Feel Good Story of the day
Guy with cancer goes to the doctor, he's told he's cancer free. Get's home and sees a twitter from a pitcher on his team that the pitcher wants someone to throw with. Dude goes to Coors field, gets in, get's to throw with the guy, do batting practice, and it's all been good from there.
Nice to see.
The wind is blowing in.
A choppy ocean of air
Seagull schooners
They float and bob
making docking runs to the bleachers below.Glee and misery
echo in the ampitheatre
Battle is joinedThe greek tragedy
proceeds apace
A Chorus in the stands
Casting aspersions
As the cast fights the script
As the game is written. At the end
the Chorus has no say
The play completed
One win, one loss
The two sides of the cast
exuent, stage left and right
through the dugouts.Baseball is back.
Go Cubs.

PV willing to consider bullpen role
Boy, did we ever dodge a bullet there.
Tis a tale told by an Umpire, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.
Straight Down the Middle, the Long Way
Yesterday, Justine Siegal walked on Practice Field No. 2 and became what was believed to be the first woman to throw batting practice to a major league team.
Jews and Baseball -- An American Love Story
I'm sure Jessica knows about this already, but it's kind of cool looking.
Lou Piniella to step down after tonights game to take care of his ailing mother. Mike Quade named interim manager.
So the Piniella era ends early. I find this to be sad.

OT: The Next Generation: Iron Pigs Games 1 & 2
Game 1: Yankees 3, Iron Pigs 0
The Westdale Iron Pigs played on Opening Day for the Westale Broncos division. It was sunny, beautiful and warm. Unfortunately, I can't show you any pictures of this game, because my camera decided to format away 150 pictures in the 7th inning. Also unfortunataely, the Pigs lost, 3-0 in a strong pitcher's duel that didn't end until the 8th inning, which is extra innings in this division. The Yankees threatened early with two men on in scoring position the top of the 1st, but couldn't pull the trigger. Neither team had more than one baserunner per inning for the next six innings, including one Iron Pig whose triple was negated by the fact that he'd neglected to step on first. The Yankees scored three on questionable fielding choices in the top of the 8th, and no Pig made sufficient contact in the bottom of the 8th, thus ending the game.
Max played right field, and made two defensive plays. He struck out three times.
Game 2: Iron Pigs 2, Vipers 0
Last year, the Vipers were a force to be reckoned with. However, this year they are in a rebuilding mode. They're actually in a different league, and they're the only team in their age bracket, so every game is against a different league.

Max takes notes from the first base coach before his at bat.
The Pigs ate Viper pitching like a truffle (and that's the last time I'm making THAT comparison), getting several hits. They scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning, and the game was called in the top of the sixth due to darkness.

Max steals second base.
Max played right field all game. He walked twice, stole a base, advanced on a bunt, scored the first Iron Pig run of the season... and made a TOOTBLAN (ran from third base on a pop-up without tagging) to end the fifth inning. He actually had a really good line on a deep drive to right-center, but he just couldn't quite catch up with it.

Max scores the first Iron Pig run.

Max advances to third on the bunt in the fifth.

Max prepares to run like Ryan Theriot... badly.
It's too early in the season for real stats, but Max has two walks in five PAs. He's working on his fundamentals, including hearing/seeing the steal sign and bunt sign.

