Monta Ellis is making a comeback.

First, look at this: Monta is now 28 years old. He's achieving productivity/efficiency ratings similar to what he put out at age 22, if not better. Why? By all accounts, Ellis already declined...

The Value of Inefficient Players

4

interesting [blockquote]Monta Ellis Golden State's offense is 23rd in points per possession, even after a hot streak over the team's last few games. Stephen Curry, one of the best shooters alive, needed a breakout game against Dallas on Monday to crack 40 percent from the floor. Looking at Klay Thompson's numbers will turn you to stone. David Lee is shooting 44 percent. Is it possible Golden State misses Ellis, allegedly one of the league's most irresponsible chuckers? Maybe. Ellis has probably always been a bit underrated as an offensive player. His shooting percentages have rarely veered into Antoine Walker/Allen Iverson territory, he generates a decent number of foul shots, he doesn't turn over the ball much, and he's a very good passer. Ellis has always generated a higher-than-expected number of assists that lead to shots right at the rim, and data-tracking cameras installed in 13 NBA arenas (including Golden State and Milwaukee) have consistently found that Ellis's teammates shoot a shockingly high percentage off passes from Ellis. That said, Curry (in a limited sample size) generally shot a bit better and played about as efficiently with Ellis on the bench, per NBA.com. Milwaukee is hoping Brandon Jennings's shooting will tick up now that he can split the creative burden with Ellis. That didn't happen last season in a very limited sample, but it is happening so far this season in an even more limited sample; Jennings is 8-of-25 from the floor without Monta and an almost-decent 49-of-112 (44 percent) with Monta. But this is where we get to defense. Ellis's defensive fundamentals are awful, and his teams have hemorrhaged points whenever he has been on the floor. That has continued in Milwaukee. It may be that Ellis is a more valuable offensive player than we thought, but is such a poor defender as to nullify that value.[/blockquote] i posited something similar a few years back in a blog post, which i link below. It got a lot of posts back in the day so even though the language is a bit technical (perhaps overbearingly so ^^), give it a look-see. http://www.goldenstateofmind.com/2010/7/12/1565145/efficiency-vs-production

Otis Smith: Extraordinary Testicular Fortitude

12

Or in layman's terms, his huevos are the size of basketballs. Why I made this fanshot: it's one thing to be in talks for a trade. It's another thing to be contemplating a shakeup, or mulling things over. It's even another thing to go in firesale mode and aim for financial stability in expense for talent. But what Otis SMith has done is close two complex, multi-team blockbuster deals. He's taken a huge risk, yes, and may have jumped the gun for just a bit. But just for a second, let's admire the boldness of this man in taking decisive, ballsy action.

Cheryl Miller: "If you're wondering where Andre Biedrins is, he's in the locker now with an upset stomach and you can expect him not to return for the rest of the game. -- 30 seconds later TNT Announcer: You have an upset stomach Cheryl, why are you out there, why aren't you sitting out? Cheryl: Cuz I need to get paid! TNT Announcer: Nah, it's cuz you're a GAMER, a big time gamer [and not made from charmin soft tissue paper. Oh btw, you could probably step onto the court right now and shoot 3x Biedrin's FT percentage]] ------ From today's TNT broadcast, parenthetical remarks added by me. My attempt to make a relatively pointless fanshot.

Thomas cancels contract

Thank God, I'm not a knicks fan but Isiah Thomas's recent influence on Dolan reminds me a lot of Wormtongue from Lord of the Rings (the guy that screwed over the Rohan King)

Simmons on Lebron

2

Thought the article was top notch and worth a read. Makes a lot of good points of which I will quickly summarize: 1.) Postulates that Wade, Bosh and possibly Lebron had already made their decision in weeks prior and have dragged out the free agency process for publicity reasons. Defends his argument with the following points: A. Bosh and Wade both hired camera crews to film their free agent travails B. The supposed secret pact the three (or four if you include Paul) made during the Olympics. C. Wade's age/injury concerns equates to this being his final major contract, and so it was always Miami all along. D. Wade re-visiting Chicago was a class reality TV ploy to garner more interest in his cause. E. Bosh is an attention whore. 2. Questions the validity of Bosh's superstar status through various points and references, many of which are at least thought-provoking, if not true. 3. Analyzes the Lebron team and the repercussions today's decision will have on the NBA, including specific possibilities for the major teams in contention for his services. 4. Lots of other ancillary points, sports commentary and the usual niche references. Go read it, it's a good brain workout.
