"I think they’re going in a different direction," Beltran said. "You have to be a little frustrated for the fans, knowing probably the team isn’t going to be what the fans really want to see out there. But at the end of the day, they have prospects, players who are going to be good one day. But when that day’s going to be, only God knows."

-Carlos Beltran, on the NY Mets

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Cream well:
1 lb butter, softened
1 c sugar
4 tsp vanilla
Gradually add:
3-1/2 c flour
Add until just combined:
1 c crushed potato chips

Drop by tsp on ungreased cookie sheet, and shape/flatten slightly with fingers. Bake 11-13 mins. Cool completely and sprinkle with 10x.

(The recipe linked includes eggs, but I make the one above without them and it's equally delish)

These are addictive!

"We come to bury Caesar not to praise him"

Roy Halladay just quoted Shakespeare in his NLDS Game 1 presser when referring to the St. Louis Cardinals and the quality of their team.

You had me at "hello," Doc.

The seven-foot statue will be near Harry the K’s in the left field area inside Citizens Bank Park. The statue will be unveiled prior to the August 14th game against the Nats.

He debuts midnight Thursday. I've already seen/heard the joke that it's way past the old guy's bedtime. Hahaha. He's only 10 years older than I am.

Here's hoping he doesn't follow his F-I-L's lead of matching tie/highlighter.

PD article that merits some debate. Thoughts, BSH regulars?

A niche sport like hockey certainly has its privileges and the faithful tend to hold their fandom over others like nobody's business. Perhaps there's a nugget of truth in what he's saying?

Q: Who is the specialist you saw? And how many have you seen?
A: If I tell you I have to kill you.

Q: What's the big secret?
A: I don't know. You guys know me by now, right

-Chase Utley, being interviewed about his impending death.

"One line has been hot always," Leino said. "And you try to take that line out and we’ve been hot lately. So they tried to take us out in Chicago and we still had two great lines that can score. Doesn’t matter.

"You can’t really match up against that. Not many teams have the ability to match us. It’s like pitching with the Phillies. They’ve got great pitchers to throw at you every night. People know what are lines are and we got three, great defensive pairs, too."

Ville Leino via Gramps

"The Phillies have partnered with Sony Electronics' System Solutions Group and Daktronics to dramatically enhance the fans' viewing experience at Citizens Bank Park. The $10 million upgrade includes the installation of a massive new video display. When completed, the Phillies HD display will be the largest in the NL and among the largest in the world - measuring 76 feet high and 97 feet wide."

Look at the Phillies going all Jerruh Jones!

Not sure how I feel about this. Phillies now have $164.825 million guaranteed according to David Murphy.

Cute ABC focus story on Danny and Claude's living arrangement. I see a potential odd couple type sitcom in the works.

Does Danny have Claude get the top shelf items for him when he needs them or does he just use a hockey stick to go up and get them?

I kid, I kid.

They ask various Flyers who would make the best Santa. I enjoyed this. The digs to O'Donnell piss me off, probably because we're the same age. LOL.
Also, my vote goes to Hartnell, probably because he seems like an overgrown kid.

Werth, a free agent this offseason, relates the Phillies' sense of inner calm to a different sporting venue: He got a glimpse of it when he went to see the Flyers play the Chicago Blackhawks in the Stanley Cup finals in June.

"I'm sitting there going crazy at this [hockey] game, with this nervousness and anticipation and anxiety and all the emotions that fans go through,'' Werth said. "Then I look at the guys out on the ice and they're calm and collected. They have a job to do no matter how many people are pulling their hair out in the seats. It's hard for fans to really have a sense of that. But it's just different for us as players, because we're out there and we're in control of the situation.''

"We were built around pitching in ’04 and ’05. We have a lot more hitting here, though. We had Lance Berkman, but we didn’t have anything in the middle like we do here. Pitching-wise we had Andy (Pettitte) and Cole reminds me a lot of him, and Halladay is a lot like (Roger) Clemens." - Roy Oswalt

As we all suspected, it looks as though it's about to finally become official.

This is probably a good thing for the players, but with Fehr's history and reputation, I fear another resulting lockout.

I knew Lindros probably wouldn't make it, but I feel it's a bit of a travesty that Shero still hasn't been included.

The Phillies will be in Milwaukee for 1970s weekend, May 14-16, and the teams will wear their old-style uniforms for the May 14 game. The Phillies wore the powder blue uniforms on the road for most of the '70s.

Perhaps I am in the minority, but I'm a big fan of the powder blues. I look forward to seeing Howard in them. LOL.

From the Inky:
A reporter told defenseman Chris Pronger that people in Toronto were calling Carcillo "Public Enemy No. 1."

"Why? What did he do?" Pronger asked.

"The way he taunted the Leafs' bench," the reporter said.

"He answered somebody taunting him," Pronger said, referring to Acton. "So what did he do" that was wrong?

The reporter said he expected Carcillo to hear it from the fans last night.

"He's a big boy; he knows how to handle it," Pronger said.