Coach Greg talks to the team after the game. It was so dark, I had to use the flash. The ump called the game when two pitches he says he never saw went over his left shoulder about three inches from his head.
Like last year, I'm an assistant coach. So far, I've played right field, second base, been the designated runner in pick-off play practice. I've made probably three errors, two mis-throws, and sprained my ankle once. And I'm having a great time. I love baseball.
Bradley comes through.
We spend so much time laughing at a player who isn't on the Cubs, I figure we should spend some time on him when he plays well. 3-run HR to win the game, a double, and, apparently, some good defensive plays.
haaaaaahahahahahahahahhahahaa!
OT: Irish bar with live music in Chicago?
Anyone know where I can find an Irish bar (with food) that has live irish music? Want to make my wife happy for anniversary, which might result in getting to go to the game on Monday. Looking for a place with life irish music tomorrow night.
Twas the morning Before baseball
It was the morning before baseball,
and all through the park
not a creature was stirring, not even a lark
the vendors placed beers in their coolers with care
In hopes that all Cubs fans soon would be there!
Ron Santo and Pat were all snug in the booth
Ron fretted and squalled while Pat spoke all sooth
And Al with his Big Gulp and Jessica too
Had just sat in the bleachers (they could hear Ronnie Woo-Woo)
When down in the grandstand there arose a great cheer
And everyone stood, the 2010 Cubs team was here!
And down on the street Ballhawk ran with a flash
To catch the home runs that Lee, Rami and Byrd smashed!
The logo was painted on the foul territory grass
Shone red, blue and white, as opposing batters all passed
As what to our wondering ears they did say
But Man! Zambrano is pitching strong K after K.
And a little old manager, so quiet and cool
I knew in a moment this must be St. Lou!
But swift to get angry at umpires’ wrong
He’ll whistle and shout and sing them a foul song!
"Now Riot! Now Marshall, Now Colvin and Rami!"
"On Soto, On Dempster, On Dome and Nady!"
"From the pitcher to the bat, over the bleachers now!"
"It could go all the way! Home run! Holy Cow!"
As the ivy that grows on the back outfield wall
When the bats swing together, they hear the fan’s call
So up the NLC standings, the players, they flew
With a clubhouse full of veterans, and new bullpen kids too!
And then as the singer sang the 7th inning stretch
The fan cam catching girls for every boy and letch
Larry came out to give Lilly the ball
And somewhere, Molina heard a terrifying call
They spoke not a word but went straight to work
Pulling singles and doubles, oh the nay-sayers snerked!
Beating Cardinals and Phillies and Marlins so hated
Laughing at Pirates and Mets fans so bated
They took to the basepaths and ran out the throws
Even Soriano gave up his signature pose.
And I heard Lou exclaim as they won the whole thing
Hey Cubs fans! How about a nice World Series Ring!
The Next Generation: First real practice for the Westdale League, Bronco Division Iron Pigs!
Lilly's Psalm
Lilly is my Shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to sit down in green bleachers:
He leadeth me beside Old-Style Vendors.
He restoreth my glove:
He leadeth me in the paths of no designated hitter for His bat’s sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of St. Louis
I will fear no Molina, for Lilly is with me
His elbow and his knee, they comfort me
Thou preparest a red-hot for me in the presence of mine enemies;
Thou annointest my scorecard with Ks; My big-gulp runneth over.
Surely Maddux and Santo shall follow me all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the Park of Lilly forever.
AWESOME CUBS JACKET!
Lookit what I just won on the Ebay! :D
Yesterday's game!
And this is how we feel today.
And that's how we all felt yesterday!
Ernie Banks on Sammy Sosa: It doesn't bother me at all
Looks like the previously published article didn't include everything that Ernie said:
Ernie Banks doesn't know if Sammy Sosa used steroids to eclipse the legendary Cub's franchise home-run record -- and Banks doesn't care.
''It wouldn't bother me,'' said Banks, whose 521 home runs rank second in Cubs history to Sosa's 545 (of 609 total). ''Whatever he did, just be honest about it. I like him a lot; he's wonderful. And I'm not accusing him of anything.''
[...]
''I don't know what he did or didn't do. But I know he hit the home runs. It doesn't bother me at all [whether steroids were involved]. But he hit the home runs for the Cubs. He created a lot of attention and great PR for the Cubs.
''I'm not saying he did no steroids. I don't know about any of that. I know there's been a lot of accusations with him and steroids. But I have no proof of that. I'm not the commissioner. All I know is I like him, and he's a wonderful player, and he hit 60 home runs three years for the Cubs. I don't care about any of this other stuff. It's totally different now than when I played.''
That COMPLETELY changes the tenor of his remarks as previously discussed.
No(t) So Fast ... Naples Still in Running for Cubs Spring Training Home
The article is very short, but basically it says that the media has jumped the gun in assuming that the Mesa bid is definitely being taken; and that Crist has talked to Rickets and been told that no decision has been made. Could be something real, could be more posturing. FWIW, the report this blog pulls from was posted around 6:30 pm today, so it's not like it's from the day before yesterday or anything. Also, there's no way to tell if Crist & Co are wearing Wood jerseys or not.
Bill Lee Doesn't Care about Steroid Use
"Everybody juiced in some way," Lee said. "You had a rough night so you take a few greenies. That was tough playing in those days. These (players have access to) designer drugs like the East Germans were using a long time before.
"The object of life is to try and live longer, be healthier. Ponce de Leon was looking for the Fountain of Youth. If you told me there was a magic bullet, I'd be knocking over old folks homes so I can pitch for one more year. Every kid's a little bit bigger. It is out there in our society.
"To single out ballplayers and BALCO for putting a little Clear on the back of your tongue to make you heal faster from injuries ... hell, how many times did I get injected? At the end of the '74 season I couldn't get out of bed because my kidneys shut down. That's what the team put me on."
Ricketts Refinances Debt Load
While there has been a lot of finger pointing at Tom Ricketts for the Cubs lackluster offseason, behind the scenes Ricketts has been very busy refinancing the $250 million his family borrowed from three banks to buy the Chicago Cubs. Eddie Baeb explains in Crain’s Chicago Business that he is trying to give the team flexibility despite the heavy debt load:
and
Next there was this little bombshell:
The team, now interviewing candidates for the new position of chief financial officer, still intends to raise additional money, upward of $100 million, by selling "investor notes" to wealthy individuals, the spokesman says. That money would go to pay for capital projects, he says.
So the Cubs are trying to sell $100 million in financial notes to pay for the upgrades to the ballpark. This is worth keeping an eye on as we move forward.
Teenage Female Pitcher Makes Pro Debut in Japan
A 17-year-old female pitcher in Japan made history by making her professional baseball debut on Friday . Some baseball pundits have questioned whether her joining a team in the first place was a publicity stunt, while others wonder if the pitcher's mound is a safe place for a teenage girl.
wheeeee!
Milton Bradley's Statement
"I chose Chicago as a free agent because I wanted to be part of finally bringing a championship to Cubs' fans. I expected to have a great season and I am deeply disappointed by my performance and the team's struggles. I played every game with everything I had and wanted desperately to win. My frustration and disappointment boiled over and I said and did certain things that I regret. In hindsight I wish that I handled certain things differently and I apologize for those things that did not work out for the better.
"The air has been cleared and we all want to move on and look forward to better days."
Frankly, I still want him back. We'll see what happens.
Baker better than DeRosa
DeRosa
.244/.313/.425 for an OPS of 738. His OPS-plus is 93 and his BABIP is .273. With the Cards, DeRo has 8 homers and 19 RBI.
Baker
.328/.383/.500 for an OPS of .883. His OPS-plus is 126, and his BABIP is .420, which suggests a lot of hits are falling in and a lot of grounders are finding holes. He’s got 3 homers and 13 RBI for the Cubs.
If you’re into Weighted On-Base Average, or wOBA, which uses linear weights as each type of hit has a different value, DeRosa’s wOBA for the season combined is .336. Last year with the Cubs, the wOBA was .376.
Baker has a combined wOBA between the Rox and Cubs of .353.
Should the Cubs Keep Rich Harden?
Eli Greenspan says "no", because a deal would cost $50-60 mill over 4 years.
