 on declaring staying. Has anyone else heard anything on thiss possibility? I never really knew it was even an option that he was considering going pro. I guess this is kind of a good thing that a potential NBA-talent player is considering transferring here to MD if he doesnt go to the NBA.

Testudo Times Si.com's 10 most indespensable players & Seth Davis' stock watch

Jordan made the list....

Jordan Williams, F, Maryland

The slimmed down Williams is similar in standing to Purdue's Johnson, except he doesn't have anyone close to as productive as E'Twaun Moore helping him out, which makes him even more crucial to the Terps. Williams is a very effective scorer given his usage rates, generates a lot of free throw attempts (although struggles from the line) and is an outstanding rebounder at both ends of the floor. With so many teams of comparable quality behind Duke, Williams' presence should be worth a ton in terms of Maryland's eventual ACC finish.

Read more: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/writers/andy_glockner/01/04/irreplaceable-players/index.html#ixzz1A6PT7y2f

And heres Davis' stock report on MD

MARYLAND (9-4, NR): HOLD

Given that the Terps are unranked and unnoticed, it's pretty pointless to rate them a Sell. But I don't see them rising too high, either, especially with road games at Duke and Villanova looming in the next two weeks. There's a lot to like about sophomore forward Jordan Williams, who is fifth in the nation in rebounding (11.8 per game) and ranks third in the ACC in scoring (18.1), but Maryland is getting absolutely nothing out of its guards. When you can't even beat BC at home, you don't have much basis for optimism.

Testudo Times Torrey & the Draft "Gurus"

Torrey got mentioned in both Kiper's Stock Report as well As McShay's Stock Up weekly report..

Need Insider to read the full articles

KIPER

Torrey Smith | WR | Maryland
Speaking of wide receivers, no one performed any better than Maryland's 6-foot, 200-pound junior, Torrey Smith. In the Terps' 38-31 win over NC State, he had 14 catches for 224 yards and 4 touchdowns. As a redshirt freshman, the attention-getter was his 25.9 yard kick return average. He actually set the ACC record for a single season with 1,089 kick return yards overall. Also capable of making a contribution in the passing game, he finished with 24 catches for a 14.0 yard average. Elevated to the role of feature wideout the following year, his reception total increased to 61. His 2,192 all-purpose yards was the second-best mark in ACC history. Along with possessing good size and excellent speed, Smith is also very strong. His 355-pound power clean is the top mark in school history by a wideout and his 550-pound squat is second in school history by a wideout. And he has the receiving skills to match (65 catches for a 16.1 yard average and 12 touchdowns this season). While the likes of A.J. Green, Julio Jones, Jon Baldwin, Michael Floyd, Ryan Broyles and others garner most of the attention in the junior class, Smith has developed into a heck of a football player in his own right.

http://insider.espn.go.com/ncf/insider/columns/story?columnist=mcshay_todd&id=5862369

MCSHAY's STOCK UP

3. Maryland WR Torrey Smith
As far as single-game performances go, it's hard to find many that are better than Smith's versus N.C. State. The 6-foot-1, 200-pounder hauled in 14 passes for 224 yards and four scores in Maryland's 38-31 win over the Wolfpack, and Smith's speed and vertical playmaking skills were on display. The junior has developed as a route-runner and he's showing more focus as a pass-catcher, and NFL scouts are now beginning to peek at Smith's tape in case he elects to leave school after this season.

Testudo Times Seth Davis' Mailbag Q about J-Will

from si... gotta love this....

Do you think Jordan Williams is the best big man in the ACC?
-- @terps96

It depends on how you define "big man." There are a couple of frontline players who I would consider to be better than Williams (Barnes and Kyle Singler come to mind), but if you're looking for an old school, back-to-the-basket scorer, then Williams isn't just the best in the ACC, he is also one of the best in the country. He is a legit 6-10 and carries his 260 pounds much better than he did last season. Williams was splendid in Maryland's squeaker over the College of Charleston Wednesday night, finishing with 26 points and 15 rebounds. He is talented, strong and has a high basketball IQ. I'm not ready to start a man crush on him, but I promise I will sing this guy's praises every chance I get.

Testudo Times Gary Parrish's ACC Preview

http://www.cbssports.com/collegebasketball/story/14231970/acc-preview-duke-unc-on-top-the-way-its-meant-to-be

5. Maryland

Jordan Williams averaged 9.6 points and 8.6 rebounds last season, had 18 points and seven rebounds (in 22 minutes) in Monday's exhibition, and could have a huge sophomore season that could make him a legitimate NBA prospect. But will it be enough to keep the Terps near the top of the ACC? Honestly, probably not. They lost their top three scorers -- Greivis Vasquez, Landon Milbourne and Eric Hayes -- off a roster that tied Duke for the ACC title, and that's difficult to replace. But Maryland will be a little better than most expect (once again) and make the NCAA tournament (once again). NCAA tournament? Yes

Testudo Times Nolan Carroll

Good to see the former terp getting some love from SI.com's unheralded drafted players article...

Nolan Carroll, CB (5th round), Dolphins

Carroll is the epitome of a hidden gem, starting just five games his entire career at Maryland and never scratching his potential. It was mostly because of injury, including breaking his leg in the second game of the 2009 season. But Carroll possesses unreal athletic ability and finally thrived once he got healthy and earned an opportunity.

Carroll ran a 4.3 in his pro day at Maryland, turning heads within the Dolphins' front office. Once he's gotten into uniform, Carroll has only continued to impress, to the point he likely will be the Dolphins' featured kick returner and will press for reps in the secondary.

Testudo Times ESPN CFB Confidential

ESPN does this every year with their player polls. For the ACC the only time Maryland mentioned was not a postiive...

Best Coach?

VaTech's Frank Beamer is the winner, with 33.3%. "His style works every year," says one guard. But No. 2 pick Jim Grobe (16.7%) draws kudos for doing lots (Wake-record 33 wins the past four years) with little (only ACC team with zero ESPNU 150 recruits in that time). "Nobody knows how he does it," says one senior, "but Wake's always pretty good." On the not-good side, players name Maryland's Ralph Friedgen and GaTech's Paul Johnson (20% each) as the last coach you'd ever want to play for.
